NFL Network Bills' Preseason Schedule
For those of us who don't live in the Buffalo area our only hope of catching the preseason action is NFL Network. (Happily, the NFL Sunday Ticket allows non-Western NY Bills fans to see all of the games in real time.) I think the schedule of games is a bit quirky. The Bills play on the 9th, 14th, 24th and 28th. I don't think I like the 5 and 4 day gaps between the first two and last two games...
NFL Network schedule (all games MST, because that's where I live)
9th Skins game 5 pm MST
14th Steelers game 10 pm
24th Colts game 6 pm
29th Lions game 3 pm (game played on the 28th but broadcast on 29th)
Editor's Note, by Brian Galliford: Thanks, Ron, for the useful information (even though I'm in WNY). Just a general pre-season FYI for folks, as well - we'll have open game threads for each pre-season game in which you can blog live while the action is going on. I also have access to DVR this season, so I'll be watching live (like the rest of you) AND doing some film session reviews in the days after each game. So all that info you're looking for on C.J. Hawthorne? Buffalo Rumblings will have you covered. End Note

For those of you who suck at time conversion:
9th Skins game 7 pm – Live – Isn’t this one game going to be covered (and aired) by local guys?
14th Steelers game 12 pm
24th Colts game 8 pm – Live – Is the NFL Network going to be doing the analysis?
29th Lions game 5 pm
Ron, the gap between the last two games doesn’t concern me because the 3rd game is where your starters and primary backups play almost the whole thing and then nobody plays in the 4th game while the scrubs battle for practice squad spots. I do get what you mean about the schedule being a little strange and certainly not advantageous for the Bills this preseason though.

FYI
If you get Fox Sports Pittsburgh, the Bills/Steelers game is supposed to be shown live…Ch. 659 on Directv I believe….not sure if it’ll be blacked out though….

Bills preseason games taped delayed?
Does anyone know if the preseason games will be shown live in Rochester?

I get so screwed with my geographic location. My only option for cable is Time Warner Cable, who is a staring contest with the NFL network, so I don’t get it, plus I’m so close to NYC that all I get is Jets and Giants garbage through my normal cable. My landlord doesn’t want me to Direct T.V. because he doesn’t want me to put up the dish, no matter how much I tell him how small it is.
Man this sucks.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Go DirecTV
I did years ago specifically for the Sunday Ticket. I think the NFL Network is on the base package. When I was renting an apartment my landlord said that I couldn’t drill into the building to mount the dish. I bought a heavyweight tripod (about $40) and lashed the legs to three cinderblocks. It worked like a charm. Next thing I knew the south side of the apartment complex was filled with dishes on tripods.

What is the actual month cost for DirectTV
I have heard their are a lot of hidden costs. Also, I am worried that the signal would not be good in the winter in northern climates.

About $60 per month
My total bill during football season is a little over $100, with $40 of that being for the Sunday Ticket. There really aren’t a lot of fees. My bill (I just got it today.) has 4 lines—Total Choice Plus ($55), Sunday Ticket ($42), 2nd receiver ($5), and New Mexico tax ($5).
I can count the number of times I’ve had weather related issues over the past 5 years on one hand. Of course, I live in the high desert not far from the Texas and Mexican borders. Weather is something that happens in other places. On those rare occasions when we’ve had really thick cloud cover I’ve lost reception for short periods—generally less than 10 minutes. Again, this part of the world has 350ish days of sunshine per year so while signal loss is a rarity here could be a real problem in a place like Buffalo. Check with friends in your area before taking the plunge.

That's cheap
I have HD and DVR so it’s a little pricier. No matter what, it’s worth it getting to see the Bills from the comforts of my own home.

HD
I keep thinking of adding it and then back off. They brought it out once but didn’t let me know I’d need an HD cable or that there would be blue lines (I have a wide screen TV) on the sides of non-HD channels.

hmmmm
I assume your widescreen is an HDTV, so I will proceed with that notion….
Most of the Directv channels are in HD now, at least all the ones I watch. Only Comedy Central seems to be lagging. Plus for the non-HD ones, you can choose how you want those channels viewed, by pressing a button on the remote: Pillar Box (Black boxes on side), Stretch, or normal non-HD to fit the screen.
You do need an HDMI cable, but you can get a cheap one for like $5 on Amazon. That’s what I did, and I don’t even remember if I needed it or not. I’ll have to look when I get home later, I may have used it to hook up my upconverting DVD player instead….
There’s nothing better than HD TV Ron. Surprised you haven’t jumped aboard yet. I can’t watch the NFL, college bball, baseball or any other sport in standard definition anymore. There is nothing better than HD Sports, other than having seats up close and personal at the games….

Ditto on DirecTV
Like sireric, I live in the NYC area and I am forced to watch the Jets and Giants each week. At least we get to see the Bills on local TV twice a year courtesy of the Jets. When I lived in Manhattan, I successfully ran for President of my co-op so I could approve my dish installation. In those days you could do the installation yourself. When we moved to NJ, we lived in a townhouse for a year and had the same problem as sireric. Eventually, we convinced the owner that it would be a selling point for prospective tenants, but had to go through the homeowners association, which took months. Desperate to see my hometown team, I mounted the dish on a stand I fabricated from 2×4’s and placed it in front of a window facing Southwest. It took a few adjustments, but I was able to get a signal…even through a screen. The window had to be open, but the signal quality was decent. Halfway through the season the association approved the dish, but the indoor trick was a great stopgap. Prior to my purchasing DirecTV in the early ‘90’s I would just go to a NYC area Bills bar to see the game. I can’t get the HD service from DirecTV, so I have digital cable and DirecTV only during the football months. They don’t advertise it but DirecTV allows you to suspend your service when you don’t need it.
