Bills D-Line coach Kollar going to the Texans

The Buffalo News and BuffaloBills.com are reporting that Buffalo Bills defensive line coach Bill Kollar will be assuming the same role for the Houston Texans.  Since it is a lateral move the Bills allowed him to leave.  Kollar was one of two coaches to interview for his new position; the other was former Lions head coach and current Bears defensive line coach Rod Marinelli.

I am not crushed by the departure as the Bills' defensive line has not over-achieved by any means, but what bugs me a little is this: if they are willing to let him go, why not get rid of him yourself earlier and maybe take a shot at Marinelli.  Seems typical of Dick Jauron - reactive instead of proactive.

This FanPost was written by a registered user of Buffalo Rumblings. Its views do not necessarily reflect the views of Rumblings' editorial staff, but are just as valued as our own.

LOL wow. Jauron can be bashed at every turn possible; it’s really quite amazing.

Yawn. Kollar’s a good coach, but he’s not the be-all, end-all authority of coaching the defensive line. Neither is Rod Marinelli for that matter.

Looks like we’re getting a perverted form of a coaching search after all…

Could you imagine the posts that would go up if Rod Marinelli was hired as a coach for this team? If you think Jauron gets bashed a lot now, good grief.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

I actually wouldn’t have minded Marinelli as DL coach. Head coach material? No f’in way! But he’s still a pretty solid coach. He did coach a quality DL in Tampa for a number of years. Oh well, Good Luck to him in Chicago….

It’s the same idea of wanting Cam Cameron as OC last year. He was a terrible HC, but is a good assistant coach….

Lets just see what OBD does regarding this. If they promote within (anyone have any ideas?) I won’t be happy.

hopefully they go after someone on a playoff team with proven results over a period of time.

or i’ll get a call and be there next week coaching – dont’ fret – i’ll cut Kelsay as my first order of business

It’s a DL coach. I doubt he has any say over moves like that. Position coaches barely get say about who gets playing time or makes the final roster or anything like that.

Exactly, there isn’t anyone for the Bills to promote. It’s a position coach that left and position coaches rarely have a #2 who could step up. I expect someone who is currently unemployed, or somebody from the college game to get the job.

Didn’t that happen like 3 times last year? Schonert replaces Fairchild… Van Pelt replaces Schonert… Kugler replaces McNally…

AVP was offensive quality control who was a QB.

Frank Reich became QB coach in Indy with the same progression. He’s not a #2 QB coach but he is on the staff.

Schonert replaced a coordinator, not a position coach.

O Line does have an assistant. I am surprised D Line doesn’t.

by J2 on Jan 20, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Schonert was a position coach who got bumped to a coordinator so that doesn’t count. Van Pelt was a weird situation that the quality control guy just happened to be a former QB who could be promoted. But I guess Van Pelt counts anyways and Kugler is a great example too. I’ll say it like this then, Most teams only have 3-4 coaches who are below a position coach in authority so it is rare that a team actually has someone familiar with a spot that opens up. DeMontie Cross who you mentioned is one of two guys who could come in and be a position coach (and probably only at linebackers). Ray Brown, the assistant OL coach is the other. So I think it is just coincidence that Buffalo has been able to promote guys from within to position coach jobs.

A chance to coach Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye, and Travis Johnson or coach Aaron Schobel, Ryan Denney, Chris Kelsay and friends. Ha, I’m sure that was a tough choice.

Maybe throw in a “The Bills’ D-Line overachieves every time they end a play upright with an opponent within 5 yards” hahaha. He’s just a position coach, so things won’t noticeably change. I actually don’t think that Kollar and the DL have underacheived in his tenure. I think they just stink this much. Aaron Schobel is basically a career overacheiver and had his best sack total under Kollar when he had 14 a few seasons ago. Nobody is going to make Kelsay look good and Denney is what he is. Kollar has had his most success in the league going into situations with veterans and coaxing a little more out of them then they were giving before (players on Atlanta and STL both had slight bumps in production after Kollar arrived and Buffalo kind of did too) so I understand why he wants to go coach some young vets instead of an old vet (Schobel), second year players (Ellis, Bryan) and some rookies (I hope).

If I were a good position coach with any other team besides a few deadbeat teams I would think twice about coming to the Bills. They don’t pay crap, DJ is on a short leash, and my tenure may only last one year. That would be a big consideration for me. It is a good move for Kollar. The Texans will probably take a DE with their first pick. And, knowing the Bills, Kollar probably got a significant pay raise.

many position coaches and coordinators only have one year to prove anythign anyways

THink about some other teams like New Orleans. The defense was bad this year so they are getting a new D Coordinator (Gregg WIlliams). Position coaches are often scapegoats for the head coach. Just last year the Auburn OC was fired and the offense played no better so Tommy T got canned. He prolonged his firing by firing the OC. Just how it works in the biz.

