Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

The thinking in some circles is Wilson opted to bring back Jauron not because he can't afford to honor a multi-million-dollar buyout, but because he (and his 31 partners) can't afford to create the perception that Wilson can afford to buy out Jauron.

The owners want to persuade the players to take less money under the next Collective Bargaining Agreement. If one of the supposedly poorest franchises has the wherewithal to fire a coach to whom it has just given a three-year contract, then maybe things aren't as bad as the league is making them out to be.

pretty ridiculous

if you ask me. What this says if true, is that its what I already know. Its all about the almighty dollar. But why the hell does Wilson care bout money, when he is ultimately going to be able to feed the next 5 generations of Wilson’s 100x over? He runs it like a business. Just about the bottom line. They have X amount of dollars to spend. And that’s what they spend. They are never in the top 5 of the draft, so they don’t dole out the mega-contracts, which has protected their salary cap number.

I’m really flabergasted about everything. I wish the Bills would hold a press conference here and address some issues. We have no clue what’s going on at OBD. Very secretive those “inner-circle” guys are

You’re stuck on just the Bills, though. If Florio is accurate, Ralph is essentially working for the 31 other NFL owners, too. All of them want to drive down player prices in the new CBA.

yeah

I just don’t see that. Ralph taking one for who? The other 31 owners? It just doesn’t seem to fit for me. I see where he is coming from, I’m sure Ralph wants the best CBA in play possible to ensure the long term viability of the Bills, and keeping up a huge chunk of revenue sharing, and less money to the players is key in that aim

actually the other owners know Jauron isnt a challenge to any of them......

so they know with Jauron aboard there is one less NFL team to worry about winning the whole shebang lol

Once again, Ralph WILL act for the good of the league

Did you know at one point he also owned 25% of the Raiders during the AFL days, in direct violation of the league policy since he already owned 100% of the Bills? He did it so the league wouldn’t fold, and he ended selling it once they were solvent. I CAN see Wilson doing this for the NFL, afterall, he was one of the driving forces behind it, and if his family won’t take the Bills over, then his legacy stands on what he did for the NFL itself.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

by WABillsfan on Jan 6, 2009 1:25 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He never owned them.

He loaned the owners money. The same thing with the Pats.

If that's the case

Ralph should have them build a new stadium in Buffalo

K – in Clarence – right between Rochester and Buffalo on the 90 where the speedway is. That would be a great area as it would be basically right between Buffalo, Rochester and closer for Toronto.

Regarding this – I highly doubt this article is legit. That would mean that owners would be telling other owners how to manage their teams. I doubt this factored in at all.

They do need to look into a rookie salary cap – especially for the top 15 picks.

Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

Wouldn't be the first time he acted for the best interests of the League

I’m reading “The Birth of the New NFL” by Larry Felser, a good old Buffalo area boy who knows Wilson and a lot of the old AFL guys really well. And in that book, he talks alot about what Lamar Hunt, Bud Adams and Wilson did along with Al Davis to make the current NFL a reality. Ralph always did what was best for the league and I don’t see that changing.

One thing to me that lends credence to this idea is this: The NFLPA has demanded several times in the past 2 years to see the books of all 32 NFL teams, the real ones, not the ones used to report to the government which are amazingly generic. The NFLPA feels that there is ALOT more money flowing into the Owner’s pockets than they let on to the public, and the fact that NFL keeps stonewalling on this makes me think they are right.

Running under that assumption, then this makes perfect sense. Along with the Jags and the Chiefs, the Bills are one of the “poorest” franchises and by doing this, Wilson reenforces this idea for the good of the Owners. It sucks to be the 31 other teams stalking horse, but I can understand why it may be the case.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

the best way to figure this out

is to look at the actual selling price of the franchises. when potential new owners come in, they get a look at the books as part of their due diligence. no owner would sell for less than the team is actually worth, and no potential owner would pay more than its worth. the price can confidently be relied on to figure out the flow of money.

i’m not an accountant, but someone who knows valuations could work backwards from the public info to determine the cash flows.

Here is what we tend to forget as fans
He runs it like a business.

It is a business.

There is only one NFL football team that plays in New York state...and Canada?

Pro sports in general is all about the almighty dollar..........

its just that Wilson would rather Save money to earn money…..while other owners such as Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder believe in spending money to make money……..and in the end…..Both ways foster losing franchises……..unless you have smart folks in the personnel department.

Maybe the bringing back of Jauron demonstrates foresight on the part of Wilson.

There are so many teams looking for coaches this year and they are all ending up interviewing assistants and people like Mangini. Maybe it was smart to let them all battle it out for this kind of coaching talent. All reports point to Shanahan, Holmgren, and Cowher looking for head coaching stints next year.

