Jason Peters skipping Pro Bowl
The source isn't great but according to this short article, Peters will skip the Pro Bowl and is being replaced by Jake Long of the Dolphins.
Many of us didn't believe that Peters deserved to go to the Pro Bowl anyway, but skipping it hurts anyway. He was the only person we had there and it would have been nice to see him there. Oh well.
Hopefully this doesn't have anything to do with his contract and really is about an injury. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he miss last years too?

BB.com covered this too. That’s probably a more reliable source. :)

I’m pretty sure he did miss last year as well.
I don’t think this has anything to do with his wanting an extension, it’s not like playing in this game would benefit the Bills in any way.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Last year it was the groin
This year they’re saying he had knee surgery.

But but but but but..... THIS is why they play the game!!!
How DARE he skip out on it, the bum!!!! /sarcasm
Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

Yes, he skipped last year because of the injury.
And I can’t imagine anyone ever skipping the Pro Bowl because of a contract dispute. Hell, I doubt the Bills even want him there.

the pro bowl is a joke anyways.........
no need to have an “all-star” game for football……name em ALL-PRO’s give a handy dandy lil award and tell em to hit up the golf course.

Think a lot of them skip the Pro Bowl now?
wait until they move it to Florida!

When is that happening? I was under the assumption that the NFL was playing the Pro Bowl in the Super Bowl city of the year the week prior to the big game starting in 2010, when both games will be played in Miami.

PFT did a write up on it a while back. I think Florio was on to something when he wrote that the league is likely using it as a bargining chip for the new collective bargining agreement. Basically, the league is ‘taking away’ something the players like (paid trip to Hawaii) and will require the players to cave on some point in the negotiations to ‘get it back’. As it was formulated, the game will be the week before the Super Bowl which means quite a few players named to it won’t be able to attend. (Catch-22: Are the teams in the Super Bowl because they have so many Pro Bowlers or do they have so many Pro Bowlers because their teams did well enough—and got so much national exposure—to get to the Super Bowl?)

Thanks for the info
I wondered what was behind that decision.

Can we all agree the guy is injury-prone? This will fuel the same approach by the organization as last off-season. If he feels his unhealthy enough to participate in the game, i’m sure they’ll want to have clear access to his off-season rehab. You know he’ll still be in Hawaii for the week of the game though.

Peters has missed 4 games in 4 years. He’s hardly injury prone. Everybody skips the Pro Bowl, it’s no big deal at all.

It’s a big deal to Peters. It’s the greatest accomplishment a player can have, according to him.

Maybe making the Pro Bowl is an accomplishment, but playing in it isn’t really a big deal. Peters will probably be in Hawaii partying around with the other players, but nobody actually wants to go out and play in a stupid fake game where nobody really tries their hardest.

Maybe Marvin Harrison will also be there to assault some more fans.

Yeah, exactly. As long as “Pro Bowl” appears on his resume, he’s cool.

Agreed.
It doesn’t matter who plays in the Pro Bowl. It’s the vote in that counts for things like recognition, ego, contract leverage, Hall of Fame consideration (unfortunately), etc.
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.

scrap the Pro Bowl in favor of
a skills contest weekend. This would be fun for the players and the fans. Every receiver that gets in should compete in a bunch of awesome skills drills where they can gain bragging rights for jumping the highest, having the best hands, etc. And do it at every position. That would much better than a fake game.

You mean like the Skills Challenge that they already hold...
and already no one watches?

Hey, I watched it once. It was terrible.

I watched Moorman compete...
on tape delay. And then I gave him a hard time about it. The only thing the players care about are the sprint and the kickers contest. Everything else they kinda just go through the motions.

Any of the Worlds Strongest Man competiton events would be cool. I would love to see who could drag a Bus further Brian Urlacher or Steve Hutchinson.

I actually would watch something like that. Anything that really puts the players pride on the line, something that really causes them to compete their hardest (like they do in the sprint) would we something worth watching.
by kaisertown on Jan 24, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, if they stole a bunch of stuff from Strongest Man
I would watch in a heartbeat, I mean if my 62 year old mom loves watching World’s Strongest Man, can you imagine the number of people who would tune in to watch their favorite NFL players do it? It would do very well in the ratings, and I think alot of the players would do it because it would be fun.
I told the witch doctor that I was in love with the Buffalo Bills, and instead of telling me to say "Oh eeh oh oh ah, ting tang walla walla wing bang" in order to make me feel better he told me to buy a gun and end it.

And the odds of the NFLPA or teams signing off on any of these?
Holy hell, if teams put clauses into their contracts that say players can’t play basketball could you imagine what they would say to puling a bus or tossing a weight or stone?
by twoeightnine on Jan 24, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah the NFLPA would never go for it.
But it would be great to watch,… but then it would be cool to see them wrestle bears too.

that Peters is skipping the Pro Bowl. I too think that they should be given a bonus and told to hit the golf course. AMEN. No injuries. Tell me what business likes to put their clients at risk for something totally meaningless?
