Postgame Thread: Bills rally to defeat Raiders, 24-23

Bestteameverstanding_medium      Oak_medium
Buffalo Bills 24 - Oakland Raiders 23

An unbelievable game and an unBILLievable finish.  The Bills rallied from down 23-14 with under 5 minutes to go to defeat the Raiders 24-23 on a Rian Lindell 38 yard field goal as time expired.  A great finish and a great performance by Trent Edwards.  3-0 is a beautiful thing, especially after the performance for 3 quarters.  More on the big comeback win later!!!!

On line feed.

Hope I can say this… But those watching on line have seen the scroll on the bottom from xs-sports… I encourage ya’ll to check them out… They are making it easy this year to find these game links…. No, I’m not associated in any way, just a Bills fan!!!

by Cinga on Sep 21, 2008 4:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Have you donated to them before?

I am a little worried about giving out my credit card #.

I use

a prepaid CC for anything on line… Lot less to lose, if things go bad…

I should be on Turk's staff

I told you that the Bills should spread them out and go!! Anymore questions about Trent Edwards?? Injury prone,NOT. Don’t have a strong arm, NOT. This dude is a leader. Wait Schonert’s on the other line. Your welcome Turk…

Good win.

Congrats. Honestly, in my opinion, you guys got outplayed this morning (at least for 56 minutes, you did.). You happened to be beneficiaries of the Al Davis to get Lane Kiffin fired fund. I’ll never understand why Rob Ryan stopped pressuring Trent Edwards. Let’s not pretend your O-Line just decided to show up 56 minutes in, the Raiders stopped blitzing and went into zone coverage for no reason that I can think of, other than to give the game away.

Regardless, I thought we as a young up and coming team (now probably with a new coach), looked very good against a team that is a little further on the rise. I’m not going to say you didn’t earn it, a win is a win. I just wish I understood our defensive coordinators logic. It looked like he wanted us to lose this game. It doesn’t really matter to you, but as a Raiders fan that’s what I’m thinking about at this time.

Regardless, I have nothing but respect for this franchise, and where its going. Congrats on 3-0. With the dismantling of the Patriots (by Miami, no less), it would look as if you guys are poised to take your respective division this year. I wish you all the luck in the future.

by Amoc on Sep 21, 2008 4:24 PM EDT   0 recs

Four and five wide took advantage of their defense

by the Skycap on Sep 21, 2008 4:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No doubt.

The stupid ejection of Gibril Wilson (which wasn’t really merited, imo) didn’t help matters. I’ve seen people get away with a lot worse and not get flags tossed their way, he just happened to have all eyes on him at the time.

You guys played to win. Don’t get it twisted though. Today, we consistantly looked better than you guys did on both sides of the ball. Respect the fact that we played you guys harder than you ever imagined we would, and just take the win as a hard fought victory.

by Amoc on Sep 21, 2008 4:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He threw a punch. It was merited and well deserved. What a moron

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure.

He did not throw a punch. Watch the replay. It was clearly open handed. You can over exaggerate if you want, but if a player on any other team does that, it’s nothing. That’s just a negative of being an Oakland Raider.

by Amoc on Sep 21, 2008 4:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He swung at Josh Reed right in front of the refs. Open fist or not, that was a boneheaded play and deserved the ejection. I was surprised Reed didn’t get tossed too though, he swung right back at him…..

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Okay.

Seriously. Watch the replay. It isn’t that big of a deal, and it happens ALL the time in football. That isn’t the reason we lost, it was just an inconvenience. You guys definitely earned the win, don’t let me negate that by dwelling on that ejection.

by Amoc on Sep 21, 2008 4:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it is a big deal when its a players head and yes it was a punch. there are such things as open fist punches. he deserved to be thrown out. theres no need for that in a football game.

by billsstein on Sep 21, 2008 5:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually, it looked like the heel of his hand – Reed was on the ground and Wilson hit straight down with his hand. I was a little surprised it was an ejection and not just a 15-yard penalty; perhaps he was also verbally abusive to the official? Or it could be for punching a defenseless player on the ground, as opposed to face-to-face.

by Krenn on Sep 21, 2008 5:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah.

