Sports - As I See It - Hardy Apology Falls Short of the Mark
WGRZ's Ed Kilgore brings back to life the story that won't die - James Hardy's allegedly pulling a gun on his father during an argument last week.
Is it just me, or is Kilgore being a bit harsh here? To liken a young man to Roger Clemens for a "crime" that remains alleged, uncharged and won't be pursued by any legal force strikes me as rather absurd. You make the call, folks.

The facts Ed, only the facts
Didn’t we learn anything from the reporter at the Boston Herald. Don’t assume something to be true until you know the facts. The defintion of “allegedly” is represented as existing or being as described but not so proved: supposed. Ed and others is jumping down this kids back for what, because he issued an apology? Could he be apologizing for the negative image placed upon him by media members? The other “alleged” incident with his girlfriend was later learned to had been exagerated by the girl because she was mad at him. The kid is trying to do the “right” thing and become a better person. Save the persecution of him until you have something “factual”. James Hardy, I hope you have a Rookie of the Year season and help the Bills to the playoffs and beyond.

Maybe a little harsh, but
Ed makes a point that can’t be gotten around. I quote: “The question I have, and Hardy hasn’t denied the allegation, is “did you pull a gun on your dad during an argument”? If the answer is yes, which again Hardy hasn’t denied, then there simply is no defense, unless your dad pulled a weapon on you first. It just isn’t acceptable.”
If I were accused of anything, the first thing I would do (assuming I didn’t do it) is say “I did not pull, wave, brandish (or whatever verb you would like to insert) a weapon at my dad. It is really that simple. Now, if you are so desperate for the Bills to win games that you don’t care what our players do, then fine keep making excuses. Booo hooo…his daddy was in prision….boooo hooooo…he had a tough life growing up. Well, guess what. There are generations of people who have come to his country as immigrant that have had a tough life. Hardy is not unique. He has an opportunity to make more money in a season than many of us will see in a lifetime. Hire a good psychologist and get over it, start making good decisions both on and off the field, and earn your paycheck!!!

I agree
And I’ll add loss the handgun, there really is no need to be carrying one around in Buffalo. It will only lead to more trouble.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Found Hardy's theme song
“Get Over It” by the Eagles. When I heard it this weekend, I immediately thought of our boy, Hardy!!

What a poor piece of "journalism"
I agree with Skycap.
Sorry Ed that Hardy didn’t phrase his apology the way you wanted him to. You don’t know what happened, so making the comments that Hardy should apologize for messing up is ridiculous on your part. I didn’t realize that Hardy had been arrested and charged with a crime here, so why does he need to talk as if he was?
Yeah, whatever happened that day probably was a mistake and something Hardy regrets. Whether a gun was involved is probably going to remain a mysterdy, so there’s no reason to be jumping down his throat as you are as clueless as the rest of us on the matter. Shut up and move on, seriously. The only reason incidents like this linger for so long in our minds is because pompous idiots like Kilgore won’t let it go.

We don't understand
how some of these young men have grown up. It sounds like Hardy has had a pretty tough up bringing and was without his father. I can imagine if my father wasn’t there and then I made it to the NFL, that it would bring out some animosity. There are obviously some feelings there that overwhelmed Hardy. I think he will grow up and be a productive player and person. Especially being around the Bills organization.

I thought
it was an attempt to draw some controversy but yet he said enough nice things about Hardy to not have the piece a total “ripping of Hardy” These guys have to spark some controversy and this is no different.
All I’ll say is that I like the new kid on the Bills offense. He has something to prove, he had a rough upbringing, and now DJ just needs to channel that anger from hitting his gf and baby and brandishing a gun on his pa, to scoring 6 on the football field.
And i guarantee you part of the argument with his dad had to be due to the financial reward he is goign to get as a high 2nd round pick. I’m sure that had something to do with it. “mo money mo more problems” after all

3 strikes
The problem here is that Hardy is considered a big part of the Bills future and so many Bills fans are willing to cut him some slack. Hey, he beat his girlfriend with his baby there. But he had a rough upbringing. Hey, he pulled a gun on his Dad. But hey, his Dad wasn’t there for him growing up. “A rough upbringing” is not an excuse. He was able to overcome that to become a star player at University, but when things go wrong he has a built-in excuse. You can’t belittle the situations when it was serious enough that police were called in. I think Ed and others are saying he’s not being responsible and if he keeps getting into these situations he’s gonna be out of the league soon.
It’s troubling that it happened right after the draft when he came to town and said he was all changed and everything was in the past. How can you really believe he won’t do it again? If he pulled a gun on his Dad BEFORE the draft, how high do you think he would have gone? Bills fans would have said “NO WAY” to him at that point.

well
there are no excuses…it is what it is….he is in the spotlight, people will judge, and that is it….I mean what do you think is going to happen? The bills will cut him? I mean, he obviously has issues, and he will most likely continue to have off-field troubles. As fans we can either boycott the team, hope he produces on Sundays, or hope he gets in serious trouble.
It is what it is. It’s a waiting game now.

