McShay has Bills taking TE: From Chris Brown

McShay has Bills taking TE

By Chris Brown - Posted January 6th, 2009

For what it’s worth (knowing this will likely change 50 times) ESPN’s Todd McShay has the Bills taking Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham with the 11th pick in his mock draft. Personally I’d like to see a pass rushing DE.

Gresham has impressive numbers as is the case with just about every skill position offensive player for Oklahoma this year with 58 catches for 888 yards and 12 TDs. He’s 6′5″ 266.

He’s got good all-around talent with long arms and soft hands. So he’s an interesting prospect, but again I’d like to see the Bills address the pass rush first.

I just wanted to see the comments here.  Brown wants a DE (very telling coming from him of what they think of Schobel/Kelsay/Denney/Ellis moving forward).  They spent a third round draft pick last year and have paid the top three guys a lot of money to keep them.  Now we need to bring in someone else.

As for McShay's thoughts - is there anyone who is an ESPN insider?  If you could grab that info and email me or post it in the comments I can add it to the body of the post.  MattRichWarren@hotmail.com

I wouldn't mind seeing the DE or TE option here, assuming they address their need for a LB in Free Agency either by resigning Crowell or bringing someone new in.  If they don't they must draft a top LB in round one or two.

What are your thoughts guys?

He only has comments for his top 10…

He has Crabtree going 10th to SF…Aaron Maybin from Penn State at #6

Orakpo 27th
Greg Hardy 30th WTF
Has Everette Brown as the 2nd guy just outside his mock
Jerry Hughes DE TCU as 4th
Paul Kruger DE Utah 10th
No sign of Alex Mack

Screw it, here’s after the top 5
:
6. Cincinnati Bengals (4-11-1) — Aaron Maybin**, DE/OLB, Penn State
Maybin is only a third-year sophomore and he could use another year in school to develop physically. Still, his explosive initial burst as a pass-rusher is hard to ignore. Maybin can turn the corner in a hurry and he displays a powerful upper body for his size. The Bengals need a sack artist like Maybin, even if he would serve as nothing more than a situational edge rusher early in his career.

7. Oakland Raiders (5-11) — Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
Although Crabtree won’t wow anyone with his 40-yard dash time, it’s not hard to imagine Raiders owner Al Davis pulling the trigger on the premier pass-catcher in this year’s draft. Let’s assume, though, that Oakland goes in a different direction and looks to find protection for its investments in QB JaMarcus Russell and RB Darren McFadden. With Smith off the board in this scenario, Monroe looks like the best available option. He’s not quite as dominant as former teammate Brandon Albert (No. 15 overall to the Chiefs in 2008), but Monroe has the size and athleticism to protect Russell’s blindside for many years.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11) — Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
The Jaguars need to upgrade their offensive line and Smith is a fast-rising prospect who could figure into the top half of the first round. Smith needs to improve his bulk and strength but the former tight end displays impressive feet and size potential.

9. Green Bay Packers (6-10) — Gerald McCoy**, DT, Oklahoma
The Packers need help in the trenches on both sides of the ball and they should find a slew of quality options at No. 9 overall. McCoy is a third-year sophomore and there’s a good chance he will return to Oklahoma for another season. However, he possesses the disruptive skills to rocket up NFL draft boards should he leave early.

10. San Francisco 49ers (7-9) — Michael Crabtree**, WR, Texas Tech
Teams are cooling on taking wide receivers early in the draft. Last year not one receiver was selected in the first round. The Niners would have to think long and hard about passing on Crabtree, though. This third-year sophomore appears to be an exception to the rule. Crabtree is a physical pass-catcher with the vision, hands, body control and run-after-catch ability to quickly emerge as a premier pass-catcher at the next level.

