Bills at Redskins: Open Game Thread
Buffalo Bills at Washington Redskins, Aug 9, 2008 7:00 PM EDT
Final Score: Redskins 17, Bills 14
Hogs Haven Interview :: What to Watch For
Q4, 0:00: That's all she wrote. Turnovers and poor run defense on Buffalo's third-teamers' part kept the score consistent throughout much of the second half. 'Skins win the pre-seaso opener by 3. First impressions coming up tomorrow morning; Film Session early this week (definitely before the Steelers game). Thanks to everyone who joined us for this game thread!
Q3, 10:59: Dwayne Wright fumbles the ball; Washington's recovery leads to a 45-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham. Redskins re-take the lead, 17-14.
Q2, 1:11: An Ashton Youboty interception on Todd Collins sets up Buffalo's first touchdown of the pre-season, a touchdown reception for rookie WR James Hardy from J.P. Losman. Two-point conversion is good (Losman to Justin Jenkins), and we've got ourselves a tied ballgame.
Q2, 3:02: J.P. Losman drives the Bills down the field - utilizing Fred Jackson very nicely out of the backfield as a receiver - but once again, the drive stalls deep and they settle for a short Lindell field goal. Buffalo's scored on five straight field goals dating back to last season's Philly finale.
Q2, 9:49: Led by Todd Collins, the Redskins' offense continues to shred a Bills defense sporting a lot of key players. Ladell Betts takes the screen pass to the house; Redskins 14, Bills 3.
Q1, 0:45: Washington has responded with a 53-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Clinton Portis. Buffalo's top defensive unit (sans A. Schobel, M. Stroud, T. McGee) was shredded by Jason Campbell and some timely draw plays. Redskins 7, Bills 3.
Q1, 11:28: Washington fumbles the opening kickoff, and it's recovered by Rian Lindell. Bills drive stalls in the red zone, but Lindell nails a short field goal to give the Bills an early lead. (Pass protection for Edwards looks OK; run blocking, not so much.)
Welcome to the official pre-season kickoff of the 2008 Buffalo Bills season! This is your open game thread for tonight's matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins. Tonight, we'll get our first look at a re-tooled Bills roster - sans Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters - in a live setting for the first time.
This is your one-stop shop for discussions during tonight's game. We'll be breaking down/analyzing events as they happen live, so if you don't yet have one, create an SB Nation account and join us in the comments thread! (Note: we will create a new thread for overflow comments if/when necessary.)
Bills inactives: WR Josh Reed, OT Jason Peters, DE Copeland Bryan, LB Angelo Crowell, SS Donte Whitner

Just got in....
Whew!!! Been helpin’ someone move, got in just in time, got the DVR set, cracked a cold one, and I’m ready for some Bills Football!!!!
NFL Network
They usually alternate the feed after halftime and we’ll get the Bills broadcast then. The NFL Network is not covering the game (they are for the Colts preseason tilt in two weeks); they’re just broadcasting the local broadcast feeds.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Yeah, Brownie reported that earlier today. Roscoe’s been on the field a few times already too…

Super Bowl XLIII
Seahawks (-5) Bills
Tease the Bills up to plus 11 and take the under.

James
I was watching James cover Randle El in the slot on the first 3rd down and he was all over him. I think I’m buying this signing more and more as his size is an asset.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Liked the looks of him too. We saw five corners on that possession… pretty cool.

The completions will come. I’m worried about the O-Line penalties. Oh where, oh where is Jason Peters…

Hardy
Hardy’s a monster. He always looked like a man amongst boys in college, but I didn’t know if it would translate to the pros, but he still looks like a beast physically. He relied so much on his advantage in athleticism in college that i think he’s going to take awhile to learn how to beat his opponents traditionally with timing running better routes.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
First he needs to know which route he’s running. He and Edwards weren’t in the same offensive scheme on that throw in the red zone…
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions
didn't look fluent...
on 3rd down on the last drive either. He really looks like he wants to rely on just being stronger than everyone else.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Boy… Buffalo may have beefed up their run defense, but Jason Campbell (with a little help from the draw play) is shredding them.
Let's wait
for review… I’m havin’ a hard time with only one hold call against the Skins so far…. Watching some of our d literally spun around by o linemen
Ellison
Keith Ellison has made plays against the 1st team. Don’t write him off yet. He can be useful in certain packages.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Be wary of ScroogeTV, which some people have been using to watch the game. It made me download something to watch the game today (it didnt yesterday) and even though I uninstalled it, it is still causing all my google searches to be flagged as botspam. So something is not quite right there.
But the short version of this story is, more updates here please!

