The Buffalo Bills, after dangling receiver/return specialist Roscoe Parrish for weeks, are now expected not to trade Parrish to a new team before Tuesday's 4:00 p.m. ET deadline.

….and knows the Bills are likely to dump him regardless.
Bill Polian and AJ Smith are gone, so there's not the usual balance between "sane" and "others." Ralph has mentally checked out since 1994. It's a very dangerous time. The coalition for reason is extremely weak.

Roscoe parrish probably averages more yards on a punt return than our offense does on offensive drives. he is the best punt returner in the league and maybe even in NFL history. He has value

your referring to one play. Look at his return avg last year and the miami game. I bet he averaged more yards in punt return during the miami game than our offense did for the game. He is a dynamic player and I dont mind him trying to make plays to try to help our pathetic offense.

He has HURT the team this year. This is a failure on the part of the Bills. They have an asset (no matter how little value it brings) and they don’t get anything for cutting it loose. The Browns may be abismal, but they have something like 11 picks next year. THAT’S how you build a team.

He's averaging 6 yards a return this year.
Less than half his career avg. Almost half the yards he has gained this year came on that one return in the Miami game.

I agree with csc. He’s had a couple off weeks and one terrible fumble, but overall he can still help out. In fact, he’s major problem now is that he’s trying too hard to return a big one and give his team spark — an admirable goal. Once he calms down and stops dancing around, he’ll be fine and back to his record-breaking self.
The Bills are often too quick to jump the gun on apparently washed up talent, by either cutting or refusing to resign or offer a competitive bid. See, e.g., Takeo Spikes, London Fletcher, etc.

I am sorry but I think Parrish can be a dynamic player in this league. Our coaching staff just doesn’t know how to see or use talent. They can’t use talents like parrish, lynch, Owens or Evans well at all-see our offense the last however many years. They let players with good talent go because they can’t see talent- Jim Leonard, Mario Haggen, Winfield, Pat Williams etc etc. If you keep good players like Leonard, Windfield and Haggen, you wouldn’t have to spend draft picks on Bryd, Mckelvin and Harris. They all could be starters on this team, especially Haggen since this LB corps is so depleted. Parrish has HURT this team this year BUT he has kept us in and won us many games in the past. Again, I don’t mind seeing a playermaker trying to make a play, this is what this league is about. We don’t do this, we don’t throw the ball to Lee and Owens and let them make a play ever. I am not sure if its Trents fault or the coaching staffs fault, but the more I watch this dismal offense I think its the coaching staff not letting Trent give these guys a shot to make a play.

Leonhard and Haggan were garbage in Buffalo! Haggan is a 3-4 LB which is why he’s been successful in a 3-4 defense. Should we have changed our defense to accomodate him? Leonhard did nothing here when he was on the field for the Bills. He has done nothing this year on the Jets.

Leonhard is only good if he has ed reed on the other side of the field.
Theres a reason the Ravens didn’t resign him. There are zillions of Leonhards if you have the Ed Reed.
Roscoe can’t be a dynamic player in any role besides the role he already has. He’s simply too small and too weak: he can’t break tackles and so he needs wide open space: that’s just not an asset on offense.

12 drives in the Miami game including two that were only one play long (INT-TD and end of half). They got 206 offensive yards gaining 4.2 yards per play. That averages to 17.2 yards per drive.
Parrish best average was 16.3 in 2007. His career is 13.6. This year is 6.1. In no way is Roscoe better at returning punts than our offense except that he averages more per return than any team averages per play. That’s because those stats don’t include fair catches or non-returns.

Roscoe:
Career = 13.6
2009 = 6.1
I will take the worst games.
In the Browns game the Bills had 12 drives including the final one that began with 23 seconds left. They had 288 offensive yards. That is 24 yards per drive. Bills offense wins.
They had 12 drives in the Saints game, too, and garnered 243 yards, an average of 20.25 yards per drive.

No it would not. The only cap hit the Bills would take is this year and is at or less than a million dollars. Getting rid of him is not harmful with or without the cap.

Also, trading him would have the exact same cap ramifications as cutting him. You’re still on the line for any bonus money that hasn’t already acounted for.

Depending on what happens with the CBA, we should run some salary cap type stories this offseason. Just some explanations of the basics. You did a great job on that uncapped year article. We’ll have to see how things play out in the league, but it’s something to think about.
And for those looking at a simple explantion of what a cap hit is, here goes:
Every dollar that a team pays it’s players has to be accounted for in the salary cap. But every dollar that these guys get paid doesn’t necessarily count against the cap in the year that they make it. Things like performance bonuses can make things tricky. The majority of an average cap hit is signing bonus money. Since teams can’t afford to take a 20 million dollar cap hit for giving a star player a big signing bonus, they get spread out evenly over the life of a contract. If a guy signs a 5 year deal with a 10 mil signing bonus, then the bonus counts against the cap for 2 mil per season. So if a player is cut or traded and he’s received a bonus that hasn’t yet counted against the cap, it gets added on to the current season (or upcoming season if it happens in the offseason) in the form of a cap hit.

Another OBD failure to improve the team
Yes, it takes two teams to make a trade and do a deal. However, I have to blame Russ Brandon or John Guy for not being able to move a player or improve our team any when we are sorely lacking at LB and stopping the run.
The Bills have had 6 weeks to trade Roscoe this season when they new they’d be placing Hardy on the PUP list. They had rumors of trading him in the off-season and during last April’s draft and never got the deal done.
Now we are stuck with him and his contract for a guy that will be either in-active or only catching a few punts for us during games. I would imagine that the Bills will have to cut that Johnson we just signed last week at Safety in order to fit. I guess Justin Jenkins could be a casualty too.
IMO, John Guy has to go after this season!!!

No offense but if a guy is available via trade is he really going to be the savior for our defensive woes?
Hardy doesn’t have to go onto the roster for 21 days according to Chris Brown. Plus having Hardy on the roster doesn’t preclude them from having Parrish. Justin Jenkins is still on the team for cryin’ out loud.

I had a different comment before, but I hit the backspace and it went away, which was probably a good thing. In-season trades are quite rare in the NFL, and teams don’t want to integrate new guys into their systems unless they have to. Also the contract and salary cap considerations usually top anything else.

I don’t think our front office or Inner Circle or anything like that had anything to do with the inability to trade Roscoe. In-season trades are rare, the Edwards’ trade came out of nowhere, but is the exception, not the rule. I just wonder if you guys are jumping all over this so you can boo something on Jauron’s week of reprieve.
I see nothing having to do with “aptitude” in the inability to trade Parrish – if his value is almost nothing for the Bills, it certainly is less than nothing to other teams, especially considering his “tryouts” this season at receiver and even with his forte, returning kicks. Returners for the most part have a shelf life, Roscoe’s is expired.

agreed
not only lack of decisiveness, but lack of ability, lack of talent assessment, and any other attribute that creates a winning culture with quality talent.
I have to believe other teams sit back and wait for OBD to trip over their own feet or they flat out don’t want anyone we have. Either way, we are a laughing stock. We have no depth whatsoever, we are being gashed for 200-300 rushing yards every week and yet we stand pat. It boggles the mind.
Tomorrow, we’ll go dumpster diving for whomever the other teams cut to make room for their new additions.
