Interesting Early Picks...

The offseason has just begun (for most teams). Its still a little early to look at the upcoming draft (underclassmen don't even have to declare until Jan 15th), but nevertheless I gathered these from some Mock Draft sites round the Web. I thought it interesting that there doesn't seem to be any general consensus among them as to what the Bills' biggest need is...

Along the way I kept track of when it was foreseen that Mack would be drafted, and point out (in italics) anything else that I thought was interesting..

  • 11) Buffalo Bills- OT Jason Smith

Jason Peters gave up more sacks than any starting tackle in the NFL in 2008. *(Is this true? Where can we find stats regarding this? Curious to get your thoughts on this one Ron...)

Mack at #26
http://www.kornheiserscartel.com/2009/01/10102.html

  • 11) Buffalo Bills: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

After such a hot start, who would have thought that the Bills would once again end up with the No. 11 pick? It's not a good time to be a Buffalo fan right now. *(well said, ugh) One of the team's huge weaknesses this year was its lacking pass rush. Buffalo finished with 24 sacks on the year, and no player had more than four. I know Aaron Schobel missed most of the year, but they had similar problems even when he was in the lineup. *(This should make the DE camp happy, and I wouldn't mind the pick at all... Think he needs to gain some weight though, and I just wonder about some of the  southern athletes playing in  an upstate NY winter...)

Mack at #30

  • Rd 1) BUFFALO BILLS: JERMAINE GRESHAM, TE, OKLAHOMA

After getting off to a great start in 2008 the Bills regressed as the season wore on and a lot of the blame can be placed on their offenses inability to score points. With a young quarterback that is to be expected to a degree but they also need to add some more weapons and firepower. One area where they are in particular need of an upgrade is tight end and Jermaine Gresham is the best this class has to offer. A fantastic athlete with a great blend of size (6-6, 261) and speed, Gresham is like a wide receiver in a tight end's body and a real weapon in the passing game. He's not just a pass catcher though and he has some potential as a blocker as well. Just to give you an idea of what kind of threat Gresham is, he actually led the Sooners in touchdowns catches in 2008 and even broke one for 73 yards. You won't see many tight ends do that! Some might say the Bills prefer a tight end who is more of a blocker than a receiver, in which case Brandon Pettigrew might be a better fit, but I would argue they have that now with Robert Royal and it isn't working out very well. Buffalo could also use an upgrade at safety alongside Donte Whitner and don't rule out a defensive end either because Chris Kelsay & Ryan Denney aren't getting the job done. *(I would love to see Gresham in a Bills' uniform... but I think its a luxury they cant afford. Address the lines first!)

No Mack in 1st Rd.
http://www.draftcountdown.com/sub/Mock-Draft-A.php

  • 11) Buffalo Bills - C, Alex Mack, California

Center, guard, plug him into the interior of your line and you will have a pro bowler for years to come. Mack (6' 4" 308 lbs) is one of the best centers to enter the draft in a number of years. *(No arguments here! Though I would still like to trade back and get him if at all possible...)

http://www.nfldraftdog.com/Mock_Drafts/2009_nfl_mock_draft.htm

  • 11) Buffalo Bills: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC

The Bills get a great LB here in the 2009 NFL Draft complementing their young LB Core. *(And move Poz to the outside I guess? Once again, unless we address the lines in FA, I think we have to go there first. There are good FA LB's available.)

Mack at #31
http://newnfldraft.com/archives/424

  • 11) Buffalo Bills - Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

Smith does not have prototype cornerback height. However, behind Jenkins he has emerged as the second-ranked corner prospect on many draft projection boards, and he has shown both great speed and (perhaps just as importantly) outstanding instinct at reading quarterbacks and blanketing receivers. Buffalo has not had a top-tier CB since losing Nate Clements to a free agency mega-payday with the 49ers in early 2007. *(Are you friggin' kidding me? People are still harping on the loss of Clements?! After Leo in Rd1 last year, it ain't happening...)

Mack at #32
http://www.draftking.com/nfl/2009/mockdraft.shtml

  • 11) BUF: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

Another year of seasoning should help Trent Edwards and the offense, so the Bills grab a pass rusher. Brown had at least three sacks in four of his last six regular-season games.

Rd 2) BUF: Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma
James Hardy was selected last year to fill the gaping hole across from Lee Evans, but he suffered a serious knee injury. Iglesias had a monster year with the high-scoring Sooners. *(Wait... just how serious is Hardy's injury? Will he likely be back in time for training camp?)

Mack #34 (2nd pk, Rd2)
http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/2009/2009_nfl_mock_draft.cfm?writer=19

  • Rd 1)Buffalo  B.J. Raji DT 6'1" 325 Boston College*(I'd be ok with this pick...)

