Who Likes Fantasy Football?
Hola Rumblers,
Just an FYI - because we did it last year, we're 99.9999999999% sure that we're going to be setting up one or more Buffalo Rumblings fantasy football leagues again this year. Prizes are included at no cost to you (yes, winners/losers from last year, your prizes are coming), and it's a great way to get to know some of the people you banter with on a daily basis a little better.
This is not an "official" sign-up, but more of a head count of those Rumblers who are interested in participating in a league this year. We'll have prizes for each league (if there is more than one), so come one, come all!
And to sweeten the pot, we'll have an announcement coming about a special feature to this year's fantasy games... :)
If you're interested, just drop a line in the comments or e-mail me.
This FanPost was written by a registered user of Buffalo Rumblings. Its views do not necessarily reflect the views of Rumblings' editorial staff, but are just as valued as our own.

taking a few liberties with the quotes here
Kurupt – “I won last year I’ll win this year”
Sireric – “I might make that quote public knowledge”
Kurupt – “You should, I’m not scared”
Just to let you all know that the defending champ is a little cocky.

On Yahoo
10 team league
Here was the link to last year’s league, not sure if will be available for all to see though.
I remember the starting positions being QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, WR/RB, K, DEF. I think
I also think there was a live draft, but I don’t remember
~K
by Kurupt on Jun 28, 2008 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
K’s got the positions correct. Scoring is very basic as well – 1 point for 10 yards for all positions but QB (10 for 25), 6 for TD, bonus points for yardage totals, field goal lengths, etc.
But hold off on the Yahoo thing, because as I said, we have an announcement to make shortly about exactly how and where the leagues will be played this year. :)

Lynch
I get sportingnews magazine every week and they had a top 100 fantasy player list this week and I was extremly suprised to see our own marshawn lynch at number 7 over all, behind players such as LT, AP, and Tom Brady. he was above running backs like larry johnson, frank gore and way above our good friend willis Mcgahee. I guess were not the only ones expecting a big year out of lynch :)

Count me in guys, I almost won over on CBS last year in the league I played in
But too many injuries sank me, got a feeling it’ll be harder this time around to sneak up on people by grabbing guys like Ryan Grant since I did more research than most of the bums I played against.

Some questions...
I have a feeling there would be more than 10 teams, so how would that work out? Would there be different divisions? And if that’s the case, would that mean a shorter regular season, as it would seem to me there would be more playoff games than usual?
Also, would it be possible to request that you are in certain divisions with particular teams? I know I’d like that…
What about transactions? Were they unlimited for you guys last year?
And I would think it would have to be a live draft. I’ve never participated i one that wasn’t. How does that work?
What about cash? I know it’s probably not feasible (ie – legal), but I’m sure we could all figure out a way to throw in ten bucks or something. The best league I ever heard of is one I can’t get in to; these guys won’t give up their spots. They literally play for a “kick in the arse.” At the end of the year, the “loser” of the league bends over, and each of the other 11 gus gets to literally give him a kick in the arse. It’s hilarious.
I’ve also participated in a leagues that had a “degenerate” prize. I know this goes against my better judgements (like, my take on Lynch). But it does add to the entertainment value. If you have a guy who makes negative headlines during the season (arrest, steroids, etc), you get a small bonus..
For what it’s worth, I think Yahoo does the best job out there, that’s free of course. Didn’t really care for AOL, or even ESPN.
Also, while on the subject of “gambling,” (which really is what FF is, and is a HUGE reason why the NFL is so popular (a topic for another diary)), I’d like to suggest a “suicide pool” of some sort. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s fairly simple. You pick one winner a week. Once you pick a team, you can’t pick them the rest of the year. Once you pick a game wrong, you’re out. Last man standing hogs the pot.
I’ve also been in a “league” for several years now, picking games against the spread. Everyone starts out with a “100 points.” You pick games against the spread (no teasers, parlays, or O/Us). At the end of the SB, the guy with the most points wins…
Brian – it seems like you and SB Nation will be doing something here for FF. I think anyone that participates would really like to see live scoring updates. I like that in a league, and I know most do as well.
For the record, I’ve been playing FF since 1992. Me, and three buddies I worked with in a pool hall decided to do a rotssiere style format back then. We drafted, and kept scores honor system style from the Buffalo Evening News (no internet back then – and we had to walk to school uphill both ways back then in the snow). I had Jim Kelly and Steve Young, and stupid hold out Emmit Smith. Incredibly, I finished third.

