One of my dream signings

I have plenty of players on my list of guys I would love to see the Bills bring in, as I'm sure most of you do as well. But if I was the Bills GM, and lets be honest I'm probably as qualified as the guy who is technically the Bills GM, I would have one player at the top of my list this off-season; and that player is Eagles safety Brian Dawkins.

I know that most of you are saying that a safety shouldn't be the Bills top priority, and while I agree with that assesment I will say that everything else that Dawkins IS should be the Bills top priority. Dawkins is everything that the Bills thought they were getting when they drafted Donte Whitner. A leader, a tough, physical, play-maker that the Bills desperately need. Consider this: Over the last 4 years Dawkins has forced 15 fumbles, and in his 13 year NFL career he has NEVER had a single season were he has failed to record an interception. Consider the stats that K just showed us in his excellent post, 2008 was the 3rd time in the last 6 years that the Bills did not get one interception from a safety.

Now I fully understand that the reason Dawkins was free to make all of those plays is because the Eagles got tons of pressure on the quarterback, and unless the Bills can get that kind of QB pressure then Dawkins numbers won't be as good as they were on the Eagles. I'm not suggesting that the Bills sign Dawkins and only Dawkins and ingore the pass-rush issues on this team. What I am saying is that the Bills need a player of his caliber. A player who will be in the lineup every game (he's only missed 7 games the last 5 years, 6 in one year), a guy who will bring an agressive toughness that this team lacks and a play-making ability that we sorely need.

I've said my peace and made my plea.  What do you guys think?

Asking if you would like Brian Dawkins on your team is like...

Asking if you would like Peyton Manning. Who wouldn’t? He’s a huge difference maker and any team in the league would love to have him and that is why the Eagles would never let him leave.

Don't forget to pay the troll toll...

I wouldn't

I live in philadelphia and watch brian dawkins alot on TV (obviously). In the prime of his career, in 2005 when they were in the superbowl, he was a monster. He hasnt lost that mindset but his play has dropped considerable. He doesn’t have many years left, maybe 1 or 2 imo. This year he had a resurgence year but honestly I don’t see that continuing for a length of time. Personnally i would rather get adrian wilson

As much as I’d like to see Dawkins on the Bills, I don’t see how it’d work for either side. Dawkins is winding down his storied career and I just can’t see the Eagles letting him walk, anyways. If he did leave, why would he come to such a messed up situation like this? Why would he not sign with New England or San Diego or the Giants or someone who is going to be good for the next few years?

As for the Bills, is this signing going to do anything to improve us for the future? Isn’t it just a stopgap for 2-3 years?

I agree. I would love to add Dawkins he is a truly great HOF worthy type of player.

But he is 35 years old and has been in Philly for forever. I think you would really have to overpay a ton to get him to not only leave Buffalo, but to then pass on any interested contenders. I bet he signs a one year, 4 mil deal or something liek that to stay in Philly. I think Buffalo would probably have to give him something like 12 mil over 2 years or some huge amount of money.

Well the title of this post is “One of my dream signings”, I don’t think we are getting Julius Peppers, or Ray Lewis either But I can dream can’t I?

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

I voted no simply because he is 35 and we need to get younger not older IMO

Oh my gosh, the LAST thing we need to do is get younger. Our team is too young!

Really???

We have a ton of useless vets starting. They aren’t in their 30, most of them, but they aren’t young guy either….

I think the “useless vets that start” list is limited, in my mind, to Royal and Kelsay. Unless you count Josh Reed, Langston Walker, Aaron Schobel, Terrence McGee and Bryan Scott as “useless”.

i don't like it that much

He’s on the decline and while he can still play and I’d love for the Bills to have him I’d wager he’s going to cost more than he’s worth. His price will be reflective of his past achievements as opposed to his present value. Also, I’m tired of Lawyer Milloy’s and Troy Vincent’s. Let’s just let our secondary, which is young and very talented develop on its own. I honestly wouldn’t want B-Dawk to overshadow Whitner’s leadership.

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

If I remember correctly, he’s got a foundation in the community and is fairly entrenched in local charities/activities and is in the twilight of his career. Sounds nice in theory, but I doubt it. This guy is wired differently and money I don’t believe is an issue with this guy. Just a hunch …

Top 3 safety in the league

Ed Reed being first and Sanders probably 2nd or 3rd swap with Dawkins. You are right, Dawkins is everything we wish Whitner could be. I would hope Whitner has watched film of them 3, but it clearly has not translated to production

The Bills CAN win every game

Too Old!

Can you say LAwyer Milloy. Bills are still 2-3 years away, especially with next years schedule. Need younger players, and I can only imagine the contract.

by BuffaloWhiner on Jan 13, 2009 4:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Two different players

Dawkins is a much better player then Milloy was when the Bills got him.

Also as Brian siad above, the Bills need some veteran leadership on this team.

a 2 or 3 year deal for about 4 mil a year isn’t crazy.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

I hear your pain buddy!

We wasted an 8th pick on a 3rd rounder at best! Whitner is a huge disappointment, he lacks the aggressiveness & play making ability you’d expect from a SS.

I love the career that Dawkins has had but he is definitely too old in my view to bring him in. Although he has been healthy during his long and illustrious career, you have to think that injuries are just around the corner.

A guy that I REALLY like, a hard nosed big hitter is Atari Bigby. Unfortunately he is only a RFA and GB will most probably tender him. But I really like what this guy brings to the table! Bigby was undrafted so if he receives only the lower tender, we’d have a great chance of picking him up but I highly doubt it, GB has almost as much cap space as us and they certainly won’t risk loosing him, unless the new Defensive coaching staff have another direction in mind, who knows?

mayube with a little luck the new Defensive coordinator and his staff won’t

Nice dream if it were 2003

Too old and too slow

Sean Jones, Cleveland or Jermaine Philips, TB are better fits as both are SS and Philips especially as he plays in Tampa 2 already
