Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

My shot at the final Roster Prediction

So I'm looking through the latest Bills Digest and I see a list of players that are at Bills camp. I thought I would try to do a roster prediction using those players listed. I believe that the final roster and subsequent practice squad will be filled out with some players from other teams, that always happens. It would be near impossible to predict all of those so I'm going about this knowing it will be wrong, but here it goes anyway.

Quarterback (3)

- Trent Edwards - J.P. Loseman - Gibran Hamdan

Runningback /Fullback (4)

Marshawn Lynch - Fred Jackson - Dwayne Wright - Darian Barnes

Wide Receivers (6)

Lee Evans - Josh Reed - James Hardy - Roscoe Parrish - Justin Jenkins - Steve Johnson

Tight Ends (4)

Robert Royal - Derek Fine - Derek Schouman - Courtney Anderson

Offensive Line (8)

Jason Peters - Derrick Dockery - Melvin Fowler - Brad Butler - Langston Walker - Jason Whittle - Kirk Chambers - Christian Gaddis

Defesive Ends (5)

Aaron Schobel - Ryan Denney - Chris Ellis - Chris Kelsay - Ryan Neil (DE/LS)

Defensive Tackles (4)

Marcus Stroud - John McCargo - Kyle Williams - Spencer Johnson

Linebackers (7)

Poz - Angelo Crowell - Kawika Mitchell - Alvin Bowen - John DiGiorgio - Jon Banks - Blake Costanzo

Cornerbacks (5)

Terrence McGee (McKee?) - Jabari Greer - Leodis McKelvin - Will James - Reggie Corner

Safety (5)

Donte Whitner - Bryan Scott - John Wendling - Ko Simpson - George Wilson

Specialists (2)

Brian Moorman - Rian Lindell

Practice Squad (8)

Xaiver Omon (RB) - Jason Jones (WR) - Robert Felton (G/C) - Demetrius Bell (T) - Teraz McCray (DT) - Marcus Buggs (LB) - Kennard Cox (CB/S) - Nevin McCaskill (C)

I know that it is strange to keep so many WRs but I think that both Steve Johnson and Justin Jenkins make this team. Jenkins is solid on special teams and they really need Johnson's size, at 6-2 he is the 2nd tallest WR at camp. Parris(5-9), Reed and Evans (5-10), and Jenkins (6-0) are all shorter.

As afr as the LBs go, I think Costanzo's size plus the special teams ability of guys like Buggs and Bowen, make Ellison a goner. (just my prediction)

Surprise cuts;

Jason Jefferson - Keith Ellison - Matt Murphy - Duke Preston (surprise?) - if he's not traded Ashton Youboty.

O.K. gripe/pick/scream/yell away.

Looks pretty accurate to me

Just wondering if you listed Kelsay 4th on the DEs for a reason…I realize I like Kelsay more than most around here do, but being leap-frogged by Ryan Denney? That’s a pretty steep indictment. Similarly, I like Ellison more than many from what I read. I thought he played better than Spikes in 2006 as a rookie and I’m willing to chalk last year up to a freak injury that set him back. I could see him being a surpise cut I guess, but I’d be disappointed because I think he makes for a decent backup WLB and could even envision him filling the role of the cover LB on some passing downs…I don’t think six wide receivers is strange at all. 5-6 is pretty standard and Jenkins might not be in their plans to play any WR anyway…I’d bet that if they keep 4 TEs, the 4th is Massaquoi. Bobby April really liked his special teams play last year and he’d make for a decent replacement for Neufeld in that regard.

Never forget 56-10. Revenge.

Putting Kelsay 4th was just happenstance. I started listing the names from starter to back-up, but got lazy by the time I hit the defense.
I think there will be some surpruse cuts (there always are) So I took Ellison, I could be wrong.
I considered keeping Massaquoi over Anderson, I think you could be right, butI thought the coaching staff would keep Anderson because of his height.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Only a couple changes

I personally think Youboty, Ellison & Preston make the squad and Scott, Costanzo get cut and either Johnson ends up on the practice squad or 1 TE from your list gets cut. I had been predicting Royal as my surprise cut for months but read some postive stuff about his training so I am leaning toward Anderson yet I do not believe they keep 4 TEs.