Looks like there's already close to 20 people interested
I’d suggest 2 10 team leagues. We can’t do a league with more than 10-12 teams because it just isn’t that fun when you’re forced to start guys like Ricky Williams every week.
~K
by Kurupt on Jun 29, 2008 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree - ten is the way to go. I even like eight to be honest...
But, if there is close to 20 people interested now, would it be fair to say that when the time comes, there might be about 40+ seriously interested, given the way this site has exploded?
I’ve never been in a multiple division league. How does that work with players being on more than one roster come playoff time?
I bet someone picks Ricky Williams this year, no matter what size the league is. He’ll get picked after the run on back up kickers…
by krytime on Jun 29, 2008 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think seperate leagues will be necessary
with 2,3 or 4 winners for those leagues. It’s impossible to crown one overall winner when there’s the chance the same players will be on those winners in each league. I guess overall point totals could give someone the ability to claim they were #1 of the 30 or 40 teams.
Sure someone will probably pick Ricky or Ruben Droughns, but it just isn’t fun if you have to start guys like that every week….
~K
by Kurupt on Jun 29, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But, let's not rule out an overall champ...
Say there were two “conferences,” with four divisions of eight teams each. I think that’s a fair number of entrants (64) if you ask me. You could have a regular season for 11 weeks, and then the playoffs..
Here’s the reason I bring this up – a lot of us will be in a league with your friends, co-workers, family, etc. Some of us may even be in two. Chances are, they will be very similiar leagues. Here, we have a chance to have a huge league – to do something different.
Why would it be impossible? With all of the possible combinations of players, you really think there would be a game featuring two identical rosters? No way that happens..
by krytime on Jun 29, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
64 teams
Identical rosters? Not a chance.
How would this be setup? As an example, it would be 8 separate yahoo leagues with the exact same stats/positions/rules?
I think it’d have to be capped at 40 players: 4 10 team leagues. If we want to crown a champion of all the teams, I guess it’s possible that way, though I wouldn’t call that person the true champ. What happens if one league isn’t as active and someone ends up with a bunch of FA pickups that would not fly in the other 3 leagues?
We’ll let Brian figure it out….haha
~K
by Kurupt on Jun 30, 2008 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think 40 players would be good too.
I’m assuming it won’t be going through yahoo, or any other site, but rather it’d stay here. I’m just going off of this statement:
“But hold off on the Yahoo thing, because as I said, we have an announcement to make shortly about exactly how and where the leagues will be played this year. :)”
The only way people slack off in FF is if there is nothing to play for. They have a lousy draft, get an injury, and next thing you know, they have the same roster from week 2-10. But, if there is something to play for (ie – $$), people stay in just to protect the integrity of the league. Plus, commishioners play a role here as well.
I agree with you 4 10 team league would be good. Give division winners a bye in round one, and 2nd and 3rd place a playoff spot. By my account that’d give you 11 weeks of a regular season, and four for the playoffs.
I just think you’d be more satisfied if you won overall, rather than be the “winner” of one of the divisions.

Don't sell yourself short my friend..
FF is so much about luck, it’s ridiculous. The only “true” talent is being able to keep your eye on the waiver wire, looking for guys who fell through the cracks on draft day.
I’m just glad we don’t have to draft OL. If that were the case, I’d be more than happy to just give you the title w/o having played a game.
I’m still amazed at some of the work you posted here before on grading guys.
by krytime on Jun 30, 2008 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
3 down, 11 to go
I’ve got 3 games done (Steelers, first Pats, first Jets) and have 11 to go. So far I’d take any of those centers over Fowler, even with Mangold’s tendency to hold guys when he’s missed his block. I should have that up the week of the 7th…
Like many people here I suspect that I’ll just pick as many Bills players as I can because that’s who I’m watching every week anyway.
by Ron From NM on Jun 30, 2008 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We all want Bills players...
The thing is that not many of them have the chance to be great number guys. Lynch might go top ten overall, but he might go top five in a Buffalo based league like this. Evans will get picked higher tha he probably should, and I’m sure even Edwards will get drafted.
And please man – take your time on the grading. I think I speak for all when I say we look forward to it, but make sure you save some gas for training camp and the regular season!

