3rd Down Back
First, let me say this. I like Lynch and Jackson. I think they are a great 1-2 punch, and overall I think Lynch has the potential to be a great pass catching back. I am not as sure about Jackson (yet still like his skills as a solid #2 back). But since we have a lot of time to overanalyze situations I started to think and worry about Lynch and/or Jackson as a 3rd down back from a blocking standpoint. It got me wondering if with the addition of Hardy the Bills intend to use Josh Reed as a 3rd down back. We all know Reed's weakness's, but he does have some strengths. #1 is he has great knowledge of the offense and schemes (coaches say he understands the Offense better than anyone include Trent or JP); #2 He is a solid blocker; #3 He is reliable to get a tough 2/3 yards after contact once he has the ball in his hands.
All in all I started thinking about using Reed as a third down back and I have really warmed up to the idea. Sort of like the Patriots use Kevin Faulk. You can line up Hardy/Evans/Roscoe and have either Teyo or Royal at TE w. Reed in the backfield as a blocker/ security drop off. You could also line REed and Lynch on each side of Edwards with Hardy/Evans and Parrish lined up outside.
I would like to see this on a regular basis not just one or two plays a game.
Anyone else think this is a good idea?
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Nick will love this
Lets EXPAND Reeds offensive touches.
Interesting question. Lets me ponder.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
My mental health is already shot,
so I will take this one. Reed is a 210 lb WR, not a FB. For example, Viti is about 240. Different body type. Different skill set. Different mind set. If your #2 WR is a better a lead blocker and better at picking up the blitz than your fullback, you are screwed!!!
LOL!!!!!
So…. You finally admit it!!!! Welcome to the “nut house” my friend!!! I forgot long ago what “mental health” was…... Mental I know… Health?? Gotta laugh at that!!!
Sorry… Lost it…. Again…. Wow!!! Jupiter is awesome this time of year!!!.... Did you see that?? Course you didn’t!!! But yesterday you will!!! And it’ll hit you like a ton of b…. Sunlight!!! What a heavy burden to bear….
I knew ya had it in ya…. Now, I know for sure, your a TRUE, Bills fan…
For those still left outside this dedicated group… Only when, all perception of reality can be cast aside, are you one of the most elite of Bills fans…. Billieve me… I know… Every offseason brings promise… Every training camp brings optimism… By mid preseason, I’ll be predicting a Super Bowl run…
Scary part is… I’ll be “mental”.... And I’ll know it!!!! Whew…. Gut check… WOW!!! Didn’t know I had an ascending colon in there!!! Filled with all sorts of “crap” too!!!
Reed in the backfield
Doubt it happens much. It could be like we’ve seen before where he lines up back there a handful of times a game and runs his patterns from there. I would not mind utilizing him on screen passes out of the backfield though since he’s such a tough guy to bring down on first contact.