11. Buffalo Bills (7-9) — Jermaine Gresham*, TE, Oklahoma

12. Denver Broncos (8-8) — Chris Wells*, RB, Ohio State

13. Washington Redskins (8-8) — Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi

14. New Orleans Saints (8-8) — Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC

15. Houston Texans (8-8) — Taylor Mays*, DS, USC

16. San Diego Chargers (8-8) — B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College

17. New York Jets (9-7) — James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State

18. Chicago Bears (9-7) — Mark Sanchez*, QB, USC

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) — Jeremy Maclin**, WR, Missouri

20. Detroit Lions (from 9-7 DAL) — Vontae Davis*, CB, Illinois

21. Arizona Cardinals (9-7) — Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

22. Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) — Russell Okung*, OT, Oklahoma State

23. Minnesota Vikings (10-6) — D.J. Moore*, CB, Vanderbilt

24. New England Patriots (11-5) — Brian Cushing, OLB, USC

25. Atlanta Falcons (11-5) — Terrence Cody*, DT, Alabama

26. Miami Dolphins (11-5) — Brandon Spikes*, ILB, Florida

27. Baltimore Ravens (11-5) — Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

28. Philadelphia Eagles (from 12-4 CAR) — Knowshon Moreno*, RB, Georgia

29. Indianapolis Colts (12-4) — Sen’Derrick Marks*, DT, Auburn

30. New York Giants (12-4) — Greg Hardy*, DE, Mississippi

31. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) — Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

32. Tennessee Titans (13-3) — Percy Harvin*, WR, Florida

Top 10 remaining on the board
1. Trent Williams*, OT, Oklahoma
2. Everette Brown*, DE, Florida State
3. LeSean McCoy*, RB, Pitt
4. Jerry Hughes*, DE, TCU
5. Sean Smith*, CB, Utah
6. C.J. Spiller*, RB, Clemson
7. Darrius Heyward-Bey*, WR, Maryland
8. Mark Herzlich*, LB, Boston College
9. Jared Cook*, TE, South Carolina
10. Paul Kruger*, DE, Utah

Orakpo 27th? really? am i missing something

As far as mack – tough to take a center in the first unless its in the 20’s – thats reaching for most teams

Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

by J2 on Jan 6, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah you are definitely missing something. And that is the knowledge that Todd McShay has no clue what he is talking about.

I can’t wait for ESPN to put Kiper and McShay on at the same time again and let them debate. Kiper embarrassed him pretty bad last year.

There is nobody out there in the national scouting world, television or internet who I am familiar with that I respect less than McShay.

LOL – kaiser – that was funny

i don’t take the mocks at face value anyways because teams like the Bills take Donte Whitner at #8

Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

I don't even pay attention to them till after the combine and teams are bringing guys in for workouts

Thats the ONLY time I even bother looking at the various draft guys mocks. Especially any done RIGHT now since Fa has NOT started and we still don’t know which Juniors will declare, what a waste of time.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

McShay

is an idiot for the most part. He said Marshawn lynch was was overrated coming out and not a 1st round pick…..i hate the guy cuz he is so friggn arrogant.

But that aside, Gresham is a jewl, I don’t know enough about him personally to think if he is OBD type of guy, but at #11, while many will think that is too high for a TE, if Gresham has the work ethic and type of person you can hand $14 mill guaranteed to, then I am for it. What he would do for our passing game and offense in general as I’ve stated numerous times, would be instantaneous impact, especially in the red zone where we have a terrible time scoring

I see that Pettigrew, another TE is 21st. I wonder what the differences are b/t him and Gresham? Anyone watch alot of either of these guys?

by sabre74kkn on Jan 6, 2009 3:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Pettigrew, is good. A better blocker but not even in the same zip code as Gresham when it comes to pass catching. Not saying he is bad at it, just that Gresham is that good at it.

Pettigrew also has some character issues, he was arrested but I don’t remeber for what off the top of my head.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Oklahoma St. kid with character issues?

Color me shocked … makes McShay’s mock even less credible to me to put him only 10 spots behind Gresham then.

