Letter to the Rumblings Community

Bros,

It would appear that I have hit rock bottom as a Bills fan. Through all the heartbreak and disappointment over my two decades of consciously watching (I don’t remember anything pre-4 to 5 years old), 2009 in 5 weeks has emerged as the worst season I have ever experienced. What about wide right? The Music City Miracle? Losing to third stringers to miss the playoffs? Those were all heartbreaking moments but to me they have nothing on this season and let me explain why.

Star-divide

Dick Jauron and the front office have learned a valuable lesson in football basics and that is that you do not win without a capable offensive line. They gambled on assembling the most talented team the Bills have fielded in well over 5 years but by going cheap on the offensive line. Over the last three years the Bills were in the playoff hunt until at least the last quarter of the season with vastly - vastly - inferior teams but it goes to show you that you win in the trenches. While cutting G Derrick Dockery, T Langston Walker and trading T Jason Peters saved the Bills millions in cap room it basically trashed the season and they are likely to pay for their miscalculation either this week or next as Ralph Wilson will undoubtedly clean house after watching his team lose 6-3 to a winless Browns team despite holding the opposing quarterback to two completions for 23 yards and an interception. For the fifth straight week the offense could not move down the field due to an uncanny amount of holding, false start, illegal formation, or whatever other myriad of penalties we have accumulated this season. The Bills offense committed 13 penalties with nine coming from only offensive lineman as I believe LT Demetrius Bell remains the league leader in penalties despite being injured for significant time. However, that is only a small part of why this is my worst season as a Bills fan, ever.

Never in my life of watching football - at the college or pro level - have I witnessed such a ferocious stream of injuries to the point that I do not even recognize the team that is being fielded. I am not sure if God is punishing Dick Jauron for something he did in his past but in the season in which he needed a playoff birth he has been decimated by disaster after disaster, week in and week out, of injuries. Please humor me for a moment and tell me this injury/time missed or not playing at 100% list does not make your jaw drop in disbelief: Starting MLB Paul Posluszny, 2nd string MLB John DiGiorgio, 3rd string MLB Marcus Buggs, starting OLB AND 4th string MLB Kawika Mitchell, starting FS Donte Whitner, starting SS Bryan Scott, 2nd string FS Jairus Byrd, starting CB and 2008 Kick Return leader Leodis McKelvin, starting RT Brad Butler, starting TE Derek Schouman, 2nd string TE Shawn Nelson, starting LT Demetrius Bell, rotational DT John McCargo, starting CB Terrence McGee, rotational DE Chris Ellis, starting RB Marshawn Lynch, 4th string CB Ellis Lankster, 4th WR James Hardy, 5th WR Steve Johnson.

But back to my main point: Those heartbreakers I mentioned earlier happened during seasons in which we were good –  very good – and so I was proud of Buffalo or to a team that had been assembled by bit pieces (as in the Steelers loss). This is what has been the most painful for me, watching a young, promising team get torn up piece by piece each and every week. After ten years of endless defeat this season has been my worst because personally, I enjoyed watching this team get built and maybe foolishly, maybe not believed it was destined to be together for a while and accomplish great things on the football field. I love the players on this team, I loved watching the young talent we were infusing through the draft like Poz and Lynch and McKelvin and I loved the free agent talent like Kawika and Stroud and TO we were bringing in. It just feels like this unit had unfinished business and that is why, after ten years of stagnation, it really bothered me to watch this season unfold into such a disaster so early. Perhaps the players aren't as good as I think or maybe its that the team didn't have the right coach but I choose to believe this squad was built well and that it had an air of being something you could get behind for a good, long while. I guess what I'm saying in the end is that it pains me to see this group of guys fail as they have and do so in such an injury stricken way.

