OBD Full of surprises

I think they are making a statement that says, we are happy with some young player’s pperformances and are getting deals done as soon as possible. Also, I think a higher pick like Whitner let’s say, will wait until the peak of his potential is realized, because that way he can make the most money, thus why other players are getting signed, or re-signed first.
I think it is a good move, and am interested to see more.

This town needs an enema!

A decent move

Williams is a guy who is better than I thought he was. He’s not a world beater (and hopefully not a wife beater) but he’s the type of guy who will look better as talent around him improves. Hopefully, Stroud is that talent upgrage.

Anyone else getting the feeling that OBD is determined not to have any contracts come due in the uncapped year?

by Ron From NM on Jul 3, 2008 4:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

good thought ron

both Butler and Williams were scheduled to become free agents after the 2009 season (i.e. March 2010).

Here is the list of remaining players that have two years on their contracts left:

Terrance McGee (CB)
Josh Reed (WR)
Ryan Denny (DE)
Ashton Youbotye (CB)
Cortney Anderson (TE)
Ko Simpson (S) – Restricted Rights Free Agent

the only real significant player left is Terrance McGee. Other then that Anderson and Youbotye very well may not even be on the roster by then (or by the end of August this year) and Denny and Reed are very much replaceable with younger talent with potental.

So it very much looks like they are moving everyone off of 2010. Smart move. I like when they have seasons where they don’t have to worry too much about their own (i.e. this past off season). Add in the possibility of an uncapped year and that makes it all the more attractive.

That said, next off season is going to be all about keeping thier own. I doubt we see any big free agent pick ups like we did the last two years.

Here are the plaers whose contracts are up after this upcoming season:

JP Losman (QB)
Gilbrid Hamden (QB)
Lee Evans (WR) – Signed through 2009, but last year voidable
Justin Jenkins (WR)
Fred Jackson (RB) – Exclusive Rights Free Agent
Derek Schomen (TE) – Exclusive Rights Free Agent
Tim Massaquoi (TE) – Restricted Rights Free Agent
Marvin Fowler©
Duke Preston (G)
Jason Whittle (G)
Kirk Chambers (T)
Darian Barnes (FB)
Jonathan Evans (FB)
Ryan Neill (DE/LS)
Copeland Brian (DE) – Exclusive Rights Free Agent
Jason Jefferson (DT)
Angelo Crowell (LB)
John Digorgio (LB) – Restricted Rights Free Agent
Keith Ellison (LB) – Restricted Rights Free Agent
Jabari Greer (CB)
George Wilson (S) – Restricted Rights Free Agent

Hmmm, I see the following still in Bills Unis after next off season

Goners:
JP
Massaquoi
J. Evans
Whittle
Ellison
Jefferson

Keepers:
Evans
Jenkins
Jackson
Schouman
Preston (not that I want him, but the Bills do for some reason)
Neil
Barnes
DiGorgio
Wilson

Maybes:
Fowler
Greer
Chambers
Hamden

Thats how I think the Bills approach it next season, the guys they toss, JP et al, all can be replaced with UDFA and late draft picks, especially if Hamden comes along, he would move from a Maybe to a Keeper for them then.

Preston over Fowler?

I see it the other way around. If the Bills were more likely to keep Preston he would be starting in place of Fowler. Don’t count on Whittle. He was first off the bench until he was injured.

Freudian slip?

It should have read, “Don’t count OUT Whittle.” I wouldn’t count on him either…

by Ron From NM on Jul 3, 2008 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whittle is a Goner or Maybe honestly

He has thought of retirement each time the past 2 seasons, so what if he decides to go? I put him in a Goner spot in order to have a worst case thought process going on.

Nice lookup here jri111

There are some tough choices to be made, even after the big names (Evans/Crowell).

Out of your goners, the only one I could make a case for is Ellison. I think he’s a nice ST/back up. But, this spot certainly could be upgraded, or at least remain at a status quo level with a low FA/mid draft pick next year.

I see a difference in our keepers. Aside from Evans’ talk, I’d have to see how the season pans out for Jackson, Schouman, DiGorgio, and Wilson. These guys have a lot to play for this year. I don’t think Jenkins is a “Tasker.” He could be replaced easily. I’m not even sure Preston makes the team this year, and Neil and Barnes are nobodies.

As far as the maybe’s go, I think Greer should definitely be kept. I think he’s great depth. They seem to have put some time into Chambers development, and I think they like him. Or maybe they’l like him until another comes along (Bell?). I say keep him (again – depending on this year). Who knows anything about Hamden?

