Hardy v. Corner
If anyone is interested Akron played Indiana this year. Indiana won 41-24. The Bills #2 draft pick Hardy was matched up with our #4 draft pick Corner. In that game Hardy had 4 catches for 65 yards and 1 TD.
Just an interesting stat but it doesn't really say much. My opinion is Hardy will never be a 85+ catch WR. Look for him to catch 3-4 passes a game max until he adjust to the NFL. However, we can truly hope for him at add 6TD's over a 16 game season.
Successful rookie numbers would be 40 catches for 500-550 yards and 6-7TD's.

I would be ecstatic if he could match Lee Evan's numbers his Rookie season
Lee did:
2004-
Games- 16
Receptions- 48
Yards- 843
Avg- 17.6
Long- 69
TDs- 9
Now, Hardy won’t hit those Avg per cacth numbers as he is a slower WR, but I could see him going as high as 60 catches (lots of short yardage jump balls from Trent).
I think he will be around 700-900 yards due to more catches.
TDs- well, he averaged one TD a game in college, lets say he normally would see a 50% decline due to the switchover, but I think Trent will target him anytime we are within the 10 yard line and we pass it, I think he scores about 10-12 TDs if he has a great year and we use him right.
Honestly, I would be stoked if he just redid Lee’s first year, and we got the same production from Lee that we did 2006. That would between our two guys:
130 catches
2135 yards
17 TDs
That would be a very very livable outcome.

Hardy not much slower and reallya "steal"
With Hardy being so Big, a 4.5 or high 4.4 40 is great compared to Lee’s 4.38.
Not to mention that timed speed is suspect as guys play differently. Personally, I am so happy we did not get Wilford or Johnson as FAs because Hardy will be way better.
There’s something about him as I’ve seen which makes him more dynamic.
AS far as the rookie season. Kurupt has it spot on as Parrish needs to break out and Lee needs to solidify himself so as to deserve the big resigning contract.

I'd take that
3-4 catches…..50-60 for the season. That’s what we’ve been getting from our #1.
If Hardy can come in, be a starter, draw attention from Evans/Parrish, and be the bigtime redzone threat we expect, it’ll be a successful rookie season for him.

Hardy Expectations
I would take those numbers … particularly the 6-7 touchdowns. Of course I’d like more, but the main thing is to have a presence that defenses have to think about. That will help Evans. I also like Reed and Parish more in the slot. I’ve been pimping Hardy all along. I was glad to see that, given a choice, OBD saw it the same way. I was surprised to not see a media question that asked Modrak why Hardy over Kelly and Sweed. It would’ve been fun to see their answer. It would also have been fun to know how they compared Hardy to Devon Thomas. We’ll never know what they thought, but we will certainly see what happens.

Hardy Didn't Beat Corner
Corner only gave up one catch for one yard in the game against Hardy, not bad for a 5’9 corner. I love the Hardy pick but I think in Corner we could have a Winfield clone

Ind v. Akron
If Hardy only had 1 catch for 9 yards it begs the Q why wasn’t Corner on him all game as Akron’s best D player since Ind doesn’t have many other options. Only explanation is the put Corner on INdiana’s #2 WR and constantly doubled Hardy which then is solid that he had 4 for 65 and 1 against constant double coverage. However, it is not good for Corner’s sake that they didn’t let him play Hardy all game (assuming the stat that corner gave up 1 for 9 yds is true).

Hardy
Who knows what Hardy will do. The hope is he can play 16 games opposite of Lee and win some jump balls.
I will say I will be very interested to see the full cast of weapons, if they somehow stay healthy and then what this offense does. You gotta realize our O-L had no injuries really last year and (knock on wood) that will happen again. But if all of our playmakers stay healthy and Trent now in his 2nd year I would expect to see significant improvements. IF NOT….there needs to be a serious personnel discussion bout our skill players. Last year was SUPPOSED to be a huge year for the offense. Instead it was awful. I have strong reservations that additions of Hardy/Fine/Johnson and C. Andersen/T. Johnson will do much to bolster this offense. I thought it was a poor job by the front office addressing the offensive skill positions for the 3rd consecutive year.

What
would you have done differently? There wasn’t really much to add in FA.
I wonder if the Giants will take next year’s 2nd rounder for Jeremy Shockey.

What would you have done Marv?
Just wondering. There were very few options in FA. In the draft we got, at worst, our 2nd ranked WR. Sure, we probably would have been better off getting a receiving TE somewhere in the draft, but we would have had to sacrifice Ellis or multiple draft picks. I’m not sure there would have been anyone worth grabbing in the 3rd or a player the even FO liked, anyhow.
I wish we could have gotten more playmakers, but it’s always tough to bring in multiple ones at a time. It sure is easy to talk about it though!