Now that I don’t doubt. That kind of stuff seems to be above Gibril Wilson (at least in his career thus far.) Maybe the silver and black is bleeding into his skin a little bit too much.

by Amoc on Sep 21, 2008 6:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

and you guys played your hearts out, I give you that. Your D dominated us for a while, not sure your O was anything special though. Other than the 84 yarder, your O had 163 yards…..a pretty dismal performance IMO, especially considering you guys earned great field position early and often and couldn’t punch it in.

Heckuva game though, and an awesome performance by your front 7. Unfortunately, the past few years we know exactly how you feel, playing not to lose.

The Raiders have my respect if they continue playing tough and smart ball. Your O still has a ways to go, but that D was phenomenal for much of today. Good luck the rest of the year, and please take care of the other AFC East teams when you play them.

by oaklandSMASH on Sep 21, 2008 10:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice post and thanks

don’t you think the 3 turnovers had something to do with our slow start on offense?

by Joe P. on Sep 21, 2008 4:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Absolutely.

Even without those turnovers you were consistantly looking at 3 and outs after converting maybe one or two first downs. Don’t get me wrong, you guys played to win, and you won. However, I feel like the gameplan we were implementing had worked for most of the game. I just see no reason to shift to the prevent to win defense when we are already preventing with what we are doing. Those turnovers were costly but they were also on part because our defense was on all cylinders. You guys didn’t just cough them up for fun.

by Amoc on Sep 21, 2008 4:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

lets be serious

Amoc is right about one thing that made me lose my voice. What the hell is wrong with our pass protection??? I watched Jason Peters all game and he got burned by whoever it was (i think it was Edwards who beat him consistently) all day long! that is unacceptable! But i see it in the same way the cowboys beat us last year, we’re a good team because good teams find a way to win and we did. But lets not kid ourselves, our o-line got dominated and it is very upsetting.

McKelvin and Hardy - rookies of the year

not to mention our pass rush was pathetic

Good thing we had solid coverage to back it up. and we happened to be playing Jamarcus Russel lol

Are we for real?

I guess…….Helll Yes, we are not the Bills of recent memory, we can win a game in which we are down in the 4th and come back and win, I am certainly drinking my Trent Koolaid right about now……First place!

OMG

I can’t believe that we pulled out this win… This win just confirmed to me and the rest of the doubters that the Bills are not a year away from becoming a playoff team…. What a great win… Trent is the future of this team…. I am GIDDY!!!!

Donte Whitner

Say what you want about that personal foul, but he was making a statement. NO SHOWBOATING IN MY HOUSE!! Another great leader!!

by the Skycap on Sep 21, 2008 4:27 PM EDT   0 recs

eh

wasn’t a smart play, he was just highly ticked off and his emotions got to him….i wouldn’t say that’s making a statement….

He was

firing up his teamates… Sign of a great leader…

Thank you Cinga!! He showed a NO GIVE UP mentality.

by the Skycap on Sep 21, 2008 4:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i liked the way he tackled him, i think it did show a lil “screw you, you cant do that to us” type attitude, something the bills needed at that point

Bills make me wanna SHOUT!

by silverstreak3k on Sep 21, 2008 4:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yes he kept hustling

but the penalty was just moronic

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

no it was dumb…..get in his face and get in your teammates faces to show you are a leader then…..don’t committ a stupid personal foul penalty because you are angry. That’s something that cost teams win, but luckily didn’t hurt us at all on that play.

Anybody know what the Raiders penalty was on that play? Did they get Higgins for taunting?

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

could have been before or after

did you see higgins little jig in the endzone, i mean it could have been taunting for slowing down and looking back, or the celebration, who knows

Bills make me wanna SHOUT!

by silverstreak3k on Sep 21, 2008 4:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh

higgins was def looking back and talking shit pre TD.

