Team in shambles!!!

It has been a long time since I have posted anything or commented on anything.  So, I have been sitting back and attempting to enjoy some football this year and I have been watching this Buffalo Bills squad just keep getting embarrassed.  We all have our own feelings but I think we can all share the same sentiment as I do that it is just sickening to watch.

Here is my issue.  We have a very young offensive line.  We all know that.  We are struggling to keep the ball for more than 3 downs per possession.  We all know that.  Well, with the most recent rumor (hopefully very true) that they are going back to a conventional offense.  Call me crazy, but, why have we not signed a couple of free agent veterans by the names of Walker and Runyan?  Why not spend a little money and help this pathetic offensive line that we are currently putting on display in the NFL?  Currently it doesnt even deserve to be displayed on a high school field.  Do they have the lateral quickness to stop the edge rushers?  No, not on a consistent basis.  But they do have plenty of NFL game experience and I am sure they can give Trent more than 2.5 seconds to scan the field for our prized receivers that we pay good money for.  Not only that, they are both better than average run blockers.  And at this time, better than average is a far cry from where we are at right now.  We have a possible two-headed monster with Lynch and Jackson, and they are doing no good with the mess we have in front of them currently?

I am more than likely preaching to the choir.  I just say that with all our defensive injuries the only way to keep them rested is to be able to have possession of the ball for more than 10 minutes per game.

Something better change and quick or I the Bills will not have a chance at winning more than a possible 3 games total this year.

Until next time I feel like venting.  Later Bills fans!!!!

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Well scratch my Langston Walker idea. I see now where the Raiders just signed him yesterday 10/14. But, I believe my point was made.

I get tired of all of the Walker, Runyan, Jones talk. If those guys were any good they would get picked now. yes I know that Walker signed, but he signed with the Raiders, so that doesn’t really count.

Yeah, I guess I can see your point…..Well, no, not really. I guess I would like to win a few games and not throw in the towel and say…Oh, lets see what the young guys can do. At what expense? Getting a qb, rb or wr killed? Wow….I just dont get it. I threw those 2 names out there because we could use EXPERIENCE on a line in shambles. 5 games into the year and I’m ready to watch a new team and ask people with no logic to get a clue.

I am sick of it too… But those guys couldn’t have been any worse than revolving door Kirk Chambers… But at this point, I am apathetic… Save the money for next year.

Everyone is quick to say how bad our front office / inner circle is, but when someone asks why we can’t sign a veteran free agent (Runyan, D. Brooks, etc), the answer is always “if they were good, we would sign them”…

You can’t have it both ways…if the front office is as bad as we all think they are, then why hang your hat on the fact that they know what they are doing with regards to free agents.

I think the recent LB / S adds go to show you we are just looking for the cheapest option.

Frustration at it’s greatest…

by Slick Shifty on Oct 16, 2009 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions

The point is that no FO, no matter how good or bad you think they are, has signed either Runyan or Jones. It’s not like the Bills are the only team that could sign them. Yet for some odd reason these two injury prone, over the hill, past their prime players haven’t been picked up by ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If that doesn’t say something to you then there is nothing more that I can add…

If Runyan and Jones are so great why are they unemployed. Exactly Eric. I’m with Jason too, save the money for next year.

ive been saying the same thing for a while

but people just laugh at us and use the same tired line if they were any good pepole would have signed them. No team has a worse o-line siutation then us. We shouldnt be comparing oursevles to other teams needs. Sign Runyan

The no huddle is gone, please sign tackles Runyan, Jones or Walker

No team has a worse o-line situation then us.

very true

We shouldn’t be comparing ourselves to other teams needs
Absolutely true.

The only thing we should be asking ourselves is: Is Runyan better than what we have? Our new rookie guards deserve the chance to run block with guys who really know how to do it. I guess if Runyan is asking for too much then hat’s another story.

I have nothing left to say, these Bills have sucked me dry of any hope. Loosing to a team that completes 2-17 for 23y with 1 INT, that is beyond pitiful!

