A guy deserving a raise...
I was thinking this morning of our offensive woes and lack of imagination in the passing game. It's unbelievable to me that we have $15M tied up in two receivers the caliber of Owens & Evans and that we are unable to get them the ball. The last few days I've been quite vocal about my total dissatisfaction with the job that Jauron is doing and that we should get rid of him sooner than later. I also suggested that Jon Gruden seems like a perfect replacement because he is young, very passionate, an offensive guru that also has experience with the defensive system that we run in Buffalo.
This morning I started to look at potential offensive coordinators. Gruden went from receivers coach in GB to OC at Philly and was quite successful so I started to look at potential offensive position coaches that might deserve a raise to OC. One guy that has done miracles with very little isNew Orleans receiver coach: Curtis Johnson
When you see the list of guys that he has coached you quickly realize how good this guy is. People forget that Colston was a 7th round pick and Moore was undrafted. Henderson was a 2nd rounder. The only first rounder was Robert Meachem.
This is what they say about him on his bio sheet from the New Orleans site:
"With a coaching style that is intense and detail-oriented, Johnson’s group of wideouts have combined for 65 touchdown grabs and 24 performances with over 100 yards receiving since 2006.
Entering his fourth year of his initial NFL assignment, few coaches at any level can match the wide receivers that Johnson has helped develop. The group of standouts under his direction while at Miami and his prior stop at San Diego State includes some of the top wide receivers over the last decade, including NFL first-round picks Andre Johnson, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Yatil Green and Darnay Scott.
At Miami, Johnson was part of a staff that went to nine bowl games and won the 2001 National Championship. He polished the skills of at least one All-Big East performer each season from 1996-2005, including Johnson – the third overall pick by Houston in 2003 – and Moss, who became the Hurricanes’ all-time leader in receiving yardage before making the Pro Bowl for Washington. Wayne departed ranked first in school history in catches is a Pro Bowl performer for Indianapolis.
In his five-year stint at San Diego State (1989-93) Johnson landed some of the school’s biggest recruits, including 2000 NFL MVP and fellow New Orleans native Marshall Faulk as well as Scott, who completed his eight-year NFL career with 408 grabs and 37 TDs. Each year Johnson was with the Aztecs the school had an all-conference performer at wide receiver."
I think this guy knows a thing or two about the receiver position and I could see him getting an opportunity as an OC. I doubt that he would have a hard time getting TO & Lee involved in the game plan. Johnson was hired by Payton in 2006 and has been the one constant because the OC has changed a few times. The saints went from bottom dwellers to number 1 in total offensive yards in 2006, dropped to #4 in 2007 then have been #1 ever since. I think Johnson has a lot of value as a potential OC.
Gruden as HC & Johnson as OC, not bad...
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

nice post
very interesting. surprising he hasnt been offered a college OC job. if he wants to stay pro it sounds like he is only a year or two away from the opportunity. definitely deserving of a raise/promotion.
Gruden is 46. Is that young? I personally hate the idea of Gruden coaching here. I think he is supremely overrated. He took a very good Bucs team to the Super Bowl and then proceeded to run it into the ground. He also doesn’t run the Tampa 2, he kept Monte Kiffin from the Dungy era and he kept the T2 going until he left to join his son Lane’s staff in Tenneessee (Volunteers). The entire aura of Gruden rubs me the wrong way. I can understand why people might like him because he is anti-Jauron but he brings nothign to the table IMO.

My biggest concern with Gruden is the QB carousel he’s employed for much of his coaching career.

one does not exclude the other. When you take a step back and look at Johnson’s body of work since he started coaching, it is pretty impressive. And I certainly do not want to take anything away from Payton because he is the one that orchestrated it all so he deserves most of the credit and I am not implying otherwise.
Johnson has worked for Payton since 2006 and has produced awesome results with very little to work with. He definitely has worked long enough in this explosive aerial attack system to have learned a thing or two. Offensive coordinators are grooms from position coaching positions and it seems to me that Johnson might be a very good candidate. OC’s don’t usually do lateral movements, they get promoted instead. So the only way to find a good OC is to look in the grass.
And I for one, much prefer a head coach with experience over a rookie that might or might not turn out to be good. Especially after our recent past (Williams/Mularkey), so my preference would be a youthful, experienced HC and Gruden fits the bill.

You know if Jauron was canned in-season, the coach(s) you might want wouldn’t be available, right? They all have network contracts.
Jauron deserves the season to prove he’s more than poorly-timed punts and game-day gaffes.

i’d give Jauron 10-12 games, if the Bills are below .500 then show him the door and install April as HC on a temp basis to finish the season. Depending on how OBD feels at the end of the season, either retain April as HC or keep him as STC and go find a real HC. Don’t forget that Ralph has shown nothing to indicate he’s willing to spend big $ on a HC or relinquish personnel decision making authority to anyone but himself.
most of my posts get deleted :(
Bobby April’s struggling mightily with special teams this season. I think asking him to take over head coaching duties would be a recipe for disappointment for the fanbase.

Can't do that
Once April takes the Interim, he’ll never go back to simply being the ST coach. Name me one time you’ve ever seen it happen elsewhere?
That being said, I certainly do not want to loose April as our ST coach.
Also, I am fed-up of loosing and I want a real coach in here. There is so many very good options out there, why should we settle for anything less? The fans have made significant contributions in the past few years selling out the games and increasing the season ticket base – so we’ve done our part, now it’s Ralph’s turn to step up to the plate.