If this is the case, and Wilson stays true to his word of making a big splash in free agency this off-season, it could be very smart to use this off-season to load the Bills with talent. This serves two purposes. One, it could prove that with talent Jauron is a playoff caliber coach and then we don’t have to make a change at all next year and can keep continuity going in our coaching staff (which Cowher, Reid, Shanahan, and Fisher have all proven creates perennially competitive franchises). Or Two, Jauron fails to take us to the playoffs, we cut him off, and then become attractive to one of these coaches as a young team, loaded with talent.

Maybe it showed industry savy and informatino gathering talent that we might have known Cowher was unavailable this year before the Jets and Browns

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

You may not be far off there either

If we have a big draft and get some horses in FA and DJ still falters, Ralph can terminate him next season. He losses less money, and we may become a desirable desitnation for a new coach. Also, we may see Ralph look into setting up the next owner to be in the next couple of years rather than go open auction. Ralph may end up not wanting the Bills to leave the area as much as we do…..

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

I'm not buying this at all.

Simply based on the fact that Ralphie just took Toronto for $72m. Everyone knows he can afford to buy him out. You think that the NFLPA doesn’t read the paper or watch the news or surf the internet? Hell 53 of them even traveled to Canada to play football.

by twoeightnine on Jan 6, 2009 1:57 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Has anyone outside of the owners ever had a good look at the real books? I’ve never seen it. One could make a legit argument that player salaries are high (especially good free agents) but without a good look at the books we have no idea what affect that has on a team’s bottom line. We may get a peek in 2010 if there is no cap.
I am absolutely sure owners talk to each other on a regular basis. They are businessmen first and businessmen talk to each other. I recently retired from co-owning an Ace hardware store. Our rep told me that Ace sits down with Do It Best, True Value and Orgill execs monthly. The Detroit big three sit down together regularly. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the NFL owners were already playing their cards in anticipation of the next CBA. I would not hazard a guess as to why Ralph retained DJ but I would believe that Ralph and the other owners have talked strategy on how best to approach the next CBA. Betya Al Davis is on Ralph’s speed dial. That’s “strategery”.

good points

they have to talk. They are all in it to make money. However some make more than others and they have their disputes. However, they all scratch each others backs in some way, shape or form

I think the key is, will Ralphie and the FO put their “money” where their collective mouths are and make the necessary personnel moves to make this team better?

If not, then it’ll reinforce the image that he is a bottom line guy and is simply retaining Jauron for the money. Otherwise, this may be a shrewd move to give DJ more resources to win, but if he fails, pull the plug on this team immediately.

That

is a really stupid thing for Florio to say. Why would a man over 90 years of age keep a coach he didn’t want to help out the other NFL franchises he competes against? I know some people get upset when they don’t get their way, but that’s a borderline idiotic thing to say. Everybody knows that NFL franchises are profitable and just about any owner can afford to buy out any coach’s contract. The issue with the CBA is they can’t give in to the players and let them have an unrighteous percentage of the pie. The proportion of revenue the players get should be about the same as any other business shells out for its employees. That’s WHY there is a salary cap… so teams like the Cowboys and Redskins can’t ruin the rest of the league.

"I don't agree with a damn thing you say, but I would die for your right to say it."

Actually that's a normal thing for Florio to say.

He has to say something really out of the blue nowadays to say something stupid for him.

I’m waiting for “Dolphins looking into signing Thor, god of thunder” to pop up as a headline, honestly. At least it’s interesting, in a ooo-honey-look-at-the-crazy-man-talking-to-the-bushes way.

John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

If Ralph Wilson always has the league's best interest in mind...

He’d field a competitive team. I don’t see his keeping Jauron as a means to save money he invested. If Jauron/Bills fail next season, the fallout in revenue would make letting Jauron go this off season seem like chump change.

The future

I was absolutely appalled at the fact that Buffalo would keep their coach until… Shanahan and Cowher and many other good coaches all seemed to defer their coaching status until next year which made me think that maybe, just maybe (not likely) that Ralph knew something we all didn’t and he was waiting until next year to get an established coach who could come in and turn this team around.

Thats a pipe dream if anyone has ever had one but I will continue to be an optimist mostly because I am drunk for the Buffalo Bills and I always think next year will be better.

by ballinbills1315 on Jan 6, 2009 11:40 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ralph can't afford to wait until next year.

Literally and literally. A) He might not be here. B) He can’t put out a subpar product this year in hopes of catching the big fish next year. (OK, he can put it out there and probably will.) He’s already going to have problems selling tickets without some big offseason pickups.

Might be true

With this story, and then a week later a finalist for the Hall of Fame (Where did that come from)… I’m thinking there might have been a little back-room dealing!!!
