Scout.com: Penn State's Maybin Turning Pro
I'm pretty excited about this one, folks. Maybin was the best DE in college football last season. He may not last until Buffalo's pick in April, but he deepens an already talented class of speed rushers.

he is a great talent
but he is no where near NFL ready for the d-line…
his main attribute is speed and he can run around anybody but he still needs to develope his skills and his size…he will be a force in the NFL trust me but he is very very raw (not underdeveloped b/c LJ is the man at producing Dlinemen)
I would love to see him in buffalo…but if he were to start I would not expect much the first couple of years

completely agree...
he uses his natural talents too much right now… another year in college would have done him well.

Thats why I wasn’t very high on him. He could very well go in the top ten, but I wouldn’t take him.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Who said it had to be our mistake? The one thing this does is add a big name with big potential to the talent pool. That’s good for us either way!

This may turn out to be the deepest draft class in NFL history. They want to beat the next CBA. I would not take him.

Time to start looking at this dude too! Is he a top 10 guy, without a doubt?

i don’t know why everyone thinks that he is. To me both Brown and Orakpo will go ahead of him. That said, he might have the best all around combination of strength and speed out of any DE in this class

Everyone knocks him because he’s small, but the dude was a sophomore. He only weighs like 236 or whatever, but he plays bigger because he’s as strong as an ox. He’s an every-down end, and he’s obviously got the frame to get bigger.
He’s young enough where people will proceed with caution, but this guy has “boom” written all over him. Best pass rusher in the nation as a sophomore? Sign me up.

i don't necessarily disagree with that...
But that begs the question – why come out? He could have spent another year honing his skills and putting more weight on his frame (some believe that he’s put on all that he can). So do you draft a very raw DE in the top 10 of the draft, knowing very well that he may not contribute at the level you would expect of the top 10 pick in his first year?
Do the Bills have the fortune to wait for him to devleop?

thats exactly right
To be a top ten pick you are expected to contribute. This kid is under 240 and is leaving as a sophmore. Two problems with this: He needs to be coached into gaining and maintaining weight so he is not pushed around and he is entering the draft with so little experience its absurd.
Like I said, everyone knows he plays with a non-stop motor is a physically gifted, in fact he’s also technically sound when using his hands. However, you can’t make up for the fact that he won’t contribute for at least a season or two.
Thats not top ten

Why come out? 2010 is an uncapped year in the NFL, at least under the current CBA. Prospects are coming out now to collect on their millions, because teams won’t be able to spread cap hits out over the length of a deal like they did during capped years. Thus, more money up front. Thus, this will be the year that rookies get more money than ever, and it’ll be by a long shot. Maybin’s going to be a first-rounder. He’s going to make a butt load of money.

Here are the specifics on that…
- After the last game of the 2008 regular season, signing bonus proration is reduced from a maximum of six years to a maximum of five years.
- In 2009, there is no June 1 rule for Signing Bonus acceleration. If a player is removed from the roster or his contract is assigned via waivers or trade at any time in the 2009 League Year, any unamortized signing bonus will be immediately included in Team Salary.
- There is no year-end netting of incentives in 2009. Not-likely-to-be-earned incentives are charged to team salary immediately when earned, and likely-to-be-earned incentives are deducted when they are no longer possible to earn.
- Guaranteed salary from 2010 and beyond is reallocated to capped years unless the entire 2009 salary is guaranteed.
- 50% of guaranteed salary in any League Year beyond 2012 is reallocated to capped years.
- The 30% increase rule restricts salary increases from 2009 to 2010. For example: a player with a $500,000 Salary in 2009 would be limited to annual salary increases of $150,000 ($500,000 × 30%) beginning in 2010.
- A team can include only three veteran team incentives in a player contract covering 2009 and beyond. These incentives must also be coupled with a playtime requirement. Previously, clubs were limited to eight team incentives and no playtime requirement.

