Buffalo's track record and Hardy's track record: a perfect match.

I wasn't in favor of drafting James Hardy in April.  The character issues were too suspicious to me to favor drafting him over several other talented wide receivers without the baggage.  The domestic abuse case was "settled" out of court.  He was suspended for a separate incident at Indiana for reasons that haven't really been discussed in the media.  Meanwhile, Buffalo's hole at wide receiver was gaping after striking out in free agency at the position, so rolling the dice on character risks was probably a luxury Buffalo couldn't afford.  Had Buffalo signed a veteran receiver like Bryant Johnson, Ernest Wilford, or DJ Hackett, taking a chance on Hardy would have been bold, but understandable.  As it stood on the last Saturday in April, drafting Hardy appeared misguided.

Many Bills' supporters gave Buffalo's front office the benefit of the doubt concerning Hardy because Buffalo has generally avoided the scumbags of the league.  Like I've said before, I'm not in favor of team full of choir boys, but avoiding criminals is a football decision, not a moral decision.  Statistically, criminals are life's losers and tend to be unsuccessful in sustaining a career.  Having those types of individuals on your team generally doesn't lead to sustained success on the field or in the standings.  That's why you pass on drafting Lawrence Phillips or Pacman Jones- not because you want a team full of examples for your kids.  But here's where Bills' supporters were misguided: Buffalo never gave any reason why they weren't concerned with Hardy's past.  Chris Brown gave us a vague statement that Buffalo wasn't concerned.  OK.  That Geranimo character issued an "informed" proclamation that our infallible braintrust wasn't concerned with his incidents at Indiana.  Fine.  Modrak and Hardy spoke of his problems as a misunderstanding that was in the past.  Sure.  But no one ever cleared up exactly what happened at Indiana, why Hardy continued to put his promising career in jeopardy, and therefore, why we should believe that it wouldn't happen as a pro.  Now we have another "misunderstanding"- this time with guns possibly displayed in a threatening manner, and leaving the scene of a dispute right before the cops arrived.  That's a pretty good "misunderstanding". I'm not sure why this incident would "go away".  If anything, it should conrtinue to dog Hardy until he's a functioning member of society (if that ever occurs).

Chris Brown, the Bills, Jauron apologists, and desperate fans of the team can downplay this incident, but my questiuon is why?  Hardy has shown a pattern of finding trouble very early in his life and generally that doesn't end well for the individual or his employer.  Hardy's immature and brash interview on the team's web site that Chris Brown played up as a reason why Bills fans will love the guy stunk of a desperate PR statement when the team's fans needed concrete reasons to trust the Bills weren't reaching on a bad apple in the draft. (I feel like I need to take a shower every time I read this guy- he's that slimey).  Hardy's most recent misunderstanding is much more concrete than anything the Bills have put out there concerning just what type of employee they had just hired.  Hardy made a bad first impression and Buffalo doesn't have a backup plan by their own design.  There's a reason why this team hasn't been to the playoffs this decade.  Their personnel gambles rarely pay off and they rarely have contingency plans in place.  Buffalo's track record lends itself to second guessing, unfortunately, just like Hardy's does.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Fine

you think Buffalo made another drafting error. But what should they do? Are you just saying they should have never drafted him? Or if they had drafted him and he hadn’t brandished his hand gun at his dad, you would be fine with it?

I still don’t see how you think Hardy’s “brash” interview was different than any other notable WR that plays on Sundays in the NFL. Fact is, we don’t really know what all goes on behind the scenes. Everyone though Marvin Harrison was a choir boy, but now he is involved in an incident of hanging around with criminals. Athletes keep up a “perception” to keep their image clean. However, sometimes their off-field incidents reach the papers.

I will say that Hardy has built up a long enough criminal record to understand that he has issues and has made more than 1 mistake. Kelly and Sweed were both available, and there is obviously a reason they chose Hardy. He is a freak athlete, fills a giant need, and was a TD maker. Getting around good people, coaches, and an organization will help Hardy make better decisions. To make a proclamation that this drafing of James Hardy is another microcosm of a laundry list of decisions over the past decade that have been the cause of the Bills not making the playoffs is unequivocally outlandish. The personnel decisions of the this regime has been sound and they have built a solid foundation. They took a chance on a guy and now only time will tell. Randy Moss had all those question marks coming out of college and it worked out for him. Let this guy get to training camp before you start judging him, the Bills, and the fans for giving him the “benefit of the doubt.”

On scumbags and Hardy

Some scumbags do turn into productive football players. Michael “I love crackwhores” Irvin was recently inducted into the hall of fame. As much as I despised the guy I can’t recall him missing time on Sundays because of his cartoonishly stupid off-field behavior. Lawrence Taylor was a full blown drug addict but still changed the LB position forever. I’m not suggesting that Hardy is going to be a Hall of Famer but rather that scumbags can be really good football players. Sort of savant-like…

If what we’ve read is to be believed the incident with his girlfriend was domestic violence on his part, a shakedown attempt on her part or both. No matter how many excuses get trotted out for Hardy I wouldn’t put money on it having been entirely her fault. Hardy likely did something illegal and he certainly did something stupid.

