I KNIGHT THEE
Sireric.
Sireric believed Josh Johnson would be drafted before Andre Woodson... and he was right. Therefore he is the greatest blogger of all-time. He should change his name to kingeric.
How did you like your crow served? With a Shiraz, I believe? I guess it's good Karma because the Bills had an awesome draft, Day 2 wasn't as strong as the past 2 years but I'm a HUGE fan of Ace Bowen and Chris Ellis. Other than that, I think the rest of the guys will struggle to make the roster.
Anyways, congrats to sireric on winning a gentlemen's bet.

You are a man of you word
Truth be told I had plenty of stuff lined up to say about you, because I was doubting myself. But good old John Gruden and his QB fetish bailed me out.
Also I urge everyone to recommend this post so it can stay up top for all to see.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

haha
I forgot about this funny little deal. I think the most amusing thing is how far they both slid.
7 QBs were taken before Josh Johnson. 10 QBs were taken before Woodson.

It
might have been wise of the Bills to take a QB since they all fell into the 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds. The ONLY QB I really liked this year, though, was Brian Brohm. I don’t know what the flip Matt Ryan has that Brohm doesn’t other than interceptions. Whatever, I guess that’s what happens when scouts stick to “protocol.” I’ve seen both of those guys play (more so Brohm), and Brohn NEVER seemed to make bad throws/decisions.
I don’t know what scared people away from Woodson, either. Sure, he has a slow wind-up, but mechanics can be coached. You don’t throw 40 TDs in the SEC if you aren’t a darn good QB.

I would have liked Woodson in round 6
especially over the RB we took.
Woodson has a ton of talent, but just needs some work. I really think he could wind up being a steal for the Giants.
Watching him, I don’t think his windup or mechanics are that terrible. Yeah they need some work, but he’s got a big arm and talent. I would have definitely taken that flier on him. You are correct, 40 TD’s in the SEC is quite impressive. He could have been a very good player to groom as our future backup….

What I would Give...
for a copy of the Bills draft board. I have a general idea of how they value players, but how they had Derrick Fine graded as a 4th rounder I just don’t know. He really may have been one of the URFA looking for a team right now had the Bills not taken him.
Now that I think about it, how many QBs have the Bills drafted since… 2000. JP Losman, Trent Edwards (can’t think of anymore high picks)? I don’t think Modrak and company place a lot of value or emphasis on the position. They seem to take the OL approach to it, devaluing the position in favor of veterans. The only reason we took Edwards last year is because after Round 2 the Bills go to the BPA approach and Edwards was graded as a 2nd and he was there at the bottom of the 3rd. I don’t see why the front office didn’t elect to take a QB, seeing as we only have 2 on the roster, one of which will be gone in a year (if not sooner).
I guess it’s all splitting hairs, because I’m still very satisfied with this draft.

High 'pick' QBs
I know this wasnt really your point, but I have always found this remarkable.
Picks that the Bills have used on QBs recently:
3 Firsts, 1 Second, 1 Third, 1 Fourth, 1 Fifth.
If memory serves, Bledsoe was a First, Losman a First, Second and Fourth, RJ a First and Fifth, and of course TE a Third.
Imagine if we had discovered Brady on our bench for a 6th rounder, what we could have spent all those other picks on.
Sorry, just venting.

That's
an awesome point. I never thought of it that way. All the high picks, imagine some of the names that could be on this roster right now. DJ would not have had to take over such a train wreck maybe.
Well, we can be sure that if Dick Jauron has a lengthy tenure here we will have a phenomenal football team here for a long time because the guy knows how to draft. He does especially well on Day 2 which is the difference between average football teams and great ones.

For laughs sometime, look at the picks NE has spent on QBs since they chose Brew Bledsoe.
Easy to be a ‘genius’ when you have the most important, most difficult part of the team locked down.
And of course when you know what the defense is :o

For comparison...
Here’s what Green Bay has spent on QBs since acquiring Favre (excluding this year’s pair of Brohm and Flynn): One 1st, one 4th, four 5ths, one 6th, two 7ths, and one 9th round.
Nice to be able to draft QBs low when you know they never have to start a game.
Here’s the list: Ty Detmer, Mark Brunell, Jay Barker, Kyle Wachholtz, Ronnie McAda, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Brooks, Craig Nall, Aaron Rogers, and Ingle Martin.

