Bills lose linebackers Mitchell, Buggs for season
Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron told assembled media early Monday afternoon that linebackers Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs will miss the remainder of the 2009 season. Both players injured knees in Sunday's 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns and were carted off the field.
For the time being, the loss of Mitchell leaves Keith Ellison as Buffalo's most experienced starter at linebacker. Until Paul Posluszny returns, Ellison will likely assume middle linebacker duties, just as he did when Mitchell departed yesterday.
There is, however, good news on Posluszny. Jauron mentioned that Posluszny is now "week-to-week," a designation held by safeties Donte Whitner and Bryan Scott. Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com mentioned on the team's official pre-game show yesterday that Posluszny had been cleared for everything but practice (and contact drills), but was lifting weights as he normally does. The news could indicate that Posluszny is closer to being cleared for practice.
One other injury note: OT Jonathan Scott, who injured an ankle yesterday, is day-to-day. He should not miss significant time.

Expect to sign a couple new players off someone’s practice squad. Alvin Bowen might have a shot of being re-signed.

This is the problem- can we stop freaking signing practice players? If we actually want to do something, sign Derrick freakin Brooks or trade away worthless players like parrish for someone that can actually play.

There’s a reason NO ONE signed him. The guy is washed up. Might was well keep signing younger guys to see if they show anything.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. The reason no one wants to sign him is because he wants a guaranteed starter position and a little extra $$. Well considering we no longer have any real starters at LB, and that we’re playing people left and right off the PS, we have both the $$ and the spot to offer him.

What is the point of signing Brooks now? This team is going nowhere, I doubt he would even want to come here at this point, what would he have to gain? He would be better off sitting and seeing if another contender will give him a call later. Seems like a better idea then jumping on this train wreck.

Linebacker Depth
I don’t think there are too many teams that are decent 5 deep at LB.
Poz, Digiorgio, Buggs, Mitchell

i understand that you have to write posts about this season but....
i’m already looking to next year. i’ve got a 4 step program for buffalo right now. 1 trade owens, he’s been a good soilder, you know he’s pissed but he’s kept his mouth shut, might as well let him go to a contender, he’s not going to be here next year anyways, might as well get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him, 2 play evens, mcgee, stroud and shobel sparingly, there’s no point getting them hurt this season if we’re looking twards next season (i’m not saying sit them for the rest of the year, but cut down there reps, get ellis, maybin, johnson, lankster, corner, harris, johnson, hardy, and byrd some experience. 3 NEW COACHING STAFF/GM AT END OF SEASON both positions can be filled by shanahan. 4 Draft Clausen/Bradford (sorry trent, your not bad, but your not good) an O-lineman, a line backer and DT in the 1st and 2nd rounds and again in the late rounds. DB’s are actually pretty good. we need run support and offense. we need players to step right in(hence drafting them in the 1st 2 rounds) and depth (hence drafting the same positions in the 5-7th rounds excluding QB) We’ve waited 9 years for the playoffs, what one more year? and i’m sick of this “our goal is to make the playoffs” BS at the begining of the season, our goal should be to start winning championships, we can start with an afc east and move from there. If our goal isn’t championships we might as well fill out an aplicaion to join the cfl

Because teams like the Bears & Ravens know they could use a #1 WR to give them the edge over their division opponents

ESPN Rumor

by PFD on Oct 12, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Bills might want to consider what the market would offer for Terrell Owens.
It makes a lot of sense for the Bills to dangle T.O., he notes. Owens is in the last year of a one-year, $6.5 million contract. If Buffalo were to trade Owens, they could get back a mid-round draft pick for a player who will be free to walk away from the organization after this season in a year when the Bills are no longer viewed as a playoff contender.
What’s more, the Bills would save about two-thirds of his salary — over $4 million, a nice tidy sum for a franchise that has looked for alternative ways to generate revenue (and he’s already helped them sell-out for the rest of the year). Schefter believes it would take a playoff-caliber team that needed a wide receiver to help make this trade work. But a team such as Chicago, which could use a play-making wide receiver to help unseat the first-place Minnesota Vikings, might find it worthwhile to part with a mid-round pick for an offensive playmaker that can help make a difference this season.

