Bench Edwards for Favre?

Star-divide

On another site, we were discussing whether the Bills should go after Farve if he becomes available.  I was against the idea, but many others though it would be a good move.  My main points against signing Farve were:

     1.  Does anyone really think we are a QB away from getting to the SB?

     2.  If the Packers, who were one game from the SB, don't want Farve, then why would we?

     3.  These end of career trades very rarely seem to work out (see Joe Montana). Edwards is the man this year for the Bills.

     4.  Jauron will not pull a Mularkey and screw with Edwards' confidence.

     5.  Farve is not going to last more than one season.  The odds are good that Farve will get injured.  He will want to quit after one year.

I would be very interested in hearing what all of you have to say.

No, the Bills are building for the long term, and Edwards is the long Bills best bet at QB

Absolutely not, I don't want "Paris" Farve

This would only hurt/delay Edwards’ development….

On a sidenote, I think it’s pretty pathetic how much Farve enjoys media attention and being in the spotlight. He has dragged his “decision” out to the fullest every offseason for the last 5 years which only hurts his team. I really think he gets a chub when he sees himself on ESPN. It is downright terrible the situation he is putting the Packers through if he really decides to comeback, just because he has the decision making capabilities of a 9-year old girl.

Another sidenote, I’m not shocked at all. When I first heard of his “retirement” I turned to the closest person and said ”$100 he plays next year.”

Favre isn’t coming back. If the Packers don’t want him, he won’t play anywhere else.

by Brian Galliford on Jul 9, 2008 12:22 PM EDT   0 recs

The talking heads

(Jamie Dukes, among others) seem to think that Farve was gently pushed into retirement by the Packers. And, there current strategy of politely asking him not to come back is pissing Farve off. If Farve asks to come back and the Packers don’t want him, I think he will ask to be released or traded.

by Joe P. on Jul 9, 2008 12:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If Favre wants to come back, the Packers have to either let him come back, trade him or release him. I have no clue what is going to happen. I think the most interesting part of this is that the two best fits for Favre, Minnesota and Chicago, are division rivals.

by kaisertown on Jul 9, 2008 1:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree

The Vikings would the best chance to win a SB, plus play in a nice warm doom. The Bucs are also a possibility. The Ravens are thought to be the most likely AFC team he could go to. Releasing Farve would be worst case for the Packers. If he went to the Vikes and took them to the SB, the GM would look like a dumbass!

by Joe P. on Jul 9, 2008 1:08 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

My honest opinion is this

McCarthy and Thompson should go to see Farve and ask him straight up if he wants to play again. If he says yes then they should do what I would do.

Tell him to go sit on a pole, and then work out a trade to the chiefs for a 6th and 7th round pick next season just to spite his ass. Then go back to Farve and tell him this is all he is worth: “You got a choice Brett, keep your sorry punk ass retired, or we ship your ungrateful carcass to the Chiefs.”

Fear the mighty helmet wearing gopher, he is coming for your soul....

McKelvin and Hardy - rookies of the year

i agree

I think the Pack would be crazy to cut him. Trade him to Baltimore or wherever it won’t come back to bite you and force him into retirement.

Would Favre even provide much of an upgrade?

I think last year was an anomaly for him. He had stunk for 2-3 years or so prior. He’s a risk taker who’s skills have declines, though his mind never really thought that. I don’t think Favre would help us and I dont’ think he’d be a significant upgrade over Edwards (and I’m not trying to compliment Edwards’ play either).

It's been down hill for Farve since...

Something about Mary.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

bills-favre

obviously it would never happen as the bills won’t pay him and he won’t want to go to a team that hasnt made the playoffs in a decade.

with that said, i would love to have favre for a year or two. a few reasons:

1. im not worried about stunting edwards development as he would only be 25-26 when favre left and im not convinced he will ever be an excellent qb (he may be good). he hasnt shown anything that indicates he will perform better than favre for the next year or two, and he can sit behind a HOF qb.

2. this year would be ridiculously exciting if the bills signed favre. we would be relevant whatever that is worth.

3. obviously can handle buffalo weather. still has a cannon.

4. the chain works as well (i think). wyche worked under walsh and schonert is employing wyche’s blueprint. holmgren (worked under walsh) and favre’s green bay offense was west coast and kept pretty similar in the years after holmgren. even if it doesnt, favre can fit a ball in anywhere and would adjust quickly.

5. favre makes young receivers better. green bay rookie receivers have had great years in the recent past, including last year (blanking on the receiver’s name, Greg Jennings maybe and Javon Walker a few years back). hardy, lee, parrish, et al would benefit from playing with favre, and there is a better chance hardy would perform immediately than with edwards.