The good news is that knowing I've hit rock bottom I probably will never endure a season this bad for the rest of my life or that if I do, its because we somehow turn this season around as it is still early. The bad news is knowing how the Bills like to toy with the fans they might make a push just to fall one game shy of the playoffs. The best news is that head coach Dick Jauron is going to be fired during what many are calling the "golden offseason" for coaching hires. Returning to coaching for 2010 are likely to be legendary coaches and Super Bowl champions Mike Holmgren, Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden and Brian Billick. Some are saying Gruden is pining for the Bills job but so far its just a rumor. Either way I am hopeful all of these coaches will view Buffalo as a desirable place to coach because of the fact that they are all returning with 2 concerns. One, they are addicted and passionate about football and are coming back to have as much control over a team as possible which we can provide because we are cleaning house. Two, they are all fearful of tarnishing their legacies by returning to coach horrible teams that they cannot win with. This is tough to avoid as all teams looking for new coaches tend to be terrible or they would not be looking in the first place. Here is where Buffalo comes in, it is an incredibly talented roster and very very young - built to win for a while with the right architect. The offense has TO, Lee Evans, Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch complimented with young WR and TE corp depth and a promising QB you can either dump for a high first round pick or try to develop. The defense has Paul Posluszny, Kyle Williams, Marcus Stroud, Leodis McKelvin, Kawika Mitchell, Donte Whitner Aaron Schobel, Aaron Maybin and Terrence McGee. All of these coaches know that if they can build an offensive line and develop or find a good QB, they can win in Buffalo.

So that’s that and I thank whichever one of you actually read this long post through. After initial anger at the horrendous Browns loss and a done season I have landed in a peaceful calm, it's in fact relieving to know when you've hit rock bottom, it gets it out of the way and the team can clean up the trash and move on. I've never been one to call a season over or to call for a coaching change prematurely but in this case I think it is inevtiable that Jauron is finished. You simply can not keep a head coaching job if you score 3 points on the Browns and lose when the other QB has 23 yards and a pick. I also will continue to cheer for the Bills to win every game, I'd rather root for a horrible Bills team than not have them at all and hey, you really never know if 2009 is done.

Whatever the case, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Shanahan.

None of the above, Schottenheimer above those guys.

Schottenheimer might be one of the very last coaches I’d consider. Enough with the old folks (no offense Ralph, Marv and now Marty), but I want some damned youth and energy here. I want a young GM like Thomas Dimitroff, or an energetic coach like Josh McDaniels. We need to modernize our game and our culture. Schott doesn’t achieve that.

I didn’t vote, because I don’t want any particular head coach. I want a particular GM candidate to be our GM, and I want whoever he wants as our head coach.

I’ll take Schottenheimer for his energy and his track record. Like Parcells, he’s managed to make every team he’s been with better. He took the Browns, Chiefs, and Chargers to the brink of the Super Bowl. Even the Redskins were on the upswing coming out of the one season he was there. And you can’t say that Marty doesn’t have energy. He’s coached with passion for years. More passion than a lot of the youngbloods do today.

i agree and i kind of wished id put Marty up there in the poll

your right, and I think people sell him short because hes always “only” been to the brink, a place I’d LOVE to be right now. But would he really come here to face the Jets twice a year? Isn’t Brian Schott his son?

If I am choosing off that list I pick Holmgren for one reason – he took ovre the Seahawks and took them to the Super Bowl. He has done it before.

great football mind and knows quarterbacks. I’m suprised so many people are voting Cowher. I’d think the taste of the day would be for offensive minds.

Just don't let him be the GM, his best seasons coaching the Seahawks came after he was stripped of those duties

He is a solid coach, but he needs a very solid GM to help him be a real success. I would be fine with The Walrus and Eric DeCosta if DeCosta liked him

Voted Holmgren too

I think he can develop TE. I heard he’d make Favre throw “5,000 times” a practice.

by Ono on Oct 12, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw some Seahawks practices under Holmgren.

And he would have Hasselbeck hitting people in stride on short passes over and over and over on each route, critiquing each throw, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he made Favre throw a ton each practice

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

Love Gruden. My only knock against him is his WCO. I hate the WCO. I want Buffalo to be a power running team. Nasty. Not some dink and dunk offense. That said, I love Gruden!

Nice read Poz

Slight change to suit my needs…

After initial anger at the horrendous Browns Saints loss and a done season I have landed in a peaceful calm, it’s in fact relieving to know when you’ve hit rock bottom, it gets it out of the way and the team can clean up the trash and move on. I’ve never been one to call a season over or to call for a coaching change prematurely but in this case I think it is inevitable that Jauron is finished.

