Do you have a Bills/NFL connection story?

I roomed with a guy in college who played kicker for Texarkana High School (Texas side).  The quarterback on my roommate's team was a guy from Arkansas named Ryan Mallett.  He ended up going to Michigan, transferring back to Arkansas, and now he's being looked at as a serious NFL prospect in a year or so.

I also went to high school (Conway, Arkansas) with a guy named Peyton Hillis.  This guy was an unstoppable halfback in Conway, it was fun to watch him destroy all the hated Little Rock schools in our division.  Peyton ended up going t the Razorbacks, who made him a fullback.  He was drafted by the Broncos, and has been enjoying somewhat of a nice NFL career.

In college (Central Arkansas) I was in the marching band, and we always formed the tunnel for the football team to march out.  One time, we started into the fight song, and the players came out all excited as usual.  #11 accidentally brushed by me coming onto the field, knocking my sax to the ground.  Stunned, I backed up and recovered it.  I watched as he couldn't stop and turn around, or he'd get trampled by his teammates, but he sorta turned around to apologize.  I looked him up after the game.  This guy's name was Jacob Ford.  I didn't think anything of it until this year, when I saw him (on the Tennessee Titans) come blowing in around the left tackle to almost sack Peyton Manning.

Now if somebody like me from a town like Conway, Arkansas has these connections, I know other Bills fans do.  Have you ever met, had any run-ins with, or otherwise have a connection with any Bills or NFL players?

Bills of the 90's

Back in 1995-1999 I talked to Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas and Jim Kelly and his family. I was only 6-11 but I went to Jim Kelly’s Hunter hope Foundation and i talked to them and it was really kool because Hunter was a Great kid he was kool i thought. Most of the Bills players was there at most of his Fund Raisers. Shocking I Talked to Dan Mario for a couple of min’s.

I don’t care how nice of a guy you think he was. He played for the dolphins, there-for deserves a shot to the groin.

I was really hoping the Bills would draft Ford a few years ago. He’s really becoming a solid NFL player…

Not so much personal experience but .

Watching Eric Dickerson play at Archibald Stadium when I was 14. Then some years later watching Dan Marino in the Carrier Dome. The thing I remember the most of those two was that you knew Dickerson was pure Gold, Marino had talent but who would of guessed a career like he had.

I met Marv Levy

I was driving through Orchard Park in October of ’07 when I saw an old man with white hair and a BILLS windbreaker on. I had my brother pull over once we realized it was him and stood along the street and carried on a conversation for about 15 minutes. He called me a true “Buffalonian” since I drive from Pittsburgh every year to watch the Bills play once a year.

it was when he was still our GM…the weekend of the Ravens game. It was Saturday afternoon and he said he was on his afternoon walk and that he lived right down the road.

A Couple Weak Connections

I used to work at a night club in 92-93 that Kelly, Thomas, Reed, Talley, and Jeff Wright used to hang out at quite a bit. They were all pretty nice, but Talley was probably the most friendly out of the bunch.

I played against Koy Detmer in high school and came within a hair of intercepting him (instead it was a touchdown).

I also had a few classes with McNabb and Rob Konrad at Syracuse.

Brett Kern, the punter for the Broncos, went to Grand Island high school. I knew him fairly well and I’m sure a handful of other people on the blog do to. It’s not a connection to the Bills, but it’s still pretty cool. I used to be impressed when he’d get the occasional game on ESPN2 while playing at Toledo, but watching him be the holder for some game winning FGs and put up some of the better punting stats in the league is ridiculous.

I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute

Was a Groomsman at a wedding in Buffalo a few years back. Before the reception at Ilio DiPaulo’s, the wedding party was prepping for their fashionable entrances when an elderly man passed us in the coat area and commented on the groom’s cowboy hat and toy tractor he was riding (yes very strange choices). I believe the phrase was “Congratulations son, and nice tractor!”

Anyway, upon a double take we realized the elderly man was indeed mMarv Levy who was there for dinner with his family.

Frank Reich

Met him after a Monday night game. My father, little brother and I talked with him for about 30 minutes. He was great. He asked us a lot of chit chat type questions. My favorite part was when he started pointing out other Bills players to us. He yelled for Nate Odoms to come over. Nate pulled his hoody up and ran.

Keepin' the faith!

I was in a picture on the front page of the Olean Times Herald (represent!) on Jim Kelly’s lap when I was five (insert creepy jokes here). They came to Olean for a function and I went to get autographs and such.