Wow, there are actually some OK QBs in that list. And that was over what, 20 years?
The picks I have for Buffalo were over 10.

But it is a telling point really
Once a team has a player that solidifies a position such as QB, that team can then build out its team elsewhere quickly by spending picks on other parts of the roster, or selling their pick to a team desperate to get a specific player because the need isn’t so great.
Teams that have done well with this over the year are pretty much the gold standards of how to run a franchise, in SOME respects. No one is perfect at everything, not even the Pats.
These are the top 5 teams in not squandering picks on QBs in my book:
1- Indianaplis: Since getting Peyton in 1998 in round 1, they have drafted only one QB- Jim Sorgi in 2004 in the 6th round. In 10 seasons they have spent 2 picks on QBs, and thats thanks to Peyton’s durability but also good drafting of the o-line and skill postitions which can be expanded due to more picks being available.
2- Titans: After getting Steve McNair in 1995 in round 1, they have ONLY drafted Vince Young in 2006, 1st round. No one else has been drafted at QB for that team since. This means that they do a good job bringing in UDFA and FA QBs to fill in behind their drafted starters.
3- Eagles: After getting McNabb in 1999 in Round 1, they have since drafted AJ Feely Round 5 2001, Andrew Hall Round 6 2004, Kevin Kold Round 2 2007. So far the Eagles have yielded one decent backup (AJ), one guy they think will take over in 3 seasons (Kolb) and Hall has bounced around the pros as a backup. Not bad, especially since only Kolb really cost them anything pick wise (I consider anything past Round 5 to be gravy picks and if you get a backup or starter out of it, its like finding $50 bucks on the ground outside your door).
4- Jacguar’s: Since joining the league in 1995 the Jaguars have been pretty consistent on picking their QBs. Rob Johnson was the first guy they drafted in Round 4 of 1995. Jonathan Quinn Round 3 1998, David Garrad Round 4 2002, Byron Leftwich Round 1 2003. Overall, they’ve done well over the past 3 years of drafting. They used Rob to rob Wilson blind, Quinn was a decent backup, Garrad ain’t shabby, and Leftwich could have been good if he hadn’t taken some of the abuse he did early on in this career.
5- Panther’s: Since 1995 when they joined league along with the Jaguar’s they have been consistent as well in drafting QBs. Kerry Collins Round 1 1995, Jerry Colquitt Round 6 1995, Chris Weinke Round 4 2001, Randy Fasani Round 5 2002, Stefan LeFors Round 4 2005. Kerry was very decent #1 QB, Colquitt and LeFors have become ok backups around the league. Weinke is still hanging around, but I think its because they would be sued for Agism if they cut him. And I have no clue what happened to Fasani. Delhomme didn’t cost them a cent since he was a FA that they brought over from the Saint’s several years ago. Not bad work.
Now, what does this all mean? Well, if your a team like the Bills who have spent in the past 10 years a pile of picks to get QBs, whether trading for them or drafting them, then you can see where this has hurt us. In some cases it was Management burning picks and cash stupidly (The whole Johnson/Flutie mistake) to the team yanking its guys around (Losman/Trent current issue).
This is not a debate about who is better QB for this team now, they say Trent, and Trent it will be. Gotta admit when they drafted Losman my first thought was “Who the hell is JP Losman?” and things haven’t made much sense since. Anyhow, the thing here is this, we have squandered a number of high picks on questionable decisions, while the above 5 teams, some of whom have spent a number of picks on QBs were taking late round flyers on guys because they could afford to let the kid develop since they have/had established starters who could go a full season. Oh well, this rambled off topic somewhat, but I was bored today :-P.

Ramble on
Some interesting stats there on other teams and the picks they have spent on QB. Even funnier might be the ‘net’ amount of picks spent. Both New England and Jax actually had picks coming in due to their trading out the QBs they did have.
