Jason Peters

I have not posted any entry in awhile but thought this would be a great topic to get back into the mix.

I am so disappointed in a guy that was an undrafted TE, who we turned into a Pro Bowl linemen.  I don't think if he came to camp right now, that he would be ready for the season.

Most of the Bills must be a little be aggravated for him holding out.  This was supposed to be the year we turn things around. Guys like Schobel, Kelsey, Denney, Crowell and Evans who have been here the longest must be really pissed.

Holdouts for guys that deserve money are one thing and I do believe that football players need to get theirs when they can because their careers are not that long.  But Peters' holdout at this point is just selfish.  If this was any other player other than the quarterback, I would say screw him. But the fact that Edwards is in his 2nd year and we are short on depth is a reason to worry.

Bottom line is Peters has wore out his welcome and I hope he sits out the rest of the season and we make the playoffs.  I would even take Peters sitting on his couch and the Bills going 9-7 without him... just to prove a point.

I think I might even hate Jason Peters, whether he comes back or not.  If he comes back, every mistake he makes is going to be scrutinized.

Im out!!!

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Peters

I seem to recall an article about two years ago. In an interview, I remember Peters saying that as a child he was a fanatic Bills fan and that he was so happy to have ended up on a team that he was a life long fan of. I sought of identified with him because of our devotion to the team all our lives. Perhaps it was another player, but I am pretty sure it was Peters. If anyone remembers, let me know.

Mike Schopp (sp?) on WGR said today that Peters has a bonus written into his contract where if he plays 50% of the team’s offensive snaps at left tackle then he gets a 1.25 million dollar bonus. So if it is true it is a bonus he got last year and one that he would easily achieve every year he stays healthy. It really makes his holdout look even more ridiculous if he is actually scheduled to make 4.5 mil this year (including the bonus).

right on HD

as I’ve said before, its not like Peters is a running back with a short shelf life. He’s a LT who can play into his mid 30s, he can wait another year to get a big pay day. Heck, he wasn’t even a difference maker on the squad until recently. What a punk. I’ll love it when he comes back but if I don’t hate him I’ve at least lost a lot of respect for his intelligence. 3 years on your contract buddy, the team says they’ll negotiate when you show up pal, Walker gets injured playing your position jerk!

by poz on Aug 26, 2008 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

The chances of a career ending injury for an OL is not nearly as likely as that of a skilled position player. I do not understand at all how he could not even show up to camp and then negotiate. I have also lost a lot of respect for the guy. I used to root for him for the fact that he was undrafted, converted from TE to RT and then made the transition to the toughest position on the line. He was also a quite guy that let his play speak for itself. Now I feel like he is slapping the Bills organization, his teammates and Bills fans in the face.

My suggestion:
Don’t buy a 5 million dollar house and 5 cars and 4 million dollars a year should be enough to feed your family and give you a little extra spend money. If he can manage that for another year or two, he might have the opportunity to get his 8 mill a year or more.

I am fuming just thinking about it

Woah woah woah lets not be haters

I know we’re all frustrated with Peter’s and his stuborness, but we shouldn’t start hating the guy for it. Re-wind two years ago and remember how woeful our offensive line was. Even though part of the blame could be JP holding onto the ball lets all remember how terrible our pass protection really was at the time. Sure Dockery and Walker helped fix that but realistically having a guy who stepped in at LT whos handled the likes of Seymore, Taylor, and so far almost every RE in the AFC all by himself. Realistically what are our playoff hopes without a stud LT. Look at teams like the Lions who had studs across the board at the skill position but had such an inept offense because of a poor offensive line.

I say its time for the bills front office to stop being stubborn stiffs and pay the man his money. I know they would run the risk of other players thinking they would find sucess in holding out but Jason Peters isn’t some other player. He is by far the best player on our team. Everyone here knows it, even Madden knows it. I could be wrong but I believe he has a 97 overall and if Madden recognizes a Bill as being that good, he’s that good.

My point is is that Peters is way better than any other run of the mill player and he deserves to be paid like a player at his level should be. Sure he’s making more in one year than any of us will make in twenty or thirty years, but its obviously a matter of principle. Jake Long who hasn’t played a singal down yet is slated to make somewhere around 11.5 million this year. If you were the best at what you do what would you think if some newbie who hasn’t proven anything who could turn out to be a total bust was making more than 3 times what you make.

I wish he’d get his butt back here where he’ll probably get paid if he does that. But lets not start hating our teams MVP for it. Do you think any Rams fan will say they hate Steven Jackson, will any Dallas fan say they hate Emmit Smith, will any of my fellow bills fan say they hate Bruce Smith?

Hell no

not haters, loss of respect

I believe Peters has every right to be angry. However, I’ve lost respect, he simply hasn’t acted intelligently in this situation.

or his agent hasn’t acted intelligently, though it’s probably both. Peters is more than likely following the (bad) advice of Parker.

