Report: Buffalo offers Evans contract extension
-Details of the offer are unknown...
-It seems like Lee is optimistic about the offense...
-Look at the notes at the bottom, it says that Hardy made a "nifty" catch over Terrence McGee today. Nice.

Ehhh
LEE COMMENTS ON CONTRACT SITUATION: He didn’t want to say much about it, but Lee Evans did comment for the first time about entering the final year of his contract and the possibility of an extension.“I don’t really want to speak on it now. There was an offer put out, but that’s as much as I’ll speak on it now.”
So Evans confirmed there has been dialogue between the Bills and his camp concerning an extension. But it doesn’t sound as if things have gone very far to this point.
Sounds to me as if Evans is no where near signing a deal. The offer was probably a preliminary one to get the ball rolling.
And I will barf if Evans thinks he should get something anywhere near what Fitzgerald got. Evans is nowhere near the player Fitzgerald is. He’s an elite deep threat and only above average in the rest of his game. He should get something similar to Berrian, who is a very similar player, not something close to what some of the best WR’s in the league get….

Comparison of receivers
Evans is better than Berrian, though, so he may want something between $7 million (Berrian) and $10 million (Fitzgerald). He has more than twice as many TDs, and about 50% more yards and receptions in the same number of years.
What really surprised me when I checked their stats is that Evans has 29 TDs, and Fitzgerald only has 34, even with 100 more receptions. Still, I don’t think Evans gets the same kind of contract that Fitzgerald – probably the best receiever under 30 in the league – should get. Not sure why the original article lists him as the comparable contract; but at least they didn’t mention Javon Walker…
You know who has the most similar stats to Lee Evans? Roy Williams. They are a mere 12 receptions, 70 yards, and 1 TD apart; both had their best year last season with a 1300-yard, 82 reception season; though Williams made the Pro Bowl and Evans didn’t.
The big difference is that Roy Williams has those stats even with 9 missed games due to injury over the last four seasons; Evans has played in all 64 games. And with Williams’ contract up at the end of 2008, I’d bet their negotiations are going to be pretty similar. Whoever signs first will set the market for the other…

Evans vs others....
Fitz has also missed time due to injuries throughout his career. I suppose you can also say he’s had to share catched with Boldin, but I don’t see that as a huge issue. No matter what, Fitz is a much, much, much better player than Evans. I would take him over Evans every day of the week. If I were negotiating Evans’ deal and he said he wants Larry Fitz money, I would probably laugh in his face.
He should be compared to Berrian. They are very similar players, even if the numbers aren’t as comparable. He wasn’t a factor his first 2 seasons, but has been very Evans like the past 2 seasons. Both players are good deep threats, tend to drop passes on occasion (though Berrian is much worse there), and offer little after the catch.
I wouldn’t compare Evans to Williams either. Very different players. He brings more to the table than Evans does with his size and run after the catch ability.
I just can’t see how Evans should get an elite contract when he’s not an elite player. Unfortunately with Minnesota being idiotic and givng Berrian all that money, we will have to give Evans a similar contract at worst.

Contract
Berrian: 6 year 42 million (16 guaranteed)
Fitz: 4 year 40 million (30 guaranteed)
Fair offer Evans 5 year 41 million (24 guaranteed): Split the two.
Bills probably started with a contract similar to that of Berrian’s to show they are serious about negiations.

Sounds fair
If Evans wants to play with Buffalo, he should be happy with a deal like that.