Me?
I would not have allowed to not get a WR in FA to start. I would have gone after Ernest Wilford and targeted him. He would provide a big target for the red zone. I think it would be a relatively low-risk, high reward proposition. 4 years $14 million I think his deal was?
Then in the draft I would have at the very least gotten Martin Rucker in the 4th round by trading up 3 spots. Reggie Corner might have been there in the 5th? I would have been prepared to mortgage a pick next year to trade back up in the 2nd for at least Martellus Bennett.
I just don’t like our TE situation at all. I’m really frustrated with that position. We have so many guys that are similar. I don’t understand why our TE’s HAVE to be good run blockers. Why can’t we have on guy that is a pass-catching TE?
But in reality as frustrated as I am about that, I love stacking another draft together with this regime’s philosophy on the previous 2 drafts. I think the foundation is now there that this organization is in solid shape to be good for 4-6 years now and really make a run. Foundation is there. Next year we will be closer to having to draft any position because we finally are at the point where we have some good talent at every position on the football field. What do you think of that statement?

and that’s why you dont work for an NFL team. please. Wilford is just not that good. TE is a lot better off than people think. we had 50 catched between our tihtends w/ a rookie QB. finally you dont get playmakers after the 2nd. i dont know how long anyone here has played, coached, or just watched but you dont expect a 3rd and beyond TE, DE, CB, or what ever come in and be a star. when it does happen the team is lucky, they werent expecting anything from them right away. most of those players have ability but need the right coaches. great draft top 12 defense top 15 offense and #1 special teams

What?
you don’t ever expect anyone beyond a 3rd rounder to ever be a star or contribute? OK?
TOP 15 OFFENSE. You are on something my friend. That is ludicrous. What a homer. Top 12 defense, #1 ST’s?
What about Royal/Johnson/Schouman/Anderson/Fine excites you? A bunch of guys that can block for Lynch to get 3.5 yds per carry? Our offense lacks dynamic weapons and to expect to go from 30th in the league in offense to top 15 by adding Hardy/Fine/Teyo Johnson and C. Andersen! However at the end of the day it matters if Edwards/Schonert do better. But still I think the most important aid to a young QB is a reliable, pass catching TE. And we have nothing of the sort. I think Fred Davis or Keller would have helped out trent more than Hardy cuz we could have gotten B. Johnson or Wilford in FA to win the jump balls.
You are ludicrous to thing everything is coming up roses. You must be drinking Bills Koolaid

OL injuries
Walker, Butler and Peters all missed snaps. Walker missed a couple of plays here and there in games but always returned. Butler missed a good portion of the Cowboys game. Either his absence or Preston’s presence was partly responsible for the Bills’ inability to close out that game. Peters went down in the Giants game and missed the Eagles game. When he was playing the Bills were winning. After he was injured the offense folded.
The Bills added only one OL in the draft and he doesn’t figure to see the field in the 08 season even if there are injuries. In fact, he’s likely not to make the active roster. My guess is he gets placed on the practice squad unless/until one of the starters is lost for significant time. I understand that OL wasn’t a priority this offseason but I would have preferred Buffalo pick up a guy who might be able to back up, if not displace, Fowler.

Ron...
Two questions for you, if you don’t mind…
How do you have such good knowledge of the O-line? Are you a coach/ former player? I know I disagree with you on a lot of things, but I’m definitely not calling you out when it comes to line play. Which leads to my next question…
Have you had the chance to see any film on this Bell kid? Maybe I missed it, but I’d like to hear your opinions on him in detail.

Draft guides on Hardy
I think too many of you guys take too much of what the “draft gurus” say about these players as “gospel”. These are the same “gurus” who said that Ryan Leaf was a better QB than Peyton Manning and said that Jerry Rice was too slow to be a top notch WR in the NFL. More recently had Brady pegged as the 10 best QB in his draft class, and thought that Brandon Marshall and Marquis Colston would be undrafted free agents. You should do your own research and then give your opinions. There are various highlights on the web for James Hardy and for a person who supposedly doesn’t run good routes, he was wide open alot. He had 79 rec, 1100 yds and 17tds for crying out loud on a team that didn’t have another offensive player drafted. Clearly when teams played against Indiana they all knew that they had to stop James Hardy and he still produced those numbers. I could only imagine what his stats would have been if he had help. I don’t think he was given enough credit by the “draft gurus” and with weapons like Lee Evans and Marshawn Lynch on the field with him it’s going to be fun to see how much of an impact he makes with the Bills. Barring an injury I predict that he will be AFC Rookie of the year.
by the Skycap on Apr 28, 2008 6:57 PM EDT 0 recs
Unlikely
Wide recievers almost never get rookie of the year, since most rookie RBs who start 14+ games have over 1,000 yards, and the best of them gets selected as the rookie of the year.
So this year, it’s probably McFadden, unless Baltimore goes to the playoffs behind Flacco.
In the last 22 years, there were 17 running backs that got rookie of the year, along with just two QBs (Young and Roethlisberger) and three WRs (Boldin, Moss, and Carl Pickens in ‘92).
Why on earth did Pickens get rookie of the year, anyway? 26-326-1 TD is not great numbers, even if you include his 18 punt returns for 229 yards and one TD. Ricky Watters had 1400 combined yards and 11 TDs the same year as a rookie.