The reports we’ve read about the Mother’s Day incident don’t paint a flattering picture of Hardy either. While I haven’t heard Hardy say so (His apology seemed carefully worded to avoid any specifics.) everything I’ve seen about it claimed that he displayed a firearm in an arguement with his father. Again, that’s likely illegal (could be legal if his father was doing something extreme) and certainly stupid.

We don’t know much at all about his suspension. Hopefully the Bills checked that out with the coaching staff and got the full scoop. Once again, Hardy was suspended for something that was possibly illegal and certainly stupid.

If once is happenstance, twice is coincidence and three times is enemy action then what will the fourth time be? At the very least the team has to be worried about Hardy doing something stupid and thereby making himself unavailable to play on Sundays. My guess is that New York prosecutors won’t cut Hardy the sort of sweetheart no-jail-time deal that Irvin got in Dallas. Maybe Buffalo should invest in a security detail to follow him around and keep him from doing stupid things….

Watch for the late season cutdowns

I think the Bills are waiting to see who gets cut closer to training camp, and who becomes available for trade after June 1st now that the FA aspect of that has died down due to the new rule allowing teams to cut and trade guys at that point and spread the cap hit of the signing bonus over the next 2 years.

I have a feeling the Bills will try and nab a backup plan in case Hardy does something else really dumb.

Likely WR cuts

Can you think of anyone likely to be cut who would be an improvement over what the Bills have? Unless the Lions make a Millen-esque move and cut Williams I can’t think of any proven guys who are likely to hit the market. It would be more than a little interesting to see if the Bills would call Malcolm Kelly if he can’t stick with the Redskins given the glut of WRs in Washington. I can’t see them cutting a 2nd rounder before the start of the season but the Cards did dump that 3rd round LB (something Buster or Buster something?) last season.

Hardy's incident is two fold....

He put doubt in the fans perception of our braintrust at OBD. Think of it logically though, 2nd round picks dont make alot of money contractually, and he most definitely will have clauses in it about possession of firearms. Therefore, look at the “Risk” in taking this player. He is about 6’6” 220lbs, runs 4.51 40time. The bills will have language in his contract about his incidents. His agent has to mad because he knows with this latest “incident” Hardy has no leverage in negotiations. I see the positive in this incident. I’m not suggesting we are an Elite team in this league, but you cant have all choir boys on your team. You need some other types to add character to a team. A good team make-up can kept the “few” bad boys in check. Look at the patriots? if they can do it why cant we (aside from the SB rings)?
Lastly, have you ever heard a football player say he is not confident at his position? They all say they think they can be the best at what they do and Hardy is no exception to this. I would be upset if a guy we draft said “Well, I may not be the best but I do try my hardest”. I would rather the guy show some confidence and swagger, even if it is borderline arrogance.

Would you rather win one superbowl or Lose four in a row? Which defines your teams place in history more ... 1yr wonder or Perennially 2nd best?

absolutely

You are right on Rudy. Personally, I loved his interview, it’s about friggin time someone on this team showed some swagger and arrogance. Marshawn was the first offensive player to bring swagger last year and I think Hardy brings some much needed cockiness. Don’t get me wrong I love our high character approach but that has often led us into avoiding players who have the potential to be game-changers and dynasty makers. I’m not saying Hardy is, but at 6’6 225 pounds and the TD resume he has, I am sure willing to find out how good this guy can be! Many of the greatest receivers in the game are ball hogging, questionable characters. Randy Moss, TO, Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, Larry Fitzgerald, etc. etc. A lot of the time though, this attitude also translates in a burning desire to win. Look at Plaxico Burress, who became the model teammate and even cried after the Super Bowl, I also might add he made the go ahead TD grab as well. Remember TO playing like a beast when he was injured in the Super Bowl? To play like the best you have to know you are the best. Enough of Josh Reed, give me James Hardy, the freak who wants the ball thrown his way in the red zone and who dares any DB to stop him!

Another 3 rounds of starters in the draft?

I have not problem with

a confident attitude on the field, as long as it doesn’t lead to stupid decisions off the field. On the field, an arrogant attitude can lead to TDs and the occasional team irritation. Off the field, a player that lacks the ability to temper his arrogance finds himself in bad situations that lead to “misunderstandings” with the law. You have to be able to turn it on and off. I swear when I am out with the guys, but not at work or around my kids!

turning it on and off is the key

we just can’t let Hardy leave Buffalo, if he finds a way to get into trouble at Dave and Buster’s then I don’t know what to do

Sweed, Kelly, Hardy

I still will hold on to the fact that they had those three to pick one and they went with hardy. This means they believe that despite any character concerns, he would be the best WR. Until he plays, I will reserve judgment. Unfortunately, you’ve already passed it because of some over officious neighbor.
