Rex Ryan new head man for Jets

Hadnt seen this mentioned yet on site. It's kinda a big deal I think. I know everyone is all about talking draft and everything which is all well and good. However when one of our AFC EAST sisters makes a move like this kinda affects us too.

I am wondering what everyone thinks of Ryan becoming the new head coach?

I actually dont think its thats good of a signing by the JETS I have a feeling Rex will turn out to be like his Dad.......great as a coordinator, not so great as a head man. Which works out great for the Bills.

What say you?

I like Rex Ryan the coach. But he’s definitely in a terrible situation. Mike Tannenbaum and Woody Johnson are not intelligent individuals – Tannenbaum in particular – and they have no future at the QB position. (Kellen Clemens? Please.) Unless they answer that QB question, the Jets are nosediving into mediocrity.

totally agree

Clemens isn’t very good and if they keep schottenheimer on as OC they are done.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

The Ravens had squat at the QB position until this past season. I think he’ll do really well, as long as he hires someone competent enough to coach the O. I wouldn’t say the Bills are out of the inferiority woods just yet.

Rex is aggressive

while DJ is passive

not a very good combo for Bills fans.

but we’ll have to see what happens – his “D” will be spot on thats for sure.

Trent must do much much better against 3-4.

good thing their “O” isn’t in the greatest position – see qb

you think rex is gonna run a 3-4 there?

he mostly ran a 4-3 with B-more

He mixed looks. That’s kind of his forte. He’ll run a base 3-4, though, because the Jets have solid personnel for that scheme. Their defense should actually be pretty good next year, especially if Ryan can get anything out of Vernon Gholston.

thanks Brian – i’m expecting a 3-4 out of him and everyone in our divison will be 3-4 (save us).

as Brian said he does mix his looks a lot and he will use his players to their strengths. they will have a very good “D”. i’m hoping their “O” just goes to crap because hopefully Favre will retire and then they really don’t have a lot (clemens).

You can’t really translate how their defense might do just because Rex Ryan is their head coach. He might be a terrible manager and the Jets could be awful. See ( Cam “Cam” Cameron, Miami, 2007). Also See (Brian “Offensive Guru” Billick, Baltimore, earlier this decade), (Jon “I hope my face doesn’t stick this way” Gruden, TB) . Aggressive play can blow up in your face as much as anything. I think between this hiring (no experience as Head Coach) and their imminent personnel disaster, the Jets are in for a decade of suck to catalog with their other decades of suck. They totally ruined their future with their splurges last offseason (Faneca, Jenkins, especially Favre). I think in the next couple years Jets fans will be looking back fondly on the Pennington years. At least the Bills haven’t done that yet, imagine if we’d signed Favre? There are a lot of teams for us to worry about, I don’t think the NYJ will be one of them. I’m curious to see how New England performs next year with key losses in Personnel and OC.

Well I wouldn’t write either of those teams off.

Especially NE – its a quarterbacks league and an ACL injury for a QB isn’t nearly as bad as a WR/CB or any other position really. Plus they just win – until they show otherwise – they are a 10 win team at least. I mean they lost Tom friggin Brady and still won 11 games. Now they are going to franchise Cassell and get a first or something ridiculous for him – their a good team.

Can’t write the Jets off either – they are showing they want to win – they have good pieces that will attract more FA’s. Frankly we dont’ know anything about Ryan as a HC – but we do know that he fields a very very good and aggressive defense. Based off of this I would make the assumption that he will try to win games – instead of the Buffalo way – try not to lose them.

I expect their D to be more opportunistic and tougher to play against. Their O is a mess though.

Great hire by the Jets

Rex Ryan was who I realistically wanted the Bills to hire (assuming Cowher and Schottenheimer would demand better situations to come out of retirement) had Buffalo actually cared about winning and fired the worst coach in the league. I wouldn’t worry about their not having a QB of the future either. As average as Favre was last year, he’s still better than 65% of the starting QBs out there and nobody seems to have depth at the position. When Favre goes, they’ll find someone else because the Jets want to win above all else. That’s not case upstate, unfortunately.