I’m really thinking he’s not here when September rolls around….I hate Eugene Parker here. That ESPN article where the other agents were criticizing his tactics really made me hate him….

that article

just really pissed me off even more. I can’t stand it. What bothers me the most is that now he won’t be prepared to really contribute this season. A rift is now between him, the team and FO. I don’t know how you mend that? How does he overcome it all? How does he learn the new calls, new footwork, new audibles, new plays, new cadences….and be productive?? No way. Season is lost for Peters. It will take him at least 3-5 weeks to really understand and comprehend the new terminology and everything else. So come back Peters, we need you for our stretch run…if you don’t your YELLOW!

by MARVelous on Aug 27, 2008 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not ready to go there yet. I think Peters can still contribute from the get-go if he shows up in the next week. Remember, Walter Jones of the Seahawks made it a habit of skipping the preseason and showing up the Tuesday/Wednesday before week 1 without much issue. I know the new line calls and audibles will be tough, but that’s nothing that can’t be worked extra hard on during the week leading up to the game. If Peters remained in shape, and if he thinks he’s getting a new deal he better have, I don’t think it’s as big an issue as some make it out to be.

Unfortunately, I’m not feeling him showing up anytime soon now…

by Kurupt on Aug 27, 2008 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Point here K

As you noted Walter had a habit of holding out, but here is the MOST important thing. Walter was NEVER learning a new offense that season. The Seahawks have run the same system with some very minor changes all 10 years Holmgren has been coach out here in Seattle. There was no real issue with WJ just showing up to do his job because the changes would be minor to memorize.

Turk thankfuly has tossed most of Stevie Losechilds craptacular offense and replaced, this will take time to learn, no matter who you are.

by WABillsfan on Aug 27, 2008 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

And he did it with Stephen Jackson, too. Just look at what happened to Larry Johnson after he held out last year — he had a terrible season because it took him forever to get back in sync with the rest of his team. That always seems to happen with players at offensive skill positions. Jackson is going to perform far below his skill level this year, but the Rams are going to have to bite the bullet anyway, and if Peters gets his head out of his ass, the Bills are going to end up doing the same.

I just wish Parker could be forced to pay the same $15K/day fine Peters is going to have to cough up, just for being such an idiot.

by rexob on Aug 27, 2008 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Brandon has really blown this.

I totally support Jason Peters in what he is trying to do. I am sure he notices things like Aaron Schobel and Kyle Williams getting big extensions and wonders where the love is for him. And why should he accept being the third highest paid player on the offensive line for 3 more years when his the best performer?
He is quite a good player so why shouldn’t he use his leverage while he has it? He could think that he could hold out this year, and then at worst, get traded and get the big money he deserves next year. He can afford to do that since he already has a few million in the bank.

The Bill’s management may be stubborn, but they aren’t going to punish themselves for three years, just to teach Jason Peters a lesson on who is boss. They will trade him next year, and Buffalo will continue its streak of missing the playoffs.

People say that Peters has to report since the Bill’s management holds all of the cards. That is not true at all. The Bills performance on the field will suffer and I fear that Trent Edwards will take a lot of hits that he would not take if Peters was there. So the Bills will have another bad year, but Brandon will have shown he is a man of strong principles (with a losing team).

BTW, I hope everyone know that NFL contracts are pretty one sided. That is the point that Urlacher was making in Chicago when he demanded and got his contract rewritten.

by mikeh on Aug 26, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

Huh?

How could Peters possibly feel he hasn’t gotten love from the organization? They gave him a fairly lucrative deal when he was an up-and-coming player. All of a sudden he makes the Pro Bowl and he’s a hold-out? The thing that makes this a bunch of horse manure is that he’s not the only Bills’ star who wants a new contract, but they’re all showing up and making progress with their deals. Angelo Crowell signed an extension and didn’t come back the next season asking for a new contract. Lee Evans is currently fine-tuning his new deal.

All of that said, it’s stupid to “hate” Jason Peters. As far as I’m concerned he’s injured, and now somebody has to step up. And so far, Kirk Chambers has been solid.

"I don't agree with a damn thing you say, but I would die for your right to say it."

by ForeignArrow on Aug 26, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

wow i dont agree with you at all

Peters got his love 2 years with the 15million he didnt earn yet. The contract was set up well. Escalators for position played (LT vs RT), snaps %, and workout bonuses. He is being selfish.

All the players you named above showed up to training camp!!!!!! The bills even admitted they would rework his deal……IF he showed up!!!!!!

What about players like Evans and Crowell who have played out their orignal deals. (I think crowell may have gotten a similar contract bump a few years ago, anyone comfirm that?)

The bills spent alot of money to bring players in this year and have Evans contract to finish. He is only thinking of himself and not the team

Would you rather win one superbowl or Lose four in a row? Which defines your teams place in history more ... 1yr wonder or Perennially 2nd best?