So you would keep 6 CBs and only 4 Safeties?
I kept Costanzo over Ellison because Costanzo is a better special teamer and has more size.

ehhh

I seriously doubt derek fine will be ahead of derek shcouman in fact id favor schouman to start but thats just me. Digiorgio would not get beat out for the 4th spot by Alvin Bowen already unless bowen shows hes somethin real special. Digiorgio did a solid job filling in for poz last year considering his size and Jauron would want him as the first reserve. And the safties is confusing because u have bryan scott and john wendling in front of ko simpson and idk if that means that one of them will start FS over him and i guarantee neither of those 2 will start over ko.

Like I told Superfan with Kelsay, don’t take the position that I put them in as where they rank on the depth chart. Just because I put Bowen ahead of DiGi, doesn’t mean that Bowen is higher on the depth chart.

6 CB's & 4 S

Yes. I have said this for months now and in the offseason. It is my opinion that if Youbouty is not traded then they go to camp with 6 corners which allows the safety’s to be safety’s.

I dont think Corner will be active on many Sunday’s, yet I believe he makes the squad but I think Jauran will want 5 active CB’s which will include Youbouty. Also, I believe they will be working with both Wendling and Cox to be a backup safety. If it truly looks like neither guy is NFL caliber then there is a possibility I could see 6 CBs & 5 Safety’s or a surprise cut being Wendling (yet he is good on STs).

This is an interesting thought

In my head, I can’t see them flat out cutting Youboty and I think McGee/McKelvin/Greer/James/Corner are locks to make the team. Maybe John Wendling takes a step and beats out Scott for the backup SS job and Buffalo only keeps four safeties. I kept going 6 CBs and 5 safety’s and that seemed excessive. Wendling has to make the roster for special teams, but maybe he’s ready for a larger role on defense…I’m going with it. Change my prediction to cutting Scott and keeping Blake Costanzo because I think 6 linebackers was a little light.

8 OLs

I generally like your roster, but I think having 8 OLs, while having 10 WR/TE, is too risky. By simple math (although you can’t really do it that way), you have 3 subs for 5 strarting positions, while having 6 subs for 4 spots - any injury to a starting (or subing) OL will really create a problem for the Bills. I do think the dilemma is that the 6 WRs and 4 TEs are “better” than the 9th OLman, but I’d hate to go with just one backup for two starting OTs (I guess Whittle can go outside, but then who will be the sub for the Gs?) - the fact is that the last TE will never play at all anyway. The Bills really have to make a decision on which 4th TE to drop, in my opinion, since I ‘d keep 6 WRs. I also like 3 TEs, since I’d like to have Fine have more playing time, to see what he can do (or not do), since with 4 TEs, I suspect he’ll be buried and not play at all.

My thought was that, Chambers backs up the Tackles, Gaddis backs up inside and Whittle backs up everywhere. plus there are 3 OL on the practice squad.

Let's see here...

I’m thinking I’d rather have 9 OL, so I’m keeping either Preston, or Murphy, but probably leaning toward Preston, given his versatility, even if that means he’s just versatile enough to stink at multiple spots. Can Murphy go on the PS? My gut says no, but I’m not sure.

To make up for that spot, I would then be sending Johnson to the PS squad. The only way I see him staying if he shows exceptional ST play, or if there is a surprise WR cut (Reed).

I’d also like to keep Jefferson, if only because I have reservations on Ellis. I think Jefferson gets a bad rap. He’s a tweener, and I think was blamed a lot for the poor DT play last year.

Lastely, I’m keeping Ellison, and letting Banks or Costanzo fight it out. I know Costanzo played well last year on STs, but who’s to say Ellison wouldn’t play just as well? I think OBD likes the kid. I have no opinion on Banks, so I’d probably cut him just for that.

Oh, one more thing.....

I’m definitely keeping Mckee. Dude blocks shots, and plays a physical game. Brings character to the dressing room.
