must focus against the Raiders, crucial three weeks ahead

The Buffalo Bills are off to a hot start, smashing one perennial division champ and launching a beautiful 4th quarter to get past one of the best teams going into this season. We should all be excited as we have plenty to be excited about; a resurgent defensive line, a QB in Trent Edwards who is developing into a bigger playmaker and smarter decision maker than could have been hoped for, linebackers that attack, a receiving corp that is making plays (including Freddie), and an offensive coordinator who is quickly establishing himself as the real deal in terms of play calling.
However, the next three weeks have the potential to be the most important ones of the year, precisely because we are playing lower tier squads going into a bye week before taking on the San Diego Chargers. Our Buffalo Bills have already proven that they will elevate their game when playing tough opponents, now they must prove that they will not bring it down when playing teams with lesser talent. Great teams maintain their level of play regardless of the opponent and the Bills now have to prove that they can do that.
The Raiders Darren McFadden is sure to get the ball and often against us after his welcome to the NFL moment last week, rushing for 160+ yards. Now is not the time to let up, trap games are real my friends and we are about to head into three crucial games which we must win. Trent Edwards has to be smart with his throws against the Raiders corners, I know Cutler torched them but they are still very very good players.
We made it out with wins against teams that maybe should have given us a loss or maybe two if we did not play well. That fact makes these coming games that much more important to win. Playoff teams capitalize on tough wins by staying focused against more modest competition. Let's go DJ, keep them focused.

This game scares the crap out of me. I feel like the Raiders players already have nothing to lose, and with lame-duck Kiffin in place, I assume they’ll just keep playing hard until something happens there. Well, I guess if they hate the guy then they may play like crap until he’s gone, but that didn’t seem to be the case this past week.
If we can shut down McFadden and Fargas, if he plays, and force Russell to throw, I think we’ll be fine and not have to much of a problem with Oakland. We should be able to run it much better this week than we have thus far, so that’ll be an important factor to this weeks game.
Luckily, this is another west coast team coming east for a 1PM game. Two weeks in a row for them actually after playing KC at 1pm this past week. I say we stack the box and force Russell to beat us. A home run threat like McFadden needs to be slowed down or we could see a bit of trouble…..
There’s no reason we should lose this game. We are the better team, with a better staff, have the home field advantage, along with the time advantage and are facing a raw QB. This is NOT a game to take lightly though because I hate facing these type of teams….

Agreed.
The long-term implications of the next 3 games on the rest of the Bills’ season are HUGE. Basically, we are facing 3 very beatable teams back-to-back-to-back, and starting out 5-0 (OMG 5-0) would give us a lot of breathing room in the later weeks (especially at the end of the season when we have to face NE, Cleveland, etc). Let’s DO IT!
"Jerryd is straight ahead at you. Rudy dips around. Jerryd is a rock. Rudy is the wind. Jerryd loves the ball in his hands. Rudy moves without it. Jerryd defends by getting up in your grill. Rudy plays the spaces in between. Jerryd has focused vision. Rudy sees all around him. Jerryd likes to score off of the dribble. Rudy can catch and shoot. Jerryd is aggressive. Rudy is sneaky. Jerryd will hit you hard. Rudy will annoy you until you hit him." -Dave

Games like Oakland
always worry me. Everyone makes it seem like a foregone conclusion, but you can’t let them sneak up on you. If the Bills show up prepared and ready to go, they should have no problem with a Raiders team that has trouble stopping the run and trouble passing the ball.

Week 3
This Oakland team doesn’t scare me much. I can only think of a handful of players on their roster that I like. Aside from McFadden, I like their CB (Aso-something), and the C (Grove, who I wanted coming out of college). The rest of the team is hodge podge if you ask me. On top of that, you have that Kiffin junk going on, an arrest by their overpaid DT (Kelly, from DUI), and like Kurupt said, a west coast team coming east for a one o’clocker.
Buffalo has all of it’s mojo going right now. I think Jauron & Co have assembled a team with the right kind of temperament, a team that won’t get full of themselves and overlook this Raider team. Add on what should be a super charged atmosphere at Rich Stadium, and I really don’t think Oakland has a chance.
I think the right way to get on them is to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Russell. Don’t even give them the chance to use what actually is a talented trio of RBs. I’d say do this by coming out of the gate throwing at will against Hall. Although I don’t think he’s as overrated as some do, he still is.
With that said, anything can happen on any given Sunday. [I just wanted to throw that in to appease the football/karma gods]
Who gets the pine this week? With a seemingly healthy roster, I can almost see something very similiar to last weeks. Has Copeland Bryan beat out Chris Ellis for the 4th DE? Will they go with 6 LBs and 5 Ss again for STs? Will they only run with 7 OL and 3 Backs?
While I’m rambling about players, when Fine gets healthy, who does he replace in the line-up? I know I mentioned before I don’t expect Steve Johnson to see the field this year; is it fair to say the same from Omon and Corner?
Back to the point of this post – I don’t see the Bills overlooking this game. As much as everyone has “5 and oh” in their heads, I don’t think this team does. I really think they are thinking “let’s get to three wins on Sunday.”
Also, quick poll question. If the Bills win the opening toss, would it make sense for them to follow the Madden rule and defer? They could really take advantage from the boost provided by a drunk energized crowd. I didn’t see that much in the opening game. The weather had something to do with that though. This week has a chance of rain as well, but, the excitement this team has generated in WNY will trump any stupid raindrops. To answer my own question – I’d defer.