One series for Edwards?
Really wish we would play the starters more throughout the team. We always seem so unprepared when the season starts.
It was actually two series for Edwards. 1 for Lynch.

3rd down defense
On that last 3rd down they had Spencer Johnson and Denney on the ends and they got no pressure whatsoever. I HATE Bill Kollar’s favorite technique of rushing from three yards outside the pocket in a circular route to the QB…Great- the Sunday Night game against New England* is back in my head now.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
You don’t think the lack of pressure had more to do with the players? Because I do. Johnson and Jason Jefferson are playing a lot of end right now.

Laptop's bout to die
Go Bills. I’m not impressed, but it’s still good seeing them out there…can’t wait for September…Brian, I don’t think Bruce Smith and Reggie White on the ends could get to the QB with the rushing technique the Bills use on some of their 3rd and long plays. That’s more on Kollar/Fewell. Take it easy, all- better times ahead.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Something in the water tonight. I have 3 computers, and 2 have picked tonight to die on me. Im on the 3rd, and its infected with some crap spyware that I got trying to get a stream of the game.
Can't help now....
But check back before season starts… Won’t “post” it, but found a couple places that may help then…
Well that first quarter looked just like last season
Inept offense, with a lot of confusion
Defense that couldn’t get off the field on 3rd downs
No pass rush
Gift turnover that only results in 3
Poor tackling
Yikes! I knew it would be a bit of a struggle, but I didn’t expect it to be a carbon copy of last year. We need to see gradual improvement over the next 3 games, or week 1 could be ugly.
We need Jason Peters SO BADLY. That first series was a good example. Run game wasn’t great, penalty on Chambers, etc…
~K
I was a little surprised that the pass blocking was better than the run blocking…
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Eh
Not sure the Redskins were doing stunts or anything. I did see Walker neutralize Jason Taylor on one rush though.
I did NOT like the pre snap movement nor the useless short passes (to Schouman for one)....
Good throw to Roscoe though
~K
Concurred on the pre-snap movement. I really don’t see the benefit of that, especially when you have wideouts jumping offsides.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn't think it would be a problem
and it still might not be. It will take time to get it all down though, and that’s what I’d worry about. With Hardy still learning, he’s bound to be confused more often than not.
~K
Yeah, apparently you did. I was confused for a few minutes there. :)

McKelvin looked good on that return. Nice speed and acceleration. Not sure about his vision yet though….
~K
I want to see him get a punt. Too bad Buffalo’s defense has been so terrible.

Good old JP
Throwing long passes off his back foot for a completion. Some things never change. Roscoe is going to be great for us this year if used properly….
~K
Heck...
I’ve been sorta impressed with his reads so far, and willingness to dump it off short… Like we expected out of Trent…
Second-team defense. Don’t get too excited. That slant to Parrish on third and goal was a terrible throw.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
THat wasn't a terrible throw
a bit high, but catchable. It would have been much better had he hit him in the chest though….
~K
You have to give your receiver options with the throw, especially when it’s Parrish, and especially when there’s that much real estate involved. A low throw there is a touchdown, but as usual, Losman’s accuracy is spotty in hard short throws.

EDIT: :Yup, haha. I didn’t realize I hadn’t fast forwarded all the way yet…..
~K
jackson looks good and so does roscoe. hardy has honestly been making me angry. i hope he playes better later on as we get deeper into the preseason. james looks good. possibly the only thing other than poz about or d. i wish that edwards played a little longer… i missed everything that he did. all 5 passes i mean. Oh and Marshawn looked beast. i only saw one run wit him and the whole team had to take him down and he still wouldnt go. beast.
Defense just horrible tonight
It seems Jefferson is getting a lot of snaps. Protecting Stroud maybe?
Definitely the case. Stroud was out after the first series, but the Bills maintained their four-man rotation. So it’s Williams/McCargo/Johnson/Jefferson.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Especially with how quickly Youboty was into the game (for McGee). He’s looked solid. I’d like to see him inside…

Did McGee play?
I thought I saw Youboty almost immediately though.
Corner was in on the first series too….

~K
Great catch, even though Theisman whined about pushing off
I don’t think he did but I’ll have to see it again.
He didn’t. All he did was get his arms in position to catch. Theismann is an idiot.