5. in response to the original post, i do think we are a very good qb away from being a playoff team. our defense has improved, solid line, solid rb, a lot of potential with the receiving corp. TE, QB, and DE are probably our weakest points, and filling the decade long hole at quarterback would make for a great year.

favre will throw picks and do stupid things, but he also wins football games (more than anybody ever). will never happen, but actually gets me excited in July for whatever that is worth. you have to be kidding yourself if you would honestly be happier with edwards starting next year instead of favre. im all about sticking with edwards for the long-term, but he wouldn’t be hurt by sitting behind a legend for a year (and perhaps two).

Long term vs short term

Favre would be a short term solution at best. Yes, it would be nice to make the playoffs at least before the Lions and Cards do, just to get rid of that damn graphic on ESPN’s draft coverage. With that said, if Favre came to Buffalo for a season or two (which I agree won’t happen) the team would be right back where it is now two years down the line. If Edwards is going to be the man let him take his lumps and improve because of them. Besides, do you really want the retire-don’t retire soap opera to move to Buffalo?

by Ron From NM on Jul 12, 2008 10:01 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i hear you

i understand what you are saying, i just dont see how it sets us back. aaron rodgers sat for three years and the packers are convinced he isnt so irreparably damaged that they need to find somebody else.

edwards is a third round pick going into his second year. he is going to struggle. favre could offer a year or two of performance, while also assisting in edwards’ development. then when favre retires/moves on after a year or two, edwards slides in. if he was going to fail now, he will probably still fail then, but at least we got a year or two with a legitimate NFL qb in theg process.

by jmorris0823 on Jul 12, 2008 3:15 PM EDT   0 recs

Painful

It pains me to say this as I think Farve is overrated but with the dynamic of our team, young rookie WR will be #2 (Hardy), speedy WR (evans) #1, good line, good RB, good D and special teams farve for 1-2 years makes us a much more legit playoff contender and sleeper SB contender. He knows football, blitzes etc. The fact that the line is so strong makes the Farve move credible as teams wont stack 8 on the line.

Yes, it will stunt Edwards growth. However, as jmorris stated there is a lot Edwards can learn from a veteran. Edwards is young and could still use a season to learn (which he will from Farve).

The salary of Farve is a problem though.

by Berg79 on Jul 14, 2008 10:44 AM EDT   0 recs

Couldn't disagree more

Berg, although I see your logic, and agree that a good line should make a difference to Favre (if he actually plays this year), I think Mr. Galliford is right, especially about team chemistry. This is a young team and much of its roster went through a war together last year. They saw one of their teammates nearly die on the field together, and another 16 players go down for the year. It remains to be seen if that experience helps the team bond together, and therefore play better. But bringing in a guy who is at least 10 years older than 3/4 of the roster and has no connection with the team or last year’s experience, and little reason to play another bruising season except to satisfy his own ego, makes no sense to me.
Set aside Brian’s point that Favre is not the conservative type that Jauron prefers. It’s oil and water. Unless Edwards absolutely costs us games, he is the future, at least for this season, and possibly for a long time to come.

Can't see Favre in a Bills' uniform

Apparently, neither can the Bill’s front office, or it would have happened by now…

Get the Bills back to the big game!

by Blitz on Jul 15, 2008 3:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Oh, I don’t think the latter part’s true at all (the “or it would have happened by now…”). Favre is still a member of the Packers, who are dealing with a mess thanks to him. Favre will probably have to wait a very long while before he’s got a new team, if he gets one at all.

by Brian Galliford on Jul 15, 2008 3:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Did you see that a bunch of Packer fans rallied for Farve. They want him back.

Poor Aaron Rodgers, he has no chance what so ever.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on Jul 15, 2008 6:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Did he ever have a chance? The Packers did draft two QBs in April, after all. I’d put more money on Brian Brohm being the long-term starter there than Aaron Rodgers. (Though I think that’s unfair to Rodgers – I think he could be very good.)

by Brian Galliford on Jul 15, 2008 6:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If they don't believe in Rogers,

then why the charade? Bring Farve back and pull a JP with Rogers.

by Joe P. on Jul 15, 2008 8:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Fair point, but you can also say they’re pulling a JP with Rodgers by drafting Brohm in the first place. Just like when the Bills drafted Edwards.

by Brian Galliford on Jul 15, 2008 8:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Very nice,

But that still leads us back to the original question. Why the charade with Rogers? Farve is no Holcomb? And, if they do pull a JP with Rodgers, and Farve pulls a Holcomb, I don’t think that Brohm is ready to pull and Edwards, IMO!

by Joe P. on Jul 15, 2008 11:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

WOW, out of Farve's mouth

He was told by Mike M.,”Playing in Green Bay is not an option”. If you have not seen the interview on NFL Live, it is a must see!