I have an idea
I would bet on 50 or more players. Users that read, but don’t post should feel very encouraged to join and I think they will when we get closer to fantasy draft time.
I’m assuming that we will be able to turn this into a yearly event and site tradition. What if we set things up much like the English and other European soccer leagues? For those who don’t follow soccer countries have fluid leagues that are formed every season based on the results of the previous year. The best teams like Man U and Chelsea, stay in the Premier league every year because they finish near the top, but the bottom four teams get “relegated” to the 2nd highest league every year and the best four teams from that league get promoted to the premier league. The same goes for every division. It’s part of what makes European soccer so exciting, because you literally have to earn your right to play in the league.
So I am proposing that we start from scratch and randomally create leagues with the idea that the best teams from each league will form the top league for next season. If we had 5 leagues of 10 players we could do all the teams that got to championship game or the regular season champ and the playoff champ. We wouldn’t have to set it up like England with various tiers. We could just have the top league and everyone else. Sticking with 5 leagues we could have the bottom 4 teams get kicked out of the top league each year while the other 4 league winners get the right to play in the top league.
The whole point is to have seperately run leagues that are still connected. We wouldn’t have to worry about short regular seasons and similiar rosters (which I do think would be a problem. I think if we could somehow find the percentage of all the yahoo playoff teams that had Adrian Peterson, Randy Moss or Tom Brady on them it would be staggering. It would also allow the best players who do the most pre-draft work and are the quickest and smartest to attack FA, to play with tough competition and it would allow the beginner types to play in a slightly more casual setting.
Another way to go with this would be to leave last year’s original league intact and use it as our “premier league”. All of us newcomers would then have to fight for the right to join the league with all of our favorite posters :) An England style set-up would be easy to set up and would probably run very smoothly.
And on a different fantasy topic, regardless of the way we decide to set up the leagues, the best way to determine who would be in which league is draft time. Live drafts are a must and we can set up a number of leagues that draft on different days at different times and people could then just join whichever draft works best for them.
What does everyone think?

Why start from scratch?

I like some of these ideas, but may have some reservations..
As much as I’m not really fond of soccer (although I do respect it), I really kind of like/understand the way those eros do their sport. I think it’s a great idea for building a long term idea, but…
There is only one champ each year. And I think we should try and toss around a few more ideas to figure out a way to come to such. I think this idea might work in a keeper league? I don’t know; I’m just throwing words around here to see if something sticks…
You have a really good point about draft time. I think that might be the way to go.
I see where the “problem” of duplicate players a deterrent. But I disagree with you on how much it would affect the league. I mean I understand from a draft stand point that pretty much everyone who owns the first pick will get LT and then the 20th best player overall. And then the second wil get the RB #2, and the 19th best player overall, and so on, and so on. Since the to thirty are very similiar, I could see where you might think you’ll get somewhat identical teams. But with the waiver wire, and trades, and the size of the rosters (2 QBs, 7/8 WRs/RBs, 2 Ds, 2 TEs, 2 Ks), I really don’t think that will be a problem. It would be nice if we could find out some averages.
Let’s keep throwing around some ideas. I bet we’ll come to something good eventually..
by krytime on Jul 1, 2008 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
draft times and duplicate teams
Yeah I felt pretty smart with the draft time idea. It has to be the most “fair” way to split up the leagues and prevent all the who can draft when talk. There is nothing worse than having to change the time of your draft 4 different times because somebody(s) can’t make it.
The draft isn’t where I get worried with duplicate teams. There will be trends where the best late round draft picks will all be on playoff teams. Last year Brady wasn’t typically drafted until the 3-5 round. Randy Moss wasn’t considered a top 5 WR and Adrian Peterson was a rookie with upside that people were taking as a 2nd or 3rd fantasy back. Yahoo actually had this keys to success thing and it was ridiculous how many teams that drafted those players made the playoffs in their leagues. The best teams are also typically the most active teams. last year’s playoff teams also often had guys like Ryan Grant, Branden Marshall, Roddy White and Ernest Graham. Kickers as a position are erratic are best. Nick Folk, Rob Bironas and Mason Crosby went from undrafted last year to on most playoff teams.
Roster sizes may be big, but your typical league only has 9 starters. So if teams just have 2 or 3 of the same starters it could really screw up a matchup. I honestly don’t know if that is a problem or not.
I was in 3 yahoo leagues last year.
The winner in league 1 started: (I should point out there were a number of trades that swapped superstars and multiple players throughout the season)

I see where you're coming from...
But I wouldn’t think it’d be that bad if you had a playoff game where two teams had, say, two or three of the same players. Maybe we could come up with a solution where those guys couldn’t “be dressed.” It sounds like a dumb idea (I have a lot of those), but it’s an alternative never the less.
Also, that is a fairly small representation. I don’t think it’s mathematically possible to get the answer on the % of shared players in playoff teams.
I’m thinking it’ll come down to a popular vote, so to speak. We have to wiegh the pros and cons of having a unified champ with possible roster duplications vs not having a unified champ.
I still am of the opinion though that a unified champ is the way to go.

premiership
I love the idea of having a premiership style league system. We all play in standard format leagues and I think it would be an interesting way to play FF. I would be down for something like that. I think its a pretty smart way to mix kry’s idea of a big league (which we should do, I’d be fun playing with everyone who wants to from this site) and of keeping it from getting too complicated. Keep churning out idea though, all this talk is getting me even more pumped for the football season than i already was.
