re
he had 2 years left on his 4 year deal. Was due to make 445k in 2008 and 530k in 2009. Not sure why this came about now.

contract
My guess is they did it in anticipation of him getting better each year and in 2 years wanting a hefty raise. Extending him now potentially saves some dough.

Just like the extension of Peters
Except with a right guard, and earlier in his career, he won’t hold out hopefuly before his contract is up. It was evident during preseason that he is a very good player as his absence showed a big drop off in talent. I like Butler and am glad to hear the Bills doing this.

Wow
Fine and Butler sign today!!!! That, plus the fact that I am bored, calls for a new AVATAR as promised.

Sign Peters and Evans!!
If we’re going to work on extending players, I really hope we aren’t sitting and waiting on these guys, Peters especially.
I’m glad to see Butler get extended, he’s a solid player, but in the pecking order of resignable players, he would be pretty far down the list.

I agree 100% what is the mentality behind extending Butlers contract before addressing other issues, Peters and Evans in perticular. I hope they take care of Peters, he is the best player on this team and really needs to be compensated before he becomes disgruntled and chooses not to resign with the Bills if that would ever happen, I would really hope not.

Side-by-side
They probably negotiate players’ contracts at the same time, and some sign at different times. I am sure they are negotiating with Peters, Evans, and Crowell, as well as other players we’re not sure about, plus all the rookies. We might be bored, but I am sure the front office is buzzing.

This is terrific news
Butler was a solid RG last season. I’m a bit sleep deprived but I think he actually graded out higher than the other 4 linemen. He’s a consistent snap-to-whistle guy who also seems to have a fair amount of natural talent. Now that he’s two years removed from his shoulder injury he will hopefully continue to get stronger.
Peters came into the league as a tight end while Butler came in as a RT. Both men changed positions. Peters didn’t see a whole lot of playing time at TE his first seasons (although I think he caught Losman’s first ever TD pass) and Butler was injured his first season. Both Peters and Butler showed promise and were rewarded by the Bills based partly on potential but also in recognition for what they had done. The team has been consistent in dealing with players like Peters and Butler.
Following that thought, Peters has justified the faith the team placed in him and produced. I believe that the Bills are working on a new deal for Peters, one that recognizes his contributions. Besides, two of the OL already out-earn him and now that number might be 3.
All we can do is hope that the team won’t extend Fowler…

Don't bet on that, please
My wife would kill me if I reacted the way I think I would if Fowler got an extension. I didn’t get off the booze wagon years ago to be pushed back on it by a sorry excuse for a run game heavy offense center.

I really like Butler...
I think it was smart to resign him now. I also hope they do Williams soon, and maybe even Greer or Mckee. I think by locking these guys up now, they are working from the “bottom up,” as far as extensions go. I see Crowell and Peters going next. I am making a prediction now – Evans will be the last one. I think I might even go so far as to say Peters gets ten+ a year, Crowell gets 5 and a half, and Evans gets…the franchise tag next year.
Off the subject – Did Bentley sign with anyone yet? I might be borrowing one of Sireric’s crow recipes (I’ve eaten my own – too many times). I thought he’d be gone for five a year by now. I just might be wrong on his marketability…
Ron – I think you did grade out Butler very high.

Crowell at $5.5M per year is ridiculous
He’s an above average player, but not a huge playmaker. He’s the type of LB that is replaceable year in, year out. If he was offered much more than what we gave Mitchell, I’d be SHOCKED and dismayed.

Groan
Chris Brown at buffalobills.com has a blurb up about needing to extend Fowler for the much vaunted continuity. I’m all for continuity if the players in question are all great players. If they aren’t then they should always be worried about being displaced by someone better—not certain that they’ll keep getting paychecks just because they’ve been there for a while.

Nah
He doesn’t say we need to extend him. He’s just talking about continuity and how 3/5’s of the line is signed for the long term, with Peters at 3 as well. He mentions Fowler as the only player without a long term deal. I really hope he isn’t implying we should resign him….
BUTLER EXTENSION GOOD FOR O-LINE: With Brad Butler signing an extension today four fifths of the O-line is locked up long term. Only Melvin Fowler is up after this year from the group up front. With Walker having four years left on his deal, Dockery six years and Peters three, though it will likely have to be addressed in some fashion, the line is built for the long term. That’s the kind of continuity this offense will need moving forward.
