Bills/Raiders: Four Key Matchups
Buffalo Bills (2-0) vs Oakland Raiders (1-1)
Four key matchups and who wins them
The Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raiders are set to square off in a Week 3 NFL matchup in just about two days' time. In anticipation of the matchup, SB Nation's Bills and Raiders bloggers - Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings and Saint of Silver and Black Pride, respectively - have gotten together for a little cage match debate surrounding four of the game's key personnel matchups.
Which blogger - and by extension, which community - is right? Take a gander, gather your thoughts, and let's duke it out in a Bills/Raiders blogger cage match.
MATCHUP ONE: Bills PR Roscoe Parrish vs. Raiders punt coverage
Brian Galliford: I'm not worried about the coverage men that the Raiders boast - Parrish can beat anyone one-on-one, especially on punt returns. Shane Lechler, however, provides a formidable challenge because he's got a huge leg. The key to neutralizing Parrish is kicking it high and making him fair catch it; otherwise, you'd better hope the ball goes out of bounds. Lechler has the leg to force Parrish to fair catch the ball on Sunday. Still, it's going to take a solid effort by both Lechler and the coverage unit to contain the NFL's best punt returner. Advantage: Buffalo
Saint: The Raiders' special teams take great pride in having stopped THE BEST punt returner in the NFL - Devin Hester - last season, and I am sure that they have a pretty good game plan for your man Roscoe Parrish. Shane Lechler has, unfortunately, been our MVP for the last 5 years because he can put the ball where he wants it, when he wants to and is probably the best distance punter in the NFL. Look for his kicks to be high in the air and don't expect MUCH from Roscoe "Pico" Parrish this week. You may want to start thinking of other ways to score. Advantage: Oakland
MATCHUP TWO: Raiders RBs Darren McFadden/Michael Bush vs. Bills run defense
Brian Galliford: No offense to Raiders fans, but I'm not scared of this duo. Don't get me wrong - they're both incredibly talented backs, and neither of them has a ton of mileage, so they're going to be formidable for a long time as long as they stay together. But the Bills are returning from a trip to Jacksonville, where they absolutely shut down the duo of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. On the road. In blistering heat. I don't think that Oakland's offensive line will be able to open up holes big enough, consistently enough for Oakland's two excellent backs. Still, these guys are going to be a big challenge for our defense. I think we're up to it. Advantage: Buffalo
Saint: Hah, there you go again. The Bills' run D has to be as overrated as they come, at least so far. Last season the Buffalo run D was Raider-esque. Though not quite as swiss cheesy as Oakland's, it was TERRIBLE, and Oakland's run offense was 6th in the NFL without Bush OR McFadden. By the end of Sunday's game you will know what 200+ yards rushing tastes like. This O-Line may not be able to pass protect, but they can run the ball down anyone's throat. Advantage: Oakland
MATCHUP THREE: Bills WR Lee Evans vs. Raiders pass defense
Brian Galliford: I like Oakland's secondary. The back seven is clearly the strength of the Raiders defense, as y'all boast a lot of talented individuals back there. When the Raiders are fortunate enough to match up Nnamdi Asomugha on Evans, you guys will be fine. But Turk Schonert, Buffalo's new offensive coordinator, has done very well finding ways to get Evans matched up against lesser players. Evans is averaging 22.4 yards per reception this year, and most of his catches have come when Schonert has drawn up a favorable matchup. When Asomugha draws a lesser Bills receiver, however, watch out. Advantage: Push
Saint: DeAngelo Hall put the "D" back in his first name last week as he blanketed the Chiefs receivers. I know that it was the Chiefs, but the entire defense dominated and our DBs could have easily had 5-6 picks. Of course we will need to get pressure on the QB or Lee Evans could break loose, but, Nnamdi, Howard, Morrison, Huff, Routt, Hall and Wilson is one heckuva nickel package. I expect these guys to punch Evans in the mouth and then dominate him. IF he does match up with Hall and burn him a couple of times then he will be blanketed by Nnamdi all day. Advantage: Oakland
MATCHUP FOUR: Raiders pass rush vs. Bills offensive line
Brian Galliford: To be honest, I'm not at all impressed with Oakland's defensive line. I like Derrick Burgess, but I think he'll be faced with a bit of the problem that Aaron Schobel faced in Buffalo for the past two years - he doesn't have anyone to help him. Buffalo's offensive line does an outstanding job pass protecting, and the team has two running backs that have been superb picking up the blitz. It helps that Trent Edwards is very adept at getting the ball out quickly. Bold prediction: Oakland doesn't register a sack on Sunday. Advantage: Buffalo
Saint: I am looking for the Raiders to stunt up the middle this week and let the edge rushers, Burgess and Kalimba Edwards, rush the corners. We have seen how well Langston Walker pass protects and I expect at least one false start and a hold and maybe even two sacks allowed just on him alone. I am kidding (a bit) about Langston, and to be honest, I don't know which game plan will show up. If Oakland blitzes (like they did against KC) and mixes up their packages then they will get to Edwards. If they go "vanilla" (like they did against DEN) then Brian may be correct. Advantage: Push