The passing of the torch is finally complete.

there's a difference

between wanting to win and knowing how to build a winner. I don’t think Tannenbaum has the background to field a winner. what it will come down to is how good of a evaluator Ryan is and how much pull he’ll have in making personnel decisions.

by gatornation on Jan 20, 2009 1:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d take wanting to win at this point…..

It’s not like our franchise knows how to build a winner either. At least the Jets seem to care about trying to put a winner on the field.

Your implication is that the Bills don't care about fielding a winner

and I think that’s totally off. For anyone to argue that Jauron, Wilson, Brandon or anyone else in this organization didn’t care about winning is ridiculous.

I’m basing my hypothesis on concrete actions and results. You’re basing your hypothesis on a lot of fluffy hopes and dreams and such. I don’t think you get to call me ridiculous. Going 0-6 in the division in year three of Jauron’s hold on this team and bringing back the entire coaching staff speaks volumes about the mindset of this franchise. Wilson and Brandon DON’T care about winning; they care about turning a profit which this franchise has done year in and year out for a half century. I think Wilson would like to win, but it’s not all that important to him. If he truly cared about winning, he’d scrap this loser no matter the cost of the buyout. As it is, business is fine under Jauron so why eat the contract?

The passing of the torch is finally complete.

by Benjamin Salem on Jan 20, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

fact is we know nothing of the contract. there could be a clause in there that stipulated at the time he signed that whatever record much be reached or an opt out clause was in there for the the team.

For all we know Ralph just wanted DJ to stay and the contract and money had nothing to do with it.

now that i think of it – i’m sure this is possibly correct because Ralph said it wasn’t a difficult decision for him to make – just everyone else in the front office

Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

by J2 on Jan 20, 2009 2:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

First, I didn't state a hypothesis. I argued against yours.

As far as Wilson and Brandon, I can’t argue that their job isn’t to keep the Bills profitable. Face the facts, though. If the Bills didn’t turn a profit, they wouldn’t be here to win or lose. But to say that winning isn’t a part of that philosophy is off base. Last year they sold the second-most season tickets in history largely because there was hope of winning. They know that the teams that make the most money are the teams that are winning so your entire argument is based on the fact that they can make money by losing. If they wanted more money then they would want to win.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 20, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Um..pretty sure I faced the facts long ago...

Wilson knows there are so many rubes out there that he sell tickets no matter the oproduct he puts on the field. Can you think of any serious franchise that would sit back and watch the collapse we saw last year and would endorse an encore? 0-6 in the division 3 years after Donahoe left. How is that acceptable? It’s acceptable because the rubes keep buying hope (and record setting amounts of tickets). Winning doesn’t matter to OBD and bringing back Jauron is Exhibit A. Not being satisfied with 9-7 under Mangini is exhibit A that mediocrity is unacceptable to the Jets. I don’t really think that’s up for debate and Wilson’s creepy old man interviews this year only serve to confirm that he doesn’t care.

I think Wilson should bring Al Davis in to coach the team. Just to up the creep factor. Throw in the ghost of Lamar Hunt and we’ll be all set.

I wouldn't use the Jets and their knee jerk reaction as proof they aren't willing to settle for mediocrity

They sepnt way too much on free agents who supposedly their coach didn’t want. They sacrificed their future by trading draft picks. They hire an unproven coordinator as their new coach and have Brett Favre/Kellen Clemons as their QB. Exactly how are the Jets built to win?