Right off the bat, you’re forgetting about their two linebackers, Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard. Those guys are fast and active. They can give any team in this league headaches.

Yes and no.
I wasn’t forgetting them; I just didn’t single them out. That’s why I say come out throwing the ball. It seems that for whatever reason, this OL is better at pass blocking than they are at run blocking. (Personally, I do like your theory on why it is so. I don’t think it’s the sole reason, but I think it’s a reasonable one.)
I’d like to see this Bills offense take the next step in it’s evolution, all be it at a slow pace. I think against the Raiders, it’d be nice to unveil some of the “no huddle” and “up tempo” things we think they have in them. I remember the way the Colts were thrown off guard in the 90(?) home opener by the no huddle; they didn’t like it very much. With all of the “issues” the Raiders have going on this week, does anyone think they could/would prepare for this possiblity? I’ll bet a six pack of the finest barley and hops combination that Bob Ryan will be spending all of this week shining Al Davis’ shoes why secretly wondering what he would look like in a head coaches shirt. I also think Kiffin is wondering how to get himself fired without commiting an act of insubordination.
So, back to the point. Sure they have a couple of nice young LBs that even the Bills might be envy of. But, if they come out being aggressive (and I’m not talking about trick plays or bombs), they will force those LBs out of the box and into coverage. From there, we might see Lynch get his first 100 of the season. I say use an agressive pass to set up your run.

Was just going to post that. I think Howard is pretty darn good, and Morrison is above average

I wouldn't refer to the Raider game as a trap game
A trap game is one that is sandwiched in between two big games. The Jags game was a big game, but who would the Bills get caught looking ahead to? The Rams? The Ram game is more of a trap game because the Cardinals on the road is a tough game.

i sort of meant that the next three weeks are a trap "period" between Jags and Chargers
In case we all forget, this is a young team that will probably be susceptible to losing its focus when it is going into a stretch against some lesser competition after just beating two playoff teams. My hope is that Lee Evans on offense and Marcus Stroud, Kelsay and Schobel on defense can make the young guys understand how winning works. Remember, many of our starters are rookies or guys with 1 to 3 years of experience since college. James Hardy, Trent Edwards, Marshawn Lynch, Brad Butler, Paul Posluszny, Donte Whitner, Ko Simpson, Ashton Youboty, Keith Ellison. Others still have few years in the league or as starters like Fred Jackson and Jabari Greer. We need the vets to set the tone in this stretch.

A trap month?
You’re right they need to stay focused. This team hasn’t experienced enough winning to get cocky and look past anybody.

This...
isn’t really a trap game. The Bills play St. Louis next week, it’s not like they’re looking ahead or anything. Besides, if there’s one thing DJ does it’s prepare his football team. I don’t think there will ever be a situation where Jauron let’s his players skate through preparation. The Cardinals game is not even a trap game because we have the bye beofre the Chargers, so I am confident in this staff.
Running the ball against the Raiders is going to be the key to victory. They have 2 excellent cover corners who can match up with any of our receivers, so moving Lee aroumd isn’t necessarily going to be enough. The running game is going to have to be established in order keep the secondary guessing. Their LBs are also EXCELLENT in coverage and should have no problems handling Robert Royal and even Fred Jackson out of the backfield. The Raiders are weak on the DL and at safety, and if we run it effectively to unbalance their defense, it could be the O’s best game yet.
As for the Raider offense, I think Juh Marcus is going to look greener than ever. The Bills scheme is much more complex this season, and I hope Fewell does a good enough job of spying and confusing Juh.

He is terrible, and I think has very little between the ears. Yeah, it might be too early, but sometimes you can just tell. Sure you should let some QBs develop, but some don’t have to, and if he is one that needs it, he shouldn’t have been drafted #1.
The Bills CAN win every game

Al should switch him to running back. The Raiders don’t have too many of those.
