I have a problem with this math...
I don’t think it’s nearly enough money for the Bills to be getting. Sure it seems to average out to 9 million plus a game, three of which are meaningless pre-season games, of which this season ticket holder is glad not to be paying for. But, in 3-5 years, will that really seem to be that much money? I know Buffalo doesn’t currently average close to nine million a game in OP, but still, 78 really big ones is not enough…

Did you read the part where that $78 million is DOUBLE their 2006 operating income? It’s an insane amount of money. I don’t even count the three pre-season games, to tell you the truth – I see it as about $16 million per for five games. They can have all the pre-season games they want.
Where are your seasons? We just upgraded to Section 110, Row 10… are you close-ish?

I know it's a lot of loot...
And we’re both in agreement – those games shouldn’t count, but they do. The NFL for years has been ripping off the fans with these bogus pre-season games. So, for as much as they don’t count, they surely generate a lot of revenue.
Here’s where I question the money, and trust me, I’m no accountant. First, I am counting those pre-season games, just because they are the saem price as regular season games. So, I’m going on that 9+ million a game. Next (and this is a total, total assumption by me – if someone out there has better numbers, please feel free to provide them), I’m assumming typically the Bills bring in about 5-6 million a game, in OP.
So far, it does seem like a good deal. But, do the Bills get a share of the parking in Toronto? They make a bunch of loot off of that here. What about concessions? What about team merchandise? I think these are questions that haven’t been answered fully. The report just came out and said a “whopping 78 million.”
Here’s an idea that I bet hasn’t been kicked around. It’s stupid for what it’s worth, but there is some merit to it…
I talk to a lot of Canada’s finest. They aren’t to keen on watching a Bills game in the skydome. Sure, the ride is a lot shorter, but it definitely does not (or will not) provide a genuine Bills game day experience. Instead of “selling” the game to the Skydome, why don’t we all just sell every ticket to one particular game of the year to a Canadian? Think about it for a second. That’s what we really want to do; regionalize. One game each year, only Canadians are allowed – it’d be their game. That’s 72,000 people coming into WNY for a weekend. With the Canadian dollar as strong as it is, it’d be a huge economic boom for WNY.
I’m in the cheap seats – 220. But I have a good row, and an aisle seat. The scoreboard is a savior. If you’re in 110, you are living the highlife my friend. I go with too many people to collectively make a move. I hate them for it…

Joking aside
When DJ was hired, I seem to remember a lot people saying it was a “cheap” hire on the part of Ralph. Whether or not thats the case, the hope is this additional revenue stream will help the Bills to keep up with the larger market teams who are able to afford extravagant coaches salaries, and the large signing bonuses, etc.

How does that number compare?
I haven’t read or heard anyone talking about how that 78 million number stacks up to what other franchises have earned from their overseas games. Does anyone have any clue about what the 49ers and Cardinals made in Mexico or the fins and Giants made in England?
I know those situations were VASTLY different – but I’m kindof curious what “renting” an NFL team should cost in the marketplace. I won’t be able to judge whether it’s a good deal or not until I see some perspective.
I do know that I’m excited about what it means for the Bills. Back when the games were announced I was happy about it…anything to make the team more viable both on the field and off. And yes, I live in downtown Buffalo and yes, I go to Bills games. I’ll miss the fins game, but I can live with it if it means my 19-month-old son may still get to see his first Bills game some day.

Good points man.
I think that’s a great question about the overseas games. I think there’s a lot more information that needs to be gathered before we see this as a plus or minus.