Ryan will do wonders

for that Jets Defense in the 3-4 and he will bring toughness to that team. The Bills could have used a guy like this. Someone who has passion for the game and gets the most out of their players. This shouldn’t sound familiar because we haven’t seen this since Marv stopped coaching. I wish we had brought Ryan on as our head coach, maybe then the players would be held accountable for SOMETHING. The Bills passive way of coaching has not only caught up with them as witnessed by the whole team falling a part at the end of the season, but it has formulated a very negative, black cloud over this franchise. HOW IN THE WORLD DOES RALPH SLEEP AT NIGHT?? Juaron doesn’t get the most out of anyone and you allow the guy to stay another year? Ralph you are a businessman, start acting like one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The team actually rallied near the end of the season....

after the horrible stretch of games early they beat a Denver Broncos team at home fighting for their playoff lives. They never gave up or mailed it in.

Get a grip, man

This team went 1-4 down the stretch. They absolutely mailed it in. To call that a rally is laughable. In the finale, they basically ran out the clock and punted twice in the last six minutes down less than two scores. The only thing on their minds at that point was getting to the golf courses. The team did the same in ‘07 sleepwalking through their last two games against the Giants and Eagles after being eliminated by Cleveland. They managed just a TD in Baltimore on New Year’s Eve ‘06 after being eliminated the week before. Thisnteam absolutely mails it in at the end of the season…if beating a ragged Denver team is supposed to block the rest of their pathetic efforts out of everyone’s memory, it’s not working on me. Effort on this team’s part is much closer to lacking than it is to being some sort of attribute as you’re trying to paint it.

The passing of the torch is finally complete.

I totally agree on this point

This team definitely mailed it in against NE. Other than Fred Jackson, they looked like they were counting down the seconds until they could get out of there.

It’s absolutely pathetic how this team finishes. Yet another reason I can’t stand Milquetoast Jauron.

awesome...

Jauron is “milquetoast” to a tee…the most telling part of how Jauron and his team played the 4th quarter of the season finale is in the fact that nobody seemed to notice or care. That’s Jauron’s greatest crime in his Buffalo tenure- he’s sucked all the life out of this franchise- sucked it completely dry. Check out the drive charts from that 4th quarter of the finale:

http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/playbyplay?gameId=281228002

They basically ran out the clock down by 13 in a game where they had a chance to knock a division rival (the same team that has owned them for a decade, was caught cheating against us, ran up the score against us in our own stadium on national tv last year, etc.) out of the playoffs. There’s no way anyone could have watched the same team I did last December and seriously laud the team’s effort and fighting spirit- at least not with a straight face.

The passing of the torch is finally complete.

by Benjamin Salem on Jan 20, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The last 2 plays of the game were pathetic. Just run it up the middle to get it over with and onto the offseason. It was even as if Jauron fully expected to be fired.

I can’t stand the way this team plays normally, but in December it’s been even worse.

OK guys, I get it

You hate Jauron and by extension Turk and his play calls.

But the drive charts you are referencing is when they were giving the ball to their hot hand that day and the only guy you say was “trying”, Fed Jackson. You are actually complaining that they were giving it to Jackson, the last two plays of the game notwithstanding. I don’t agree with everything the Bills have done and I don’t agree with all of the playcalls.

Salem, you mention that in ‘06 they were held to a TD against Baltimore something that happens to many teams against their defense. You can’t put that poor offensive showing on mailing it in unless you think every team mails it in against Baltimore. You also say that in ‘07 they looked bad against the Giants, the team that was in the middle of a streak that tookm them to a Supoer Bowl Championship. Weren’t they supposed to look bad against that team? I know other teams did in the playoffs.

Now I can’t state for a fact that they didn’t mail it in or that they weren’t playing 100% but neither can you. They beat a borderline playoff team who was fighting for their livers in their own building in week 16 of the season. It’s obvious they had to be trying just a little. Trash them for Week 17 but don’t use their record as an indication of effort. We know they were trying in the middle of the season when they tanked, too.

When you have Juaron as your coach, your only hope of a pass rush went down in week five and you don’t employ a reliable third down receiver, I don’t think Simply Sleep would even do the trick!