Yep....I am with you guys

Maybe the coaches have already given up on the season? They know they are going to get fired. Time to kick back and collect some checks.

green bay

their oline is just as beat up as ours

by weswed51 on Oct 16, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

so

are you saying that the offense would be much better with a couple veteran OT’s starting? that Trent would magically learn that it’s ok to throw the ball more than 5 yards or that he is legally allowed to step up in the pocket or slide one way or the other to give himself another second or two? maybe then van pelt will realize that continually putting his green Olineman in bad positions isn’t a good idea and that he should be playing to his green Olinemans strengths which is pounding the people in front of them.
The fact of the matter is that there are many problems with this team that is causing all of this angst among us fans. is the oline a problem, sure, are they being put in the best position to succeed, no.

Yes!

Trent would magically learn that it’s ok to throw the ball more than 5 yards …..

Probably not, but it couldn’t hurt.

van pelt will realize that continually putting his green Olineman in bad positions isn’t a good idea

I don’t know. He did have a good game plan vs the Pats. What happened?

The fact of the matter is that there are many problems with this team

Agreed. So fix as many of them as you can in the best way possible at this point in the season.

Kirk Chambers is a veteran, maybe we should continue to parade him out there and give up 3 sacks/game. show me a OT out there that would be an upgrade? please don’t say Runyan. nobody has signed the guy. what does that tell you? he had microfracture surgery on his knee and will be 36 next month.

the early season game plans last year worked as well. what happened? teams pick up on our tendencies and adjust accordingly. have the bills adjusted, I would say not to the extent that they need to.

I don’t think bringing in outsiders is the thing to do at this point. let’s see what we have in the lineman that are starting now. Bell, Levitre, Wood and now Meredith need reps. not only should they get better but OBD will have a better idea on whether or not these guys have what it takes to succed as starters in this league. 1 fix is to stop putting the OL in bad spots as I had outlined above. run the ball, we finally have some guys that can run block. look at Ron from NM analysis of the Olineman. they have rated relatively good in the run blocking department.

by gatornation on Oct 16, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Your post makes a lot of sense and I agree, but does that mean the coaches think the season is over too?

Sure Bell and Meredith might be stars in the making, but they are not going to become stars or even average this season. I am all for them getting playing time to get better for next year because I think the season is over.

nobody has signed the guy. what does that tell you?

Could mean that right now, we have the worst Tackles in the league. Could mean Runyan wants more money than anyone wants to give him. Could mean that he is done. I don’t know the answer.

teams pick up on our tendencies

Partly. The Oline and TEs got injured and Trent has regressed.

The one weakness in Ron’s analysis, IMO, is that it doesn’t rate the Oline as a unit. Does it really matter if they take turns screwing the pooch and grade out well if they can’t get it together for one play, or dare I say for a drive for points? How many times does the Oline as a unit all get a grade of Good on a play or are not what killed a drive?

Poor ball security leads to very painful outcomes

by Joe P. on Oct 16, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Ron may not rate the Oline as a unit but on occasions he has given play by play analysis. I think the line could become a good unit so at this point I’m all for them getting playing time. Trent is not helping the line out at all either. he has a real problem letting go of the ball. he goes through his progressions too quickly and then decides on the check down.
I don’t necessarily think starting a bunch of rookies on your line means the coaching staff is giving up. I don’t think we have enough good veterans to back up the starters that went down.
Joe, I don’t like the fact that it seems like this team has to start over again. the difference this time is that I think we have a decent core of players that could make the transition a bit more smooth then in the past. this teams problem has been leadership and it will continue to be w/out a football guy running the show who hires a head coach that has similar philosophies.

Pat's game
I don’t know. He did have a good game plan vs the Pats. What happened?

The only reason the Pat’s game was even close was because they had anticipated Trent throwing downfield and played to contain that, when he only threw 5 yards out there DB’s were caught way back protecting field that Trent could not throw to anyway. Teams know this now and don’t worry about the deep ball. That’s what happened

If we bring in a veteran now, these young guys will never develop. Unlike rookie QBs, trial by fire is, in my opinion, the best way to develop o-linemen, especially tackles. We’ve gone this far with the young line, might as well let them finish the damn thing and get some experience and cohesiveness working (failing?) together.

Simple Fix For The Bills

Four good drafts, a new GM and Coaching staff.