Rd 2)Buffalo Trevor Canfield OG 6'5" 320 Cincinnati *(Why G? Not after extending Butler...)
Rd 3)Buffalo Joe Burnett CB 5'11" 183 UCF *(Certainly the Bills have bigger needs)
Rd 4)Buffalo Jorvorskie Lane FB 6'0" 268 Texas A&M
Rd 5)Buffalo Kory Sperry TE 6'5" 252 Colorado State
Rd 6)Buffalo Robert Brewster OT 6'4" 312 Ball State
Rd 7)Buffalo William Beatty OT 6'6" 310 Connecticut
*(Don't know much yet about some of these later prospects... anyone?)

Alphonso Smith? Joaquin Iglesias? Those guys would make me vomit.

Literally would not mind any other pick mentioned here, though if we’re taking Jason Smith, Peters better be out of town.

Iglesias

is shown as a 2nd round pick not a 1st. probably good value in the 2nd but shouldn’t be that high on the bills priority list.

by gatornation on Jan 7, 2009 9:24 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Unless they trade Peters I highly doubt they take an OT first pick.

Brown would also be a good pick. Surprised Orakpo isn’t on there but he most likely will be gone.

Raji would definately satisfy me.

Mack would be a staple – high price to pay for a center. there are two really good centers available after Mack so that might be the approach they take

Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

by J2 on Jan 6, 2009 4:29 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the Bills stay at 11

Greshem, Mack, Brown in that order is my wish list. The drop-off on the center prospects is minimal and we can get one at #43 or trade back up possibly.

One thing the Bills have always done is sign FA linebackers. Just something they do. I would imagine the same thing this year for Crowell/Ellison’s spot. no USC LB.

Definately no CB pick, either. They would be booed worse than Matt Millen in Detroit.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 6, 2009 4:33 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, that would work for me too

I think the Bills fill the hole at LB in FA, and I think we see a combo of C in draft and FA. Depending on the caliber of kid taken in FA at C, that will dictate where we take C. If its a guy barely above Fowler/Preston ability, C will be high in the draft. IF we somehow nab a top level guy in FA at C, C falls way down in the draft.

Thats why I conitnue to take the wait and see approach. I need to know which Juniors are coming out, and who will be in FA after the Superbowl.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

by WABillsfan on Jan 6, 2009 5:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

gimme gimme

Gresham…..i’ve had my eye on the kid since last season and he just continues to impress. I don’t see how anyone could argue what wonders a pick like that would do for our offense. It would be so dramatic to have him running seams down the middle, making CB’s respect Lee’s deep threat and thus opening up so much underneath for Reed, Johnson, Lynch/Jackson, Fine. Plus the Red Zone capabilities. Plus I like the fact that if Gresham came in and produced it would only make Hardy better to see a guy like that and it would just boost the offense as a whole. I love defense as much as the next guy, but we can still adress the defensive issues in FA and the 2-3 rounds.

I want Gresham so friggn bad!

after I just said that

i realized there is no way they will take a TE. Almost surely to be a DE if I know Dick “Cheerio” jauron

You make it sound like a DE would be a terrible pick….why?

If we know Jauron, it’ll be a DB…

he can't

go DB. no i don’t want it to sound like a terrible pick if we pick a DE. It wouldn’t be. But it just makes so much sense to me to pick Gresham if he were there, that then I automatically know OBD won’t do it.

FA will tell us a lot however. Luckily March 1st is less than 2 months away instead of the draft which is a full 4 months away.

If we had something that resembles that last one, I would cry. Seriously, no Center? No pass rusher? A CB in the 3rd and a FB in the 4th? 2 OT’s? The Raji pick would be ok, but not if it’s followed up like that.

Luckily, these “draft experts” have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to the Bills and their needs.

That’s what sticks out with so many of these so called “experts”. They don’t seem to form team needs lists.

i forget which site

But i’ll find out and give the link, one of them to me clearly came to this site. The analysis read something along the lines of, the Bills fan base is divided over a desperate need to draft a center and defense end, with tight end a serious weakness.

When I read that I figured the author must go around to all the SBN blogs to do his mock. Which would be very smart.

Rd 2)Buffalo Trevor Canfield OG 6’5" 320 Cincinnati *(Why G? Not after extending Butler…)

Butler has shown that he is injury prone, and Dockery has been disappointing at times, plus the Bills definetly need a back-up here. Given those factors I wouldn’t be opposed to that pick at all. If he can push Dockery to get better, then that makes the pick even better.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

You have to pick your way through each player, but it is revealing. Look at Mike Gandy. Easy to see why the Bills let him go. Jason doesn’t look that good compared to other good ones. I have a bit of a problem with the stats there. Not sure how they calculate sacks allowed. Gandy allowed 6.25 sacks this year. How do you allow a quarter of a sack? That’s wierd.

by poz on Jan 6, 2009 7:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well I looked up the Pro Bowlers for comparison’s sake:

Sacks Allowed:
Jordan Gross, Carolina: 15 G, 3.0 Sacks
Walter Jones, Seattle: 12 G, 3.5 Sacks
Chris Samuels, Washington: 12 G, 3.0 Sacks

Joe Thomas, Cleveland: 16 G, 4.5 Sacks
Jason Peters, Buffalo: 13 G, 11.5 Sacks
Michael Roos, Tennessee: 16 G, 1.0 Sack

Wow. Umm, this reminds me of that song from Sesame Street back in the day, “One of these things is not like the others…” The holdout still really irks me, he basically “practiced” for the first 4 regular season games. So maybe he reallly only got paid for 9 games… Suddenly his current salary looks better!