Theisman whining about pushing off
Yes, Cinga….you can follow the game on NFL.com if you don’t have NFL network
It was really ugly
You could see his lower leg develop an extra joint…..Taylor, when later interviewed by Theisman and asked a stupid question responded by yelling, “I broke you, man!”
That was my attempt at a joke. Apparently, I need more beer.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I had totally forgotten
how much I HATE him and Mike Patrick.
They are so stupid and clueless. On a deep fade to James Thrash early in the game, when Youboty had perfect coverage, they were blaming Thrash for the throw being 10 yards out of bounds. They tried saying that he needs to give the QB a better target, blah blah blah. Such morons. One of the smartest things ESPN has ever done….
~K
It won't matter
Edwards is a short throw ball control Dick Jauron type of QB. Losman walked onto the field and promptly went deep. You won’t get far in your job if you don’t do it the way the boss wants it done.
Pretty typical of the pre-season when you have a competent backup.

Mine’s running all right. I’ll definitely let you know.
Also, there’s a lovely t-storm brewing in my neighborhood. If I suddenly disappear, you know why: I’ve lost power. Aside from the fact that I’d be real, real upset if that happens… K, would you mind taking up the reins if that happens?

We already lost cable/Internet for about a minute, and the storm hadn’t even hit yet. It’s raging in full force now; this house is very fickle when it comes to storms and power.

First half all-stars
Youboty
Parrish
Losman
Special Teams?
If Youboty keeps playing this well, I can’t see him getting cut. He’s really working hard and trying to prove his worth. I love it….
~K
No stars for the defense as a whole
So far they’ve given up about 150 yards through the air and about 60 yards on the ground. Ugh.
Take that ”?” off of Special Teams. Their coverage has been lights out.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Lindell
His kickoffs have been deeper than usual and he had the good sense to remember that he was a kicker and just flop on that fumble at the beginning of the game.
I do agree about Youboty, though
He’s having a pretty good game. I thought I saw him get beat on a couple of passes early but fairly solid otherwise…
Yes
but he was also 10 yards off the ball. I absolutely HATE when CB’s are played that far off the ball. Quick passes and slants are so easy to complete against that. 2 years ago when we still had Clements, we were getting creamed by having him and McGee 10 yards off the ball on every play. Midway through the year, they were moved into more bump and run coverage and the pass D really improved.
~K
NFL Network, you jerk!
The 2nd half is about to start and we still have Theismann/Patrick. Where is Steve Tasker and Co.????
~K
Maybe now when the Bills get a 30 yard gainer they won’t just interview Redskins and later mention that, by the way, Buffalo had a 30 yard pass completion. Maybe we’ll even get to see a replay of it!
I’ve got Steve Tasker, Kurupt. You have my sympathies…
Third on the line, fourth overall (Hardy).

He’s fumbled a LOT of footballs on the practice field. Remember his fumble last season in the blowout at New England? Believe me when I say it’s a tendency.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Dwayne Wright stinks
I was going to comment that he looked pretty decent, but the guy can NEVER hold onto the ball. All last preseason, and I’ve seen some highlights of him in this camp with fumblitis. I just can’t see how this guy can be relied on….
~K
Wow, that was a commercial tinged with homosexuality
Football players and folk music just don’t belong together…
It was a commercial with Jewel-like singing
And football players wandering through nature scenes….very weird
They show it on NFL Network all the time
could be every commercial break.
I like that they have guys like Laurence Maroney leading their respective teams, haha.
~K
If Tiki Barber could be taught not to fumble anymore...
.... (though there was no hope of curing him of his whininess) why can’t they teach Wright to hold onto the ball?
Wendling just looks horribly awkward trying to do anything defensively. He’s a specialist, and that’s where his contributions end.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah
I am not sure I can see him ever contributing defensively. Heck of an athlete, not so sure about defensive football player….

You’re now in charge of talking crap about Trent Edwards for the rest of the season. Go.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions
There will be plenty of time for that
but if he plays as crappy as he did tonight, we’re dead. He seems to love having passes tipped, anybody else notice that? I remember that last year too.
~K
He’s got a quick release, but Ive always thought his release point was a touch low.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions
He looks OK. He’d be real flustered if there was a pass rush.

