2008 NFL Draft: Bills Pick Recap
The 2008 NFL Draft is now officially in the books, and the Buffalo Bills were a busy team on draft weekend. Holding ten selections on the weekend, the Bills chose to stay pat and draft players at each of those ten spots. Here is a recap of those picks, with links to Buffalo Rumblings' coverage of each player:
Round - Overall: Name, Pos., College
1-11: Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
2-41: James Hardy, WR, Indiana
3-72: Chris Ellis, DE, Virginia Tech
4-114: Reggie Corner, CB, Akron
4-132: Derek Fine, TE, Kansas
5-147: Alvin Bowen, LB, Iowa State
6-179: Xavier Omon, RB, Northwest Missouri State
7-219: Demetrius Bell, OT, Northwestern State
7-224: Steve Johnson, WR, Kentucky
7-251: Kennard Cox, DB, Pittsburgh
As I mentioned earlier, I will post my initial thoughts on this weekend's Bills proceedings tomorrow morning - I need a night off for a little perspective. Expect that early tomorrow morning. For now, enjoy your evening. We'll see you back here tomorrow. Go Bills!

Quick reponse
Best pick: James Hardy/Steve Johnson
Worst pick: Xavier Omon/Kennard Cox (position wise)
Surprising pick: the 4th rounders
Biggest first year impact: Hardy/Ellis
I think I might want to put together a “what I would have done” mock in the next day or so. I definitely wouldn’t have added 3 CB’s or a poor receiving/blocking TE in the 4th.

re:
Got to think the CB’s and TE stuff is aimed at ST’s. I just get so frustrated with there 3-7 round picks. I wonder more of their philosophy in those rounds. I can’t believe they didn’t trade up to get Rucker in the 4th. Would have loved that pick

Think about those TE's
Guys like Rucker, Tamme and even Finley, to me are yes good pass catchers but terrible blockers. The Bills have that with Johnson and Anderson. why use a 4th round pick an a guy who you basically already have on your roster?
C.Anderson/Royal/Fine To me that is a pretty good group of TE’s.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Agree
but Fine has been described as mediocre in both areas. If we are going to pick a true blocking TE, why not get one who’s got good size and has excelled blocking? Oh well, hopefully Fine adds some muscle and improves his receiving skills. He’ll help ST at the very least, and should help a bit offensively to start….

Let's hope McKelvin is a football savant
I just watched his interview on buffalobills.com and he’s not exactly a well spoken individual. I realize that doesn’t matter a great deal in the grand scheme of things (so long as he is indeed a football savant), particularly in light of the fact that he made more money on Saturday than I’ll make in my lifetime. Yes, I’m still a little miffed about the pick but I’ll (likely) get over it sooner rather than later. Apparently yelling “Trade down! Trade down!” repeatedly at the TV doesn’t make it happen….
Unless Fine comes in and lights the world on fire I think I’ll remember this draft as the one where the Bills didn’t get the TE that they needed. That feeling will probably last longer than the McKelvin selection….kind of like the 2006 draft is the one where the Bills didn’t draft Ngata.
Johnson has nice size but Buffalo had receivers right around the same size who never could get on the field except when a kick was involved. For those people hoping that drafting 2 WRs would result in Reed being cut, well, keep dreaming. While I was openly rooting for Sweed (What was wrong with him anyway?) I’ve got to admit to liking the fact that the tallest guy picked by Buffalo is a WR. Let’s hope that the domestic issue was one of those blown out of proportion things.
NFL.com listed Odom at 5’11” and 226 but buffalobills.com has him at 6’3” and 245. If buffalobills.com is right then he could be the FB that most of us wanted the Bills to take. If NFL.com is right I’d be surprised if he made the roster. (Practice squad doesn’t count—and where Omon would likely go.)
Cox has 2 or more inches on every DB on the roster except James. His size might inspire Buffalo to keep him. However, I see the order as being McGee, McKelvin, Greer, James, Youboty, Corner at the start of the camp. Cox and Fox will likely be on the outside looking in when all is said and done….unless the coaches really are down on Youboty in which case he and Fox will be on the outside looking in.
The only way I see Bell making the cut is if he outduels Chambers for the backup tackle position. Buffalo only carried 7 OLs for much of last year. Sadly, they didn’t bring in a C/G who could boot Preston off the squad. Damn.
Ellis should make the roster by process of lack-of-elimination. If he can’t beat out the horde of no-name DEs to get the 4th (and likely final) DE slot then he wasn’t worth the 3rd round pick—something the coaches are unlikely to acknowledge at the end of this summer.
Bowen is the lighted LB on the roster. He may make the cut just because he’s built to be a special teams guy.

