Day 3 OTA news and notes
Another day of OTA's and another post from me regarding some of the main points/surprises...
-No Peters, Losman or Evans today. Some speculation that Peters may want a new deal . This is unfounded and I don't believe that as a possibility yet. Chris Brown hopes to get an update tomorrow .
-Another good day for the DB's. Greer had a good day, proving he's once again a top practice player.
-McKelvin didn't see the first team reps he saw yesterday. They went to James today, but it sounds like the staff wants to get as many guys as possible first team reps. I think the top 4 CB's seem pretty set already. Unless injury or a big surprise from Youboty/Corner during the summer vaults them ahead of others, I think this will continue.
-The DT's have all been rotating between the two positions. I like the versatility we have in those 4. Now we just need them to improve the run D and be a bigtime factor this season.
-The D seems to be getting their hands on a lot of passes thus far. I hope that will translate into more turnovers during the season. We really need to have an opportunistic group this year to give our young (and hopefully improved) offense easier scoring chances.
-There was a Chris Ellis sighting for any of those concerned. He and Corey Mace had some first team reps.
-The offense ran a lot of no-huddle today. We saw some success with that last year, albeit it was brief, but I think we'll see more of it this year. Trent seems like the type of QB that would excel in this scheme. His accuracy on shorter passes, pocket awareness and hopefully the increased receiving workload from our RB's should enable this.
-Edwards didn't have the same success in the no-huddle as Gibran Hamdan did. He's been getting the majority of the 2nd team reps. Sounds like the staff will be giving him a long, hard look to see if it's worth keeping him as a 3rd QB or keeping another guy on the PS instead.
-Dwayne Wright and Xavier Omon had their moments today.
-Reed, Parrish and Schouman had some nice plays in the red zone today. Schouman's name has been popping up a lot thus far. I think they like his receiving ability and the more we hear his name and how he's play, the more I think he'll have a good shot at being the 3rd/4th TE and maybe backup FB.
-Schobel discusses his weight loss (which actually happened 6 years ago). I never really thought he looked any lighter last, contrary to what many believed. He was also very good against the run last year. The Bills were #1 or 2 against the rush off his end last year, if I recall correctly (too lazy to look it up right now). Sounds like Aaron is a like perturbed at the suggestion that he lost too much weight last year and his play suffered. He wasn't any different last year, except that he didn't get the same number of hustle sacks that he had in the past. His pass rushing was just as inconsistent as year's past.
-The Bills may also be hesitant to use McKelvin on returns early on. This wouldn't surprise me if the plan is to get him on the field defensively early and often. I still don't see him starting right away, but he should be a big role in the nickel packages. If McGee and Parrish were firmly entrenched as our returners, who've had a ton of success in years past, I would be surprised by this 'rumor'. I think we'll see McKelvin get some returns this year as the season progresses, but he won't be a primary returner, nor should he be right away.

To extend Peters or not to Extend Peters
I believe I wrote up something along those very lines not that long ago and got scoffed at.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

It's very possible
Right now his contract is on the low end for a guy coming off a Pro Bowl.
I wouldn’t be against getting him the new deal, but he did just sign 2 seasons ago and we should look to get the Evans deal done first.
If Peters absence is due to a contract issue, what does everyone think is a reasonable deal for him? He had a Pro Bowl year, but is still learning the position and has room for improvement. I wouldn’t go to the Walter Jones, Orlando Pace, Chris Samuels level quite yet. Maybe a 6 yr $35M-$40M or so deal at this point in his career is very fair, IMO. He may outplay that deal again, but at this point I think it’s about right. We have enough cap room to do both Evans and Peters this offseason if it came down to it…

I had your back on that, if you recall.
Peters may very well be a “once in a lifetime” talent. For now, he’s the only “stud” on this team.

peters
i can’t wait to hear what this is about. Having no explanation means something is up. He signed a joke deal 2 years ago or whatever it was

It wasn't a joke deal then
5 yrs $15M after having starting for half a season wasn’t terrible. In fact, it was a smart move for both sides. Peters locked himself into a deal that would allow him to be set for life, while the Bills took a chance on a high upside player who ended up outplaying the deal. It is outdated now, but at the time it was very fair.

