Krytime needs a jersey

In case some of you didn't read it, Krytime, Brian and myself had a discussion about  what would be a real kicka$$ retro Bills jersey. Since Kry is a season ticket holder (if memory serves me correctly), AND HE DOESN'T EVEN OWN A BILLS JERSEY! I think it is time to discuss some options for him.

This is how it will work; Feel free to delve into your closet and count up your jerseys, and list as many as you wish to admit, (If you don't want to claim that you at one time thought it was a good idea to spend $250 bucks on a game worn Rob Johnson jersey, complete with blood and urine stains, (Brian) that is your prerogative), and mention any that you think would be cool to see worn at the Ralph.

Myself, as I mentioned before am thinking of an old time linebacker, I loved Tally and Bennett, but I'm thinking even older then that, like Mike Stratton, Jim Haslett, or even Marty.

So have at it and lets hear some ideas and find out who has the biggest jersey collection.

Here it goes......

My jersey ideas for Krytime are as follows:

Frerotte or Ferguson – for obvious support reasons

Kelly – not only was he the best Buffalo Bill in history (my opinion), and you can wear the jersey for ever. Very reliable choice.

I have a list of jersey’s in the closet and I won’t bore anyone with the list, but if anyone has any suggestions for my Losman and Mcgahee jersey’s I would love to hear them.

suggestions for my Losman and Mcgahee jerseys

Make sure it will work for a Milloy jersey too!

There are a couple of stipulations that need to be mentioned, based on what krytime spoke of yesterday:

- No current players.
- No Super Bowl era players – I believe he said it was “too cliche for his age”.
- Uniqueness is key.

And for the record, the Rob Johnson jersey I purchased was in a kid’s size and on sale because those were the Flutie years – so it was dirt cheap. Plus, I knew Wade would put him back in the lineup all along. I like to think of that jersey as an early symbol of me being able to read Wade Phillips’ mind.

No current players?

Too bad – I was thinking of a Jason Peters jersey with his original tight end number. Can anyone remember what it was?

How about Jack Kemp?

Two guys discussed recently

What about JBilly Shaw or Joe D.

I like Mr. DeLamielleure. He was a mauler on one of the best lines in NFL history. Now, he's battling Gene Upshaw for the rights of retired players. That guy is a a Hall-of-Famer badass fighting for a good cause. Nothing to hate there, IMO.

I’ve also seen an Erik Flowers jersey recently floating around… just sayin’

Erik Flowers jersey

That could probably be had for less than Brian’s Johnson jersey.

Thank you Sireric

I’m sure someone here will mention a name that makes the light bulb go on. I do need to break down and buy one for this year. I’m just so damn picky about it though. I mean, I’ve bought more cars than jerseys, lived in more apartments than have jerseys, gone to more colleges than I haev jerseys. So you see, it’s definitely a toughdecision to make…

This is a tad bit off topic, but I can’t help but share. I was once an English major and took my degree a step further with a Masters in Literature. I’ve long since abandoned that career, but last year I thought I was very clever when I cut up a t-shirt and painstakingly edited my throw-back-style Spikes Jersey to say POZ where it used to say SPIKES. I was so proud of my work that I bounded in like Superman from the next room to show off my project to my wife. She just rolled her eyes and pointed out that I spelled my ‘Z’ backwards.

Guys – I really do appreciate this help…

See, I have to tell you – I’m really picky about some stuff. I’ll give an example. I’ve only "owned" five baseball caps in my life, and two jerseys.

Aside from the baseball caps you wore all year round from your little league teams through high school, it’s only five. The first was a Cubs lid back in 88. My dad always liked the Cubs, and therefore so did I. But I always had a thing for the O’s. They were my first little league team, and I loved Ripken. In 1990, I bought my first fitted hat. I switched off on those two for the next 9 years. Two hats, nine years…

In 1999, my buddy was getting married. Instead of doing the traditional stag, we spent a weekend in Boston, as he loved the Sox. I hated the Yankees my whole life too. I bought a fitted hat at Fenway on the day I saw an interleague game where Maddux pitched a gem. That hat sat with me for a few years.

