Bills holdout Peters making all the wrong moves - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com's Clark Judge lays it all on the line about Jason Peters' holdout. I couldn't find a single opinion of Judge's to contradict. An extraordinary read - one I've attempted to duplicate for a month. Alas, Judge is induplicable. (No, that wasn't a word until Clark Judge invented it.)

Very good article

Judge always seems to write good stuff when the Bills are the subject….

I agree that Peters needs to get there, but I still think both sides are at fault. It should never have to come to this, but it has. The Bills, apparently, have said all they’re going to say until he gets to Buffalo. There is no reason for him not to get there soon in order to start discussions. I don’t see how Parker would disagree with this considering what just transpired w/Jackson. If he shows up and wants to negotiate before practicing, that’s fine. But he needs to get there to do it and both sides need to work to get that to happen, IMO….

disagree K

I still don’t see how both sides are at fault. I agree 100% with the article. How can the Bills have been any clearer? Show up, we’ll negotiate, thats that. Again, I agree with the article and many rumblers who have been saying for some time, the Bills hold all the cards. The play of the Bills O-Line in pass protection (granted its pre-season) hasn’t helped Peters already losing cause one bit. I maintain what I’ve said from the beginning, Peters will show up and play because he has nowhere else to go, he’s under contract for three years. The sooner he stops acting like a baby and negotiates like a man, the better for everyone. He made his point already, which I think he should have, but now show up and negotiate. I am also under the belief that the Bills have been in contact with him to convince him to come back but haven’t been public about it. Its not even like Peters is a running back with a short shelf life like Jackson and must get a huge deal this year or his value will go down. He’s a LT, a position where stars play into their mid thirties, and hes so young. He loses sympathy that I would give to Jackson, who I understand could have his career end at 29 and hes in his prime. Peters just signed a contract and all the Bills are asking is for one more year before inking a new deal, one year in a career that is likely to last ten or more, completely different than a running back. I’ve watched many on this site continue to begin to waver as the season nears because they fear going to an important season without Peters. But the Bills are doing the right thing, the thing myself and many others on this site would do, which is stand firm and watch him collapse because he knows he’s a paper tiger right now.

Good points

agreed on most of them

I just think that both sides are at fault for letting it get this far. I read on BB.com today that there has been NO contact between the sides. I still think the Bills should be reaching out to him. I know they’ve said their piece and stated they won’t negotiate until he gets here, but at some point you have to get in contact with your best OL. Maybe he isn’t returning calls or answering texts from them, I don’t know, but I just feel the FO isn’t as proactive as maybe they should be. But what do I know? Not much at all…

At this point, Peters does need to get there and it’s just weird at this point. I almost wish he was taking this to the media just so we know what’s going on.

I will disagree with you that the OL’s pre-season performance has a negative effect on Peters. I think it has no effect, or even a positive one. We saw Walker get abused and almost allowing Edwards to get his back snapped in half against Pittsburgh. I’m not sold on the run blocking of the starters thus far, as Marshawn is running as hard as ever to get the extra yards. Edwards has had time to throw, but let’s not confuse the OL’s performance with what it would be with Peters.

I just hope all this crap doesn’t effect Peters’ future as a Bill. I want this guy here for the next 10 years, as I"m sure the rest of you do too, so to I just wish the FO could get something done. But you’re all right, Peters need to respond or come out of hiding at some point.

Judge says what I think and feel....no need to say anything else.

Except for when he does show back up to camp…….all will be forgiven and forgotten.

That’s the way it should be, but something tells me many Bills fans will not forget easily….

Signing Bonus

I alluded to this the other day. If he misses a game, I think the Bills need to go after the signing bonus (or at least put it on the table). I like Peters. It’s business and I think the league is hurt by this more than any other league. It’s a real buzz kill that I think needs to be dealt with. I’m not against these guys asking for better deals. I’m not against missing voluntary activities. I am against no consequences for this strategy by players.

A couple of lines caught my eye...

“The Bills made it clear they won’t start talking about an extension until he returns, and they also made it clear 2008 is non-negotiable.”

“What’s more, the club is investigating the possibility of reclaiming part of his signing bonus”

They are both worrisome. The first makes it sound as though Peters essentially isn’t going to be getting a new deal this year. It would seem to contradict at least the spirit of some things that have been said by the front office. Didn’t Brandon state flatly that a new deal was contingent on Peters reporting?

The second quote just seems tanamount to poisoning a well. Why embitter Peters? It’s one thing if he sits out the year because, at that point, it’s pretty clear that he won’t be signing a long term deal with the organization. It’s quite another to turn him upside down and shake him like a 7 year old before he gets into the lunch line….and then ask him to sign an extension.

While I think the front office has been right to stick by the ‘show up if you want a new deal’ mantra that approval is contingent on them actually meaning it. This story left me wondering…

Totally agree. Why go that far when it would just ruin any relationship between the two sides. If the Bills try to get back some of his signing bonus, he almost has to ask for a trade. That would just be stupid on the front office’s part….

In order to ruin a relationship, there has to be one, first. Peters hasn’t talked to the team in eight months.

I don’t think the “2008 is non-negotiable” means that he won’t get a new deal this year; I think it just means that any increases from the new deal would start in 2009. There would probably be a sizable amount of guaranteed money that year, of course, either from roster bonuses, base pay, or whatever. I’m not sure if you can defer a signing bonus…

That’s not unreasonable; the front office does have to put numbers on paper for the year pretty soon, and they can’t just have an indeterminate amount earmarked for “Whenever Peters Shows Up”.

The second quote – yeah, that seems a bit odd. Maybe it’s just spear-rattling to threaten Peters and his agent.

We have Panda, Terror Bear; I’m surprised a nickname for Peters has come up.

This comes from ESPN.com’s Tim Graham a few days ago:

Before my plane left the Buffalo Niagara International Airport tarmac Saturday afternoon, I spotted something spectacular. Buried on the back pages of the Buffalo News was the headline, “Two men claim to have Bigfoot corpse on ice.” “Wow,” I muttered to myself. “Sasquatch is easier to find than Jason Peters.”

I nominate “Sasquatch” (or Bigfoot for the spelling impaired). Jason Peters: the man, the myth, Sasquatch.

"Baby Huey"

is the name that comes to my mind…

Get the Bills back to the big game!

How about “Fat Albert”

Craig.

Fat Halpert, you mean. (Dude, I love The Office.)

I actually vote for Baby Huey. That’s awesome.

Come on now!??!!!

Baby Huey is more suited to Felton, or better yet, Grady Jackson…. Ever seen the original cartoon character???? LOL!!!!
