Observations from FedEx Field
Here are some observations I made while attending the Skins/Bills game yesterday evening:
Trent Edwards: Edwards didn't have a great game, I think everyone knows that, but his performance wasn't what concerned me most. Iit was his lack of control/leadership of the offense. The starting offense seemed lost. Players out of position, confusion of assignments, pre-snap penalties. As the starting QB it's Edwards’ responsibility to make sure players know their assignments and where they should be. Edwards has to be the leader of that offense. He didn’t look it last night.
James Hardy: Very inconsistent first performance. The TD grab is a perfect example of his potential, but he must know the offense and run much better routes. The miscommunication with Trent was definitely his fault. It looked as though Hardy was running a fade and Edwards was throwing a quick hitter. The talent and skills are there, but he is still very raw. Overall though, you have to be encouraged by what he brings to this offense.
Running game: As Brian noted on the front page, I definitely think the lack of a running game had to do with the O-Line and Peters' absence, rather then the backs. Marshawn Lynch ran as hard as ever in his minimal amount of carries and Freddy Jackson is a legitimate back up. Dwayne Wright and Xavier Omon didn’t show much, but that’s why they are number 3 and 4 on the depth chart. Peters needs to get back though. The right side of the O-Line was atrocious in run blocking (we’re in trouble if Kirk Chambers has to play any extended period of time). I was very impressed with Langston Walker at LT; however, he's no Peters.
Pass protection: I was very pleased with the pass protection. Walker did a good job filling in for Peters on the left side and overall the QBs had a lot of time to throw. The only sack on Losman was result of a poor blitz pickup by the backs – not the O-Line. Overall, very encouraging.
Defense Overall: Overall, I wouldn't worry too much about the defense. Both Pro Bowl D-linemen (Aaron Schobel and Marcus Stroud) played a total of 4 or 5 plays. Same with Terrence McGee. Donte Whitner and Angelo Crowell didn’t even play. That’s nearly half of the defense. What we saw out there most of the game was last year’s defense – not the 2008 version that we are expecting big things from. Make no mistake about it, these guys are the cogs that make the defense work; without them, the team is in trouble. This leads me to my biggest concern about this team in general: a total lack of depth.
Team Depth: It’s clear that if this team is going to break the 8-year long playoff drought, it’s going to be on the shoulders of their starters and new additions: Stroud, Kawika Mitchell, Paul Posluszny, Lynch, Peters, and Hardy. Any of these guys go down, and this team takes a huge step backwards. Stroud is the cog that makes the defense run, Lynch is the game-changer the offense needs, and Peters makes a very average line very good. If any of these guys go down with a long-term injury, it’s going to be a long season. Guys like Chambers, John McCargo, John DiGiorgio, Keith Ellison and Josh Reed are not good enough to get this team to the playoffs. Depth is a very big concern to me. Lets hope that this team stays relatively health this year.
Other observations
- McKelvin was as good as advertised as a returner. I like the idea of having both him and Parrish back there on punt returns.
- They rotated the DBs throughout the game. It was hard to see which ones were in at any given time, as they rotated almost every play. I think this unit will be okay; however, it may take a while to figure out the best combination of players back there.
- Poz was very good at times and also a little slow at other times. The TD run on 4th down was through the hole where he had gap responsibility. He filled it, but a split second too late and didn’t have enough leverage to keep Portis out. He looked like a player that has only played three regular season NFL games. We have to remember that he is still very raw.
- Stroud didn’t play much, but he did come in on the third and short at the goal line and proceeded to cave the center of the line to stop the back for no gain and force a 4th down conversion. Stroud looks like the real deal and I can’t wait to see him play on a more regular basis!
- JP Losman looked good. Comfortable and good decision making. Ron is right – Dick has a style he likes, and JP doesn’t fit that style. Edwards is the starting QB for Dick unless he gets injured (no matter what I believe or the fact that I want to rip my eyes out every time the offense “dinks” and “dunks” down the field).