Blocking
I would rather see Reed blocking than Lynch. I believe is the best person we have to pick up/reading blitzes (and there is not doubt that Edwards will be seing a lot of blitzing). It does not do our offense much justice if we have Lynch blocking in the backfield nor does our offense succeed if Edwards is on his back all game. Whether you like it or not Reed will be a part of this offense on third down and long. I think this is one way to utilize his talents.
The third down back needs to be multi dimensional in that they must block on occassion and be able to run after short catches. How does this not fit for Reed. If we line up 3 WR and 2RB with the 2 backs being Reed and Lynch either is dangerous in motion or in the backfield and gives us more options.
I like this idea..
I think Reed will be bounced around a lot this year. First of all, he is the current starting outside WR opposite Evans.Second, he will see some time in the slot, sharing it with Roscoe, provided of course, that HArdy can pick up the offense and be a threat himself opposite Evans. Third, he will definitely be the WR of choice to be on the field on third and short situations, where a blocking WR on the outside is needed.
I’d have no problems putting him the backfield in certain situations.
Just one thing to add – I thought Lynch, and especially Jackson, did a fine job of blitz pickups in the second half of the season, and, I think they’ll only get better at it.
FB
To counter the points above. I do not see the Bills using a FB in the shotgun on third and long. So to compare using a FB or Reed is irrelevant. I am comparing using either Lynch or Jackson and Reed or using Reed as oppose to having a TE on the field. I should have made more clear in my initial post that the situations I am referring to as ‘3rd down back’ are for 3rd and 5 or more.
Krytime: I agree he will be moved around alot but I believe the amount of snaps he is on the field for will be substantially less as I anticipate him sitting on the sidelines for most situations when we have only 2 WRs on the field.
Just so I am clear,
in a shotgun formation, you would have Reed lined up as a TE? Again, this assumes that Reed is at least as good a TE as our #2 TE, which sadly enough may turn out to be accurate. I hope it is not the case. We would only be slightly screwed in this situation.
Clear
Sorry for the confusion: In a shotgun formation I would like to see (and wanted others thoughts) on putting Reed next to Edwards in the RB position…have 3 WRs and then 1 TE (either Royal, or Johnson or the new kid from Kansas). Or Line both Reed and Lynch up on each side of Edwards with no TE and 3 WR’s.
I would like to see the Bills use Reed the same way the Patriots use Kevin Faulk, as a pass catching Third Down Running Back.
For the same reasons
as Joe P. posted above, I would have to think that Josh Reed will see LESS playing time on offense this year, not more. Plus, they’ll need him on special teams…
Get the Bills back to the big game!
I don't know
Only bad things can happen when you take Lynch out of the game in order to put Josh Reed into the game. And if you are using split backs in a shotgun formation, a FB makes way more sense than Reed because they would better at blocking. Run blocking as a WR is totally different then picking up the blitz as a RB.
Not a bad idea.
They did do a flash-draw or two with Reed in the Bledsoe era, and as a tough, YAC kind of guy he averaged 4, 5 yards a run. As of now, Reed is still the most dependable over-the-middle target we have, and much to your dismay, he’ll remain that way this year unless Hardy suddenly excels at something he wasn’t a major force at in college.
I like Jackson OR Lynch on 3rd down.
GO BLUE!!!
Lynch's blocking
Lynch was a willing blocker last season. He wasn’t terrific but showed that he’s willing to block when asked. I don’t see any reason to pull him out of the lineup on 3rd down. If anything, that’s when he should be on the field. He was Buffalo’s most consistent offensive threat last season and defenses should be forced to account for him.
INNOVATION,WHY NOT! NOW IS THE TIME
Training camp. pre-season etc. I say try everything that you think may improve your team. Sure its a long shot but, Reed was a decent RB ,before he switched to WR , If he can help the offense in multiple ways , good for him, it will only help his longevity and I am sure he would not mind that. Thinking out of the box , has not always been a strong suit of the Bills but maybe its time has come , so I say ,Why Not look at it ,You never know what you may find.
Lynch's Blocking
I thought Lynch did an admirable job blocking. Overall I did not have any complaints about the effort or job performance of Lynch when it came to blocking. However, it shotgun formation a blitzing linebacker or safety takes its toll on the body when you need to block them, probably more than just an normal run. Therefore, I would rather see Reed’s body take that punishment than Lynch and keep Lynch as fresh to run the ball. I really like lining both Reed and Lynch in the backfield. Parrish in the slot, and Hardy and Evans wide. Therefore Lynch can flare out hopefully drawing a mismatch and Reed can block oncoming blitzes or be a dump off.
Be prepared for that to be incorrect. Reed’s got a spot on this roster. It’s about as certain as Trent Edwards making the roster at this point. Some of us may not like it, but he’s going to be the slot receiver this year.

Josh Reed has not played RB since his 1st year at LSU.
The name that is not mentioned above as a possible 3rd down back is Dwayne Wright, which is what he was touted as when we drafted him last year.
IMHO, let Marshawn, Fred Jackson, Dwayne Wright and Xavier Omon fight it out for this role.
Josh will be just fine in the slot and we may need him if Goodell, as expected, suspends Roscoe for a portion of the season.
Reed/Wright/etc
Reed HAS lined up in the backfield here in Buffalo. In fact, I seem to remember him even getting some handoffs a few years back. Berg is not saying to move him to RB. Instead, he’s suggesting lining him up alongside Trent in passing situations, which I can see having some positives. He can block pretty well, though I’m not sure about picking up blitzes. He would be a solid player to utilize on swing passes and dumpoffs, even screen passes as he excels at breaking tackles and picking up extra yards. I still think Reed in the slot and Lynch/Jackson in the backfield is a much better scenario for us, but I can see lining up Reed in the backfield on occasion having some success.
Dwayne Wright is NOT a 3rd down back. He is a short yardage, between the tackles runner. He is not much of a receiver and we have no idea if he can pass block. I would MUCH rather have Lynch or Jackson in the backfield in passing situations. It’s better to have quicker, shiftier backs, who have good receiving skills in on 3rd downs. I have ZERO confidence in Dwayne Wright outside of ST.

Exactly
Kurupt: That is exactly my thoughts. In my opinion, the only reason they didn’t try it last year was b/c they truly had no one to line up in the #2 WR spot and needed him to act as a WR. This year hopefully they can move people around with the addition of Hardy.
I also would like to get Lynch the ball as much as possible to those of you who dont want to decrease Lynch’s touches, but when you give a player a down or two off it can increase their effectiveness. Reed should be very fresh when he comes into games and we all know he plays hard. I have no doubt that REed would throw his body into blocks and since he understands the offense well (this is coming from the coaching staff) he should see the oncoming blitzes better than anyone…he will also see plays develope and help Trent.