Re:
I do have a formulated opinion on Hardy. I saw 3 of his games last year and he is definitely a legit player. He has great natural skill and made some real circus catches. I just don’t think his impact will be immediate as with any rookie WR besides Randy Moss or Marques Colston. I also don’ think our scheme will do him much good as Hardy is a player that does not run great routes and relies more on his just natural ability. Our offense is so damn conservative. I think much of my distaste with this offense is the play calling and scheme. In the NFL a wide open offense spreading the field has proven to be more potent than a run first team that tries to pound it with a RB.
I really like Hardy. In fact, when I then reviewed his highligh tape I loved how fluid he looked running. But my point is that the FO did not do enough to bolster this offense IMO. We need 2 significant additions to the passing game. Instead we only got one and he is a rookie which doesn’t bode well to SIGNIFICANTLY bolstering the inept passing offense of 2007

When the Bills line Hardy up out wide then put Lee in motion with Roscoe or Reed in the slot, we will dictate coverage schemes to the defense, something we could not do last year.
In 2006, our 4 wide offense (with Fairchild, JP and last years same cast of receivers) had #s like
CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT
106 151 1243 70.2 8.23 83 7 5 13.0 96.5
Last year with Peerless lost and Reed hurting after he was out we could not spread the field and play 4 wide. Go to ESPN and look at the splits.
With Lee, Hardy, Roscoe and Reed / or a split TE and a real threat out of the RB slot, what will we be capable of? And we can run out of the spread offensive formations against smaller nickle and dime pacakage guys!
You can only go 4 wide. Following your logic, if we have 2 r0okies with less than ideal output, would we not be worse off?
by freddyjj on Apr 28, 2008 8:26 PM EDT 0 recs
re:
Josh Reed doesn’t really count first of all. He is terrible and struggles to get open. If he somehow gets open he is a tough guy who excels on contact. However, Hardy is a ROOKIE, Lee is always doubled, Royal is slow, we don’t throw to Lynch and we lack the expolisve 3rd down change-of-pace RB.
Our offense will not be dynamic this year IMO. If we had a real pass-catching threat at TE I would be more inclined but we will struggle over the middle of the field again as was in 2007.
Yes I would rather have 2 rookies. If one of them was TE.

MARVelous why so negative
You missed my point – we ran much less 4 wide sets last year given personnel limitations. Hardy and Lee outside both can’t be doubled if we have 2 other WRs on the field and a back coming out of the back field. 7 DBs or LBs on 5 receivers means 2 draw single coverage. There will be mismatches!
Jackson and Lynch can catch and will be asked to do more of it this year – most likely Lynch as he is better pass blocker. And we can run draws and counters out of the 4 wide set – think K Gun!
btw – Metzalaars, Mckellar and after them Reimersma were not fast guys!

What this match-up tells me
Is that Corner’s height is not much of a negative on him if he can be matched up against a top-notch wide receiver who is taller than Moss and only give up 65 yards. I think the Bills may have found a gem in Corner, but, as always, we’ll see. Coming from a small school, not being invited to the combine, being small, etc. may have allowed him to go under the radar enough that only Bill’s scouts knew what value they were getting. In any case, on the other side of the coin, I’m certainly excited to see Hardy out on the field in Bills Blue.

Catches
If Hardy can get 9 catches for 9 yards and 9 TDs he will have vastly improved the offense.

Hardy's Impact
I agree anything more than 6 TD’s by Hardy next year and I will consider it a success…not to mention Hardy’s size and ability to score will take attention away from evans, parrish and reed and more importantly will keep teams from loading the box in the RZ and give Lynch a little more space, b/c he seemed to be the only one last year with a nose for the endzone

Hardy vs. Corner
It would be impossible to get anything out of this matchup unless we actually watched the game.
We don’t know what kind of defense Akron plays so unless someone read something somewhere, we don’t know if Corner was even matched up against Hardy. What if Akron plays zone? or what if they play their CBs on sides regardless of where the offense puts their WRs?
Akron had another pretty good corner on their team. Senior Davanzo Tate was on most teams draft boards and will likely be given a chance to make a team. He was highly recruited and went to West Virginia, but transfered to be closer to home. His profile on NFL.com says that he only allowed 1 TD in 30 starts at Akron. It is possible that Akron would have tried to match Hardy up with Tate instead of Corner.
There are other factors to consider as well. Indiana ran the ball twice as many times (48) as they threw it (24). What if Akron had a good pass rush going that game that helped the DBs defend Hardy? Maybe it was the opposite and Indiana had all day to stand in the pocket, but Akron stuck with Hardy. Maybe Akron double teamed Hardy on every play or maybe Corner was left on an island sometimes. There could have been a pass interference penalty that took stats away from Hardy that we are unaware of. Hardy could have been open, but was under or overthrown on several occasions. There is just no way to learn anything about either of these guys by the box score of this game.