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 4:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

nah, that's not a penalty

he didn’t point at him or make a gesture, just slowed down like a turd. He must have done something after whitner tackled him 10 yards deep

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I know

Im just saying that he egged it on with his little song and dance. If he just went into the endzone, done maybe a spike whit wouldnt have tackled him i guarantee it

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 4:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree

Higgins deserved a smack in the teeth, but still it could have cost us

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Statement

Kurupt, the penalty lets the raiders and the Bills defense know that they dont take that shit and they arent about to give up after a 84 yard TD. It showed the raiders that even after that touchdown that could have easily sealed the game the bills D wasnt done playing. Its not about “oh im pissed im gonna hit you after u score”. I commend whitner, woulda done the same thing.

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 4:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

For other teams that shows a lack of discipline. I liked the hustle, which should have been enough to prove to his teammates he wasn’t quitting, but getting the penalty was just plain stupid.

I’m also not saying I wouldn’t have done the same thing once Higgins started slowing down, but it’d still be a dumb mistake on my part and something that isn’t necessary.

Oh well, we won, let’s move on to positive things!!!!

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Your right

Donte took that penalty on purpose…

by Cinga on Sep 21, 2008 4:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I would rather he hit him hard the next time

Stupid penalties are not smart football

He made a statement. As the D leader he showed them we dont take that shit. I applaud him

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 4:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Penalties are not making a statement guys. I can’t applaud that. I don’t think making stupid errors to hurt your team is smart in any way.

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

disagree

I respectfully disagree. In my time playing football if someone on the other team is showboating and taunting us, letting him know whose in charge pumped me up more than anything

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 4:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

agree 100%

McKelvin and Hardy - rookies of the year

Hockey

In this sport a player will take a fighting penalty to inject life into his team. Maybe, Kurupt, that was Whitner’s intentions. A penalty on the kickoff wouldn’t have hurt much. The Bills would have started from the 20 yd.line.

by the Skycap on Sep 21, 2008 6:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed. ill take that penalty any day as long as he doesnt get thrown out

Make room on the Bills bandwagon

Jay Glazer, we have a spot for you.

by the Skycap on Sep 21, 2008 4:33 PM EDT   0 recs

That was just a heckuva a win today. Great, great comeback by Trent, Turk, Lynch and the rest of the O.

A fine job by the D, other than ONE huge play. Take away those 84 yards and we allowed an extremely stout 163 yards. We held them under 100 yards rushing, which was pretty much due to a solid, solid second half by the front 7. Russell only had 72 yards until the TD pass, another awesome job by the D.

I think we can say Trent is a stud. When given enough time to set his feet, he’s deadly. I know you can say that about many QB’s, but he just needs enough time to set and he can get rid of it accurately. He has “IT” which is simply awesome and something we’ve been dying for!!!!

We’ve got to get that OL improved though. They really stepped up in the 4th Q, but wow were they absolutely ABUSED early on. Peters has looked quite terrible thus far, and is showing his new contract can wait, a while.

And great job by the receivers down the stretch. Evans turned his horrific game, into a solid one by giving Trent an open option and making the grabs when we needed them the most. Welcome to offense Roscoe Parrish, those were some big grabs. And Josh Reed was his solid self. Too bad Superfan82 is gone, he might have an actual nice thing to say about him (doubtful though). And Mr. Lynch’s hard running really saved us early. I just wish we could get him some running room so he doesn’t have to do everything on his own.

Great win and in my quickly changing opinion, we went from a somewhat pretender to a team that just knows how to win, in a matter of an hour or so. I was critical earlier, but I was proven wrong, thankfully. Love it! Now we just have to play consistent for a full game, especially on the OL……….

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:36 PM EDT   0 recs

This is a game we should not have won

We won because our QB said NO I WON’T LOSE, and our D did their best despite little help from STs and the O in the 1st 3 quarters.

