Inactive Thoughts: Week 7
Coming off a 7 for 7 showing two weeks ago, last week was supposed to be another good week for me. Alas the Bills threw me some curveballs. Inactive was Roscoe Parrish as a healthy scratch. Active in his place was Steve Johnson. Xavier Omon also saw his first trip to the inactive list last week. He will likely stay there as a result of the flu.
Last week the Bills added to the list of walking wounded as well. Trent Edwards (concussion) and Donte Whinter (ankle) have both been ruled out. They join Bryan Scott and Jonathan Scott listed as out.
Kyle Williams (shoulder) and Shawn Nelson (concussion, flu symptoms) also did not practice this week. Chris Kelsay and Terrence McGee saw limited practice this week but both are expected to play as is Terrell Owens who was given the day off Friday. With an injury list like that you can understand why the NFL has inactive players on Sundays.
Here's my projected list this week:
Trent EdwardsShawn Nelson
Xavier Omon
Jonathan Scott
Bryan Scott
Donte Whitner
Kyle Williams
James Hardy (PUP)
Note: Every healthy player on the Bills will be active.
As Gibran Hamdan will be activated this is the first week we will see the emergency QB designation given to someone other than Hammy. It's really the only source of speculation at this point. My guess is Roscoe Parrish will get the designation. He will only be in the game as an emergency option should both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Hamdan be knocked from the game. In that event, Josh Reed would likely see the snaps at QB or the Bills could shift to a wildcat style package with Roscoe or Fred Jackson taking the snaps.

Fitzpatrick, O-Line and Spaghetti
Real quick, if Williams does play on defense, lets hope he survives without further injury to his shoulder, McCargo’s first opportunity to make a difference. Force Delhomme to beat us, if Delhomme beats us then we deserve to lose.
We need to see improvement each week from the O-Line. There has been signs last week, with less false starts, that is progress, but this needs to continue. We need these guys to sustain blocking schemes more consistently keeping drives lasting further down the field. This is a must as we enter the middle of the season.
Finally, Fitzpatrick. This guy was hired to be our #2 QB folks. Nothing more and nothing less. Any expectation other than this is wasted energy. What he does offer is a different flavor. He can make throws that Trent cannot. He will take chances that Trent will not take. When the day is done he will still be our #2 QB. Personally, I am glad he is here for that purpose. He provides a different challenge for defenses.
Spaghetti is spaghetti, it is the sause that makes the difference. As a bills player and as a fan you have to be excited that there will be a different flavor this week. The way the season finished last year and the way the season started this year, we have a different flavor for a change. Unfortunately, for Trent but fortunately for the fans we are getting a flavor change. It will make this game a little more intriguing. Ryan is good enough to pull this off, that’s why he is here. He will bring a little different flavor to this offense as long as we show some continued improvement up front. When it is all said and done this will be nothing more than just a different sause that was used for the spaghetti or a different pasta used for the sause.
I am looking forward to seeing how Ryan manages the game. Why not root for the #2 guy. I know there will be picks, I know there will be a difference on the field and that creates a little excitement for me and I believe the players will respond as well. Say all you want about Jauron and the FO, these players come to play football and play hard every game. I belive they will respond favorably.

What if Fitz throws for over 300 yards? Would you still leave him as the back-up, or would you start him against Houston? Impossible? He has done exactly that for both the Rams and the Bengals, while if my memory is correct Trent has never had a 300 yard game in his entire NFL career. Fitz will also be facing a very weak Carolina secondary (although the pass rush is strong with Peppers etc.). If it happens we will surely have a QB controversy on our hands.

Glad to receive the comment
I would love to deal with this after it happens. We have been a between the twenties offense for so long. We have been with out a 300 yard passer for so long. I am just not willing to allow myself one game or even two games to make such a prediction for QB of the future.
Trent is dealing with what defenses see on tape. His inability to improvise due to lack of confidence is hurting him bad. If he could get past that hurdle, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. After saying this I am excited that we have a qualified #2 QB to fill in. Lets say Ryan performs well for the next two weeks. He too would be facing defenses that have studied him on tape. Those questions are still unanswered. The thing that intriques me the most is his willingness to take risks down field. That is what I am expecting from him tomarrow and next Sunday at home against Houston.
If we could get two of those defenders out of the box on a regualr basis, our offense will be completely different. Still need that continuous improvement up front though.

