Sign TO?
Cowboys coach Wade Phillips and owner Jerry Jones will discuss releasing wide receiver Terrell Owens as the team looks to improve chemistry in its locker room, EPSN.com is reporting.
This is not an article advocating that, if this were to happen, the Bills should go out and break the bank signing Terrell Owens. However if the price is right, I think the Bills should consider it.
I don't think that the "right price" even has to be bargain-basement low. It's got just got to be enough that we aren't prohibiting ourselves from spending to get a premiere defensive talent, like a Suggs or a Peppers or a (I hesitate to mention him in the same breath) Berry.
Without a doubt, TO is an aging, whiny, clubhouse cancer. He makes enemies everywhere he goes. He could very well send Trent Edwards up the wall. He is the anti-Chris Kelsay. His teammates hate him, he's not "good in the lockerroom" and he cares a heck of a lot more about TO than he does about his team.
I believe he's exactly what this team needs.
- He's a red zone threat- The Bills don't have a dynamic, red zone threat, and when you settle for FG's, you lose football games. With 9+ TD's in every year but 2 since 1998, TO puts the ball in the endzone.
- He can be 1A to Evans's 1- I love Lee Evans. I think he's a great football player. However I don't like him as our #1 receiver, for reasons that Brian talked about earlier in the season. He's a 3-5 catches, 60-80 yards kind of guy. That's great production, but he's not a possession receiver. He's not the guy we hit on 3rd down. TO is. And maybe we call TO 1 and Evans 1A, because TO would like that, and I think Evans wouldn't care.
- He's tough- Yeah, the Cowboys folded this year. But TO didn't. When the team needed him the most, week 17, he had over 100 yards receiving. I think we all remember the super bowl he had with the Eagles while playing on 1 leg. I think the Bills were soft this year. TO wouldn't let that happen.
- Trent is smarter than Romo- This is pretty subjective on my part, but I believe Trent is smarter, and mentally tougher than Tony Romo. I think he could take TO's antics, of which I'm sure there will be some.
- Fire- Aside from being a brutally tough player, he quite simply doesn't tolerate mediocrity. I am willing to accept that I might be reading too much into Jauron's passive nature (and mediocre career record, his comfort with his DE's, with Anthony Thomas, his many 7-9 seasons), but it seems that the coach isn't going to get on his players for being average. TO wouldn't accept that. Plus, you'd get the added bonus of seeing your frustrations vindicated when he yapped at somebody on the sideline (tell me you don't want to see jauron look angry, just once!).
Obviously there are a lot of reasons not to do it. Spending on a 35 year old WR is rarely a good idea (though signing a 33 year old James Lofton certainly was). His intangibles (which I'm suggesting would help the Bills) are a main reason the Cowboys are thinking about dumping him. I think the fact that he could drive Edwards up the wall is a legitimate problem.
But at some point the Bills need to just go for it if they're going to be the team we all want them to be. We've had solid drafts, but we've fallen woefully short on finding impact talent. If it doesn't work out, you cut him, pay the signing bonus, and forget about it.
I think never taking a risk would be a much, much bigger mistake.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

if T.O. is cut...
I’ll be shocked if anyone signs him…imagine him with a developing QB in Edwards. NOT A CHANCE do I want him anywhere near here.

remember that there's always the raiders
i’m expecting a 2011 raiders squad to have mike vick passing to TO, maurice clarett and travis henry in the backfield, and pacman and tank johnson anchoring the d.

i guess you're right
I should know not to be suprised after anything Al Davis does anymore after trying to set up an all-ACL team with Kelly, Bush, Walker, and Culpepper at one point.

Actually, depending on how Plax does with the law....
Look for the Giants to make a play for him on a 1-2 year Prove it contract. He still commands double teams and they need that if Plax is in jail.
As for our team, to young, to impressionable, and he is wrong type of guy for DJ to try and coach, look what happened to Wade! Think DJ would do better?!?!?!?!?!
Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

My thought exactly. He’s a perfect fit for Al “I owe Ralph” Davis. Let him be a festering pimple for the most dysfunctional team in sports.

Somewhat intruiging but no thanks...
Those are well thought out and very legitimate arguments for possibly taking a chance on T.O. but beyond all the arguments against there is the undeniable fact that a younger, faster T.O. surrounded by much better casts in S.F., Philly and Dallas has not been able to win the big one. I know that for us Bills fans just making the playoffs would be a huge upgrade but ultimately it’s all about the S.B. and he cannot get us there and worst of all the psychological damage he would leave in wake on our young QB, HB and receiving corps would long outlive whatever good feelings we might have from seeing the Bills in the playoffs with his help (if he gets us there). I appreciate you putting out there for discussing I am sure that it was bound to happen but for what it’s worth…. it isn’t.

Someone on another site
while dicussing this subject posted that at least watching TO ripping Jauron on the sideline would make the upcoming 2009 disaster entertaining.
Gotta agree

my only response to that is that
if cut from dallas, I think most teams in the league won’t want to touch him with a 10 foot pole. He might want to, just because it’ll be the only option available to him…that’s the only way i can figure it.

I am with Brian
TO will want a Super Bowl Ring – the one prize that has eluded him his whole career.
That will not happen in the next 2-3 years in Bffalo, so why would he want to come here.
Funny how no team wins the big one with TO

id
do it in a heartbeat for one year…..TO is a unique talent and would be a stud here….of course it will never happen. I’m sick of the Class A citizens in Buffalo, and it doesn’t matter cuz ie. Marshawn bringing booz into bars, driving under the influence, and hitting ladies…….TO doesn’t do that, he is just a pain in the ass on the field…..So I’d rather have ego than a guy that is out doing stupid stuff off-the-field even if he is a hell of a head case. One year, he could make a team real good

Let me just say that if TO was unhappy about targets and offensive production in San Fran, Philly and Dallas he won;t last two weeks before he freaks out over our lack of offense.

Are you nuts?
This guy is the worse parasite there is. I must say that he would be in for one hell of a rude awakening because our team of young high character players are pretty tight and he would not fit in and they certainly would not let him get away with the crap this guy puts out. Plus, he drops so many passes… I don’t want this guy at all!

I would welcome TO and so would you!
Come on guys, would it really be all that bad?? I would love to have the athletic freak on the Bills, and IF we did sign him (which we wont) Im sure you guys wouldnt be tossing and turning over it. The Bills need a little excitement. our team leader is Donte Whitner…what did he do this year? Exactly. We dont have a team leader, we dont have a winning record, we didnt win a divisional game. We are at an all time low. How much worst could it be if T.O. was a Bill? Would he ruin our team? I think Ralph already did that.
