Will Losman go to the Packers???

I am not sure if anyone remembers the draft when JP came out. Most analysts had JP going to the Packers. The Packers were drawn to JP because of his extreme resemblance of Farve when he was JPs age. They both were very raw with cannons for an arm but needed some work and time.  This makes me think that JP will end up with the Packers by the end of the draft or before (especially with all the rumors of him going to the Packers anyway).

What does everyone think they will give up to get JP and will it be enough for us to pull the trigger?

If we do trade JP... who is a legit backup that we can grab at a reasonable cost (Culpepper will not come cheap, nor do I want him in a Bills uniform)?

JP
I doubt we trade him at this point.  We'd have very few options for a backup unless we want to bring in some deadbeat like Dilfer or Culpepper.

I can't imagine GB offering more than a 4th or 5th if they were indeed interested...

JP is here to stay (for this year)
Just because GB liked Losman 4 years ago doesn't mean they still do.  Losman has played in 37 NFL games and GB probably has an entirely different opinion of him.  JP just turned 27 years old and doesn't have the same appeal as he did when he was a raw, but big armed kid.

GB has plenty of needs to address in their own right.  They have old corners and needs to find a new nickel guy/long term replacement.  GB will be looking for a tight end to replace Franks and a DT to replace Williams.  They could also use an upgrade at guard and maybe SS.  COnsidering that, I doubt they would be willing to give up anything higher than a fourth for Losman.

Losman is worth more to the Bills than he would to the Packers.  Aaron Rodgers is a vet (despite hardly playing) and has proven more to the Packers than Trent Edwards has to the Bills.  Edwards has been injury prone and was pretty bad last season.  The Bills NEED Losman as insurance.  If GB wasn't comfortable with Rodgers as the starter and Nall as the backup they would have signed somebody after Favre retired.  They have plenty of cap space and there were still some guys available.

The only available QBs are:

Tim Rattay
Kelly Holcomb
Trent Dilfer
Daunte Culpepper
Byron Leftwich

When Tim Rattay is your best option, you are in trouble.

Do the Bills really need to add another late round pick?  I realize they have some needs, but they have 9(?) picks already.  How many rookies are we expecting to make the Bills roster?  I would guess about 6 rookies make the 53 man roster and 5 more make the practice squad.

They have ten picks.
An extra late fourth, and two extra sevenths.

Keep him
And just let him go next year if that is the best option. We need a back up who is good with the players, and knows the system. Also, he understands there is a moderately good probability he will play because of injury and therefore showcase his skills if need be. And of course, the long shot is that he beats out Edwards for the starting role, as he may improve his accuracy and defensive recognition, but that is unlikely.
I guess the greater question is, do we retain JP as our back up long term? I would not mind that, and in fact, that would be a very good scenario as in a reserve role JP can light it up. However, his ego may not stand for it, or the QB marketplace.

Why would Green Bay...
...make that trade?  Losman hasn't proven that he's any better than Aaron Rodgers, and Rodgers has had the benefit of learning at Favre's elbow the past several years.

And even if Green Bay would make that trade, anything they would offer is going to be less valuable than the services of a decent backup QB at Losman's current salary.

Unless the Packers lose their minds and offer something outrageous like a first round pick, I can't imagine this trade would happen.

Rodgers.
I think if I was a Packer fan, I'd really want Losman.  Rodgers has proved absolutely nothing.  Matt Schaub didn't really light it up, did he?  There's something to be said for game experience, even if it was poor.

If I was a Packer fan...
...I might want Losman, but I wouldn't want to trade for him.  There's no point -- Rodgers hasn't proven anything, but neither has Losman.  Why give up a draft pick for a guy who's proven nothing and has only a year left on his contract when you can get better value through the draft?

No idea
It's nice to have JP around, I'm sure he will get game time this year if he stays.  Its rare for a QB to take every snap in a season, unless your like Brett Farve.

I wold hope if they traded him that they would find a way to get a 3rd out of it, like giving away JP and a 5th round for a 3rd, you know something to make it worth while and taking the risk of not having that insurance there until a new QB learns the ropes.

Backups are valuable
but I am also a sabres fan and you see what can happen if you hold on to assets that will end up leaving at the end of the year anyway. I would be fine with Trent Dilfer as a backup and I would take a fourth round pick for JP. This would give us three fourth round picks. This would give us plenty of opportunites to move up in a couple of rounds and grab players we covet.

TWO SCENARIOS:

If we keep JP:

  1. We have a great backup QB scenario
  2. Next year we will have to find a new backup
  3. JP probably wont, but could get tired of the nice guy act once the season is in full swing
  4. We do not get a single thing for JP but maybe a wave as he walks out the door
If we trade JP NOW
  1. We don't have an ideal situation for our backup QB. We would be in the same situation if we kept him, just a year later.
  2. We prevent any chance of turmoil in the clubhouse
  3. We get compensation for JP... probably a 4th but maybe a 3rd

If we trade JP now point #1
We may not be in the same scenario next year if there are other viable backups on the market.
We may even find that a good back up falls into our lap this year and we are able to trade JP, but the suitors may not be there. We could still trade JP up until week 6 so who knows.

The Sabres
The best analogy you could make with this current situation and the Sabres is Miller and Biron.  The Sabres had a great backup, traded him so they could be better in the future and are now stuck with an awful backup.  Miller is stuck in goal every game and is looking tired and worse every night.  A backup QB leaving is totally different than All-Stars like Drury and Briere leaving.

You might think twice about being comfortable with Dilfer as a backup if you looked at his career stats.

Dilfer's awful career

Dilfer had a QB rating of 55.1 last season which was the worst in the entire league other than a few players who attempted less than 40 passes.

Calling the backup situation not ideal is an understatement.  If we trade JP we would have one of the worst backups in the entire league.

What turmoil are you going to get from a player in the last year of his contract?  The only players to ever cause problems in the final year of their contracts are players who are constant trouble and guys who want lucrative extensions so they don't have to risk injury before FA.  JP knows that he won't be traded once the season starts, if he is going to be a problem he would be one now.  He would be skipping workouts and causing a fuss like Chad Johnson if he really wanted out that bad.

I don't get the "If we keep JP: Next year we will have to find a new backup" comment.  We will have to find a new backup regardless of whether or not we keep JP.  Unless you plan on the then 39 year old Dilfer being a long-term backup option.  There will be plenty of options in FA next year including:
Kurt Warner
Jeff Garcia
Rex Grossman
Kyle Boller
Matt Cassell
Quinn Gray
Kerry Collins
Patrick Ramsey
Charlie Frye

I realize that isn't the most impressive list ever.  They are all still considerably better options than Dilfer.  Also who is to say that Hamden won't prove himself worthy this year or that a late round QB impresses at camp and becomes a cheap, long term backup.  Do we even know for sure that we won't be looking for a starter next season too?

If the Bills can get a 3rd for JP I think they will.  But they can't get a 3rd.  Who would give the Bills a 3rd round pick for an average QB in the last year of his contract?  And I know it doesn't sound like much, but JP will factor into the comp picks the Bills get in the 2010 draft.  So its a 4th or 5th round pick now OR a season with a reliable backup and a 6th round pick in a couple years.

JP - compensatory.
You really can't say that you'll get a compensatory pick for JP next year.  That depends on the whole of the off season.  Sure, he'd be a "point," or whatever he is they call those guys.  But you can't be absolutely sure you'll get something for him next year.  That's why you trade him this year; so you can get something for nothing..

Great point
After reading your thoughts, I would have to agree.
