Heiden for Youboty?  Thoughts?

First, I do NOT think we should make any trade until at least August 20th or so to see if we get any injuries and to determine what we have at the CB and TE position.

However, if Reggie Corner can be a respectable 5th corner and it does not look like any of our TE's are cut to be NFL starters then I would hope the Bills would look to bring in Browns TE Heiden for Ashton Youboty via trade.  It seems to make sense for both teams.

Thoughts?

I also believe as posted elsewhere that if Youboty is not traded he will be on the roster.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I don’t mind the idea. I don’t see Heiden as an answer to our TE situation, though; he’s more of a stop-gap than anything. I also think corner is a far more important position to be deep at than tight end, and I don’t think Heiden’s impact would be great enough to outweigh that. I’m 75% sure I’d rather keep Youboty as the sixth corner than trade him for Heiden.

I could probably be talked out of my stance though.

Heiden

I am sort of high on Heiden as I believe he is a really good blocking TE. Also in 05 and 06 he avg about 40 catches about 350 yds and 2-3 TDs which are good stats. I agree corner is an imp position but Heiden could be an upgrade as a potential starter. While he is certainly a stop gap (no question there) he could have a solid impact especially if Peters extends his holdout and the line needs blocking help. Heider is listed at 6’5’’ and 270 so he does bring size and some experience.

Yeah, but he's no receiving TE

I don’t see that he’s much of an upgrade over Royal. Sure, he’s got experience; but he that also means he would be the third-oldest player on the Bills roster (behind just Whittle and Moorman). And over the last three years, he averaged 7.4 yards/rec (4.0 YAC), which is rather abysmal.

What's the point though

Does he upgrade the TE spot? Maybe, but it wouldn’t be by much. We don’t need another blocking TE IMO

Hmmm, then how about this

We trade Youbuty for Heiden, and pick up Eric Johnson from the waiver wire since he was just released by the Saints. That would give us a much better receiver/blocker pair of TEs than Royal and Anderson, and they can be had for the same amount of money or even less in regards to Johnson since he would be on a “Prove It” contract to show he can stay healthy for a season.

We would then have Schouman, Fine, Johnson and Heiden giving us a blend of 1 true receiving TE, one blocking TE who can CATCH, one FB/TE combo player and a developmental prospect. And they would all be an improvement over what we have now.

And they would all be an improvement over what we have now.

But still pretty mediocre, if you ask me.

I’d still rather keep the corner and see what we’ve got in guys like Schouman, Fine and Anderson this season.

I’m with K.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Mediocre

We are not at least not in ‘08 going to have above-avg TE’s not gonna happen no matter what we do. But I think the best situation is to consider options outside the current 4 on the roster. Give it 2 weeks to see if anyone plays better than we expect and if not then consider a Johnson a Heiden. Personally, I Royal is healthy and blocks well then Heiden is not needed. I for one dont have faith in Royal and a good blocking TE can go a long way especially if Peters has an extended holdout.

How about

trading Youboty, Peters, and a first rounder for Joe Thomas?

Get the Bills back to the big game!

Johnson

If Eric Johnson can stay on the field he is an excellent pass catching TE. Talent wise he is anywhere from 5th to 8th in the league. I would be ecstatic if we would take a chance on such a talented guy.

by Buffalonian on Jul 29, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Talent wise?

Then why does he keep bouncing around the league so much? He’s got nice hands, but isn’t much of a threat at the position.

Yes

I couldn’t disagree with you more. He is injury prone, but has always been a threat at the position. His injury issues is why he bounces around, not his pass catching ability. Based on your comment, you couldn’t have watched him play much.

by Buffalonian on Jul 29, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Ive got to admit that I thought he would be a waste of effort to even look at, however after looking him up I realize that he has only played for two teams (S.F. &N.O.) and has only missed 9 out of a possible 80 games in his career.
I don’t see the Bills going after him but if they did he could be good.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on Jul 29, 2008 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Johnson also missed the entire 2003 and 2005 seasons. So you can change those numbers to missing 41 out of 112 games. Not so good.

by kaisertown on Jul 30, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

That makes more sense now. I thought he missed more time than that.

Trade

Blitz I assume that was a joke? I bet Madden would let you accept that though.

Johnson: After the references to Johnson I tried to find out what hi story is. Supposedly he is injured. He believes it is only a 2-3 week inj but it could be worst and even if it is only 2-3 weeks it doesn’t give him much time to be ready for week 1 nor is there a guarantee it wont affect his speed.

Berg79

Yes, that was meant to be a joke. That’s my backhanded way of saying I would much rather have Peters in camp. Not that Thomas would be a bad addition to the team, mind you…

Eric Johnson would be a decent pickup if we’re looking for pass catching ability (which I believe we are). He could fill the Michael Gaines role this season, but hopefully better than just one great game.

Get the Bills back to the big game!
