Bills vs Steelers: Open Game Thread
Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills, Aug 14, 2008 7:30 PM EDT

Buffalo Bills (0-1) vs Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0)
Final Score: BUF 24, PIT 21
Bills/Steelers: What to Watch For
Q4 0:00 - Whew! A last-second Hail Mary by Dixon barely falls incomplete, and the Bills hang on for a 24-21 victory. Excellent game thread tonight folks; if you weren't here, you missed out. Much more on this game bright and early tomorrow morning, but some VERY encouraging signs.
Q4 4:31 - Well that was some hideous defense. Steelers third-string QB Dennis Dixon runs a bootleg on fourth and one and takes it 46 yards to the house. This isn't college, Bills third-teamers. Bills 24, Steelers 21.
Q3 1:38 - Directly after the Steelers' score, rookie CB Leodis McKelvin takes the ensuing kickoff... and promptly returns it 95 yards for a touchdown. The kid's got wheels. Bills 24, Steelers 14.
Q3 1:51 - A fumbled punt... well, more a misplayed punt... by Steve Johnson leads to a Steelers touchdown from rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall. Bills 17, Steelers 14.
Q3 9:33 - Buffalo takes the opening kickoff of the second half, and some nice work on the ground - mostly behind Dwayne Wright - gets the Bills into field goal position. Lindell drills it right down the middle; Bills extend their lead to 10, 17-7.
Q2 6:26 - Buffalo's second-unit defense takes the field, and not surprisingly, Pittsburgh's first-team offense torched them. Ashton Youboty and George Wilson get torched on a deep touchdown pass from Big Ben to Santonio Holmes. Bills 14, Steelers 7.
Q2 9:43 - Robert Royal again?! Buffalo's D gets a stop, and Buffalo's offense takes the ball 90 yards for - you guessed it - another Trent Edwards to Robert Royal touchdown pass. You can bet a large sum of money that the starting offense is done for the night after building a 14-0 lead. Great night for Trent Edwards!
Q1 5:03 - Donte Whitner intercepts a tipped Ben Roethlisberger pass on the Steelers' opening drive, and Buffalo's offense actually made them pay! Edwards and the first team drive down the field, and it's capped by an Edwards-to-Robert Royal six yard score. Bills take the early lead, 7-0.
Welcome, fellow Rumblers, to another Open Game Thread for Buffalo Bills pre-season football. Tonight, the Bills hit the field for the second time this pre-season as they play "host" to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game marks the first of an eight-game series to take place over the next five years in Toronto for the Bills; tonight marks the Bills' debut at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, home of baseball's Toronto Blue Jays and the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
This is your one-stop shop for discussions during tonight's game. We'll be breaking down/analyzing events as they happen live, so if you don't yet have one, create an SB Nation account and join us in the comments thread! (Note: we will create a new thread for overflow comments if/when necessary.) Hope to see a bunch of you here for tonight's action!

96.9 just said Estes is out also.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
For those of you who were wondering
The Bills will play having 3 OTs like this tonight (according to 96.9)
1st team – LT – Walker, RT – Chambers
2nd team – LT – Bell, RT – Chambers 1/2 time and Walker the other1/2
3rd team – LT – Bell, RT – Butler
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Good. Let’s hope none of them get hurt. I’m curious to see how Bell looks – a solid performance could seriously earn him a roster spot.

Well, not exactly. Langston Walker should be the starting RT.

Seems to work fine, and I’ve found no “bugs” as of yet….
Oh boy… come on, Will James. That was an ugly completion, because the rest of the defense looked great.

Defense.
Looks good. Pretty Disruptive. I wish our linebackers & DBs would do their part……Run defense so far pretty good. Waiting to see what happens with that draw. I want to see more from the pass defense. Only first seris though…
Sweet pick! Need to see more of that in the regular season!

Yeah… there’s those instincts, Kurupt. Ko jumped that route beautifully, came from directly behind the receiver. :)

Well it was 6-7 seconds into the play
wasn’t exactly a quick read and react play!
I’ll take that though
~K
wow
Donte Whitner made a play, wow. Of course it was off a tip, but I’d take it.
We need that to translate.
Is the Steelers OL that bad, or did I just see Kelsay getting pressure?
~K
The Kelsay pressure came from the rest of the line flushing Ben to Kelsay’s side. Kelsay just overran him and allowed Ben to complete a couple passes.

