Jets now front-runner for Favre
After recently buying Bills tickets to the game at the Jets this December I was expecting to see the Bills defense pick apart Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens. Now, it seems I may be getting more than I bargained for as the recent spate of Brett Favre news is saying the Jets have become the front-runner in a trade for the Hall of Famer because they are offering a better deal than the Buccaneers. I know we've discussed this before but this is coming down to the last 24 hour cycle before a Favre trade is expected (as he needs to be at training camp this week). How much more of a contender can we expect the Jets to be if they do indeed pick up Brett and is our secondary, in my opinion the weakest link in our defense, up to the challenge of stopping him and the not so bad Jets receivers.
Here is a snippet from rotoworld.com regarding the potential deal:
According to his agent, Brett Favre is willing to play for both the Jets and the Buccaneers. Favre appears resigned to a trade and hopes one is completed by Thursday, so he can get into training camp with his new team. His agent said that he could not see a scenario that involved Favre not playing football this season. The Jets may now be the frontrunners if they are truly offering a much better package, although we're sure that Favre will have a voice in the final decision.
It seems to me that even if the Bucs did win the Favre deal, that would probably end up sending Garcia to the Jets anyway.

Favre
He won’t have the same weapons in NY and I still think he’s pretty much washed up. Last year was a fluke to me after watching his play go downhill for years. Let’s hope he picks up on the forced INT when he gets to NY again.

Washed up?
The guy carried his team to the NFC championship game. Granted, he made a Losman-like decision that cost Green Bay the game but calling him washed up is more than a stretch. With either Pennington or Clemens there’s a decent chance the Bills sweep that series. With Favre in New Jersey splitting those games is as good as Buffalo can expect.

the nod to jersey
I like how you referred to Favre as being in New Jersey. Haha. I love it.

He's not washed up
Having lived in Wisconsin for several years until January and seen more Packers games than Bills games in that time, I can assure you that Favre isn’t washed up. That said, unless the Jets’ line, receivers, and running backs have all improved by miraculous proportions in the offseason, the Jets are still a .500 team at best with him at QB.

Update
Rotoworld update
“The agent for Brett Favre says a resolution involving his client and a trade is close.
“It looks like it’s going to be New York or Tampa Bay,” said agent Bus Cook. “We’re waiting to find out and we could learn in the next hour or so.” The Jets are reportedly offering the most compensation, while the Bucs are probably Favre’s preferred destination. Stay tuned.”
Looks like we’ll know by the end of the day.

I love the new york yankees, but this offseason for the jets has sown me that you cant build a franchise by throwing money at your problems. They signed a bunch of washed up, overpriced free agents. Then they try to go get an elderly quaterback at the expense of their player development. this is going to turn out just like roger clemens all over again for them

Depends on Faneca
If he is his usual dominant self the Jets could find themselves with a very good left side of their offensive line.

If I'm Favre
I would be definitely leaning toward signing with the Bucs instead. Warmer weather (important when you start feeling your age), easier schedule (because of the NFC being the weaker conference).
Get the Bills back to the big game!

Yeah, but he actually said he wanted a cold-weather team at one point… Though that could have been a veiled reference to the Bears/Vikings.

Of course, the Vikings aren't a cold-weather team
No team that plays in a dome should be allowed to call itself a cold-weather team.

Spare QB available?
So, wherever Favre goes, there should be an extra QB ending up getting released. Any the Bills would be interested in signing as a 3rd QB and/or eventual replacement for Losman next year?
I was hoping he’d stay in Green Bay, and they’d have to cut Matt Flynn – that would be a decent free agent pickup.
In New York, it’d be Pennington probably that gets cut, I think.
In Tampa, who knows? They have Griese, Garcia, Simms, Josh Johnson, and Luke McCown. Together, the four veterans have 205 starts – almost as many as Favre’s 253 (with more losses!) Tampa probably will try to trade one away, but I doubt it will go well; everyone knows they have to cut 3 anyway.

Tampa could probably successfully trade Garcia away (albeit for next to nothing, maye a 6th rounder). Chris Simms was a lock to get cut anyway, Brian Griese was also probably going to get cut anyway too. They will end up with Favre, McCown and Johnson.

I'd take Pennigton
He is a perfect back up QB, especially for Trent. Yes, he actually does have a noodle arm, unlike Trent who chooses to throw it shorter more often…but he is a smart game manager who would excel on a talented team and not in New Jersey

I agree on Pennington. I’ve seen him play enough to know he’s better then people give him credit for.
Farve is an upgrade but for some reason hearing that Farve could be playing for the Jets doesn’t scare me at all.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Sure you right
Favre, while still one of my favorite players of all time, does not scare me in a Jets uniform, or even in a Packers or Bucs uniform for that matter. HE alone does not beat the Bills no matter what.
Pennington—has given us problems even on mediocre to bad Jet teams. He is a gamer and smart, but has coe up on the wrong end f the injury stick too many times.