Thanks for the info, sireric …

by sabre74kkn on Jan 6, 2009 3:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Here's the issue with Gresham

The last tight end I can remember going anywhere near that high was Vernon Davis at #6 with the 49ers and he was more highly touted that Gresham. Everyone raved about his speed and how he was going to be the best tight end ever. Well guess what, we’re still waiting for him to even prove he’s top 5, let alone top 10, in the league.

I want an Antonio Gates so bad, and if I could have assurance that Gresham would be one I would take him at #11 in a heartbeat, but so high in the first round for a TE scares me.

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

by poz on Jan 6, 2009 3:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

aha

but he had alex friggn smith throwing him the football. We need a playmaker, a kid with some swagger to come into Buffalo. Gresham is a stud. Got that basketball frame, great leaping ability and is tough as nails. I can’t wait to watch him on thrusday night along with Spikes the ILB for Florida, another kid I’m real intrigued by. Mark my words, Spikes in the NFL will be an instant impact player like the beason’s and patrick willis’ before him

Yeah, I don’t know why so many people on this site talk up Maualuga as an option at 11, but Spikes has been mentioned so few times. I would prefer Spikes over big Rey.

by kaisertown on Jan 6, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve been high on Maualaga because of I’ve seen a lot of him. I haven’t seen much of Spikes, but I’ve heard good things, and I’ll be watching him in the Fiesta Bowl.

by PozDispenser on Jan 6, 2009 6:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Davis at least showed streches of unbelievable play at Maryland. He also played under a former NFL coordinator in Ralph Friedgen. He physically had the tools to play the position. Part of it is on Vernon Davis and his work ethic, but they’ve had some serious turnover in staff and coordinators, as well as QB issues, so IMO he went to the wrong team and had the wrong attitude. I can’t completely dump on him, having seen him tear up the ACC for a few years.

That being said, I completely understand your hesitation, especially seeing our mixed results in 1st round picks over the last few years.

by sabre74kkn on Jan 6, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

we get one more look at him which is good

thats interesting about him going to the wrong team with the wrong attitude. What kind of guy is Gresham because I have no idea who this kid is character wise, work ethic wise, or in fact in any other way then his play on the field. Do you know how he compares to Vernon Davis in this regard?

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

by poz on Jan 6, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, well, Davis had 52 catches, 509 yards and 4 scores in 2007. I’d kill for that kind of production here.

People forget that a) Davis is a head case, and b) He missed 6 games due to injury in his first two years in the league that hindered his development slightly. Dude’s still got 103 catches over his first three years. Royal has 81 in the same time frame.

  1. is also much, much different than #11, more than a lot of people realize.

I have yet to hear a single bad thing about Gresham. If he comes out, he’d be one of the Top 3 guys I’m looking at.

actually

I’ve been hearing (or rather reading) on mock draft sites that the Bills are the toughest team for mockers this year because we have so many different directions we can go in and with a draft as deep as it is this year, we are pretty lucky to have #11 in a year like this with all our needs. The top 4 guys I’ve seen popping up as potential options are Rey Maluaga (however you spell that crazy Samoans name), Jermaine Gresham, Everette Brown, and Alex Mack in that order. This is based on the sites I;ve been looking at least.

He does but he is pretty much a consensus top ten pick.

But, hey, you never know. The uncertainty makes it so much fun. Last year no way Leo falls to #11. So this year what if Curry, Brown, Orakpo, Spikes, Laurinaitis, Gresham amd Mack are available? Now THAT is not an easy decision.

I’d have trouble not taking Orakpo if he’s there. But then I’d be nervous as hell that Mack won’t make it to the second round or that passing on Gresham means losing an all-pro TE

Well the obvious ones like RB after they traded McGahee and MLB after London Fletcher left etc ….. are always addressed with a lot of effort. The ones that should be obvious, but aren’t like TE after watching Robert Royal play a couple of offensive series or DE after the Bills get no pressure whatsoever, but have a bunch of guys under contract etc…. is debatable.

I do think the Bills do a good job of identifying what spots they need to improve at. Addressing those situations the best they can is entirely another story.

better list at national football post IMO

from Lombardi and co at the post great stuff
1. WR Michael Crabtree*, Texas Tech
The nation’s premiere threat at receiver. He has the entire package and is destined to become one of the NFL’s top wide receivers.