Also, my grandmother (who is old and probably a little off her rocker) insists that I am second cousins with Michigan, Falcons, Giants, Dolphins, and Jets kicker Jay Feely (my last name is Feely, which is certainly an uncommon name). Not with an “E” like A.J. Feeley, former Eagles QB.

When I played football in high school (never really played, sat the bench would be a more accurate description), we played against Clymer high school and running back Jehuu Caulcrick. Dude was a beast and absolutely dominated us. Went on to play four years at Michigan State and was on the Jets last year. Currently a free agent, according to wikipedia.

Also

this isn’t an NFL connection (yet), but I have a few classes with Greg Paulus. Seems like an okay dude, even though he’s no bigger than me physically. I haven’t talked to him one-on-one or anything but in class he doesn’t seem to be the high-and-mighty snob like he is often portrayed.

Many slight connections – not many Bills though:

- Met and chatted with Bart Starr in the Phoenix Airport back in the early 90s.
- spoke to Jim Kelly on a radio call-in show when as a teen I was living in AZ in the late 80s
- in college at UVA, met a few players here and there who eventually played in the NFL.
- I had a work-study job in the dorm Chris Slade (played LB for the Pats eventually) lived in as a freshman. I remember shaking his hand – it was enormous.
-
Also at UVA, I remember a day when I was out on the “Lawn” (what many universities call a quad) and watched QB Matt Blundin (who at some point played 3rd-string QB for the Chiefs when Montana was there) pick up a football and throw it about 70 yds so effortlessly it looked like he was pitching a penny into a fountain.

I remain convinced that somehow Drew Rosenhaus negotiated a playing time deal for Roscoe into the contract for TO.

I went to Highschool and was in the same Highschool Fraternity with Steven Jackson the St. Louis Rams running back! Pretty cool and down to earth dude! Wish I could say I played football with him but we went to a vocational Highschool and didn’t have a football team! So we had to play for our regular zoned highschool team, and our highschools never played each other!

Well...

my friends are pretty close with Mike Patterson of the Eagles….and I met him a few times. Actually, the first time I met him, I smiled and said I was a Bills fan. He then asked if the Eagles were my “NFC” team, to which I politely replied “Sorry, there’s only room for one team in my heart” and my friends asked me if I had lost my mind. I was also invited with them to Dhani Jones’s house when he played for them as the whole team was going to be there for Mike’s birthday.

Wearing my Bills jersey to the Eagles-Bills game in Philly probably wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done. But then again, that's why they call me die-hard.

In 2007 I met all of the Bills rookies at Flemming high school in Toronto ( I live there)
Poz was my favourite as I was one of the only BIlls fans there and I knew the whole draft class. I got all of their autographs. This was after trents first start against the Jets. I only could say hi to marshawn for a little because everyone knew him so he had to speak to everyone but I was the only one there with a Bills jersey on and he certainly respected that.

This year, we had on-field passes for the Browns game ( I know) and I met Joe D walking in. I also spoke to Brad Butler for awhile. On the field I spoke to George Wilson and Jonathan Stupar. I also said hi to Marcus Stroud and Reggie Corner. We got a lot of nice autographs and it was a very fun day.

No real Bills connections, at least not that I know of!

I was coached in HS by Tom Myslinski Sr. whose son Tom Jr. is the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Cleveland Browns, whom we just lost too recently, I know Tom and his brother Tim very well and they have always been some of the nicest people you will ever want to meet. Check it here

I played against former NFL WR and Michigan big time guy Marquise Walker, who was simply a freaking stud in the College and HS ranks not so much the pros as seen here

My husband grew up in Orchard Park...

so we spent part of last Christmas there with his family. We flew out really early on New Year’s Eve morning, and of course there was a huge snowstorm. We managed to get to the Buffalo airport no problem for our flight back to Seattle (via Las Vegas) and settled into the waiting area at the gate. Our plane was delayed, so the gate was getting really full. Somehow though, very few people notice when three young guys come running up the hallway out of breath. Three young guys that happen to be Trent Edwards, Marshawn Lynch, and Stevie Johnson. I was surprised that it seemed like I was one of five people in the throng that recognized them. Anyway, after they catch their breath, Marshawn and Stevie go and sit quietly at a table with their caps pulled down low and Trent wanders off, talking on the phone for the next half hour. This was the day after Dickie J was retained as coach, so I thought maybe he was talking to a journalist or something.

After Trent was done talking on the phone I did go up to him and say hi, chatted a little bit, got our picture snapped (my husband accepts the fact that I think Trent is cute and took the picture for me), and came away with the impression that he’s a pretty good dude and carries himself really well. He informed us that the three of them were all headed back to the Bay Area for the offseason, which allayed my fears that they were going to Las Vegas to party together on New Year’s Eve.