Peters' sacks allowed

I charge a lineman with a sack if his guy gets to the QB (Duh!) and the QB hasn’t had at least 4-5 seconds to get rid of the ball. I only had access to 10 pass plays in the Chargers game.

Seattle: Didn’t play
Jaguars: 1
Raiders: 2
Rams: 1
Cardinals: 1
Chargers: 0 (I only had access to 10 pass plays)
Miami: 1
Jets: 0
Pats: 0
Browns: 0
Chiefs 0
49ers: 0
Miami: 2 (1 was a sack/fumble)
Jets: 1 (sack/fumble)
Broncos: Didn’t play
Pats: Didn’t play

That adds up to 9 sacks, 6 in the first half of the season and 3 in the last half. I’m guessing that that website hung 2.5 sacks on Peters when it was clear to me that the QB held the ball too long. I hadn’t added up the numbers yet but it’s really not too surprising. We all knew that Peters took about half of the season to get back to where he had been at the end of the 2007 season. The number serves to illustrate what a joke the Pro Bowl selection process is.

by Ron From NM on Jan 6, 2009 10:20 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thanks Ron!

I was waiting for you to chime in! If you can knock a couple sacks off Peters’ total, the same can probably be said for the other tackles as well. I’m getting off the subject, but… Simply put, he didn’t stack up to the top talent and will be laughing all the way to the Pro Bowl, all the while holding the Bills hostage. In my opinion (for what its worth) Peters is getting plenty of $$$ if the Bills only get him at top form for half a season… I now have enough reservations about his character to be concerned about giving him a fat contract…

by BuffCrunch on Jan 6, 2009 10:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Trent didn’t get sacked by the Chargers so that number is correct.

by kaisertown on Jan 7, 2009 1:05 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

look at that stretch

it would appear that after he got over his cobwebs after the holdout eventually. If we give him a big contract this off-season there is probably a good chance he returns to true Pro Bowl form

Another View

Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune produced a mock draft for this past Sunday’s paper. He had the Bills taking Matthew Stafford in round 1. A few Travis Henry quotes might get dredged up if they do that. He had Everette Brown going to the Chiefs with the 3rd pick, and Aaron Curry to the Raiders at 7. He didn’t have Mack going to anyone in round 1.

by Gino Parilli on Jan 6, 2009 11:22 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Great stuff Ron!!

Great stats on Peters. The guy is a solid rock, give him his money and read him the riot act, tell him he has to be a TEAM player and see how it goes over. Good, you sign him, bad, you trade him. I really want the Bills to either go LB or TE in the draft. If Maguagla is there, draft him immediately. That would be a great scenario if we got Canty at DE in FA and Maguagla in round one. If I were the GM I would trade back into the first and get either a C or TE.

We don’t need any DB’s and we don’t need any WR’s or RB’s. We need big, athletic playmakers that want to WIN!!

Why do you love Chris Canty so much? The dude defines mediocrity. We don’t need another player like that at DE.

by Kurupt on Jan 7, 2009 11:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The dude defines mediocrity

I actually think that Canty in a 4-3 would be worse than mediocre. The guy is a pretty good 3-4 end and could be an almost average 4-3 under tackle. Canty is a great example of people not understanding the difference between talent and someone who can excel in our scheme.

K, this is not directed at you. Would the 280 pound Tom Nalen be a great center for Buffalo? Or would he be a god awful center who is worse than the guys we currently have? The correct answer is the second part. He might be a hall of famer as a zone blocking center who chips and cuts and uses his athliticism to make an impact at the second level. Ability is ability but people need to start understanding that a good player in one scheme is a bad player in another and that a superstar in one scheme could be one of the best ever at his position or an average player in a different scheme.

I'm familiar with Will Beatty

He’ll play G in the NFL, and no way he lasts past the first day of the draft. He emerged this year as a senior, and will play in the Senior Bowl.

If I’m still remotely a Bills fan come April, and they wait past the second round to draft a TE (again), I’ll vomit (again). I’m tired of this team trying to get by on the cheap at this position. Remember the signing of the two Raiders’ castoffs a year ago?

Stafford? Pompei is an idiot. We need another rookie QB like we need more 3rd string tight ends.

This season has been the worst feeling ever provided by our Bills...a feeling of humiliation. Starting out 5-1 and finishing in last place has been a very cruel tease.