Krytime
You should have seen Ray Bently when he was playing ILB in Buffalo. He turned eye black into artistry.
Nice to see Royal more a part of the passing attack. The Bills only featured TE’s in one game last year, with good results. Not to say I want them to take over the offense, but it is nice to see them in the mix again.
Get the Bills back to the big game!
That's because the dome is currently open.
So it’s bright there.

THANK YOU CIGNA. I missed the entire 1st Q other than an audio feed. Came here at quarter to see what everyone had to say and got to watch a great drive. Sucks to miss the 1Q but from what I heard and saw all positive. Lynch, Edwards, Evans, ROYAL!!! HA…Royal my surprise cut…good to be wrong.

We need to keep the momentum rolling all game. I wanna see the second and third string outplay them most of the way. Then we can be REALLY happy.

Good God, George Wilson got absolutely torched on that play.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 14, 2008 8:25 PM EDT reply actions
I’d say it was more Wilson. Corners can let receivers run by them in Cover 2, assuming the safety help is there. That’s exactly what he did. Much more blame goes on Wilson in this case.

HAHAHA
That’s so funny because that’s exactly what I was thinking. Me and my mom always called him chicken neck so when I saw that view of his neck, this same thought came to mind. Funny.
Wearing my Bills jersey to the Eagles-Bills game last year in Philly probably wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done. But then again, that's why they call me die-hard.

I still want him to look good because we may need him to be at some point. I just want Trent to look better. We shouldn’t cheer against Losman. It’s not his fault Trent didn’t look great.
Wendling over the top again
Maybe he will block one this year.
Unfortunately it’s kind of a slow process so the kick is off when he gets there….
~K
The announcers had a point, though
When he comes flying over the top, it’s pretty unexpected, and might have startled the kicker a bit.
He has cleared it twice now
and took out the holder on that last one.

Checking the rules:
Rule 12, Section 1, Article 8:
A player may not bat or punch:
a) a loose ball (in field of play) toward opponent’s goal line;
b) a loose ball in any direction if it is in either end zone;
So if he hit it backwards and toward the middle of the field, it’d be fine.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
I also like Derrick Dockery
Schonert seems to have him pulling a lot more this year, or at least a lot more than I remember last year. He’s looked very good doing it, and we’ll need him to do it if Chambers is forced to remain in the lineup….
~K
Just checking in
Just ran to the laptop during half-time. The teams looks much better so far. I am a little disappointed that Hardy hasn’t seen much action. I thought on that first red zone attempt where Edwards missed on a throw the TE that he might instead look towards the left corner for Hardy. Other than that I am very happy right now.
Yeah, he was singled up on that throw. I think that was another poor read for Edwards. Other than that, I think Trent has been darn near perfect.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 14, 2008 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
As much as I love Roscoe’s ability to break tackles, he needs to learn to run up field more and not keep going side-to-side. He has great agility, but I think he might just be a little to confident in his abilities.
1st Half
I saw what I was looking for. Your never gonna see everything but a starting D that makes stops a starting offense that moved the ball. Can’t ask for anything more. Surprise the steelers good offense with lots of talent scored on our 2nd string…that is ok. Maybe not how it happened as it reminded me of a Moss TD but its to be expected. I would have like to see Hardy involved but I’m ok with how it went. I’d have liked to see James, Youboty and McKelvin look better too.
Now we know why Royal scored twice… Schouman hurt his knee.

Not that he’s going to unseat Big Ben, but might be #2 by the end of the year. Not bad for a 5th round draft pick.
Good stuff tonight, jj. Thanks for stopping by.

Just because we're up...
I’d still like to see Baker, Hamdan and the backup WRs get some legit reps. Oh well, minor quibble.
GO BLUE!!!
Great job by the starters today
Hope that continues next week against the Colts where they should get close to the entire first half. NO SETBACKS!!!!!

QB non-controversy
Edwards had a 154.4 QB rating and had a 100% third down conversion percentage (two TDs and his 22-yard run).
Losman had 4 total net yards and had a 25% third down conversion percentage (both of his sacks were on 3rd down!)
all i can say is Pittsburgh couldnt score against the bills first string D and our offense manhandled the steelers d. yea the STEELERS D! im super excited for whats to come.
I hope
you are right. No question there is something to build off.