OK, Bills and Raiders fans. Respect is the name of the game, but trash talk is a must. Who's right? Who's just a "homer"? Time for you to sound off on these matchups and the game in general.

Who's just a "homer"?
You both are.
If Oakland blitzes (like they did against KC) and mixes up their packages then they will get to Edwards.
And If the Bills played a crappy team like K.C. every week they would go undefeated. The Cheifs suck for a reason.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Seriously..
how can Saint focus solely on the Bills run D from the 2007 season? Has he not heard that we have Marcus Stroud now? Granted both of Oakland’s RBs are very talented players, but there is no way his argument is valid if he only looks at what we had last season. We’re obviously more solid up front with the addition of Stroud which in turn, as Brian sort of pointed out, makes the entire d-line perform at a much higher level. I think Saint definitely got the Oakland RBs vs. the Bills’ run D match-up ALL WRONG.

Agree
our defense is completely different with Stroud and Johnson in there. Poz and Mitchell have changed the LB corps by adding size and speed.
The Bills D should be able to dominate the trenches.

Someone's living in the past!
and it isn’t Brian.
Shutting down Devin Hester LAST YEAR, whoopity damn do. Hester isn’t the best punt returner in the game Saint, go look at the numbers from last year.
The Bills run D was terrible LAST YEAR, but this isn’t last year. We’ve solidified the front 7 and it’s shown thus far.
Looking at last years statistics and teams is pretty useless. Go look at the Pats then, they had the greatest offense in history last season. Guess that should translate to this year being the same thing, right?
That was a funny read

Bills Run D
Alright Saint, I respect any and all opinions, but to compare our run D to last years is absurd. We have a revamped, completely healthy defense that was tailored to stop the run (enter Marcus Stroud and Kawika Mitchell).

This was satire right?
Our D could have had 5 or 6 INTs? Then why’d you only have 2? I could have slept with Megan Fox last night…
I do expect Hall to punch Evans (or someone) in the mouth. Literally that is. That guy has a million dollars of talent controlled by a 10 cent brain. His “blanket” defense also gave up 90 yards to Dwayne Bowe and Tyler Pigpen.
Langston Walker to play like a Raider? Did he even give up two sacks all of last year? (I’m sure he probably did but when your line gives a league low in sacks does it really matter.) Has he been called for a penalty yet this year? Despite playing out of position and being shuffled around? It definitely didn’t happen in week 1.
by twoeightnine on Sep 19, 2008 3:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Just checked the box score.
Only holding penalty was on Butler. 4 total penalties last week, 1 the week before. I think that’s what the Raiders normally call a quarter of football.

I think every team could have 5 or 6 INT’s each week. That’s nothing to really brag about. Haha

Nice to know there are some fellow bills fans in the area. I always take a lot of crap for being a Bills fan. As you can imagine most of my friends from around here are cowboys fans. That game last year was a killer for me. I was going to go see a Bills game this year in AZ. but it turns out it is on the same weekend as my elk hunt. So instead I will be in cloudcroft hunting. I might still make the Denver game though. Its hard to see my team living way out here.

Is Saint Al Davis??
I lol’ed when I read this article. I wont deny my own bias, but it requires some serious lack of objectivity to think that Shane Lechler is a larger weapon than Roscoe. Lets offer Al Davis a trade, Lechler for Parrish and see how quickly even he accepts.
by TheHandsomeJohnClayton on Sep 19, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i dunno
i remember a couple years ago when bills fans bragged constantly about moorman being a weapon. i agreed at the time, and lechler is a monster right now. field position changes games, especially in a game that could be low scoring this weekend. im interested in seeing how the wind is at the ralph, love when hyped punters come in and get pooped on by the gusts.
im fired up for this week, but also concerned. going to be interesting, if we avoid turnovers and stop the run we should be alright. crowd will be intense regardless.

D Hall
SAINT: “DeAngelo Hall put the "D” back in his first name last week as he blanketed the Chiefs receivers."
Wasn’t he taken to school by a rookie in week 1? Good luck doing the same w/ Lee Evans this week.

