Youboty to Browns?
Anyone in favor of cutting our losses and getting something for him now while we can? Would hate to see us be forced to cut him in camp and get nothing in return.
IMHO the top 5 CBs will sort out as such:
McGee
McKelvin
James
Greer
Corner
Top 3 guys can play outside and Greer/Corner play the slot. McKelvin and McGee can play either.
With Browns losing starting CB for the year, do we ship Youboty back to Ohio and get a 5th or 6th for him?

re:
I don’t see how the Browns would want him, and if they did a 6th or 7th would be the draft pick. Unfortunately that is the way the draft goes and sometimes you miss on players; but I’m not counting the kid out yet; maybe the increase in competition will help him and he can stave off some guys and win a spot. If not, you cut him, that’s what McKelvin and Corner were brought in here for.

Agreed
I thought about this. The Browns are desperate for a CB. He is a Ohio St kid. I dont want to get rid of him for nothing as he is probably slightly better than 50/50 to make the squad. I would love to see them get Joe Jurevicious in a trade. Maybe Youbouty and a 6th for Joe J.

Jurevicius is coming off of surgery and a staph infection. He’s a native of Cleveland and will be entering his final season before retiring as a Brown. Because he wants to retire here, I think he’d retire early if he were traded.
Besides—the trade would be more of a loss for the Browns than a gain, because we still plan on Jurevicius being our slot receiver this year, while Youboty might be a 4th or 5th cornerback.

Joe J.
Is close to retiring. He might not play this year.
I have no issue with trading Youboty. If the Bills don’t want to keep 6 corners, somebody’s got to go. Might as well get what you can for one of them now.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

CB depth or a late round pick
which is more important?
With two rookies, Greer in the final year of his deal and McGee and James with 2 years left, I think I might rather have Youboty. He may not have shown much thus far, but I still want to see him given a chance. He has talent and size, so why not give him another shot to prove his worth?
Why would the Browns want him? They lost a nickel CB in Holly, but still have something like 8 or 9 CB’s on the team. If they were so worried about their depth before, they would have drafted a CB. I don’t think Youboty would add much for them.

Before signing Cousin, we didn’t have any cornerbacks on our roster with more than a year’s worth of experience (note: I don’t count Jereme Perry’s minimal playing time over two seasons), which obviously presented a problem. Granted, Youboty hasn’t had much playing time, but he’s very similar to what Holly was when we picked him up.
Also, although Holly was a nickel corner last season, he was penciled in as our starter heading into this season.

makes some sense
I think Youboty is a 50/50 to make the team this year too. The Browns could certainly use the depth. I’m not sure Cleveland would even give up a 6th rounder for him though and a 7th round pick is pretty useless.
Cleveland has Eric Wright and Branden McDonald penciled in as starters. The team likes AJ Davis and Gary Baxter should be back and healthy this season. Darnell Terrell, Jereme Perry, Gerard Lawson, Damon Jenkins and Mil’Von James are all on the roster too. If Gary Baxter’s knee(s) don’t hold up Cleveland gets very thin at CB.
At the same time you have to wonder what Cleveland is thinking. If they didn’t really like Wright and McDonald (and Holly) then they wouldn’t have traded away Leigh Bodden. If they didn’t think they had enough depth they would have signed a FA or drafted a CB. Why didn’t the Browns draft a CB? maybe they were really high on a CB that they knew was going to go undrafted. Maybe they think Terrell, Lawson, Jenkins or James are 4th round talents that nobody else noticed.

Browns
4 of the Browns CB’s dont truly deserve a roster spot on any team. Youbouty does, and he has potential to be solid or at least be a dime CB. I am of the personal opinion the Bills should NOT trade any of our top 6 CB’s unitl we have gone through some of training camp in case one gets injured. It’s not like Youbouty is costing us a lot as a 3rd round pick. To me trading for a 6th or 7th round pick is not worth it. Trading for a player who will make the roster will. We could still use a 5th WR on the roster, as I expect Johnson (the 7th rounder from Kentucky) to be a practice squad guy.

Holly/Baxter
Holly and Baxter were suppose to fight for the nickle spot. Baxter missed all of ‘07. If Baxter is not fully healthy the Browns will need a CB for sure. Sandy has no exp, Perry has played in 3 games, Davis has no exp, and I dont know much about the undrafted free agents but a team is lucky if they keep 2 undrafted fa’s on the entire roster let alone at the same position. Youbouty has a pedigree at OSU, and as a 3rd round draft pick, with 1st round projections. Even there #1 CB WRight is unproven and probably wouldn’t even start on most teams. He is probably a nickle corner at this point in his career yet he will line up as the #1 in Clev.
Good for Edwards/Evans on Monday night.

Our GM, Phil Savage, has stated that if Baxter comes back, he would fight more for a backup safety role, with options to try out as a nickel corner too. At this point, it’s still very questionable if he’ll ever play a down this season.
Wright did well for a rookie last season, but you’re right in the sense that it’s a burden to have such a young guy be asked to be atop the depth chart at corner. I’d like to say we covered the Bills’ receivers well in the 8-0 win last season, but it’d be unfair to make such an assumption considering the ridiculous weather conditions.