…not a bad place to be actually, given the current state of our team. Although we hadn’t quite hit rock bottom at that point, I truly had the feeling that the rest of season was going to be a wash.

Didn’t vote for any of the coaches mentioned in your poll. I agree with Brian (not necessarily on the youth movement — although I don’t necessarily disagree either) more so along the lines that we need some fresh blood…a “fresh of breath air” if you will. Maybe a promising candidate from the college ranks or the "hot shot, hungry " coordinator lurking out there (no, I don’t have names right now, I’ll leave that to the more football astute on the board).

You simply can not keep a head coaching job if you score 3 points on the Browns and lose when the other QB has 23 yards and a pick.

Also, DJ needs to go now. He does nothing but further harm this team from this point on. DJ = regression.

I also will continue to cheer for the Bills to win every game, I’d rather root for a horrible Bills team than not have them at all and hey, you really never know if 2009 is done

But of course…We’re Bills fans after all ; )

with more IR players im starting to get worried that some guys wont recover for next season and the new coach will get rid of them and we will be in rebuilding mode …again!

a coordinator might not be a bad idea, althought at this stage of the game – ten years no playoffs – i think we can no longer afford to gamble on the unproven and Ralph must go for a known commodity.

What gave us away during the Saints game MonStarr? The complete ineptitude of the offense or the coaching decisions that pushed you over the edge?

GOOD! It’d be nice to actually rebuild here instead of bringing in spare parts over and over. If we had properly rebuilt 4 years ago instead of halfheartedly “rebuilding”, we might not be in this situation. And who cares if we get rid of most of these players? Many of them stink and are overhyped by Bills fans anyways. The talent on this roster is terrible and needs a major improvement.

i totally disagree. With exception to the offensive line, and acknowledging that some people don’t buy into Trent Edwards so I’ll count that, I really like our talent. I love our receivers. Stevie and Hardy are the future and lee evans is the best deep threat in the league. TO is pretty good too, by the way. Shawn Nelson has a bright future too.

Then we have Poz playing behind Stroud and Kyle Williams which is excellent interior play. Schobel is looking good again and as he declines Maybin will ascend hopefully. Kawika is a leader by example and a good attitude guy to have around and Donte , McGee and Leodis make a good secondary with Bryan Scott doing a stable job. Whats so terrible about it? We need an attitude and strategy adjustment more than talent in my opinion.

Not sure how to respond to this. On one hand, I firmly believe every team deals with injuries, and we shouldn’t use this as an excuse, on the other hand our rash of injuries seems a bit alarming. In my mind it simply exposes the lack of us having quality depth — the blame lies solely on the front office. But at the same time I can’t ignore the fact that I highly doubt that any team could prevail if they sustained the same number of injuries to so many starters for so long. I really have no answer to this. I don’t want to blame it on Bud or the perceived “soft” training camps…more so on just bad luck?

a coordinator might not be a bad idea, althought at this stage of the game – ten years no playoffs – i think we can no longer afford to gamble on the unproven and Ralph must go for a known commodity.

I just honestly feel that all the names that are being tossed around are out of a job for a reason. While I do feel that any thes of guys could eventually get us to the post-season, but the goal every year in my mind is to win the Super Bowl… I’m not sure these guys will get us over the proverbial hump (not like an unproven could either). I just want fresh blood that’s all.

GOOD! It’d be nice to actually rebuild here instead of bringing in spare parts over and over. K is right. We’ve been slapping a band-aid on wounds that really required a tourniquet. I do disagree with him on fact we need a major infusion of talent…how about “significant upgrades at numerous positions?” lol

What gave us away during the Saints game MonStarr? The complete ineptitude of the offense or the coaching decisions that pushed you over the edge?

Both. And when the screens to Freddy weren’t quite as effective. That seemed to be our mainly effective play on offense. When I realized that the Saints realized that they could run the ball damn near at will on us. When I watch the post game pressers and hear the players (even TO!) emulating DJ. Their play on field is a direct reflection of him….we play flat and not to lose, keep it close, but never to win. But the straw was…well just read my sig….DJ basically told his team that he didn’t have enough faith in them with his decision…and finally lost them and this season…I stayed up until 2 a.m. (Baghdad time) to watch that damn game. After he decided to punt, I turned the t.v. off, & went to bed with that feeling that described in your letter.