Surprisingly, meeting and getting to chat with Trent may not have been the best part of the morning. The best part came when we finally got on the plane. It dawned on me that we were flying Southwest, which does not have a first class, business class, nothing. Open seating according to the order that you check in, and the three Bills got there so late that they probably would have missed the flight if it hadn’t been delayed. Sure enough, when I got up to go to the bathroom, there was Trent, then Marshawn, then Stevie: last three rows, crammed into the middle seats. Knees hitting the seats in front of them, shoulders scrunched in, three hour flight. Three pro football players. I had to laugh. Hard to believe that they chose not to buy a first-class seat, or at least a different airline that lets you pick your seats.

Oh, and my husband went to OP High School and was on the wrestling team. He wrestled with Josh Thomas (DE for Syracuse and currently the Colts) and I think Jon Corto too. He’s seen them in the past few years in person and in photos and cannot believe how much bigger they are. Take that for what you will.

Dinner with Andre Reed, Chris Hale, Nate Odoms

The Bills used to have training camp in Fredonia, NY where I grew up. I met many of them during camp in the early 90’s as well as around town. Lots of locals worked the camp and got to know the players. Well, my cousin started dating a few players here and there during camp (Insert Joke here) and occasionally brought some of them by the house for dinner during camp. So we hosted 3 different players for dinner during different camps, Andre Reed, Chris Hale, and Nate Odoms. The coolest was Andre, it was his second year in the league, so still unknown, and I have pictures of me, my brother, and sister hanging off of Andre’s Biceps like they were a trapize. His arms were huge. But of course I got board (was 10 at the time) so I left to go skateboarding with friends, what an idiot I was, especially since he turned into a future HOF player. The other guys were alright just reall quite.

Also, talked to Marv a lot, he used to run/walk the town everyday during training camp. Such a nice guy. I also worked later at the local country club and got to meet and talk to Thruman, Jimbo, Bruce, and Talley. They all sucked at golf at the time, I can remember watching Talley on the first hole, topping his way down the fairway.

OJ

No one has an OJ story, so…

It was the year of the Bills’ last superbowl, which was in Atlanta. I had business in Atlanta just the week before the game. Arriving late at the airport I hurried along a very long corridor, walking fast in order to catch the last train. Then a man passed me walking briskly — something that never happened, since I used to walk at ~6 mph when in a hurry. So I watched the man who was large, lean and spry with a broad, square back. I saw him turn and go over to the Hertz rental desk, put both arms across the counter, and chat with the man there as if he owned the place. I stopped and saw that it was OJ Simpson, there for his superbowl TV work, getting his free car from Hertz, i suppose. I thought I should get him to sign something, that my girlfriend would like that. But i left, fearing i’d miss the train. It was just a few months later that OJ was fleeing the police in his white Bronco, while I and my wife watched on TVs in the LA airport, waiting for the next plane on our honeymoon. At that point i was glad i hadn’t sullied myself getting his autograph.

Juice

OJ used to shop at the Amherst supermarket where I worked as a kid—he was a really nice guy and would always say hello. My friend’s sister used to babysit for OJ and his first wife. Now of course, I hate to see this anti-ambassador associated with Western NY in any way, but at the time…

I grew up about 4 blocks from Roger Craig’s family. Older brother Curtis was drafted by the Bills, but didn’t stick.
Roger was an absolute beast at Davenport (Iowa) Central High. I was a sophomore receiver/safety his senior year. Bench warmer and erstwhile punt returner. He ran for over 300 yds in the state playoffs against Cedar Rapids, We lost. Jamie Williams, who also went on to a nice career with the KC Chiefs was also on that hs team.

Was also a few years ahead of Kurt Warner at the U of Northern Iowa. Don’t know him personally, but have mutual friends. Is universally thought of as a hell of a person. His wife is from my hometown, and they routinely donate large sums of money to the hs programs. every year without fail.

I finished college at the U of Iowa during the mid 80’s. I was in the endzone when #1 Iowa beat #2 Michigan in i think was 85?, 12-10. ha! college was fuzzy. Ronnie Harmon was indeed an arse.

Nothing on a personal level. One of my buddies is friends with Brian Leonhard who is from upper upper upstate NY.

At training camp I chatted with Rian Lindell, Brian Moorman, and the Dereks for a little bit. They all seemed like nice guys.

If you want to meet some players stick around after the game and go to the Big Tree Inn (in Orchard Park, not Geneseo) and guys will show up. Andre Reed hit on my sister-in-law a few weeks ago after the Browns game.