Chambers not good, not atrocious either
With the first unit he did okay at RT on run plays. He wasn’t great but he didn’t screw the pooch either. Keep in mind that the first unit ran 4 times, and faced 8 man fronts on 3 of them. so long as Buffalo clings to short passes look for this to continue. Why not play a safety up if the offense is likely to throw a 0-5 yard pass?
Chambers did have a mental meltdown when Hardy ran the wrong route. A defender ran by each side of Chambers and he just stood there. If it hadn’t been a timing pattern Edwards would have been sacked. The one sack was Fine’s fault, not the RBs. The RB had gone out into a pattern. Fine simply watched a DB blow right past him and into Losman. I had wondered aloud yesterday if Fine was even suited up. That’s not the way I wanted to find out…
Any word on McKelvin as a cover guy? You don’t often get to see a CB on TV unless he’s in on the acutal coverage of the pass. I was curious if he was staying with his assigned guys if matched up one on one.
I went to a game once at FedEx field. I sat in the 4th row around the 40 (someone gave my father tickets for a preseason game) and remember being awed when I looked back and up. The stadium seemed more RFKish than the Ralph for some reason. Plus I was close enough to see the cheerleaders without the Jumbotron…that’ll make TV breaks more tolerable…

DB's
Reggie Corner needs work. He got abused. Ashton Youboty showed what the scouts thought of him when he was drafted. Covered well, made tackles. John Wendling,UGH!! Kennard Cox, practice squad. Jabari Greer will be the starter opposite McGee day one. McKelvin, as advertised. Will James, nickle back. Love George Wilson, will be great special teams player.

Was not impressed with Jabari
Am I the only one who thought Jabari Greer didn’t play well?

Jabari
I don’t think all that much of Jabari Greer either. I thought he was lousy last year (it’s great that he can physically stay with receivers, but if he’s too small to stop the completions, what’s the point?) and it’s concerning that he’s still in the starting lineup. I’d like to see McKelvin or Youboty win that job by the end of the preseason. Greer’s an NFL player, but he’s more of a 4th or 5th corner/ special teams type. He’s not talented enough to start on a serious NFL defense. Hopefully, either McKelvin or Youboty will take a huge step over the next few weeks and fill that hole before the games start counting, rather than midway through the season when the damage has already been done.

I agree
I was hoping the plan was to start McKelvin over Greer by Week 1 but we’ll have to see if he’s ready to go right away. I’m going to be watching Youboty all pre-season long. Imagine if after all the grief we’ve given him over the years he somehow wins a starting spot during the year with the greatest cornerback competition? We’ll see if Youboty can keep up his play and McKelvin clearly has the physical tools, as evidenced by his 100+ return yards. Still, I don’t know if Greer is going anywhere without a serious fight, which is what I like about him.

Agree 150%
Thought Greer was pretty awful last year too. Everyone likes his story, talks about the play he made against TO and how he doesn’t back down, but that doesn’t mean he’s a very good CB. He’s average at best, and really bad against the rush.
I respect him and love that he plays so hard, and that he’s a ST whiz as well, but I don’t like him as a starter in our secondary. As a 4th/5th CB in a subpackage and a ST player, I am very happy with his contribution. I just want McKelvin, or even Youboty as you said, to step up and take the job sooner rather than later. Greer got abused enough last year, we don’t need it again.

I keep hearing Greer too small......
Corner… 5-9, 175
McGee.. 5-9, 198
Mckelvin… 5-10, 184
Greer, 5-11, 180
Youboty, 5-11, 189
Would everyone stop this too small stuff????

Greer
If Greer is any bigger than 5’9”, 170 pounds, I need a new TV and that really sucks because I’m still paying off this one.

We know college teams exagerate...
But those stats come from the BB website….

Greer was was 178 pounds and a touch over 5’10’’ at the combine.
And Cinga, at 180 pounds Greer is one of the lightest CBs in the entire league and it shows in his ability to help in run support.