Great recap Ron
I would only add that Odom could see more time if Wright is on his way out.

Wright isn’t on his way out unless Omon has a great training camp/pre-season. Like, truly spectacular. The Bills like cornerbacks and running backs in “big” numbers as compared to traditional standards. I expect all four to make the roster, especially considering Wright’s special teams potential.

RB?
All these picks are cool, except RB. We need line help onboth sides and Ali Highsmith at LB was still on the board. With our RB possibilities, why another one?

the Bills do get a fullback:
Army’s Viti signs two-year contract with Bills
Blue-collar city for a blue-collar guy.
Fullback Mike Viti, who made a name for himself as a bruising blocker at Army, has signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills.
He will report to the Bills’ rookie minicamp in Buffalo this weekend.
“I’m just extremely fortunate to get this opportunity,” Viti said. “I think it’s a good fit.
They told me I’m the only rookie fullback they are bringing in. I just look forward to going in and competing.”
Viti, who is 5-foot-9, 240 pounds, has been in contact with Buffalo for several weeks. Officials from the team began talking to him about a free-agent deal during the seventh and final round of yesterday’s NFL draft.
Two other Army players — punter Owen Tolson and wide receiver Jeremy Trimble — hope to sign NFL free-agent deals. Tolson said last night that his agent has spoken with Dallas and Pittsburgh. Trimble’s rep has heard from Denver, Washington and Kansas City.
“I’m confident something will happen,” Trimble said.”
Added Tolson: “My agent is doing a lot of legwork. We want to see if we can come up with any other options.”

and a new QB: LUKE DRONE
NORMAL—As the NFL Draft ended late Sunday afternoon, the fun was just beginning for former Illinois State quarterback Luke Drone and offensive lineman Isaiah Wiggins. | Complete draft coverage
After quick conversations with his agent, Steve Raquel, and Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt, Drone had agreed to a free agent contract with Buffalo. Wiggins is a free agent acquisition of the Baltimore Ravens.
"The whole draft was kind of long. Right after it, I was hoping to get a call and it happened. I’m excited," Drone said. "My agent said Buffalo wanted to sign me. A couple of other teams were interested, but Buffalo was a definite yes. I talked with their quarterbacks coach about five minutes and it sounds like a good situation."
The Bills, who did not draft a quarterback, have Trent Edwards as their starting quarterback with J.P. Losman at No. 2 and Gibran Hamdan listed at third string.
"Their coach said they are looking for me to come in and compete with the third guy and try to make the team," said Drone. "I fly out to Buffalo on Thursday and we have a mini camp this weekend."
Drone finished his ISU career second in school history in completions (610), passing yards (8,123), passing touchdowns (61) and total offense (8,391).
Wiggins, who anticipated his NFL career being as a center, was signed by Baltimore to play tackle, where he was a two-time all-Gateway Conference first-team selection with the Redbirds.
"I just want to do the best that I can, and make a spot on the roster," said Wiggins. "I’m relieved this part is over, and I’m just anxious to get to camp this weekend and start working."
The Redbirds did not have a player selected in the Draft for the first time since 2004.

The Bills love their undrafted guys
Every year, they end up bringing in 10-15 undrafted free agents. Usually a couple stick. We’ll see what they can find this year.
As for this draft. It was one of the more confusing drafts the Bills have had in years. I agree that most of these players are aimed at special teams considering how many of those type of guys we lost this year. Like Brian said, it’s probably best to step back for a while and let it all play out and to see how some of these guys fit in the grand scheme.

but here is the list of undrafted free agent signings. It comes from a website called: FFLiveWire.com.