I'm posting late.......

But I woke up around 5:30 Tuesday morning and I had this feeling that everything with Jason Peters was going to be OK(am I football freak for coming to this thought first thing in the morning?). I have a feeling when he does eventually come to terms with Buffalo, we will be that much more solid as a team. Look on the bright side everybody, Chambers and Bell have gotten/are getting more reps, if and when, we need them down the road. Yes, that’s me being optismistic, Mr. Galliford. : )

Bills aren't dumb.

Stubborn but not dumb.

This is a business. And money Talks. Pro Bowl players ought to be paid accordingly. I wonder if the Bills weren’t Playoff contenders this year would all of you side with Peters.

We want this team to succeed so bad that were already preparing to target specific people for not marching to a certain tone. You guys are the ones being selfish. Not Peters

An undrafted Free Agent….he’d probaly never thought he’d make it this far. He’s worked hard to get to this point. And his Contract is a joke. Don’t give me loyalty. He could requested a trade, he could of did a lot more to further add turmoil. All he did was listen to his ass of an agent and keep his mouth shut. He’s been loyal.

Loyalty is a joke…Because when they used him up..the Bills’ll get rid of him for the next young buck.

so he better get it while he can now.

Yeah he better get his self to practice. But its time for the Bills to pay up.

Peace!

maybe they'll get rid of him when he's used up

but they’ll make him a rich man before they do. The bills wanting to wait to see how he recovered from hernia surgery and trying to get one more year from him before spending dozens upon dozens of millions of dollars is practical and normal

I wonder.....

What would happen if I stopped going to work, didn’t even bother talking to my bosses and tell why I stopped coming in….I mean, I got alot of kudo’s for the last contract I worked on, and even got them a new beefy government contract w/ the USDA….

I’ve been guaranteed a raise in Nov for my performance so far…even though I feel I deserve it now…

Do you guys think if I don’t show up for work tomorrow and the day after, and so forth…I should get my raise early any wayz right?

I would be in the right in doing so correct?

Tell them you have another job offer for more money. If they really need you and you are hard to replace, you can bet that they will offer you more money now or even better, you will tell them what your new price is – forget about the waiting until November.

I did that on a contract job a few years back. It worked out well for everyone.

by mikeh on Aug 28, 2008 3:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, that doesn’t exactly work in the NFL. Peters can tell the front office that he got an offer for $14 million a year from Miami… and they can laugh in his face. He signed a contract. He’s a Bill for the next three years. You can’t leverage salaries like that in the NFL, because the choice for Peters (contractually) is play or quit football.

by Brian Galliford on Aug 28, 2008 6:45 AM EDT up reply actions

“You can’t leverage salaries like that in the NFL, because the choice for Peters (contractually) is play or quit football.”

Everyone knows that is really not the choice Peter’s faces. Do you really think the Bill’s are going to keep Peters out of football for 3 years just to teach him a lesson as a matter of principle on the sanctity of an NFL contract. You don’t think they would trade him to get some value?

The Bill’s are being stupid this year and will pay the price of not making the playoffs but I think their own self interest will dictate that they get some value for Peters after the season. Peters will then be a happy man, and financially he will be far ahead of where he would have been if he had played out his current contract with the Bills.

The Bills, of course, have done such a good job of drafting and developing offensive linemen over the years, that they should be able to easily replace Peters (ha ha).

by mikeh on Aug 28, 2008 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I don’t think the Bills will hold him out of football for 3 years – if he sits the year out (which I still doubt he will do), I think they’ll trade him next off-season. There’s a very large difference between trading Peters now and trading him next off-season, and I don’t think it will come to the latter.

Your vendetta against the Bills’ front office intrigues me because there isn’t an NFL front office that would do it any other way. You can’t bring up previous holdouts that got new contracts – they don’t apply to this case, because Peters has carved out his own highly unique (read: DUMB) renegotiation strategy. All 31 other NFL teams would be doing exactly what the Bills are doing, i.e. all they can. Would you have a problem with their decisions too?

Your opinions sound like they’re bred from desperation. Yes, the Bills desperately need Peters. But you don’t mortgage the future for the guy when all of his actions for the past 9 months very clearly indicate he’s more interested in himself than in the team. That’s a bad business strategy – and anyone who employed the opposite at the NFL level would be fired instantly. You don’t cave into the player in this situation; if you do, you’re doing business the wrong way. It’s really as simple as that.

by Brian Galliford on Aug 28, 2008 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Question?

If he does not show up for this year is his contract pushed back another year? Do the Bills own him for only three years wheather he plays or not, or is it three years of playing?

As I understand

as long as he shows up by week 10 he gets credit for the season, but if he doesn’t show up he still has three “football” years left.

So

he doesn’t do himself any good by staying out, we still own him for three years.