Some insight on what that would get us
My rankings have changed from the beginning of the college season, and I took a look at what an Owens trade could get us. This assume the Bears pick about 22nd and my rankings are in the ballpark.
4th Round BPA:
-Jamar Cheney, LB, Mississippi State
-Lindsey Witten, DE, UConn
-Ed Dickson, TE, Oregon
-Pat Angerer, LB, Iowa
-Taylor Price, WR, Ohio
5th Round PBA
-Nate Bynam, TE, Pitt
-Darian Stewart, SS, South Carolina
-Tim Hiller, QB, Western Michigan
-Roger Safford, OT, Indiana

he was only on the FA market for 1 day or 2
Because he has keep his mouth shut, and contenders who need a #1 reviever who they don’t have to resign at the end of this year with emense talent for a 2nd round pick is a steal. Look at what the jets gave up for edwards, and owens hasn’t recently punched out lebron james freind (allegedly). Plus owens knows how much money he can make in an uncapped year if he produces and keeps his nose clean, he’d do it in buffalo if our offense had a pulse. like i sad 2nd rounders a deal for some team

I hope they don’t bring Poz back until he’s 110% healthy. There’s no need to put him back out there at this point.
We should be looking for two new starting LB’s next year. Mitchell will probably be even slower coming off this injury. More holes to fill, as always….

Because we drafted him? I like how Corto was the guy who came in yesterday, not Harris. Says a lot about Harris, doesn’t it?
A lot of Bills fans were saying this about Bowen last year. Why should we believe Harris will be much different and why should we have any expectations or rely on late round picks so much?

^ agreed … just pointing out that it’s more than the coaches that are to blame.
we don’t have the players at key positions (LB, QB, OL mostly) and we’re suffering for it now.
we go out and get waiver wire and practice squad guys instead of veterans who not only can help but can be good in the locker room. The Pats and other teams take cast offs year after year and maintain a winning locker room, so why can’t we?
it’s a combination of being cheap and being fearful of rocking the boat and the same old same old mentality. It’s lame and tiresome and needs to be eliminated.
But of course, the last time we went down this path we got Gregg Williams instead of Fox or Lewis.
We took Dick Jauron over Mike Sherman (who is probably a better pro than college coach).
So, I have no faith that even the front office can find anyone, coaching, GM, scouting, or otherwise.
Bummer. :*(

williams was far and away
the dumbest move this franchise made.
That and not draft ngota.
but hey, 6’4’ 320 lb. pro bowl run stuffing tackles can be found in smaller packages like Larry Tripplet and are really a waste of cap space anyway …

not the worst move
drafting mckelvin instead of claddy, lynch instead of revis, whitner instead of cutler, mccargo instead of mangold, losman instead of steve jackson, mcgahee insead of dallas clark…..you get the picture, our talent scouts are terrible

Not the scouts
It’s the decision makers. The scouts will potentially pull for a guy they scouted, but they are mostly fact-oriented. The front office folks pull the trigger. They same scouts unearth really talented folks in the later rounds. They scouts are doing their job. Just need a GM now to do his.

WAIT A SECOND!
All is not lost…
NFL.com is reporting that the Bills lost Mitchell and Boggs
Maybe Buggs is fine. Now the Bills need to find a replacement for their HOF 3rd Baseman.

I just spit my drink across the room (I’m not kidding, I really did). Great line.

so does Freeman get the call? I know he had a lot of upside pre-draft.

no, these guys i listed didn’t have the best upside, there were the best player available when buffalo drafted (or in mccargo’s/losmans case, traded up for) the players we drafted were supose to be the ones with upside, how’d that turn out?

We have a hard time developing talent
because we are consistantly putting them into positions where they do not have time to develope. Not only that but the guys we draft are put into a team that has forgot how to win and honestly act like they don’t care.

yesterday
had a very “I dont care” attitude to it. It started on the field and it crept its way up into the stands. Honestly fans just dont care anymore. Its too hard believing in something that YOU KNOW we’ll F up. There is no excuse to lose a game like that… but its not just yesterday this team takes on its personalities of their coaches and owner. NO EMOTION!!! what a shame… such high hopes when you look at this team on paper there should be no reason we cant compete…

Has anyone here questioned whether it might be that field turf?
Having experienced it myself, it seems like it lends itself to tons of CL-band injuries.

My money would be on the facts that (a) Buffalo fields small defenders and (b) said small defenders are left on the field for a ridiculous number of snaps each week by a dysfunctional offense.

Agreed, Field Turf is no where the knee wrecking hamstring destroying surface that astro-truf was, and I have played on both
Mitchell and Buggs would have gotten hurt on grass regardless, they style of the injury would happen regardless of the surface
As my mother once said, common sense isn't as common as it should be, I'm looking at you Fewell, common sense says to play UP on the line against the slant.

For the record, I was half-joking
Although the IR list for the team has been pretty long since it was installed.

you may have been joking – but there’s a lot to it. There have been many studies done and concluded about the increased risk of leg injuries with field turf and astro turf – most baseball players have completely stopped training on any kind of turf in the offseason and instead train exclusively on grass.
all that being said, the game was meant to be played on grass anyways =)