The "back-up" TE's haven't looked too bad
Fine and Anderson making some plays.
I’m still surprised Schoumann started over Royal….
~K
He played some as well. I think you’re right; he’s the opening day starter. Schouman didn’t look great.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes he was. He dropped a pass from Edwards on a quick out. He was also double-covered on one play; Edwards tried to force it and was nearly picked.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions
For those of you that have been to camp practices
Has Steve Johnson been getting reps behind guys like Huggins and Mayle? He’s been behind them today, only coming in for 3-WR sets.
~K
They mix him in a lot. Generally he runs with, not behind, them.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions
And here I thought he was getting some first team reps this week
maybe he was…..
I still like him more than any of those other guys, a lot more. He’s got very good potential….
~K
S. Johnson
I hope he is a keeper. I am soooo tired of Josh Reed. he couldnt play on another NFL team. when you play the slot, ya gotta be big or fast and he is niether. I remember 2 years ago , they were gonna cut him.
Lindell shanked that field goal pretty good. Curious to know who the snapper was… that was a poor snap.
Still
after 2 pretty darn good seasons, I will never have confidence in Lindell. I don’t know what it is about him, but I can’t trust him out there….
~K
I have confidence in him. He’ll tie this game tonight if he gets the chance.

Re-charged laptop battery, I take it?
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah- no backup battery
here’s my roster question after watching this game- is it possible that the Bills could keep Corner on the practice squad without some other team stealing him? I think Youboty has a future in this league and six corners seems excessive, but 4th rounders rarely get cut.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
I don’t see that happening. Six corners or cut Youboty; I think Corner stays no matter what.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
I've wondered the same thing
he has been good and bad tonight, but has played pretty well in camp thus far from all indications.
I’d hate to cut either guy, but if the staff feels Corner has a real shot as the PS, that may be the way to go. I’d still go with 6 CB’s though. Corner can be inactive each week without a problem. Youboty just looks more game-ready and able to play in week 1. With McKelvin still learning, I’d much rather have Youboty available….
~K
practice squad
Do teams have the ability to activate a practice suadder BEFORE another teams signs him to the active roster? I distinctly remember the Lions trying to sign Jay Riemersma off the Bills practice squad in ‘96 and the Bills activated him before they lostb him…I certainly think Youboty is a valuable player and I buy his hard luck story to start his career- I know this will never happen, but if I was to cut any of them, I’d cut Greer- I think he’s the least valuable long term.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Hmmm
I have no idea. I would hope that if a guy is on one team’s PS, they would have the option to sign him ahead of another team, but I truly have no clue. I know if another team wants to sign someone off another teams’ PS, they have to sign that guy to their active roster for the remainder of the season, so that is somewhat of an impetus.
Greer does have the least long term value, along with James. Greer is probably not a Bill in 2009, IMO, no matter how well he plays this year. I think McGee is a much better player, and with guys like McKelvin, Corner and/or Youboty all coming along, who knows if he’ll be necessary then…
~K
Had to go...
for a minute… A prospective sister in law, just cheered for the Skins on that fumble… My bro and I took care of that “problem” real quick… She’s noe sitting in yard, waiting for the game to end…...
McKelvin has been in pretty much the entire game
Special teams and defense…..he’s getting a lot of snaps. Maybe the coaches are trying to get him ready to take the #3 or even #2 slot sooner than we think?
My guess is that they’re just getting him reps to catch him up.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I would imagine
kid needs all the reps he can get. He isn’t going to get those standing on the sidelines….
~K
He's a pretty smart player too
I love the guys who try ripping the ball out of ball carriers’ arms when the guy is basically stopped. I don’t understand why more guys don’t do that.
~K
He was on the field not five plays ago.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s all been on draws – they can’t stop the draw play. Linebackers and safeties need to learn to take on, rather than duck, blockers. That’s been their biggest issue. Tackling has been poor as well.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Part of it is that their scrubs are better than our scrubs. I’m just worried that without Stroud the defense just won’t be any better than last year.
I agree
and I’m pretty sure we’d be right back where we were last year, with Williams, McCargo and an undersized DT in the rotation, Johnson in this case. We’re screwed without Stroud, just like we are without Peters.
I’m still kind of confused why we didn’t bring in another DT with some size this offseason….
~K
That's one
build the lines, not 3rd string TE’s….
I don’t care if Bryant never amounts to anything as a starting DT, I’d much rather have another big body in the rotation. We’re dead without Stroud.
~K
Because they have four they like, and you can’t have infinite depth. Can you see them keeping five DTs and six corners? At some point, you can’t have everything you want. :)
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Just to rub it in....
Hey, Kurupt. They keep showing the Hardy TD catch on the Bills broadcast. I’m guessing they’re still ignoring it on the Skins channel….
Oh yes
It’s all Skins all the time. Mike Patrick just finished complaining about the Bills calling a TO in this situation. He has no clue why they’d call a TO towards the end of a preseason game. Joe Theismann ended up as the voice of reason, which says a lot about the situation….
~K
Look....
I ain’t too worried about a loss in preseason… Did we ever have a winning preseason during the “glory” years???
This is, and was, our chance to see the young guys play.. Not a prelude to the season by any means!!!!!
We’re in agreement. Some good things to take away from this game. i was particularly impressed with the passing game.