2002 home opener against the Jets. Heartbreaker of a loss in OT. Hottest game I’ve ever been at. No lid. I bought a crappy Bills lid just to cover myself from the sun. Hat itself is a piece of garbage. Very disappointed with this lid.

Xmas 2007 – my baby sis hooks me up with an old school Sabs lid. I wear it as we speak…

I also have a lid purchased for me on my last day in Pittsburgh, the day of the Bledsoe comeback in the championship game. It’s a generic Steelers cap, and needless to say, it sits in a box somewhere in my apartment. I think I wore the thing for ten minutes. I don’t think it counts.

So, fellow rumblers, you can see not only am I sentimental, but I’m very particular when it comes to things like this. Much more so then the woman I’ve chosen or the business ventures I’ve undertaken. But that is a story for another time…

So far, I have liked some of the suggestions.

Buffalonian makes a great choice in Ferguson. He was my first favorite Bills QB. Kelly is too "safe." Everyone has a Kelly jersey. That’s what I meant when I said it was "too cliché" to pick guys from the SB years. I want a guy who will make you think/remember.

Krenn says Kemp, and I thought about that one too. But, I feel like if I was wearing a Kemp jersey, I’d be making a political statement. And that’s the last thing I want to do.

DCRumbler says Billy Shaw or Joe D. I loved Joe D, and I applaud his current efforts on behalf of the former players who are getting killed by Upshaw now. I do really like the Shaw suggestion. This one just might make it to the top five. I think I need to know more about him…

Freddyjj says Leonard Smith. That’s a great pick.

Blackthorn brings up a great one, Cookie. I don’t see many of those, if ever, and it fits Brian’s assertion than I’d like something unique. But, I don’t know if I can get over his hatred for Ralph and possibly the city of Buffalo. He’s old and unfortunately diagnosed with lung cancer. I don’t think they have mended fences together, but if he and Ralph could, this might really be a great choice.

Brian and Sireric over the course of the discussion had some great selections too. They named Tom Sestak, Paul Maguire, Butch Byrd, Stratton, Haslett, Spielman. Brian and I also mentioned Kalsu.

Gents – I’ll take any and all suggestions as to how to narrow done this list. Additions are still welcome. For the record, I wouldn’t be completely adverse to a SB player, or a current one. But I hope you’d present a very compelling argument.

by krytime on Jun 26, 2008 1:22 AM EDT   0 recs

A couple other suggestions

I don’t have a jersey either, but things I’d consider:

Anyone that you feel you have some personal connection to, separate from their playing for the Bills. For example, someone with the same first or last name as you, or someone who went to the same college as you.

Tasker or Hull. Hard-working players who are arguably deserving of hall of fame consideration, but will probably never get elected. They’re from the SB years, but they’re not Kelly/Thomas/Reed/Smith.

Bill Simpson. To make people do a double take when seeing the name/number. Plus he had a huge interception to preserve a playoff win against the Jets.

Roland Hooks. In honor of the hail mary against NE (also 1981. I guess that was a formative year in my Bills fandom). Plus it’s a cool name.

Norwood. Just to be a contrarian. (This may get you killed. Come to think of it, it may get me killed just for suggesting it.)

"May a nit suck Cajun geese?" wonders Red. No, we see gnu Jack Cust in a yam.

A Ralph Wilson Jersey

Put the Number One on it.

Get a Rob Riddick jersey.

That way, when you’re wearing it, you can always soar over a small crowd of people and pretend you’re scoring a 1-yard touchdown. I’m sure everyone will find it hilarious. ; )
If you want to go non-contact you can get a Butch Rolle jersey and have someone toss you a 1-yard touchdown pass over those same crowds of people.

True Riddick story: About twenty years ago, at the training camp in Fredonia, I interrupted a conversation Rob Riddick was having to get his autograph(during the autograph session, after practice.) He then proceeded to pick me up by placng a hand on both sides of my skull, lifting me off the ground, placing me back on the ground, and then he cordially signed my autograph. Most adults don’t have the cahones to lift a kid off the ground by their skull, but he did, and it was hilarious.