This is a good one for us to get, because it will take any sort of feeling of superiority from our team and make them buckle down and play hard ALL 16 games instead of just against the good teams. We needed a wake up call early, and the Raiders gave it to us.

To the Raiders fans out there, your team played an AWESOME game, to bad your coaches cost you the game with some bad calls near the end there.

I hope the team looks back on this as the learning experience it was. In the past 10-14 years, this is a game the Bills LOSE no questions asked. It spoke a lot to the heart of Trent, Lynch, Reed and Lee today.

Peters, you have better get your butt in gear in practice and the film room, your not getting an invite back to Hawaii with games like this one all season. You MUST do a better job protecting Trent, or he won’t be upright for 16 games.

Fear the mighty helmet wearing gopher, he is coming for your soul....

by WABillsfan on Sep 21, 2008 4:37 PM EDT   0 recs

One thing is for sure

I bet they come out MUCH BETTER against the Ram on the road next week. We cannot overlook anyone, and today proved that…..

The Raiders today were the Bills of the past X number of seasons. We play very well, struggle to punch in TD’s, play not to lose in the 4th and end up blowing a solid lead. That was like the Cowboys game last year, only we were on the good side for once!!!!

Good post there

~K

by Kurupt on Sep 21, 2008 4:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Team

I think the first halve was played like tthe young team that they are and i think they did a little underestimating, thinking the game was won before it began. The second halve was played like a playoff team. If we were down in the fourth quarter by 9 last year it would have been a lost. (not to mention cutting the lead and then being down by 9 on the next drive.) The Bills are a new team this year boys, believe it. :D

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 4:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Consider it payback

Last year, the Bills lost a few games they should have won. Ultimately, that’s the difference between a playoff team and an also-ran — the playoff teams win a few games they shouldn’t.

I can’t wait until the Bills play the Patriots; it’s probably the only way I’ll get to see them this year!

by rexob on Sep 21, 2008 5:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Let’s go Eagles, Jaguars, Saints, and Browns(maybe?). I want to see other teams that have been winning start losing this week!!!!

Wow Denver looks GREAT thus far this season. They are currently smoking the overrated Saints….

Jay Cutler is on his way to league MVP if this keeps up. Wow, that’s a great offense right now. That game at the end of the season is going to be a tough one!!!

Being a NorCal native like myself.........

It was sooo awesome watching Trent do his thing. My man-crush knows no limits with him

Josh Reed = Huge today

Marshawn = The man today

Evans disappointed me today………he def didnt help his contract talks today…neither did Peters

I got three warnings today from my Apt manager for “excessive noise” and when Rian made that kick I got yelled at by my neighbor (huge raiders fan)

I wouldnt even care if I had gotten kicked out…….that win was HUGE and AWESOME!!!!

Miss you Kotch

by norcaliangelsfan on Sep 21, 2008 5:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Evans made up for it in clutch with some good catches, but the fumble was ridiculous, and everyone has to know that was no INT early on. The OAK offense benefited from early field position, and rightfully so, but our D kept us in, and then Turk switched it up, let Trent do his thing, and that was that. Great win

The Bills CAN win every game

by killascript on Sep 21, 2008 5:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He did play better in the second half.......

but that fumble at the end of the first was horrible………and the shove off on Hall….just not a good day to be Lee Evans……He’ll be fine though…..he can make it up to me later………..

Miss you Kotch

by norcaliangelsfan on Sep 21, 2008 6:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

not to mention

a ticky tack offensive pass intereference call that would have been a 35 yard gain. The fumble came when evans was trying to switch ball hands. fluke in my opinion

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 6:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

saying

was just saying it was an either way call in my opinion. I saw a change of direction more than a push from the play. Idk I tend to favor my team a lil when i look at penaltes i guess haha

by jdol1568 on Sep 21, 2008 6:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it was a good play by Asomugha punching it out. Still Evans should have had better ball control there considering we were driving and needed some momentum….
