Week 1 Power Rankings

The Bills have obviously made an impact on the big sports media sources as they are higher on the power rankings after one week than they've been in the last 6 years.
First the Bills were rated no. 8 on NFL.Com (link)
Second, on ESPN, which hates the Bills, they managed to get up to no. 13. (link)
Third, the Sporting News posted Buffalo up at No. 12 (link)
Fourth, CBS had the Bills as the lowest of all of them at No. 15 (link)
ESPN even went so far as to call our victory the most complete performance of the week

i saw one blog on Fan Nation
that had the Bills ranked at number 5 in the AFC, with the writer even saying the Bills proved to be the most well rounded team of Week 1. Now, I have said for months that I am a playoff believer, but even I know better than to get too excited as it is a long season and the team has crushed my spirits too many times in the past . I just can’t believe that it seems like us Bills fans on this blog are more tempered in our expectations than the media after just one game.

power rankings
Power rankings should be shunned. What’s the point? Is a team rated at 12 guaranteed to beat a team rated at 14? If you look at the comment bins after the power ranking lists you’ll see a lot of ‘no, my team should be at least 5….etc’. There is no objective criteria to rate the teams. It’s just an excuse for a sportswriter to not have to write.
Power rankings are like some errant category of thought wired to one of those malfunctioning devices that Tim Allen was always working on, on Home Improvement.
I swear to God, I read these things through and through last year: football, baseball, basketball; there is nary a lesson to be learned.

The point is to spark debate. What’s sports without a little debate?

"read these things through and through"
Thats the point. Argue all you want about how pointless they are. But fans eat this stuff up. It keeps viewers and listeners tuned in, and readers reading.

Power Rankings
I am a sucker. I always end up reading them but in my opinion it is not really about who the better team is. It seams that they judge them more by the size of their fan base and how many media friendly players they have. Like for instance everyone is on the Jets bandwagon and they barely beat the Dolphins. What a joke. Half of these writers didn’t even watch the Bills game and couldn’t name ten of their players.

I said 15
And I did so, because it is better than half, but the Bills still have room to improve and it is hard to shuffle up too much in those rankings after one game.

based on pre-season expectations and 2007 performance, a ranking around 20 to start the year was reasonable
while the Bills looked REALLY good, we shouldn’t overreact to just one game, even though it’s the only game so far. while the Bills certainly COULD end up being the 8th best team in the NFL (or, dare I say it, even better), I don’t think a ranking much higher than 15 is smart. Think of it this way. If you had to pick the under/over on the Bills being the 8th best team in the league, would anyone pick the over (better)? Probably not.

Dr. Z has us at No.9
Update: Wow. we cracked th top ten at NFL.COM and Sports Illustrated. That has me a bit nervous. Oh well, maybe it’ll give the Bills more confidence.

hard to say espn “hates the bills” when the AFC East blogger is a former sports writer in buff.
i’d say 15 sounds about right, putting together another win on sunday is going to be tough, especially on the road. jags oline issues help a lot though, running game killed us last year (i think we may have kept MJD in check, not fred though). if you told me we would be 2-0 after sea and jax i would have been fired up. i had it at 1-1 after 2 weeks, hope my L against jax turns out wrong.