Kollar......................

Really?? Just like that, everyone is worried that this guy is a big loss to the team. Not at all. Kollar was a good coach, with decent knowledge and decent enthusiasm but he isn’t anything over the top. Kollar was WAY over paid for his position and he made some bad choices as well. Simply look at our DT position before Stroud got to town. TERRIBLE. Plus, why in God’s name would you give Kelsay a lengthy extension when he is yet to prove ANYTHING?? Well I know to get that extension, your position coach has to have RAVE reviews about you. Look what Kelsay has done for us = NOTHING. Thanks Bill, but I hope your replacement lights a fire under some of our current personnel.

You can’t blame Kollar for the lack of talent on our DL. And blaming the DL coach for giving a ridiculous extension to a bad DE is a bit absurd, IMO. Maybe Kollar said he wouldn’t mind Kelsay back, but it’s not like he’s the one who decided $6M per season was a good idea.

Come one Brian! It’s not the best vote of confidence in our team. Hopefully we told him to go look for another job instead of him walking on his own. Because that is just embarassing. It is basically saying that I like Houston’s d-line better and I like their potential for success more.

Of course I’m not numb to it, nor am I brushing it off. We didn’t tell him to look for a new job; he did it of his own accord and we let him walk when he found one he liked. NFL is a quirky place. All you have to do is get into the playoffs and anything can happen. So next year while many predict 3-6 wins, nobody knows. Since when have the Bills ever met expectations? I hope that every single Bills player takes 2008 personally, and that the infusion of FA’s and draft picks lights a fire under these guys. Guys need to lose their jobs if they ain’t producing. That would certainly light a fire under these guys if Kelsay, Royal, Fowler/Preston, Simpson. If some of those guys found themselves on the street in 2009

If the Cardinals can do it, why not us?

I don’t want to be a downer, but the Cardinals can emerge from nowhere and Buffalo can’t because they have some superstars. Guys like Warner, Fitzgerald, Boldin, Dansby, Darnell Dockett and Adrian Wilson is a core of special players that Buffalo just doesn’t have. Buffalo has a core of good players like Evans, Lynch, Edwards, Peters, Stroud, Schobel etc …… It just isn’t the same. Buffalo needs game changing talent and will be a mediocre team until they find it.

So next year while many predict 3-6 wins, nobody knows.

Are people really going to predict 3 wins? I hope people do predict 3 wins so we can prove them all wrong with a 4th consecutive 7-9 campaign!

Guys need to lose their jobs if they ain’t producing

Buffalo did replace Fowler, Royal (essentially) and Simpson as starters. I don’t think any of the Bills who might get cut like Kelsay or those guys would actually end up unemployed next year. They are all rosterable if nothing else.

Perhaps a silly question, but would Kollar know who the Bills are targeting at DE (or other position) for the 11th pick? Could kind of affect draft decisions/trades/fakes with Houston at 15.

A Personnel Evaluation

Jauron: How would you evaluate Chris Kelsay’s season?
Kollar: I gave him an ‘A’ for effort.
Jauron: But he only had 2 sacks…
Kollar: …with a clear lane to the quarterback!
Jauron: We’d clearly wish he had 20 sacks, he only had 2, that’s where it’s at and we’ll move forward.
Kollar: If only I had some real talent to work with…
Jauron: I would recommend Detroit or Chicago.
Kollar: Which team drafted Mario Williams a few years back?
Jauron: …
Kollar: Houston! You’re a good man, Dick. I will always respect you. Thank you. Good-bye.

Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.

Not to be cruel, but...

Yeah, that is a silly question. Because if Koller knows who the Bills are targeting with the 11th pick, then that would mean the Bills’ braintrust has a clue about what to do with the pick.

Rumor has it that Jauron was about to throw the red flag to block Koller from leaving, but was told Koller had already arrived in Houston and it was too late.

It is sad that this guy wasn’t good enough to retain, yet they were going to keep him anyway.
But we shouldn’t be surprised.

This season has been the worst feeling ever provided by our Bills...a feeling of humiliation. Starting out 5-1 and finishing in last place has been a very cruel tease.

Marshawn Lynch plays here. That’s why!!!

Yeah, it’s all dollars. Buffalo fans might hate Dick Jauron, but players like him. The team has been bad, but does 7-9 really make this team an undesirable place to be? Buffalo will never be anyone’s first choice, but I think the organization is viewed as good enough that most players wouldn’t turn down a huge contract offer here to play for less somewhere else.

