Day 2 OTA tidbits
Day 2 of the OTA's is in the books, here is some of the more interesting news from Chris Brown :
-No Jason Peters. No JP Losman. Moorman and Mike Viti were back.
-Leodis McKelvin got a lot of work with the first defensive unit (McGee has a reduced workload today) and fared pretty well. He showed good coverage and recognition. Looks like the Bills want to integrate him as soon as possible (hint hint Leodis, sign that contract as soon as you can!!)
-Will James looked good as well. Sounds as if he'll be one of the top 3 or 4 CB's, to no one's suprise (except Brian). I like him as much as Greer and better than Youboty at this point.
-Lee Evans sat out the team portion of today (shoulder surgery). Josh Reed filled in on the outside and looked good. Roscoe made the catch of the day and Hardy continued to look good out there. Edwards was accurate.
-The RB's caught a lot of passes out of the backfield with Fred Jackson looking very elusive.
-Good news...the QB's worked on audibles today. They will apparently be back on the table this year. I hate Fairchild.
-Kawika Mitchell has looked good.
-There were some dropped passes today, though no mention of who. I would guess Scott Mayle was a culprit.
-There was a tussle between Jason Whittle and John McCargo. No word on who won the battle royale, though it sounds very minor.

I like the tussle
It shows that energy is high. Everyone understands that this is shorts in May practice, but it sounds as if we are jumping right in.
Also, I think DJ and Fewell will be pushing McKelvin early and often, which is great. I think Jauron’s history as a DB will help out this entire defense, as well as Will James being a veteran presence with McGee. I see no real weakness on defense at this point, except possibly DE, but that remains to be seen as our smaller DEs need effective DTs to truly thrive, and that we might have this year,

i hate fairchild
as well. What a disaster he was. Go to CSU and run that program into the ground. You can have him. In fact, I would even offer to donate to pay some his salary if I Would have had the opportunity. What a bum.
Hope you know I’m on your side Turk. Bring us an offense that can SCORE for once!

No Jason Peters
I am worried about his absence. He is the only player that has been absent so far. And we know he is a candiate to be disgruntled about his contract, even though he recently signed it and is long-term. I hope this is not trouble-to-come. He is post-op recovery, though, isn’t he?

Yes he is, labill – my guess is that he’s not there because of said surgery. No reason to worry.

Viti missed due to the NFL rule about graduation
Thats why he missed the first OTA, since the kid from Detroit was in the same boat, the NFL yesterday decided to bend that rule for ALL kids coming from a US military academy due to the fact that they graduate their kids the latest out of the majority of D-1 schools, hence why Viti was on the field today.
As for Jason, Bri’s right, I think the Bills will take a very slow apporach to getting him back on the field due to the surgery on his groin. That is an injury very easy to reaggravate early on after surgery, especially for a big man like Jason going side to side alot like he would in pass protection, so I have NO issue with him missing if it means he is 100% by training camp.
Best of luck Leodis, hope you’re starting by TC and Greer and James have a great fight to be the nickel, where either I think will excel.
And I am SOOOOOO happy to hear Turk already has Trent and JP working audibles and throwing the ball a ton to our RBs, that alone right there made my day. Fairchild sucked, has always sucked and will continue to suck, I feel very very very bad for the CSU fans, who had no choice in whom that school would pick as Head Caoch, BUT I feel great for all of us Bills fans as that bum is now outta here.

just to add
reportedly Ko Simpson has been running with the first team…of course its early but I wonder what you all think about that. Happy, not happy, willing to give him a second chance?
Another 3 rounds of starters in the draft?

Considering that Ko never actually lost his job, of course he should be running with the first team. Right now, he’s our best free safety, and deserves the shot to continue to prove that.

Ko deserves to start
His range and ball hawking ability will let Whitner move down or cover TEs.

Range/ballhawking....
I’m actually going to disagree with you. I didn’t see Ko as that great in coverage his rookie year. He wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t that great either. He was a rookie, so that should improve, but I wouldn’t say he deserves to start. Right now, he’s probably our best option, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he wound up as a backup at some point this year.

Turk
will be the biggest difference for us this year. I can’t wait to cheer for a team that runs some (effective) unexpected plays. Seattle doesn’t know what’s comin’!

Chris Ellis
Still no mention of him at all. One can only assume he’s there ‘cuz he’s not on the list of no-shows. For a guy we’re expecting to play a big role in our pass rush this season this seems kind of odd. Anybody have any clue as to what’s going on with him or how he looks so far?
by Blackthorn on May 21, 2008 3:00 AM EDT 0 recs
Been wondering the same thing as well.
For a third rounder, you’d expect to hear “something” about him being there at least. Especially since Denney is coming off of that injury, and is probably taking it slow.

Yeah, mighty strange that they don’t even say “he’s not getting many reps”, yet a guy like Copeland Bryan gets a mention. Hard to figure.

No need to worry
As a rookie mid rounder, he’s well behind others on the depth chart at this point. Plus, with these practices in shorts and t-shirts, there’s really no reason to believe a DE will stand out. He’s not exactly going to be beating OT’s for sacks or stuffing run plays in this setting. I don’t expect to hear much about him until the preseason when the pads are finally on…

exactly
OTAs are where the skill players shine and the lines go unnoticed. The Whittle/McCargo skirmish was probably based off the fact that one of them was trying too hard or being too physical. The lines are just making sure they know the assignments and avoiding injuries.

Tight ends
I would like to see them determine who is going to work for them at tight end as quickly as possible giving those individuals the maximum time practicing. It would be great if somebody in that group steps up.