We are dangerously close to becoming the Raiders or Lions.

by Pruitt on Oct 16, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

We are already in the company of the Raiders and Lions. 10 years is enough. Each and EVERY year we hear all the CRAP about, lets let these get reps. Where has that gotten us in 10 years? Nowhere, nowhere, nowhere. PLEASE PEOPLE. Get over this thing of, lets allow these young guys to DEVELOP. Its over!!! New regime needed. I was stating a fact that even an old vet like Runyan or Walker before he signed, would have been better, IMO, than what we have now. Too many people are blinded by this development CRAP!!! Isnt 10 years of development enough???

by Hambone on Oct 16, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

It hasn't been 10 years of development

Up until this year we have always tried to patch together an O-line i.e Dockery, Walker, Fowler. All free agents to sole thge problems. I am not saying I think Bell and Merideth are the answers at OT, but I am not sure they are not either. I actually think the interior part of the o-line is the best it has been in probably 10 years. As painful as it is to watch, WE DO need to give these guys time to develop. If be the 12-14th game you do not see progress from now, then you learn that we need to address the position(s) in the offseason. If you do give them the time, and one or both show promise, look at this o-line for years to come. 5 young, strong athleitc guys building together. Look at the Giants line, one of the main reasons they are so good is because they have played together for so long. Lets be honest, this season is over. We noe need to find out what we really have, in order to put toghether a game plan to never have another year like this.

This team is not in shambles.

The Bills are still in a rebuilding process from which Donahoe messed up things. Ralph Wilson is a great businessman at heart, but he’s lousy at sports and team management. Wilson allowed Donahoe the Vice President of Operations and General Manager spot, Donahoe ran this team like it was the Pittsburgh Steelers. He got rid of players that were good for the team and drafted players that should have been questioned about thoroughly. Donahoe never had a winning season for the 5 years he ran this team. Since Wilson is running things differently, maybe things will get better for the Buffalo Bills in the future. If you don’t like the way the Bills are playing right now, there are 31 more teams to root for. The bandwagon fans can show up when Buffalo start winning games. Pittsburgh, Dallas, Oakland and maybe even San Francisco would appreciate your loyalty because their organization have Super Bowl rings. You fake fans want to reside with a winner when have not earned your stripes as a loser. That’s OK, give me the horse who finish last place who can’t win a race. This ugly duckling is going to win a championship mark my words for it. The Bills will get it together maybe not this season, but it will happen, let’s see how many bandwagoners jump out there then.

by Hurricane$$ on Oct 17, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with you that we will win a championship, its what keeps us going right? But there is no reason to question the posters fanhood. Just because he doesn’t like how the team is playing doesnt make him a fake bandwagon fan. Maybe I like Trent Edwards more than Kurupt or Joe P, that doesn’t make me a bigger fan. We’re in this together my man, lets not turn on each other now.

The only posters I ever get mad at are those who say they won’t watch the Bills games anymore. That boils my blood. You can not appreciate the wins if you aren’t there to feel the sting of the losses. As long as you keep rooting for the team and watching them through the lowest lows, you can vent all you want in my book. I’m not a venter for the most part (though I do occasionally) but he sounds like a fan to me.

Thanks Poz....

Hurricane – I will let your comments go. Being a fan of not only the game, but the Bills for over 20 years I highly doubt that I am a band wagoner. I think you might have put the cart before the horse on your judgement of me. As I stated in my post, I was VENTING. It’s allowed. I do not like how things have been done the past 10 years or so. Within those 10 years we have had very few positives. I simply stated that I would like to “attempt” to win now by signing vets. If thats not the way the Bills are going, which we all know its not, then so be it. As hard as it is to watch a game and as many times as I have said that I am done watching them, I am a true fan because for whatever reason, I still find myself in front of the television or near a radio to see or hear the game.
By the way, the team is definitely in shambles until Ralph decides to get a new regime and good one. Cowher sure does sound like a perfect fit but he would never come to Buffalo and Ralph would never pay what he wants. SIDE NOTE: – If Ralph is such a good business man, then why can’t he figure out that in order to win, you need a good staff? If you have a good staff and start winning it equals great marketability. Puts fans in seats. Gets us to the playoffs. So on and so forth. I think in his old age that he has allowed others to make his decisions and I think that is a fault of his.
No matter what, I bleed Red, White and Blue just as the rest of you do. I just speak my mind and not hide my feelings. I tell it like it is and not try to blow a ray of sunshine up someones behind when there isnt one.

Under Donahoe

the Bills had their only winning season in the last decade.

You can say the same stuff about this current terrible regime, letting players go and drafting questionable talent.

There has been more than enough time for this regime to build a team, and they’ve failed miserably. Don’t blame Donahoe for this group’s misgivings.
