Interesting side action during Rams game

Chris Brown at buffalobills.com is reporting (that Peter King reported) that Rams head coach Scott Linehan will get the boot if the Rams lose to the Bills on Sunday. From the soundbites that have been dribbling out of St Louis over the past week, it sounds like Linehan has lost the team. Could the team decide to dump Linehan by way of a shoddy (moreso than usual) performance?

I think some guys might try less hard than before

But the vast majority of the players understand that they are 1- Professionals and 2- that anything they do on the field is going to be seen by management and the next coach in and will be a big determiner of whether they are continuing in gainful employment. Basically, all 53 guys on that team are now auditioing for their jobs next year.

Totally agree

What we will see is some herculean efforts, some good efforts, and a few poor efforts, but what will be missing most of all is team unity, team chemistry. The only way I see the Bills losing is if they are careless and give up big plays and lots of turnovers.

I voted that they'd lay down

I think, based on comments from Holt, Jackson, and even Green, that some of the Rams’ best players want Linehan gone. If losing 1 game is the price to pay to achieve that end then so be it. It’s sort of the reverse of the situation with the Raiders. Those guys apparently really like Kiffin and played as well as they could in order to try to save his job. I can easily see some key Rams players taking it a little easier than normal, knowing that a loss to Buffalo is really a long term win for St Louis.

In any event, this is a huge distraction for the Rams—a team that really didn’t need anything else to go wrong. It’s also the fourth time in as many weeks that Buffalo will be facing a team with issues. The Seahawks were short their #1 and #2 receivers as well as a couple of key defender. The Jags were without their #1 and #2 receivers and their three interior offensive linemen. The Raiders didn’t have Fargas, McFadden was gimpy and Russell—while apparently healthy—really hasn’t shown he’s a starting caliber QB. Throw in the Al Davis-Lane Kiffin drama just for good measure. The Rams will be starting an injury plagued QB (Green) over one of the more productive QBs (Bulger) of the past few years. Add to that the speculation by several writers that Bulger won’t play for Linehan even if Green gets hurt and it could make for a really interesting Sunday.

The Bills have played a couple of decent teams this year, but none who were at full strength. While it’s great to be 3-0 (hopefully 4-0 by this time Sunday), is anyone else worried about how the team will fare against a good team that isn’t beset by injuries and/or drama? The Cardinals are an okay team and the Chargers are a pretty good one. Both are more or less healthy and functional franchises at the moment. I guess the good news is that even if San Diego cleans Buffalo’s clock the Bills don’t face another good and currently whole team (physically and organizationally) until Denver in week 16. (I count the Jets and Browns as okay teams at the moment, even though they have just 1 win between them.)

I think “curious” is a better word from my point of view. I don’t think we can take the Seattle or Jacksonville wins lightly – those are still good football teams, particularly the Jags – but there are different types of tests coming up in the next few games, INCLUDING the Rams. Should be interesting, and hopefully fun!

I forgot to add that Buffalo will face a good and most likely healthy team in the playoffs. If the Bills get pounded by the Chargers and Broncos it won’t bode well for their first playoff game this century. While my preseason prediction was 9-7 with no playoffs, the Brady injury and the unexpected (in May or whenever I settled on 9-7) win in Jacksonville has caused me to revise my prediction to 11-5. That should be good enough to win the division in a Brady-less year and possibly good enough to get a bye. (The AFC North isn’t getting a bye and the muddled AFC South has 10-6 division champ written all over it.) It would suck to see Buffalo make the playoffs and get bounced in that game.

Yes, I know, I know. The Rams are up next, but I’m sticking with my prediction of a dominating win against the Rams along the lines of 33-17. I’m looking for Edwards to get his first 300 yard game, due largely to shoddy tackling by the Rams’ secondary. (He almost got 300 last week against a pretty good secondary.) That same poor tackling in the secondary should allow Lynch to break at least one long run, putting him comfortably over 100 yards for the first time this season.

Tennessee’s winning that division, and winning it by 2 or more games…..unless Jacksonville really turns it on.

I think many people have discounted the Bills win in Jacksonville. That’s the exact same team that went to Indy the following week and beat the Colts. All of a sudden, the Jags are “in it”, though everyone already forgets that we beat them in their house in the heat….

What people say...

…is very often different from what they end up doing. Considering many of these players probably have performance incentives built into their contracts, I find it hard to believe that they will lay down that much in a real game.

true

I don’t expect anyone to lay down or not play hard. However, if a guy is dinged up, there’s a much greater chance he’ll say he can’t return. And if it starts poorly for them, they could all just let it go and not really care to get back into it. That’s why we need to start fast against them…

Over/under for Green is 175 yards

The under is a -120 while the over is a -110. For those of you who don’t gamble, that means that you have to bet $1.20 to win $1.00 if you’re betting that Green throws for less than 175 yards against Buffalo or bet $1.10 to win $1.00 if youre betting that Green throws for more than 175 yards. Basically, the oddsmakers (at least at Bodog) believe that it is more likely that Green will throw for less than 175 yards than that he’ll throw for more than 175 yards. Given that the very same oddsmakers have Buffalo winning by 8 points, they are counting on the Rams needing to throw the ball. So, either they think Buffalo’s pass defense is so awesome that the Rams can’t put up 176 yards passing or, perhaps more cynically, that Green will be on his way to the emergency room well before he throws for 175 yards.

As if he won't be fired anyway?

So let’s say somehow the Rams pull of the upset (which they won’t)…doesn’t not firing him just delay the inevitable? It’s not like the Rams have anything in common with the Giants of last year (I know Coughlin was on the chopping block at this time last year) and have a chance to turn this thing around and make a run.

My point is, this team has probably already “quit” on their coach (before this announcement) but I don’t think they would lay down and actually want to lose to get their coach fired because their coach is getting fired anyway, barring some near impossible miracle.

I dont know about players "laying down" or wanting to lose for that matter......

all that matters to me is the Bills play their game…….and if they can jump on the Rams quick and get them to fold early…..all the better…….but I dont care if its the Rams or the Cowboys….I just want that W at the end of the day.

Miss you Kotch......Love you Trent