I’m not talking stats, I’m talking about scheme. No more of Fairchild’s drop back a century and pray someone gets open. There was method, there was change in tempo. I liked the play-calling for the most part.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
OK
but I don’t like 1 yard outs to TE’s
Hope Schonert ramps it up a bit in the next 2 weeks. We aren’t succeeding throwing 3-5 yard passes the majority of the time….
~K
LOL. Guys… it’s the first pre-season game. Do you really think we’ve seen the whole offense?
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Of course not
but oh how I saw some of last year’s tendencies. Runs up the gut, useless short passes, etc. I’m just hoping to see improvement each week of the preseason. I’ll have hope if that’s the case, but if we see more of what we saw tonight, we are in trouble early in the season.
~K
I don't care about the score
I do care that it’s been a sloppy game all the way around…penalties, poor DT play, none yard passes on 4th downs
They only had five or six penalties, unless I’m grievously mistaken. I didn’t think the penalties part was nearly as bad as it could have been, considering it’s the first pre-season game.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
On a re-tooled offensive line playing together for the first time. Sloppy? Yes. End of the world? Clearly not.
by Brian Galliford on Aug 9, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Only false starts, though.
I checked the play-by-play; the only penalties the Bills had that weren’t false starts were declined. (one on Mitchell and the illegal formation at the end of the game.)
At least that’s something that usually improves with experience together, rather than holding or roughing the passer penalties.
Starting tackles
I know one starting tackle that didn’t make ANY mistakes tonight.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Brandon better doing EVERYTHING he can to get Peters to camp this week. Send Ed McMahon to his house if he has to.
~K
Now that would be funny to see
Send Ed McMahon down to his house with a giant check that says, “SIGNING BONUS” on it (and lots of zeroes.) Then he can stand in Peters’ yard and tear it up, sigh, and leave…
Alright...
It’s been great, blogin’ w/y’all… But settle down.. It’s only the first preseason… I know I’ll be watching it again to find some “bright” spots, as will a lot of you… For now, gonight…
Thanks for stopping by, Cinga. Don’t forget to retrieve the potential sis-in-law from the yard.

NFL Nertwork/poll
I just saw Zach Thomas in a Cowboys uniform- pretty jarring at first glance…quick poll for anyone still here or who reads this later:
Fantasy/yardage and TD league, non keeper…first pick- who do you take? Also, I was offered the 7th overall pick and a 3rd rounder for the 1st overall pick and my 8th rounder…am I crazy to be considering it because I’d like to grab Lynch there and another top 30 player over the pick of the litter? Thanks in advance,

I’d still take LT first.
But that trade is very appealing. You could get Lynch at #7, or my preference Marion Barber, who should score a lot more than Lynch, IMO. On the way back, get a stud WR and RB, and then another stud WR the other guy’s 3rd rounder. I really have no idea what I’d do with that scenario. Guess it depends on how much more you value whoever you’d take at #1 than Lynch and say Steve Smith/TJ Houshmandzadeh in round 3. I’d probably have to do the trade because you’d have 4 top players instead of 3….

I’ll defer to K on this one. He was last year’s champ, after all.

I wouldn't
There’s a significant gap between the #1 player and the #2 player at most positions – much bigger than any other gap, so you’d probably be better off taking Tomlinson or Brady (if you can stand it) first overall.
But then, I missed the playoffs in my league last year…
I hate drawing the first pick in 1 year leagues
Tomlinson just scares me a little because he’s got some tread on his tires and RBs just drop from the top to mediocre out of nowhere…I had Marshall Faulk the year it happened to him…I’m leaning towards Peterson. If I make the trade, I’m aiming for Lynch, but I worry that the RBs all go first (Tomlinson, Peterson, Addai, Westbrook, Jackson, Lynch) and the next most valuable players in my opinion are Brady and Moss and I’m obviously not picking them two scumbags…I had Barber in this league last year and Wade frustrated me at times when he’d occasionally decide it was a Julius Jones game for no good reason…My keeper league problem is a lot more fun where we’re allowed to keep up to 7 players I’m keeping:
Tomlinson
Peterson
Addai
P. Manning
Winslow
Steve Smith-CAR
and debating Holt or Cotchery for my 7th…this is the 11th year of this keeper league and I officially have a juggernaut on my hands for this year…I’ll get to draft a defense with my first pick just to rub it in.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