Thanks Cinga, I don’t know what game Poz, Kurupt and Super Fan was watching, but I didn’t see Greer getting beat up on. I think that Greer did an excellent job last year for a 1st time starter. Yes he got destroyed by Randy Moss last year, but what CB didn’t beside the Giants CB’s and that was due in part to their pass rush. He needs to improve on his physicality, but we don’t have to worry about him getting toasted. Reggie Corner didn’t look good at all. And for all of you that says that Greer is Jauron’s boy, he was the third CB off the bench last year and outperformed the two that was inserted before him.

Really?
I thought Greer was very mediocre last season, but was greast last night. Did he allow a single catch? What specifically did you see in the skins game that made you think he didn’t play well???

Things I'd like to see Thursday
1) Plays designed for Evans. Get Lee involved in the offense. Schonert said he was going to move Evans around to get him the ball. I’d like to see that.
2) More Steve Johnson. l don’t know about you guys, but I’ve seen enough of Jenkins, Mayle, Huggins. Play Johnson with the second unit to see what he can bring to the table.
3) A little more pass rush. It was virtually non existent early against Washington. Chris Ellis was noticeable late.
4) No false starts by O-line.

On the contrary, I haven’t seen enough of Jenkins. I like him a lot.
But yes. I’d also like to see more Steve Johnson, at the expense of Mayle.

Jenkins
I’d like to see what Jenkins could do in the slot on a regular basis. Obviously, we haven’t had any real production out of that spot since the first half of 2002 so at tis point, I’d like to see what Jenkins could do there. He seems to have a knack for making plays in the preseason, so maybe he could be utilized in an important role where Buffalo needs serious help…I’d give him a look; he has some talent and he consistently produces in whatever tiny roles Buffalo throws at him- maybe he deserves a longer look.

Agree
Jenkins has some ability. He really impressed me in last year’s preseason finale, and looked good out there last night. I would love to see him get more reps with the first team.
I also want more Steve Johnson. Throw him in with the first and second units as well. The kid has talent and we saw a small flash of that last night. From all indications, he’s looked great during camp, so we really need to see what we’ve got here. I think he’s going to be a solid contributor in the NFL.
I like both these guys and feel they will both make the team, along with 6 CB’s….

What is it about Jenkins you like?
by the Skycap on Aug 10, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The fact that he makes plays when the ball goes his way. I’d like to see the ball go his way more so we can see if that’s an aberration or not.

team depth
is always a concern and injuries can ravage any team…I agree that the Bills lack depth, especially on the O-line and DE positions. However, what concerns me the most is what wins you the most games: QB play and DE’s getting after QB’s. Sure our back 7 is solid, but the game of football is one on the lines and the Bills have tried valiantly to address those issues but without Peters they lack the power to open lanes on that left side. Let’s just hope that no major injuries ravage this team again and that Peters gets into camp in the next 10 days

DE
They need help at the DE position. They need a pass rusher and I hope like hell that the Eagles release Jerome McDougle. The announcers during their game kept saying that he was caught up in a numbers game, but all he did was made plays the entire game.

Have you been watching the other games?
Do not sleep on the Dolphins or Jets!! Dolphins look to have a good running game and the acquisiton of Pennington will make them a great playaction team. As far as the Jets goes Brett Favre will make a name for Cotchery and Clowney. Leon Washington is dangerous out of the backfield and Thomas Jones just plain SUCKS.

yea
I was actually impressed with Chad Henne. His numbers from the game won’t reflect it but I thought he looked good for a rook. I think that for all the flak DJ gets around these parts he’s not the kind of coach to overlook any opponent. I think we’ll be ready to play the Jets and Dolphins and will establish ourselves as the better team.

McCargo
Even though McCargo played well into the third quarter, there did not appear to be anything that he did going against second and third stringers. Did anyone see anything different?

Edwards and Losman
It’s premature to make any definitive conclusions after only one pre-season game. Losman certainly looked better than Edwards in this one. Perhaps Losman performed better because he played with an attitude. You can’t blame him. Sometimes built-up resentments give a person that extra dose of adrenaline…that “I’ll show you” kind of mentality.