Oh, I get it...

Marshawn could do all the driving for those new players to show them the sites around Buffalo.

A liitle off topic but

if the Bills sign Julius Peppers it will make the new D-Line coach life much better. Good ridens to Kollar.

we dont need him

and this means nothing. It was a lot of things. Better situation in Houston, better weather, better everything.

I’m absolutely shocked at the amount of turnover in the coaching ranks of the NFL, especially this off-season. It is amazing at how man coaches from the 16th or 17th on the todem pole, to HC’s, OC’s, and DC’s to how many shift scenery. What a profession. How do you keep your family together, be a father, a husband, and get your job done? All the scrutiny the team takes every week based on winning or losing. What a profession. At the highest levels there is money, fame, respect, but there are definitely difficulties that many don’t think of.

Well................

Here it is guys. Have you noticed who actually coaches these guys on the field? Better yet, have you EVER played football Who evaluates these guys and there talents?? Tell me where exactly the general manager of player personnel gets his analization of his players??? THEIR POSITION COACH.

  • I WAS A SUN DEVIL – You tell me what position I played at 6’4"

And you are right, he cannot control the talent he has been given. But man Kollar has done nothing with our defensive lineman. Point in case, (I hate giving away free info) the Bills D-lineman are some of the worst in the league because they simply have and use only RAW techniques.

From watching the games and practices.

Are you talking about yourself of Terrell Suggs, I’m confused.

The truth is that everywhere Kollar has gone, DLs have performed better upon his arrival. He went to a Super Bowl with both Atlanta and St. Louis. Even the Bills saw an immediate increase in production when Schobel, Kelsay and Denney went from a combined 18 sacks in 2005 to 26 sacks in 2006. He is a solid line coach and certainly someone who doesn’t deserve the blame for Buffalo’s pass rushing failures.

Going with anything that didn’t see the field considering that Scout.com has no Rochester, NY players on the ASU roster from 2002-2006

Reading into this one could deduce...

If Kolar wants out it might be because next season is shaping up to be more of the same. If Kolar knew that the Bills were intending to target a big splash player or targeting a 1st round DE Stud then maybe he stays? Knowing that you have to do miracles with guys like Kelsey must be discouraging to say the least!

When an assistant leaves like this, does he leave with the knowledge of who we intend to target both FA and Draft? Given that he was under contract there was no reason to hide it from him but letting him leave from “said” contract leaves them in an awkward situation doesn’t it?

At this point of the year the position coaches are evaluating our current staff

They have not looked at the possible incomings yet. That is what the month of February is for.

He actually received a promotion, at least in title to “Assistant Head Coach / Offensive Line”. Also, he has friends there. That’s it. It really has nothing to do with Mario Williams et al. That’s bonus, but not the reason. Has more to do with the title change, friends, and probably the weather than anything else.

From Chris Brown over at BB.com
D-line coach replacement candidate?
By Chris Brown – Posted January 21st, 2009
After doing some digging I haven’t found too many defensive line or assistant defensive line coaches currently working in the league with connections to members of Buffalo’s staff. One that I did find was Oakland defensive tackles coach Don Johnson.

Johnson worked with Bills defensive coordinator Perry Fewell in Chicago in 2005, where he coached the defensive line with great success. Tommie Harris made the Pro Bowl (2005) during Johnson’s time with the Bears and then rookie Mark Anderson had 12 sacks, while Adewale Ogunleye had 10 (2006).

Johnson is also a New Jersey native, so coming back east closer to his roots could also be a positive.

I’m not saying I know he’s a candidate for the job, but in light of the unstable coaching situation in Oakland, the fact that a defensive line job would be a step up from his current position and that he’d be working under a coordinator with whom he’s worked before, it’s not unreasonable to think he’d at least be a candidate to replace Bill Kollar.

We could do worse than this guy. Plus his name is Don Johnson!!!! So many Miami Vice references.

Don Johnson joined Ron Rivera on San Diego’s staff yesterday as their defensive line coach. Nice digging, Brownie.

Give Brownie a break.

He probably had to consult his inner circle about doing the research and none of them could agree if Johnson signed or not.

I feel bad for Brown. He’s employed by one of the most chaotic franchises in the NFL, and he can’t even speak his mind. You know he’s got things to say that he can’t…

Agreed.

Everything is filtered. Even when he says something negative you can tell that a) the front office okay’d it and b) it won’t really upset the apple cart. He could be a really, really good journalist if he wasn’t under the Bills umbrella.

Well at least he keeps bringing up the need for a pass rusher at #11!