He got schooled by Dwayne Bowe last week too. All of Bowe’s catches were to Hall’s side, and there was only one incompletion to Bowe on Hall’s (right) side. Michael Huff made the tackle once, so I’m not sure if Hall had coverage on that play, but the rest of them Hall tackled Bowe after he made the catch.
If that’s Hall blanketing receivers, then I can’t imagine that guy stopping Evans when he’s on him…..

Homers.
Listen we all have a bit of a Homer bias but lets call a spade a spade. Oakland will be picking in the top five again this year (so will the Chiefs) and we will be in the playoffs. Edwards is going to pick Hall apart anytime he covers Evens. Our run D is averaging under a 100 yards a game and shut down Drew and Taylor last week. Mcfadden is hurting and Fargas is out. Russell might as well get used to running backwards or lying down or else he is going to get hurt. They are to one dimensional. We will stack the box and stop the run. Then we will run up the score and force them to throw the ball and that is something they cant do. Sorry Oakland.

wow Saint really thinks the raiders are going to win
i started reading that post and by the end I really wished it was two days from now at 1 o clock so we could shove that 200+ yards rushing, shutting down roscoe, blanketing secondary crap up his ass. Heres a better matchup: our pass rush vs the Extraordinarily hyped Jamarcus russel that went 6-20 (or somewhere around there) for under 100 yards on a team/secondary that could easily be the worst in football. Seriously bro, you need a passing game to be able to have that 200+ yard run game that your talking about. With the past people we have had on here from other blogs I respected their humble opinions alot but this guy gets under my skin. Cant wait for Sunday.

Seriously bro, you need a passing game to be able to have that 200+ yard run game that your talking about.
Clearly, you don’t. Russell passed for 55 yards last week, and the Raiders still ran for 300 yards. Kind of puts a hole in your theory, even if they did it against the Chiefs.
Don’t let Saint’s optimism get to you – he’s a confident guy. I’m confident in this Bills team. Let them do the talking.
by Brian Galliford on Sep 19, 2008 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely homers
Sounds like you’re both homers, actually. It just seems like Saint is a little more delusional. 200+ yards from McFadden and Bush? Give me a break. Maybe he means 200+ yards by the Bills defense off of fumble recoveries.
Brian, you might be underestimating the Raiders secondary, but Saint can’t quite make a conclusion about their play based on shutting down the Chiefs. Besides Dwayne Bowe and some really old tight end, who did they have to cover? And who was throwing to them? Can anyone tell me?
by JayAreZee on Sep 19, 2008 4:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I have never made a statement to the contrary. Nothing wrong with being a homer as long as you’re realistic, in my book – and realistically, the Bills have several advantages in this game that the Raiders probably won’t be able to account for. :)
by Brian Galliford on Sep 19, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh, I agree completely…I just think the Raiders secondary is their one strong point. Everything other matchup goes to the Bills. Of course, I’m also a homer.
As I’m a proud owner of a Brian Moorman jersey, I think it’s going to be great to see how the field position battle plays out too…and I hope that Moorman shows everyone why he SHOULD be the starting punter for the AFC in Hawaii every year.
by JayAreZee on Sep 19, 2008 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
All right, lets get real
1) No one has the advantage when we have Parrish on punt returns except the Bills. Other teams can only hope to contain him, and the Jags have a good coverage unit as per their stops on kick offs, and despite a penalty Parrish still almost broke one. Advantage: Bills
2)I think it is a draw with the running game. MacFadden is a beast, and Bush is a light footed big man with solid skills. i can see them putting up over a hundred yards, but their average is going to be down. If they do most of their running to the outside, than they are going to hate our speedy D. This leans to Buffalo if we play well, but a draw if all else runs equal. Advantage: none
3) Evans is going to pose big problems. He ust gets open too much, so I see a double team, so watch out for James Hardy and Roscoe on offense. Evans might open up other players, and as soon as that happens, they will try and cover more evenly and then Evans gets’em for deep one. Advantage: Bills
4)"vanilla" that is crap…Denver smoked them incredibly, and the Bilsl are a top 5 pass blocking team. look for Edwards to have a picnic in the backfield before he hits receivers. Advantage: Bills
This is not where Oakland wants to be on Sunday. Hostile environment, team on the rise, uneven match ups in all facets of the game. The only thing that keeps them from geetting killed is if they can run successfully and eat the clock. If not, there done, but they still lose.
The Bills CAN win every game

This is great!
I haven’t seen Bills fans this fired up in years. The Ralph should be electric is the fans have this kind of passion on a website.
People can feel it. There is some nervousness there, but people can feel this team is different. It can change quickly as we have seen, but fans want a winning team so bad.
We are fighting a war, the economy is struggling, politics is depressing; people in Buffalo just want something good to happen.
Go Bills!