Girlfriend
I have never heard in any Quote or acknowledgement from Hardy that he hit his girlfriend. I did read a quote from his gfriend which said he did not hit her but she was in a fight with someone else, she was mad at him and got him in trouble from aggressively grabbing her arm. If Hardy has ever admitted or been quoted as acknowledging he hit his girlfriend then provide me that article and I will stand corrected.
Again, as I said in another post there is nothing that says he waived or pointed a gun around except some news reports. Maybe he merely showed he had a gun. There is no quote from the woman whose back yard it was that says anything other than he had a gun. She is not quoted, nor is Hardy, nor is his father as saying anything different.
So he had a angry girlfriend say he did something that she later said he didn’t do. And an allegation that he might have waived a gun that is unconfirmed. Eh, I’m not concerned. Hey there was rumors that Jim Kelly threw his pregnant wife down the stairs. It was never proven either, should we assume that happened?

Hardy
spent a weekend in jail and took anger management courses…but obviously he didn’t do anything wrong. If it’s big enough that police were called then something happened. They just don’t randomly make housecalls to see what’s up. At some point you have to wonder if Limas Sweed would have been a better pick to make.

WHAT?!?
come on…its been a few weeks since the draft. The point at which we start to consider if Limas Sweed was a better pick is nowhere close yet. There are no excuses but we don’t know what happened and the kid just got drafted into what will be a high paying job. This is what happens when someone from a lower economic standing gets handed a lot of money fast, people from the past show up to cash in. He’ll make it through this rough patch or he won’t but let’s not condemn him yet.
Another 3 rounds of starters in the draft?

Sweed
I’m just saying that in the new NFL landscape, where they are trying to clean up their image, taking a guy with a tainted past when someone with comparable talent is also available might not be a good idea. Small market teams like the Bills can’t afford to mess up in the draft.
And I’m not sure, but hitting your girlfriend is kind of a big deal. It’s not like he took money from agents or smoked some weed. Try telling a woman what he did and see the reaction.

This isn't a big deal at all
Benaconda, it would be pretty tough to tell a woman what he did considering that we don’t know what happened. his girlfriend (who he is still with) accused him of hitting her AND their child who was only 1 or 2 years old. A couple of days later she changed her story and said he hit her, but not the baby, then a while later she said he never hit her, but that he was physical.
The cops admited to accusing Hardy of much worse than what actually happened and their statement included the fact that she had one mark on her neck that looked like it could have happened recently and no other evidence of physical abuse. We don’t know what happened so be careful with your accusations.
I personally have no problem whatsoever with Hardy pulling the gun on his dad. It doesn’t bother me one bit. His dad was in prison for most of James’ childhood and supposedly wasn’t much of a father once he got out of jail. His dad was asking for money and he wouldn’t take no for an answer. I guess Hardy threatened that he would get physical with his dad, then did get physical by shoving him and telling him to leave. his dad didn’t leave and he pulled out the gun, which is his constitutional right to own and he has a permit to carry it. Why is this a big deal?
And who cares about the apology, I’m sure his agent wrote it, so why does it matter what he said and how he worded it. He didn’t do anything illegal so I don’t think he needed to apologize in the first place.

So refusal to leave
someone’s property, which is not even yours, is grounds for threatening to shoot someone? Really???? Why not just call the cops and have them take care of it?

Women and the law
Benaconda when it comes down man vs. woman with the law, man loses. If you and your girlfriend/wife got into a verbal argument at home and she called the police when they arrive you(as a man) are automatically at fault. I had to bail my best friend out of jail once. His live-in girlfriend came home arguing and throwing pots and pans at him because her friend thought she saw him with another woman. The killer part is that he locked himself in his room while he called the cops. When they arrived she told them that he hit and pushed her. Because it was the holiday weekend he had to spend it in jail. She later recanted her story and the charges were dropped. This is the reason that I don’t buy the Hardy girlfriend story at all because “hell hath no fury than a woman scorned.”

please
please tell me she was no longer his live in girlfriend after that episode.