That’s flat out not going to happen unless he shoots four short passes to Lee and TO that they take them for 75 yards apiece. I really don’t want the ball in Fitz’s hands. I’m glad he looks downfield, but he scares the crap out of me. Like a lot. We have a way of making defenses look good when we start passing, so please don’t let them get cute with the pass playcalling.

Sorry I strayed off topic here.
I do believe Roscoe should suit and be available. Unless this guy is a sideline detriment, he should be active and available, but not in his previous role, but his current one.

Steve Johnson
I’m hoping they will not only have Steve Johnson active but also use him in the passing game. Remember that Fitzgerald does not have much experience working with Evans or Owens, but was throwing to Johnson (and Reed) a lot during Training Camp. If the coaching staff is smart they will make use of that fact. Of course, who said they were smart?

I forget the emergency QB thing
If Edwards is designated the 3rd QB, can we still have someone else play if Fitz/Hamdan go down? If not, it’s likely Roscoe.
Chris Brown thinks Fred Jackson or Josh Reed would be it. He doesn’t realize that once that players plays, the other two QB’s can’t got back in. I think we could see Roscoe designated it, and then Jackson or Reed actually play there in case of the emergency. If that is allowed, of course.
I’d say:
Edwards
Whitner
Scott
Other Scott
Nelson
Ellis
Lankster

Yes. But I don’t see how Edwards wou8ld be the third QB. A concussion is a concussion. Brown said those guys would take snaps. But in that event Roscoe could enter the game with that designation to say return kicks in place of Jackson. But if the Emergency QB entered Fitz or Hamdan couldn’t come back.
So you essentially think Williams and Omon will play even though they haven’t practiced all week?

Why not have Edwards be the emergency QB? He could simply hand off, hand off, hand off, throw a none-yard pass, hand off, hand off, hand off….
Of course we could make things more challenging, Lisa, but then the stupider students would be in here complaining, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation--Seymour Skinner

I suppose you could but if he is concussed I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the field. It’s not smart for him to get near any contact with a concussion.

I thought both practiced on a limited basis Friday. If not, oh well, I’m wrong! I’m wrong enough as it is (see weekly keys article).

You are right. Omon practiced Friday and Williams was limited. I think he’s gonna give it a go but the training staff or the shoulder won’t let him.

Different player opportunity (play Maybin and McCargo)
Can somebody put John McCargo in the lineup, regardless of being a bust or not being used at all, he deserves a shot at playing. I understand Stroud, Williams and Johnson earned an opportunity to play DT. He was a first round pick, he should get some playing time along with Aaron Maybin. Sacking the quarterback does not mean you are a great DT, stopping the run and being disruptive shows greater ability. Someone will have to get hurt before this method or situation happens. Everyone saw this, when Whittner went down and Byrd stepped in. Byrd is the interception leader for the team and now Whittner wants to come back because of being out played. I still believe in this team to continue to win again. I looks like we are on the bottom and the coach is terrible, we must show preseverance in this time. It is obvious, we are not good enough to beat New England, Indianapolis, or Pittsburgh in the AFC. Buffalo must band together and find a way to win with the mediocre staff they have. Not saying it’s impossible or unreachable either. Take one game at a time, then every team in the division will take a second look at us.

McCargo will get playing time. You need rotation on the DL probably more than any other position on the defense. I wish we had more depth there with Williams’ injury.
I don’t know how the DT injury would affect the DE rotation, so I’m not sure if dropping Maybin in against a very solid LT in Jordan Gross is a good idea.
I disagree with your assessment of Whitner, too. At the beginning, our safety talent went in this order Whitner (SS/FS), Scott (SS), Wilson (FS), Wendling (ST/awful). And Byrd was an unknown quantity. So, they went with the most talented duo, Whitner at FS and Scott at SS. Scott and Whitner got injured and Byrd started making strides. Scott stayed injured and Whitner came back at SS because Byrd was looking decent at FS and Whit has the ability to do that. I think Donte’s skill set is more suited for Strong Safety, but he’s athletic and smart enough to work either. He’s not a gamebreaker like Reed or Polamalu, probably, but he’s versatile and smart, very valuable quantities.