2. OT Michael Oher, Ole Miss
A powerful, well-proportioned tackle with light feet and impressive body control on the outside. He possesses the ideal skill set for a NFL left tackle.

3. DE Brian Orakpo, Texas
An explosive athlete with a powerful frame and good flexibility in his lower half. He will be able to rush the passer as a 4-3 defensive end or a 3-4 outside linebacker.

4. DT Terrence Cody*, Alabama
A massive two-gap nose tackle who eats up blockers and clogs run lanes; he’s ideal for a 3-4 defense.

5. OT Andre Smith*, Alabama
A nimble-footed tackle with great body control and agility. He may be best-suited to play on the right side because of his girth.

6. ILB Brandon Spikes*, Florida
A do-it-all linebacker who displays great power in the box and fluidity in space. He’s the kind of athlete you can build a defense around.

7. FS Taylor Mays*, USC
A physically imposing safety who can play near the line of scrimmage and has great range against the pass.

8. QB Sam Bradford*, Oklahoma
He’s the nation’s most accurate passer. He has all the intangibles to mature into a productive NFL quarterback.

9. CB Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State
A natural cover man who has the footwork and transition skills to stay with receivers in and out of their breaks.

10. DE Aaron Maybin*, Penn State
This undersized defensive end showcases the first step and the closing speed to consistently get after the passer. He plays a lot more stout than his 245-pound frame would indicate.

11. LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest
An impressive sideline-to-sideline athlete who tracks the ball well in pursuit. He has good power inside, and plays the run and pass both equally well.

12. TE Jermaine Gresham*, Oklahoma
He possesses the body control and athleticism of a wide receiver with the frame of a big-time tight end.

13. RB Chris Wells*, Ohio State
He exhibits a rare blend of speed, burst and agility for a man of his dimensions (6 feet 1, 230 pounds).

14. DT Gerald McCoy*, Oklahoma
The nation’s most disruptive interior lineman. He has a powerful lower body, with the quickness to shoot gaps and make plays behind the line of scrimmage.

15. LB Rey Maualuga, USC
He has the power to fill run lanes and destroy ballcarriers on contact. He is a much better athlete than given credit for.

16. QB Matthew Stafford*, Georgia
He has the physical skill set to make scouts drool, but after a somewhat disappointing junior campaign, questions remain about his accuracy and intangibles.

17. DT B.J. Raji, Boston College
An explosive nose tackle with a great first step and a powerful lower half He has the ability to simply overwhelm offensive linemen at the point of attack.

18. WR Percy Harvin*, Florida
An explosive playmaker in every sense of the word. He can line up at running back or in the slot and will add a lot of versatility to an NFL team’s passing attack.

19. DT Peria Jerry, Ole Miss
He has played as well as any defensive tackle in the nation and is really shooting up draft boards. He has good girth, with the quickness to shoot gaps and blow up plays inside.

20. DE George Selvie*, USF
He exhibits the most explosive first step off the line of any defensive end in the country. He is a bit limited with his pass rush repertoire but he is a consistent factor off the edge.

I HIGHLY doubt the Lions will take a WR with their number 1

Thats is the National Football Posts list of the top 20 draftees

Not their actual mock, they won’t do one till closer to the draft.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

would be kinda funny though … maybe not to Lions fans …

It’s Super Sized Rumblings.

Amazing that Mack is only #75 on that list… he’s not worth the #11 pick.

imagine we get Mack with our second……that would be excellent

by J2 on Jan 6, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If we don't get him in the second round

we should be able to pick up one of the other top three centers and they could all fight for a starting spot on day 1 IMO. Although I don’t watch much college football.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 6, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe we could go the Indy route

Pick 3 centers and then make one of them a guard….and maybe another a gunner….

by Ron From NM on Jan 6, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

my guess

is that the Bills will covet Max Unger more then Mack because of his versatility.

by gatornation on Jan 7, 2009 9:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Buffalo doesn't need versatile.