Jason Peters
Could it be that he is still nursing his injury from last year?

Peters and Evans and hardball
Let’s assume for the moment that Peters isn’t hurt but that he’s demonstrating displeasure with his contract. Let’s go a step further and assume that he’s royally pissed and will hold out if he doesn’t get a new deal. Is he more or less important to Buffalo than Evans? I’d say Peters is vastly more important than Evans.
First, left tackles are generally considered the cornerstones of offensive units. Teams have gone far in the playoffs (Jags this season) without elite receivers. Teams have won the Super Bowl (Ravens) without elite receivers. I can’t recall a team who has gone deep in the playoffs with a shaky left tackle.
Second, wide receivers, no matter how good, don’t impact enough plays to rate with left tackles. Every pass play is an opportunity for a left tackle to keep his QB from being blindsided. Left tackles are involved on every run.
Third, if Evans leave the Bills will turn to Hardy. True, he’s a different type of receiver but he’d clearly be Buffalo’s #1 (by default) if Evans packed up his toys and went home in a huff. The offense wouldn’t be any worse than it was last season. It likely wouldn’t be any better either.
Fourth, if Peters decides to sit out the Bills have no one who can step in for 16 games. Chambers didn’t do terribly when he filled in for Peters but that’s not the same thing as doing well. If Peters doesn’t play every single offensive snap will suffer. The offense will be worse than it was last year. Yes, it’s always possible to be worse. (There’s a site called www.despair.com to help with your ruminations if you’re having trouble seeing yourself long for the explosive offensive days of Steve Fairchild.)
While Evans’ contract situation needs to be resolved (and should have been resolved before crazy money was thrown at 2nd tier WRs) if it comes down to a choice between keeping Peters happy or re-signing Evans to a long term deal I say keep Peters happy.
On the subject of happy, Evans hasn’t said that he’s pissed about his contract situation and neither has Peters. Let’s hope it stays that way.

I get your point, but...
the Bills have much more leverage with Peters than they do with Evans. They need both players immensely because really, Lynch, Evans, and Peters are the only Bills offensive players that rank in the top 12 or so at their postion. Players like Dockery and Walker are decent and players like Butler, Hardy, and Edwards have potential on paper, but only Lynch, Evans, and Peters actually make a real difference as of now. Get Evans done and figure out how to reward Peters afterwards-even it means cutting Josh Reed, Robert Royal, and Melvin Fowler to free up some dough (that would be Christmas morning for me). I doubt Peters is planning to sit out the next three years anyway so his feelings hardly concern me in May, 2008.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.

You don't say
Get Evans done and figure out how to reward Peters afterwards-even it means cutting Josh Reed, Robert Royal, and Melvin Fowler to free up some dough (that would be Christmas morning for me).
I would never have guessed!
If those 3 were cut in favor of getting Peters signed for the long term, I wouldn’t be opposed. I’m not sure it’s necessary to have to cut even one of those guys, but it wouldn’t hurt if money was needed. The worst player of the 3 (Fowler) may in fact be the one who is least replaceable currently, if that makes any sense. I’d throw Ryan Denney in there too if it was possible to find another veteran DE for the rotation at this point. I still don’t think any cuts would be necessary to get Evans AND Peters signed.

Are we forgetting???
That Crowell is in his final year also… And I gotta side with Ron on this… A left tackle, who is key on virtually every offensive play, especially one of pro bowl caliber, is more important to the team than a wideout that may be a factor on a hand full of plays a game… Likewise, it would seem important to me anyway, to resign a defensive player who is in on virtually every play for our defense….
But can’t we all just get along!!! Personally, as I’ve said before, I want desperately, to keep this good young core of players together…. “Scuse me while my usual off season optimism begins to set in, and I look forward to OBD getting ‘er done!!!

No mention of Youbusty.
Looks like Corner is on his way to passing him already to become the #5 CB. Our top four could be as good as there is in the league this year. James is certainly more encouraging than Webster.
Wonder what JP’s personal commitment is?