He is another Vernon Gholston waiting to happen
Another guy who really really really needed to stay in College for another year to become something. So idiot will draft him high based on what he MIGHT become, but unless he ends up with a team like the Giants who already had a lot of pass rushing talent and he could sit and learn for a couple of seasons like many of their guys did, I think he is a bust about to happen.
Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

I’d say he’s more in the teens range. Which means we’d be reaching just a tad if we pick him

Maybin
I completely agree with Brian on this on. What this essentially means is that if say the 49ers and Packers, which is very likely, draft DE, then there’ll still be one terrific DE left of Aaron Maybin, Everette Brown and Brian Orakpo (if they as it looks right now are the three top DE’s in the country come draft time). I need to look at the tape, but after having watched a lot of Penn State and Texas games I can say that Orakpo and Maybin are keepers. I personally like Orakpo more, but that’s because of him being extremely strong at the point of attact, a freak athlete and a guy, who unlike Gholston consistenly gets the job done. He has played the 4-3 defense in college as DE and knows how to get to the QB from that position.
My problem with Maybin is that he reminds me too much of his former fellow Penn State alum, Tamba Hali, who hasn’t been a difference maker at the pros.
Orakpo is a guy, whom you can build your defense around, because how he wreaks havoc. As far as Everette Brown from FSU, then I’ll need to look at the games, in which he played, before I can draw too many conclusions. I believe he’s a better fit for a 3-4 defense, but we’ll see what happens.

This guy is definitely good
12 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. That is a LOT of time spent in the backfield. I would press someone here to find a player who has a larger sum of tackles for loss and sacks.
Yes, he is a little undersized but isn’t Dwight Freeney? I love him.
However, Everette Brown is still my boy. 13.5 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss. He should be the #11 pick for the Bills. I have noticed a few mock sites have predicted the Bills to pick him after I was on the bandwagon. Coincidence? I think not.

George Selvie last year
had 31.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks….injuries and double teams really limited him this year though….

Someone on this board said Selvie was not declaring for the NFL draft. So i just disregarded him. He also doesn’t play for as good of a school as FSU or PSU. He still is a really good player though.

Dwight Freeney is undersized because he is really short at 6’1’’. He weighed in at 263 lbs. at the combine which is an incredible build for someone that short.

There are now four legit top 15 DE’s in the class. What a year! Maybin could go before we pick. If you search the net, he has a heck of a rep. That means but one thing – the #11 pick will be a top tier DE!!! Who’s your favorite? I think Orakpo will definitely go before us. Therefore I’ll go with Everette Brown.

why do you guys not mention Johnson (GT) and Selvie (SF)? They seem to get very high grades at DE from scouting services.

I really like Michael Johnson actually. He seems to be a Julious Peppers type of player. I know I may be getting a little ahead of myself. He has 17.5 tackles for loss and 9 sacks. Those are very good numbers, also, he has played well against top competition.
After all the combine stuff I think this guy will shoot up the boards and go extremely early (maybe top 5).

I totally agree. I think Johnson is the best DE in the draft this year. People knock his production, but considering that he got the same treatment that everybody gives Selvie a pass for, he had more than enough production for me.

Johnson
I see a lot of mixed reviews about Johnson and most are not too good. They say he the body and speed but does produce on the field. He is a clear boom or bust pick, but far to risky for number 11. Most say he will be a combine freak so he will probably get drafted higher than he should, can you say Mike Mamula.

Really??
Do we really need another speed rusher?? How has that worked out for our cover 2 d?? Have we made the postseason that past couple of years with speed rushers?? Have we gotten over the 500 mark with speed rushers?? If you can’t answer these questions don’t consider yourself an avid fan of the Bills.

Dude, you are WAY too vicious. “Don’t consider yourself an avid fan of the Bills”?! Calm down and stop treating everyone like you’re smarter than them.
And as K said, we don’t have ANY defensive ends on this roster that are “speed rushers”. I’d be interested to hear which end on this roster you view as speedy…

I don’t see Everette Brown or Michael Johnson as “just” a speed rusher. Johnson has the size to be an every down DE now and Brown already has an arsenal of moves. Ten more pounds on Everette and he could also be considered an every down NFL DE. I try to keep in mind that Bruce Smith (the measuring stick I use) played in his prime at 6’4, 260lbs. Everette is slowly putting on the weight. Go watch Everette on Youtube. He has super inside moves and sheds his blocker regularly.

haha, like K said, we don’t have speed rushers. I guess Schobel is the closest thing and go figure, he is our only DE that is even worth putting on the field in pass downs.
What is your solution to our lack of a pass rush then if you aren’t open to drafting an undersized guy who excels at getting after the QB?
