FF and why I could hate Eugene Parker more than I do already.

I just finished my first FF draft of the year with the guys I tailgate with.  Thought I’d throw an update of it here for those that have never done a FF league, as well as for those who would like to laugh at my picks..

I drew the number 6 spot (in a ten team league), and it should be pretty easy to tell who I picked first – Mr. Jackson from the Rams.  If that no good, $#%$^#& Parker doesn’t get him into camp  (along with Jason Peters) I’ll, I’ll….…I’ll do nothing but rant more and more about how I hate agents, specifically Parker, who did cost me the services of Emmitt for two weeks back in 93.  For the record, Lynch went number 7.  I may end up regretting the fact that I wasn’t a homer for once.  I thought I was going to get either the first QB (Brady) or the first WR (Moss), but both went before me, as did LT, Peterson, and Westbrook.

I followed this up with a WR–RB–WR run: Wayne, Turner (a bit of a reach), and Evans.  By this time the run on QBs was about to start (Brady, Manning, and Romo were long gone, and Brees and Palmer just got picked), and so I nabbed Big Ben.  I was going to then start to think TE and D/ST, but couldn’t help taking Willie Parker (in case Jackson continues the holdout), and then Roy Williams (who I was very surprised was still there).

I ended up getting the Jax D/STs and Kevin Boss, who was kind of a reach considering what was left on the board.  The rest of the day was left to filling out the roster – Bills, Patrick Crayton, Kenny Watson, and Scheffler.

For the rooks – here’s two pieces of advice.  First, don’t bother taking a K until your last two rounds.  I waited until then and got Dawson and Reed.  And, here’s the most important piece of advice – pay attention to the bye week.  Nothing is worse than realizing you just picked up your back-up QB who indeed has the same bye week as your first QB.  Ha ha.  Jake Delhomme has the same weekend off as does Big Ben, as an FYI to all of you….

Looking back, I’m happy with the day (how many of us aren’t?).  I maybe should have handcuffed Parker with Mendenhall (who wasn’t drafted), but choose to go with the gut feeling that Rudi Johnson may be on his way out in Cincy.  That was a beer influenced decision.

No other Bills were chosen aside from the three I mentioned.  Does that surprise anyone?  Guys who went untouched (aside from Mendenhall) included Russell, Rodgers, Berrian, Campbell, Leinhart, Kevin Jones, and Roddy White.

Jesus

Who DID people in your league draft if guys like Mendenhall and Roddy White weren’t picked and Parker wasn’t picked until the 7th or so round???

You got a steal in Scheffler, I would have definitely picked him where you picked Boss.

Re:Jesus

I’m with you on Mendenhall, but not so much Roddy White. I think people looked at Mendenhall/Parker like Jones-Drew/Taylor; you don’t want to end up with the small piece of the pie. Barber lasted a little longer than I thought too. Everyone seems to think Jones will dictate to Wade that the Arkansas kid plays.

You’d be surprised how fast the top forty RB/WRs went. Real quick. Also, Ryan Gant went higher than I thought he should have.

I hope you’re right on the Scheffler pick; at the time, I thought Boss was safer. Getting the Denver guy made me feel okay about my TEs.

Any comments on the Turner pick? I feel as though he’s the forgotten man. Even though Atlanta is in shambles, I still think he can pull off a thousand yard+ season, and maybe 8 TDs or so.

What about comments on Rudi vs Watson?

Am I the ultimate hypocrite for selecting Evans, considering how I’ve bashed him? For some background info, this will be the third year in a row I’ve have him and Wayne together.

How is Boss and his 6 career starts a safer pick than Scheffler? Boss only caught 9 passes in the six games he started and Scheffler caught 5 TDs in 12 games last season.

Rudi Johnson was terrible last year. He has been on a downward trend for a while now and he added a bunch of muscle during the offseason. He was already a big back to begin with and I would bet he finishes the season in a time share with Watson recieving the bulk of the carries. I would be more worried about the role of Chris Perry, who could take Watson off the field on third downs, than I would worry about Rudi Johnson. I think the the situation ends up being a disaster with Johnson handling short yardage and some change of pace inside runs for about 5-10 rushes per game. Chris Perry is used as the third down back and gets a few carries and pass receptions a game and Kenny Watson gets 10-15 carries and a couple catches a game.