This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, either – the Bills finally have good depth at CB. They really struggled at that position last year, and none of the guys currently on the roster have ever proven to be very durable – INCLUDING Youboty.
I don’t think the Browns would be interested either, and certainly not because of the Ohio State connection. They’d look for a veteran addition before exploring a trade. This just doesn’t seem feasible to me, and doesn’t make sense for either side.

One of our local columnists, Terry Pluto, reported on the intrigue involved with acquiring Youboty this morning. I did a piece on DBN if your readers would like to check it out:
Pluto’s Take on Ashton Youboty to Cleveland
Would the Bills be interested in Travis Wilson or Andra Davis? I’d think no to Wilson, but maybe for Davis? I recall you asking me about Chaun Thompson earlier in the offseason…

Youboty trade
I can’t see why the Bills would trade Youboty, especially anytime soon. We should let him compete for a spot on ST and as a 4th or 5th CB. He’s got the talent and has yet to hit his stride. It’d be dumb for us to completely write him off at this point. I hate that people consider him a bust when he has yet to prove one way or another whether he will be an impactful NFL player or not. We need to hand on to him for CB depth at this point and if down the road we can trade him or someone else we should look into it. Right now, it’d be dumb to trade any CB…...

I'd rather
keep Youboty. It would be pretty dumb to trade him before training camp or even the preseason. He has a lot of talent and is physically gifted. He’s just dealt with a lot of crap coming into the NFL: he was late to training camp as a rookie because of graduation, his mother passed away as a rookie, he’s dealt with stupid minor injuries. But, when he gets on the field he plays well for the amount of experience he has. I would keep him on the active roster and put Corner on the practice squad while he learns the system. All of a sudden, our CBs are looking pretty good. I think the Bills specifically are in investing in this position to combat the Patriots spread offense.

Corner on the practice squad? Not a chance – you simply just don’t put a fourth round pick on the PS. If Youboty is on the roster, they’re keeping 6 guys; if Youboty’s on the roster and they’re keeping 5, Will James better be the odd man out.

Helping Cleveland?
Also interesting to point out that Cleveland should be one of the few teams we will be fighting for a wild card spot with this season. I would prefer to not do anything to help out their depleted secondary, especially for only a low draft pick. Keep in mind the MNF game against Cleveland could end up deciding our playoff fate

That's the idea
Make it look like we’re helping them but knowing that we could throw to whoever draws AY in coverage.

no way do i trade youboty to cle. this is his make it or break camp with the bills, obviously. if he puts it together then he can really help this team as a cb that is 6ft. tall, and there is no guarantee that our rookies are going to hit the field running. it is not uncommon for players to break out in their 3rd season, and if he does i dont want him doing it in cleveland , a conference rival. if he comes thru he is worth much more than a 6-7rd pick. on the flip side , he has not shown much so far, and his mental toughness as well as ability to learn an nfl defense has to be seriously ????
i believe he is originally from liberia, so he may not have grown up like us with a love/passion for this game, perhaps that is part of the problem. he got off to a very bad start with the passing of his mother, and although he had many issues to deal with, he missed what i thought to be an inordinate amount of time. the alarm bells went off then, not to be insensitive but i have never seen a professional athlete miss the amount of time that ay did . he was so far behind by the time he showed up that it was almost impossible for him to be a factor his rookie year. what we do not know is how much extra time did he put in the rest of that season to catch up? based on the results , not enough. he got off to an awful start here (not 100% his fault) , and has not recovered to this point. how many times have we heard reports of him spending extra time in buffalo in the off season? not the way to impress the veterans and/or the coaches. i hope jauron sat him down and told him he no longer is on scholarship at ohio st.
judging by the #s the bills used at the draft on the cb position, it is an indictment of ashton’s lack of progress as well as greer’s. the odds clearly are against ay, but lets give him his last chance to sink or swim before we throw him an anchor.

To be fair...
how many times have we heard reports of him spending extra time in buffalo in the off season? not the way to impress the veterans and/or the coaches.
How often do we hear about ANY players being in Buffalo for the offseason. Other than the QB (Edwards) or new additions, I don’t think we heard about any players being in Buffalo whether they were or not. You can’t infer he wasn’t here during the winter when nobody knows if he was or not.

good point
And why do we assume that spending the offseason in Buffalo and working out at the facilities are that great of a thing anyways. The only real benefit is some potential comradery and the thought that working out with friends and teammates might make the players work a little harder. If a player wants to go home to spend the offseason with family and friends than they should. As long as they stay in shape and do the lifting and running that the staff recommends, I don’t care where the players spend January – April.

It looks like this was an option that the Bills discussed, but decided to keep Ashton. I just hope that the Bills don’t simply cut him and get nothing in return, when they could have gotten something for him.

Other sources, however, have said that the Plain Dealer reported news from four days previous, rather than current news. Since the Plain Dealer’s old story, other sources have claimed that Youboty was indeed being shopped around.

Trade
I would swap Youboty for Davis.
The Bills would still have, McGee, McKelvin, Greer, James, and Corner, plus they could put Cox on the PS.
Davis meanwhile would give them some veteran depth at LB. Don’t forget they took a look at Donnie Spragan, so they have an interest in a vet LB.