The Jack of All Trades and Master of None routine hasn’t worked out very well on the offensive line. Sure, Preston can play 3 OL positions—he just plays them all poorly. I’d much rather have a dominant player who plays exactly one position than a guy who can fill in at a variety of spots.

by Ron From NM on Jan 7, 2009 4:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with that, Ron. I’ll sacrifice some pass protection if it means we can get a road grading center.

It is interesting to go to various sites and look at everyone’s top 20 or so lists. There are a few players who are on most boards but the picks are all over the place. Who do you respect as a draft prognosticator? Any favorites?

I think Kiper has been in the business for so long that he kinda gets underrated at this point. I really like Scott Wright too.

I hate when they

grade the drafts the day of or day after the draft. It’s so silly. They can go back and grade three or four years later, but not immediately.

I’m really shocked that Maybin is up so high on some of these boards. I wouldn’t come out early if I were him.

Can't he develop further in the pros?

The NFL isn’t the NBA, these guys can develop further in practice!

by BuffCrunch on Jan 6, 2009 10:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Having seen him play, I’m not sure how it is that he is ranked that high. I guess he could learn in the pros, but would you take a guy in the top ten who needs that much developing? I sure wouldn’t.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on Jan 6, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No

but I’m just saying if he’s going to be a top 10 pick, he’s got to go pro…..I wouldn’t pick him if he does need that much developing, though if he’s a projected top 10, I’m not sure how much he needs…

Keep in mind

that many agents are getting the word out that this year is the year for underclassmen eligible for the draft to come out due to the uncapped year coming up. I don’t know if that plays into Maybin’s decision but I’m sure if he was on the fence it would push him over.

speed

of him tempts everyone. But he is so damn light. He needs to put on some serious weight

this weight issue

confuses the hell out of me… Maybin is listed at the same height/weight as Selvie, 6’4 245, but I’ve seen some posters wanting Selvie as their 1st round pick. Seems like for years people have been saying that Schobel needs to add weight, and that he’s too light… He has the same dimensions! The Bills website has him listed as 6’4 243. I don’t know, I guess that opinions vary widely regarding the ideal height/weight of DE’s…

by BuffCrunch on Jan 6, 2009 7:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Schobel doesn’t have the kind of speed Selvie has though…..

I always compare a DE with Bruce Smith’s prime playing weight – 6’4, 260. Schobel gets a lot out of his size but by current NFL standards he is undersized at 243.

by keuka121 on Jan 6, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Schobel isn’t just undersized, I was talking about this with someone before and we could only come up with 2 starting defensive ends in the entire league (Jason Taylor and Robert Mathis) who were within 15 pounds of Schobel.

It’s also important to note the difference between a 245 pound kid coming out of college and a 245 pound man who used to play much heavier, but has been shedding pounds each season to not lose his quickness. Schobel weighed 263 when he got drafted.

His legs look real skinny. He has, supposedly, the best first step of any DE this year. I did watch him in the Rose Bowl and he is a relentless pursuer. I think Kaiser has him pegged right in that he would make an awesome blitzing OLB in a 3-4. Hope I had that right.

by keuka121 on Jan 6, 2009 7:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with most people here that Maybin is really raw and could use another year or two in college. I think he could play in a 4-3 in the NFL if he sticks around for awhile and gains some weight and strength or if he gets drafted by Indy who somehow gets away with linebacker sized defensive ends. You got me right though, I believe that if he declares this year he will be limited to a 3-4 (or at least his draft value will be so much higher to a 3-4 team that he will definitely end up with one).

I also believe that Michael Johnson has a quicker first step. In fact, I’m not sure if I have ever seen a draft prospect that explodes off the snap like Johnson does. Then again, I like him more than most do.

by kaisertown on Jan 7, 2009 12:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Johnson sure has the physical tools. Wonder why he does not produce more. Time played or coaching? He is rather new to football.