You certainly are not a hypocrite for drafting Lee Evans.

What isn’t completely backwards about Roddy White going undrafted. He caught 82 balls last year for over 1,200 yards and 6 TDs. He did that while the team juggled QBs. Atlanta is going to be bad again so they will be constantly airing it out in the 4th quarter and Roddy White is the big play threat that they will be relying on to try and pull out some come from behind victories. 70 catches for 1,000 yards and 5 TDs seems like a conservative estimate for White.

Scheffler is the safer TE pick, by far.

Jones will get touches in Dallas, but Barber is the undisputed starter/workhorse. He’ll get 20 touches a game and ALL of the redzone carries.

I think Turner is going to be money this year. He’s a great talent and ATL paid him a lot, so expect him to get a ton of touches. ATL will stink again, but Turner should still go well over 1000 yards, though I’m not sure he’ll score a whole lot.

I wouldn’t want any Cincy RB’s. I guess Watson is better because he’s healthy and catches a lot of passes.

I wouldn’t have touched Lee Evans, sorry. I can’t count on him consistently to put up big numbers especially as your #2 WR. I hope for our sake he has a monster year though!!!!

Yeah, Roddy White going undrafted is crazy.

Which WRs got drafted in the later rounds instead of White?

You should really pick him up immediately. You could get a lot more use out of him than you will a second kicker.

by kaisertown on Aug 17, 2008 8:35 PM EDT   0 recs

That's for sure

White’s season last year with Joey Harrington, Byron Sandwich and Chris Redman was pretty much equivalent to Evans’ best season. Having two kickers makes no sense, especially with White available.

Re: "Which WRs got drafted in the later rounds instead of White?"

I have to look that up. Our league isn’t online yet. When it is, I’ll let you know. I’m not bragging on my guys, but a bunch of them did do their homework, much more so than I. This is making me think White “could” be a sleeper?

It’s not exactly a “chicken and the egg” argument, but it does bring up this question – what’s better, a #2 WR on a good team, or a #1 WR on a bad team?

by krytime on Aug 17, 2008 9:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A guy who has 80+ catches and 1200+ yards

should be on someone’s team regardless, especially over a #2 kicker which you can pick up off the scrap heap when needed.

I forgot to mention that I like your Jackson, Wayne, Turner, and Ben picks a lot. That’s a very very good top of your roster. Parker and Roy W. were also great picks for #2/3 RB and WR roles.

Just wondering, was Santonio Holmes available when you picked Evans? Him and Ben would have been great to have together….

80/1200

You are dead on right about that. I think, but I’m not sure, that in this league, you can’t do that though (extra WR, one K). I’m gonna try and bring it up though, and see if I can pull that off.

Holmes was gone. From what I remember, he went higher than I thought. I do expect him to have a very good year though…

White isn’t a sleeper. He is a consensus top 25 fantasy WR. His 83 catches were the 13th most of any WR last season. His 1202 yards were the 8th most amongst WRs. To put it into perspective he had more catches than TO, as many yards as Colston and more TDs than Lee Evans, Dwayne Bowe and Roy Williams. Roddy is a 26 year old, former first round pick, entering his 4th season as a pro. He is on the upswing and last season wasn’t an abberation.

by kaisertown on Aug 17, 2008 10:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Just thought I’d add – had my first fantasy draft this past Friday with some buddies of mine, and hated myself afterwards. Why? Well, just look at my starting QB… feel free to shun me. I’d deserve it.

QB – Brett Favre, Eli Manning
RB – Joseph Addai, Rudi Johnson, Reggie Bush, Thomas Jones, Matt Forte, Tim Hightower
WR – Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Jennings, Santana Moss, Vincent Jackson, Laveranues Coles
TE – Ben Watson
K – Josh Scobee
DEF – Seattle

(12 team league)

by Brian Galliford on Aug 18, 2008 1:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Absolutely not. Favre (10th round) and Coles (14th) were absolute steals. I needed to take Jones as my #4 RB in case my gambles on Rudi and Bush didn’t pay off. I nabbed Eli to take away the nausea of selecting Favre.