At that point point I just knew that we were going to get crushed by Miami (watched the Colts/Phins game) and had a real good inclining that The Browns might beat us…and well here we are.

I’ve never done that before. In 20+ years of watching Bills football, no matter where in the world I was, I always watched the entire game if I could. Not anymore…at least not until real change happens.

I appreciate the time, effort, and passion you put into that post……….

but Im with Brian we need some youth….and fire on this team.

Those guys arent the answer.

Jon Gruden is not the fire your looking for eh?

To be honest, I really think Shanahan can be the answer. Maybe he lacks the youth and fire you speak of but he plays crazy offensive mind games and has been incredible at churning out monster 1,000 yard rushers with guys like Otis and Mike Anderson because he builds strong offensive lines and creates gaps thereby opening the passing game allowing success there as well. Just imagine what he could do with Marshawn and Fred!

Jon Gruden has had his time.......

I think we need a new direction completely…….

Im obviously biased but I would love to have Jim Harbaugh coach this team……but I think Brian is on to something here with the GM thing…..We need a “football guy” who brings in the players and coaches he want……..and Ralph needs to be less AL Davis and more Arthur Blank.

good write up Poz

Agreed with a lot of what you said. Very well written. Rec’d.

My head coaching wish list:

1. Schottenheimer (He would bring tough, grit and determination to Buffalo. Runs a 3-4 defense and Marty Ball. Love me some Marty Ball with Lynch and Jackson)

2. Cowher (Simply a blue collar consistent coach who knows talent. Very similar to Shotty in the style of coaching)

3. Shanahan (A winner. Knows how to build a dominate running game. Has front office experience)

4. Gruden (Love the fire and intensity. Love the attitude. The only thing that keeps him low on my list is his love for the west coast offense. I hate the WCO and really have no desire to see that crap here in Buffalo. Besides that though, Gruden would be a great choice).

5. Holmgren (See Gruden. Gruden gets the nod above him because of his youth and fire. I would question Holmgren’s desire to see through the entire process of re-building a Super Bowl contender).

6. Billick (Decent all around. Suppose to be an offensive guy, but was never able to get the offense going in B-more. What happens when he coaches a team that doesn’t have Ray Lew and Co. on defense?)

John I.

I fully agree with your top 4 except that I would move Gruden up to 3. I am not a huge Shannahan fan but he does know how to run the ball and like you JR, I’d love to see some hard-nosed smash-mouth football with Lynch leading the way!

Cowher is staying in North Carolina!!!!!!!!

I live in Raleigh and Bill Cowher has no intention of leaving here, mainly because he went to NC-State and his daughters live nearby. The only coaching job he might consider would be the Carolina Panthers. Why do you think he would leave a great organziation like the Steelers?
i think the only coach the Bills have a shot at might be Holmgren, none of the coaches mentioned would ever come to Buffalo. Face Reality!

I voted Cowher above, but doubt he’d come (due to his fam in NC), so my real vote I guess is for Chucky! And he has stated on MNF how much he likes the Bills young team, so I have to think he would come.

Agree with getting a G.M. first

I didn’t vote, because I don’t want any particular head coach. I want a particular GM candidate to be our GM, and I want whoever he wants as our head coach. – Good point!
Jimmy Johnson didn’t succeed with Miami, just as Parcells didn’t do as well with the Jets. If Cowher is so great, then why did they win a Super Bowl with Tomlin. It’s because they draft well!!!!!!!!!!

by BuffaloWhiner on Oct 12, 2009 2:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I chose Gruden because he’s a Univ of Dayton Man. Gotta support my alma mater.

Brian makes a good point, the GM should be able to have a say in who the coach is. But isn’t knowledge of the incoming coach’s system a critical part of having a ‘vision’? So the logical solution is ‘bring in a GM and have that GM decide on the HC’. Will Ralph allow that? Synergy is obviously important, but I wonder if it is a ‘chicken or the egg’ question as to who you bring in first.

BTW – I’d like to cast my vote for Ron Wolf as GM. He did a pretty bang-up job in GB and hasn’t been doing much but consulting for a few years.