Buffalo's run defense
Saint earns a great big “DUH” for his comments on Buffalo’s run defense. Really, Last year Buffalo’s defense was decimated by injuries, particularly the linebacking and defensive backfield. They lacked a big body in the middle of the line to force offensive lines to account for him in blocking schemes. This season (so far) the Bills are healthy. They’ve brought in talent upgrades in Kawika Mitchell, Spencer Johnson, and especially Marcus Stroud. Teams cannot block Stroud with one guy. That frees up other defenders to make plays. Buffalo certainly needs to have a healthy respect for what McFadden and Bush can do, assuming McFadden can play with his sore toe, but for Buffalo, this is not last year’s defense, and to give an analysis as if it is only makes him look stupid.

Buffalo Receiving - more than Lee Evans
It may be that Oakland could largely shut down Lee Evans, though I think he’ll get his catches. The flaw in focusing on that matchup is that it neglects the fact that Turk Schonert has designed an offense that spreads the ball around pretty effectively, and looks for matchups. If Lee Evans is covered, Trent Edwards seems to have no problem passing the ball to Robert Royal or Josh Reed or James Hardy or Fred Jackson. Can Oakland cover everyone well all the time? Trent seems to have a knack of finding the guy who isn’t covered as well.
by TigerJ on Sep 20, 2008 1:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
agreed
And that is why when everyone was talking about our weak WR last year I thought they were wrong. It is about fitting a system to the talent you have.
I am trying really hard not to fall into the “OLD” Bills fan way of thinking that “something has got to go wrong.” The Bills are a good team that is just going to get better over the course of the season. I think Sunday will be a good test for the Bills run D. Perry is great at disguising coverages and blitzes so we are going to confuse the he!! out of Russell. I think we will get a pick 6 this game on one of those screen plays (it will be a 3rd down blitz from the LBs that Youboty reads the screen and takes it to the house). I would say 120 or so yards on the ground for the Raiders with Russell having under 100 yards passing with two picks. I think the Bills put up some points.
The final score: BILLS 27 – OAKLAND 10

As a Raiders fan...
I more or less agree with the bulk of comments here (the legitimate ones, not the homer stuff). Those of you who are looking at this objectively, though, are pretty spot on.
The Raiders simply are not at the level the Bills are. It would be a pretty huge upset if they played well enough to beat you guys, come sunday. I think we are heading the right direction, but you guys are a playoff team right now. We are still a couple of pieces, and one dead owner (sadly) away from making a splash in the league again.
I smell a 24-10 victory for you guys as well. The truth of the matter is that this is a huge test for the Oakland Raiders of 2009. We have to find out just where we are on the leagues radar. Truth be told, I’d be happy with an 8-8 season. I feel like with our schedule, and our coach, we can get there. If reports come true, and Kiffin is given the boot, sadly I see 4-12 in our future again.
We just aren’t there yet. I feel like on offense the seeds have been planted, we just need to be patient and shore up our offensive line. No one is taking our potential game makers lightly, and that’s something different from a couple years ago. On that same front, we have a formidable secondary that seems like it should be able to shut down a good to great passing team when it wanted to. Whether or not it wants to remains to be seen.
Regardless, I am rooting for the Bills this year. I hate the pats, and I want to see you guys make them squirm. Take the division away from them. You guys seem to have a pretty big window, and will do big things.
Good luck on sunday.

I like the direction of your franchise too, my friend. I’m still not sold on Russell, but clearly he has the tools to be elite – otherwise he wouldn’t have been the #1 overall pick. If you guys ever get an offensive line together, he’d get better instantly, in my book… right now, they’re just run blockers.
Good luck right back atcha.

offensive line
I think the Raiders defense is not as bad as many claim and your offense has talent at all the skill positions. Well, Ron Curry is really letting you down, but if you got one great receiver (thanks for nothing Javon Walker huh?) and an offensive line I think your team would instantly be a playoff contender.

the raiders have a good seconday good offensive line decent but injured running backs and thats it.
I do believe the Raiders are a little underrated but come on you beat the Chiefs, very impressive. Denver made you look like a high school team and you have no passing game. We went into Jacksonville and won and beat a second playoff team in as many weeks. So lets be realistic here. You are coming to our house and we will protect it. GO BILLS. Plus offensive line is all about chemistry look for Peters and the rest of the line to gell a lil more this week and especially after the bye week. Raiders are bottom 5 team in the league still.