YOU TOOK FARVE!!

That is it I’m outta here. Just kidding, it would take more then that for you to get rid of me.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

haha. As long as you felt sick about it, I can’t fault you. That is a very solid team for a 12 team league. As a read through your roster, I was thinking, eh not great, but not bad. Then I saw 12 team league and smiled. That is a very solid team. Great depth. The ability to rotate guys in and out of your lineup depending on matchups can be a very frustrating experience, but it is a great way to win some fantasy matchups.

I might as well throw in my first draft here too. Its a 10 team PPR league that starts 2 QBs, 3 WRs, 2 RBs and a flex WR/RB with some buddies who live out on the west coast. The draft started very late and I was “feeling good” before it even started.

QB – Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Jason Campbell
RB – Frank Gore, Reggie Bush, Earnest Graham, Jonathon Stewart, Selvin Young
WR – Marques Colston, Jerrico Cotchery, Santana Moss, Jerry Porter, Bobby Engram
TE – Todd Heap, Vernon Davis
K – Stephen Gostkowski (with the reasoning that I can enjoy watching the Pats settle for FGs)
Seattle Def

I was pretty happy with it, but it was my first PPR and I totally overdid the RBs as a force of habit. I should of grabbed another WR. If Bobby Engram doesn’t bounce back from injury and have a great season I could be in trouble there. I also do a 10 team, very competitive, lots of money and even more pride on the line, with my very best friends league. Where we start 2 QB, 5 WR, 3 RB, TE, K, D. Its super deep, but that only adds to the competitive nature of the league. Well the whole point of that is for whatever reason QBs are a hug commodity. Usually 2-3 go in the frist round with atleast 2 more going in each of the next 3-4 rounds. I definately was too accustomed to that league and took Manning and Roethlisberger early.

by kaisertown on Aug 18, 2008 2:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Holy crap, when did you pick up Roethlisberger as your backup? If I were you, I’d trade Manning for something shiny, because I think Big Ben is about to have a huge season.

by Brian Galliford on Aug 18, 2008 2:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wait… just read you start two quarterbacks. My bad. Nice stuff, then.

Re: Kaiser

Holy cow; that’s a solid flippin team. I’m jealous on the Colston Cotchery combo. In my draft, I was beaten to the punch on both of those guys. I’ll take some of whatever you had to feel good for tomorrow….

by krytime on Aug 18, 2008 5:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Forgot to mention...

I like the format of your league as well. The only thing I’d change is the 5 WR, and make it a flex spot.

Seahawks players to look for this year

Brandon Coutu is going to be their starting kicker this season. They brought in Mare, but he has been inconsistent, and Coutu banged home 5 field goals during their game against the Bears this weekend. He has hit from 48 yards and in with very good accurracy, and we all know the Big Show will be launching the ball all over the field.

Justin Forsett is the “3rd” back for the Seahawks and rolled up and i am NOT kidding here: 261 all-purpose yards with all 136 yards rushing coming in the second half – Forsett was the key to the offense. He also caught a LOT of balls out of the backfield and looked like a stud playing against the Bears. He played against about half of their starters and all of their backups and schooled them. I think he’ll either be splitting with Jones or replacing him entirely while Duckett continues to be the change of pace back. Jones has been suffering from Fumbilitis recently.

Don’t think of drafting any WRs from the Hawks right now. Your going to end up with a lot of 500-700 yard, 3 TD type of guys right now. Do look into Jeb Putzier and John Carlson as post draft pickups for your team, or if any of the regular TEs are gone. Since the WR corps is shot due to injury, Holmgren has been having Frye and Hasselback throw it alot more to the TEs and RBs to make up for that lack (a real West Coast attack)!

Fear the mighty helmet wearing gopher, he is coming for your soul....

by WABillsfan on Aug 18, 2008 3:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Julius Jones sucks

I’d draft Burlson and have no problem doing so, as a #4 or 5 WR. He’s the #1 there and Hasslebeck will get him the ball as the only proven WR on the team. If he is still returning punts, his value goes up even more.
