Bills' Edwards making name for himself in fourth quarter

Edwards coming through with clutch plays (buffalobills.com)

For the past two weeks, Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards has begun to make a name for himself as a clutch performer in the fourth quarter.  Even though he has only a dozen NFL starts under his belt, Edwards has now led the Bills to fourth-quarter comeback wins in three of his eight NFL victories - and two of those have come in the past two weeks.

Edwards has enjoyed an outstanding start to the 2008 season.  He's completing 67 percent of his passes, has thrown for 733 yards - at 7.8 yards per attempt, no less - has three scores and, most importantly, the young Bills team he's in charge of leading has stormed out of the gate to a 3-0 record.  Edwards' 96.6 quarterback rating makes him the fifth-highest rated quarterback in the AFC - behind Philip Rivers, Jay Cutler, Brett Favre and Ben Roethlisberger.

What's more, folks close to the organization have been equally impressed with Edwards' growth off the field as they have been with his play on it.  Edwards is becoming more assertive in just his second NFL season.  He's calm, he's confident, and he keeps his teammates confident.  That's just as valuable as the clutch throws he's been making.  Our young quarterback is really coming into his own; to say he's "arrived" would be premature, but "arriving" seems fairly accurate.  If the kid keeps working at it, we might just have something special on our hands.

Just how good has Edwards been in the fourth quarter?  Normally I'd pick apart numbers, analyze them, and expand on what they mean.  This morning, I don't have to - not by a long stretch.  This stat line speaks for itself, and proves exactly how clutch Edwards has been in the team's last two victories:

Edwards in the fourth quarter (in wins over JAX and OAK)
21/29, 268 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 123.9 QB rating
Bills: 27 points scored in 4-point and 1-point victories

The kid gets it done in the clutch, folks.  The Bills may have found themselves a quarterback.  I'm going to do my best to keep my enthusiasm in check - but please be understanding if I fail miserably.

No Need to Check Yourself ...

As the fourth quarter unfolded, I said to myself … “we’ve got a quarterback”. This kid was on the money. And the next time I hear about arm strength I’m going to scream. His ability to nail the 17 yard out (or in) has been killing defenses. I think back to last year’s pass against the Redskins and all offseason I wondered if that was one flukie play or was it a sign. Then there was the preseason Steelers game. Then the key passes to Evans in the opener. Then last week and this week. This kid has a basket of those “Redskins” throws uder his belt now. He’s for real! When you listen to him describe it after the game, he has an incredible grasp of where everyone is supposed to be (our guys and their guys). I’m not sure you can teach that skill. Studying will hone it, but some guys will never acquire that skill. He’s 24, he’s got it, and he’s going to a Bill for 12 years.

Other 4th quarter numbers

In the Jags and Raiders games, the Bills offense has run a combined 15 times and passed 30. The opponents have stacked the box 8 times (53.3) and blitzed only 4 (13). The defenses have been allowing Edwards time to look at the coverage, go through multiple reads, make the correct decision, and step into accurate throws. Defenses will start bringing the heat on Edwards in the 4th quarter during close games. Buffalo certainly didn’t handle it very well early in the Raiders game…

If you really want a reason for optimism, think about the fact that Edwards dropped back 47 times yesterday. 47! He didn’t have an INT (Evans’ two fumbles weren’t on Edwards.) or even really come close to having an INT. The only time I can recall a Raider even having a shot at the ball was when Evans ran a different hot route than Edwards was expecting and, even then, the defender was facing the pass and still couldn’t get close enough to keep it from one-hopping to him. When Edwards made his decisions they were the right ones. When he threw the ball it was generally accurate, three overthrows and a couple of knuckleballs aside.

Raiders change of coverage

Wouldn’t you say that the Raiders went with different coverages partly because of Wilson’s ejection? You can’t always run the same coverages if you don’t have the same personnel (like what happened to the Bills’ defense last year). If one guy goes out, it can affect the rest of the system.

It's possible

but we seemed to pick on the CB’s more than anything. There were only a handful of passes over the middle, or anywhere near where Wilson would be. I think…

I think Kiffin went conservative

That’s just a guess, of course. But he was up by 9, then 2 for all of 90 seconds, then 9, and finally 2. I think he was trying to use the clock as his ally and counting on Buffalo chewing up too much time with all of the underneath routes. Kiffin’s first error in judgement was in not recognizing that the short passing game is Edwards’ strength. Kiffin’s second error in judgement was in not using his timeouts. Jauron clearly wanted to run the clock down to 3 seconds and try to win on a field goal. I’m not saying that the Raiders would have gotten the ball back anyway as Edwards was in rhythm and Lynch was in Beast Mode….but why not at least leave yourself the possiblity of getting the ball back?

This game may have ended Kiffin’s tenure as the head coach of the Raiders. Since Davis won’t fire him (and thereby have to pay him off) he’ll likely try to move Kiffin into a job that Kiffin finds completely humiliating. Maybe something along the lines of swabbing out toilets during homegames while wearing a little pink dress… It’s really too bad because I actually do like Kiffin’s overall philosophy—run and stop the run—even if his team couldn’t execute it against the Bills.

There’s also talk that it was Rob Ryan who made the call to “go soft” defensively as blatant insubordination to get Kiffin fired. Poor Raiders fans… their owner is crazy.

Just talk?

Kiffin has zero control over the defense, it’s all Ryan. Insubordination or not (wouldn’t surprise me) all defensive decisions are made by Ryan (and possibly Davis.)

2-8-9 is dead on with this

Out here on the West Coast I get a bit more of the Cali coverage of football on FSN and I gotta tell ya, its nuts some of the stuff flying around the Raiders.