Yep, that’s what I just said below and now I see you said it too, keysh. April wouldn’t be going back to ST coach once he’s an interim HC. There’s no reason to make that move.

It happened in Buffalo when defensive backs coach Harvey Johnson stepped in for Joe Collier in 1968. He coached the team for all but one game that year then went back to being DBs coach the next year under a new regime led by John Rauch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Johnson_(coach)

You might as well keep Jauron if he makes it to Thanksgiving. What good is it going to be to can him then?
If you promote April, you pretty much end his reign as ST coach. How often do guys get the in-season promotion and end up back in their old coaching role with the team?

It’s important to get the next HC in as soon as possible in order to give him a free year. The more games you give him the better he can assess what he has and prepare for the draft & next season.

Sure, that'd be great
but you aren’t getting a HC for the future in the middle of the season, unless he’s already a coach for your team. We don’t have that guy. April isn’t someone I even consider a possibility.
The biggest thing is to get a jump on it, immediately after the season. If it’s to be done, can Jauron ASAFP after the Colts game. We don’t need a meeting of the minds, inner circle of ineptitude, week-long seance to decide on this thing. It needs to be done swiftly and absolutely.
The biggest problem is we need a GM, and that will take time. Who knows if Ralphie will bother considering that option again….Let’s say he does go after a GM, that’ll take some time, and once that guy is hired, it’ll take a little longer to get his coach in.
Don’t forget the interviewing policies for coordinators still coaching in the playoffs either.

Jauron deserves nothing!
He’s had 3 full years, isn’t that enough? The first season was a learning curve but what about year 2 and then last year? Sorry but my patience has run out. The same stupid mistakes are his signature and will always be because of his “ULTRA” conservative approach to everything. I heard someone say on WGR550 the other day that Jauron coaches to keep it close and you know, I’m starting to think that that’s true.
He is a very classic person, faithful & loyal to a fault. He seems like a very hard worker but then again most head coaches do also. His lack of knowledge on the offensive side of the ball has been hurting us since he’s been here. IMO he is a great defensive coach but he lacks the game-day savvy to execute on a consistent basis. He needs to go.
Your ability to control the LOS is directly linked to your ability to win football games!

I don’t think his offensive prowess is precisely the problem. Obviously, he’s come from the defensive side, so that’s where his focus lies. He was also a RB at Yale so he’s not unfamiliar with offense. (Surprisingly, also drafted as a shortstop by the St. Louis Cardinals, though that’s not really relevant.) It’s been said before that the no-huddle was his idea and I like the reasoning behind going to it, even if the results haven’t necessarily been mind blowing so far.
I think he’s had a major problem with his assistants. He’s the head coach. He can’t control every facet of every gameplan. So far, neither Fairchild or Schonert have worked out and that’s been the main issue with the offense from my perspective.
Official ledge-talker-offer of the Buffalo Bills.
So what you are saying is that he is completely incompetent when it comes to hiring the appropriate staff to get it done. That’s part of the job too and that’s exactly what my issue is with him. I have no problem with a defensive guy that is competent enough to evaluate the proper OC and go out and hire him. Unfortunately for us, Jauron has proven that he is inept at finding a decent offensive mind to handle that side of the business.
Your ability to control the LOS is directly linked to your ability to win football games!

Yeah. I’m saying Jauron has flaws. It’s not an all-or-nothing thing. Every coach in this league has flaws. Lots of good coaches have weak points. I’m saying that I’m willing to wait a little while longer to see if Jauron can pull it together for a good season and possibly get us over the hump. You remember where we were at with the Donahoe-Mularkey experiment? We’re better off now. No question. I won’t wait forever, but I will wait a little longer.

What do you gain competitively by canning a HC mid-season? When has it ever worked favorably? Asking for his head during the season is akin to saying “the sky is falling.”

Some will say Singletary last year
What’s his face in the suit got canned, Singletary came in, instilled some discipline and his imprint on the team. The 49ers, despite still being relatively undertalented, are playing tougher, quality football now. I’d say, to this point, it’s working out for them. But who knows if he’ll stand the test of time there.

It’s worth pointing out that he was hired from within that season. 2008 was his 4th year in the SF organization, so he knew the schemes and players. If Buffalo has enough confidence in promoting Bobby April midseason, then it’s an option (although it isn’t one I would be happy about), but hiring somebody like Gruden to come in midseason could be pretty disastrous.

it is a head start to next year, give the new guy a chance to assess what he has and what he needs for next year.
Plus, IMO if the move is done early enough with the right guy, we might have a chance to actually finish the year with a few wins. Clearly Jauron is not going to last the year, he should have been fired last year but that is water under the bridge now… so what do we gain by holding off?

Good pull on Johnson. That’s quite the succesful career.
My only concern would be to hand over the play calling to a guy who’s coached the same position on offense for over 20 years and has never called plays before or had that much responsibility. What do we know about his ability to gameplan? How much does he know about running the football or the QB position?
Is pairing him with Gruden the best idea? What does he know about Gruden’s offensive philosophy and could he gameplan and call plays to Gruden’s liking? There’s a reason that head coaches almost always hire guys they are familiar with to coordinate the side of the ball that they know best.

meanwhile Jauron and Van Pelt are still HC and OC. Why can’t we see what comes of this team and this season, if not for even just a bit longer?
I will only say it once more: canning Jauron during the season = punting on 4th and 1 with 7 minutes to go.