I just realized I responded to WABillsfan. My bad jri111.

Very Interesting

I think this front office has done a darn good job since Brandon took control. A decent draft, some dramatic but not overwhelming free agents signed, and rewarding and locking up a couple of young players who demonstrate on the field the work ethic you want the rest of the team to emulate. I especially like the fact that the front office seems to be concentrating on linemen.
Brian, didn’t you hint that something was going to happen with Williams in yesterday’s thread?

Credit where credit was due: I’d love to take credit for that prognostication, but it was ALL Ron from NM.

Happy coincidence

I just happened to get done with the 1st half of the season looking at opposing centers—which meant looking at the DTs they faced…..which meant Williams. Half of everything is timing.

I'd like to sort of pat myself on the back on this one...

On June 22, I wrote:

“Is anyone as surprised as I am that it seems like Williams was getting more 1st team reps than McCargo? If that’s the case, wouldn’t it make some sense for the Bills to be proactive in extending his deal?”

Dumb luck?

Thank you...

Here’s a laugh for you – I had to look that word up.

I’m glad they did this. I like Williams; love his motor, and effort. This is the way to build a successful franchise if you ask me. Identify your good young talent, and lock them up before they even have a chance to reach the market.

It just makes me wonder – whose money are they spending with the Butler/Williams extensions? Peters, Crowells, or Evans?

by krytime on Jul 3, 2008 7:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe nobody

I’m not sure that the money spent on Williams and Butler has any impact on the other guys.

Butler was signed for peanuts. If Butler is going to be a starting guard for 1.5 mil a season, then he probably creates money for other players.

Williams’ contract doesn’t give him a raise for a couple of seasons. The Bills can count on other salaries coming off the books and some high priced Toronto ticket sales by the time his extension kicks in.

I find it interesting

extend Butler and Williams (both good moves and I’m not complaining about that) and nothing on Evans, Crowell, or Peters.

I’m not sure what to read into it, if anything at all, I just find it interesing.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Keep in mind, also, that “nothing” means “we haven’t heard anything publicly”. There very well could be something going on behind the scenes without us knowing about it.

Who are you kidding

We all know that you are plugged into 1 Bills Drive. If anything was going on I’m sure you would lets us know ;)

You have to think that "something" is going on there...

I think they run their organization, contractually speaking, way better than their hockey counterpart has done over the last few years…

I think it’s also very typical of the way they do some things. None of us (I’m assuming) really had any inkling that these two extensions were to occur. I think it’s safe to say no one saw the Parrish one as well. Under this administration, it seems like they tend to keep things under the radar. Maybe that’s why we haven’t heard a peep from the Peters/Crowell camp, and barely a blip from the Evans one.

Kaisertown – I don’t exactly agree with you when you say these extensions don’t t impact the other guys. Under the Bills cash to the cap philosophy, don’t their signing bonues “count” under this years cap? If so, wouldn’t that be close to about 8 million, or more? If so, that’s a significant portion of this years cap.

Don't we have a blogger named Geronimo on this site? Where are you Geronimo?

You usually know something about the behind the scenes stuff. Give us a hint. The front office is driving the fans crazy here.
Nothing on Hardy or McKelvin and nothing on Evans, Peters, or Crowell, but they sign four low ranking draft picks and two young overachievers who nobody expected to be priorities. What is the philosophy here?
One thing is clear. This Brandon regime does not negotiate in public. Very discreet about commenting about any thing in public, including Lynch’s little off-season soap opera legal mystery of the week series. I think that’s just smart business.

by Defensewinsgames on Jul 4, 2008 7:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe

Their signing bonuses do count under whatever salary cap they have created for themselves. I think the 8 mil number is off though. Williams got 5.7 mil in guaranteed money, but I’m guessing that about half of that is signing bonus money. The other 3 mil is probably in other easily acheivable bonuses.

Do we know what Butler got signing bonus wise? I tried to play with the numbers and I got a total of about 3 mil in guaranteed money. Again, I’m not sure if that will all be signing bonus money that is counted right now though.

So it might be 8 mil, but I’m betting the total is closer to 4 or 5 in signing bonuses.

And the Bills could always make an exception with their cash to cap philosophy and just count the Peters money in a different way. It just seems like the Bills would be stupid to extend 2 guys and then go the negotiating table with Peters and not have enough money for him. I don’t think they have any intention of resigning Evans before the season starts and their plans regarding Crowell will depend entirely on the kind of money he is looking for.