Kiffin came right out Week 1 and said in an interview and I am paraphrasing from memory here), “Go talk to Al and Ryan about the Defense, I have no control over that side of the ball.” Basically, Al tells Ryan to do what he thinks is best and Kiffin can go hang. It works when your opponent is the Chiefs and quite well against a Bills team that seems to be unable to get out of its own way sometimes.

Thank the football gods we got Trent because he wouldn’t let our team lose that game. He stayed on his teammates to stay positive and to go out and make plays, and he lead them by taking a beating and still making the throws when we needed them. Good leaders do that, and I think we have ourselves a keeper here.

You're not the only one excited about Edward's play

I was watching a little of the ESPN pregame stuff (I flip between the big 3, and when 1 gets too annoying I switch to one of the others), Steve Young commented on how good Trent has looked and even went as far as to say, “Don’t be surprised if Trent Edwards makes the Pro-Bowl”

Young seems to be one of the few guys in Bristol who I can stand, (he coined the phrase J-E-T-S – JUST-END-THE-SEASON) But it may be a little early for that kind of talk. I do like it though.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Dan Fouts

couldn’t say enough good things about Trent; his release, poise, understanding of what the defense is doing and what he was doing on the sidelines in between series. You can really tell he is starting to embrace his role with the team. I’m sure the Bills are already formulating a package to offer Edwards in the form of an extension.

Sadly, Dan Fouts knows nothing else

He made some really bad calls this past game. But when he speaks on QBs I do still listen, because he knows about that real well. But, lets hope people continue to take Trent lightly, at least till we have a playoff spot sewn up, eh?

In the immortal words of Brad Childress "You've got to have the mentality of a serial killer at quarterback sometimes"

Per Peter King as SI.com yesterday: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/09/21/Week3/3.html

Now, which part of a Serial Killers tendancy do I think Trent has? The ability to focus in on the task at hand regardless of how weird/hard things get around him when the chips are down. Critical for a QB and it seems a Serial Killer.

In that case, shouldn’t the Pats move Wes Welker to QB? That guy has serial killer written all over him….

Can I ask what it is with Coaches and Criminals?

There are other quotes relating to pro athletes from coaches, including this gem from Jack McKeon several years ago about Josh Beckett “I told you Josh Beckett was special. He’s got the guts of a burglar. This guy is going to be something special. I was not about to take him out in the ninth.”

Wow, I just mean, wow. The guts of a burglar and also, the tendancies of a Serial Killer. No wonder Pacman keeps getting work in pro sports! He is PERFECT for it!

Another clutch finish by the Bills

Trent seems to have a knack for getting it done in the fourth quarter. Good thing to have in a QB, just wish that they didn’t wait until the 4th to score all those points. That said, it was a good win, reminiscent of the Bills teams from the late ’80’s & early ’90’s.

Get the Bills back to the big game!

Did the Bills play faster in the 4th?

I was hoping for no-huddle from the middle of the 3rd quarter on. Although the Bills didn’t go that far, they did seem to play at a faster pace. This helped Trent get into a rhythm and wind the previously superb Raiders D. I don’t understand why they didn’t do it sooner.

Also, they took too much time to run a play after the tipped ball interference call. Reversing the call on the field was correct, but they (Trent/Turk) should have been aware of the situation and run a quick play. I don’t like the idea of taking advantage of a bad call, but it works both ways in the course of a game (e.g. Hall’s ripping the ball out of an obviously downed Lee Evans).

I don't think...

it was a matter of whether Evans was down or not – he never clearly possessed the ball, which is why it was ruled an interception. If he had the ball taken from him after possessing it it would have been ruled a fumble. I think they made the right call.

by BuffaloWill on Sep 22, 2008 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

Evans never fully possessed the ball. It was the right call.

Tie

the catch was a tie in my opinion and the tie goes to the reciever. could have gone either way

Refs didn't let them run a quick play

Edwards was ready to run a play when the refs stopped him for no discernable reason. About 90 seconds later they let the Bills get back to the line when Kiffin challenged it. He’d certainly had plenty of time to decide to throw the flag.

Trent is taking an Eli Manning-esque road to stardom. He looks solid or decent for much of the game, will have his fair share of mistakes, but amazingly turns it on in the 4th Q and becomes a HOF’er. I absolutely LOVE IT! Good QB’s perform best when the lights are brightest and Trent seems to be doing just that.

He does have a ways to go though. Early in games, he seems to struggle a bit more with his accuracy. Not sure why, but he’s had one excellent start and two poor starts thus far this year.

I really want to see the slant incorporated in this offense more. I think that’s a pattern Trent and our WR’s would excel at once they get enough experience doing it enough times….

took Eli 4 years though.........

He…..is……just…….awesome…..that is all.

Miss you Kotch......Love you Trent

I completely agree

we should run the slant more. Much more. It plays to our strengths. Trent seems to be most effective throwing over the middle and it would produce more YAC. I think Hardy is built for the slant and would shine there.
Also, the ability to rise above the rest and take a team to a W in the 4th Q is an uncommon quality. Trent is going to be a great QB. I hope we extend him before he debuts in the pro bowl.

Slant

I think Evans and Reed would be very good running slant routes. I dunno about Hardy. In the Jax game i remember Hardy dropping one on a slant that was a little bit high but cmon man hes 10 feet tall. I don’t want to get too fed up with what we should be doing right now because were 3-0 haha. I’ll leave the play calling to the Turk

by jdol1568 on Sep 22, 2008 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Yea trent did great in the fourth quarter picking the D apart by hitting the recievers doing intermediate routes, many times in the middle. I think Trent can also be very effective with short curl routes too once he continues to improve his timing with his recievers.

K, this last game I blame the slow start to getting punched in the mouth a lot

That would make any QB a bit woozy and inaccurate! But I do LOVE this kids ability to turn it on when we need it most. I just hope he survives all 16 games!
