Ask a Houston Fan....

Hey all.  Looking forward to the game this week.  There will be an official ask the BRB Blogger thread up soon but I enjoy discussing with the opposing and thought I would offer to answer any questions you may have right now.

I think this game will be much tougher than people think.  The Bills look to moving in the right direction with Fitz and having put together 2 good wins.

Everyone is curious about Andre Johnson's status.  He is day-to-day right now and may play.  He suffered a bruised lung, so we wont know if he is a go until gametime perhaps.

However he is a warrior.  He actually snuck back onto the field after the injury in that game despite the doctor's sitting him.  After that play where he snuck back in they had to physically take his helmet and put a guard on it to keep him out, so I wouldn't discount him playing just yet.

Anyway, ask away!

Thanks TexansForever

It seems that Schaub has finally turned the corner this year. what’s different about him that has allowed the progression? is it more to do with staying healthy this year? thanks again

by gatornation on Oct 27, 2009 1:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, with Schaub it is all about staying healthy.

However, what alot of people don’t realize is that about 80% of the games he missed were due to 2 illegal hits which resulted in fines for the defensive players and significant injuries to Schaub.

He has had some bad luck, but the label of being injury prone isn’t really justified. He is more “Jared Allen Kneecapping you” prone.

Also the O-line is very good this year in pass protection. Their run blocking has not been good, but in the pass game they have given Schaub good protection for the most part. I would say most of Schaub’s sacks are because he is so scared to throw a pick that he holds onto the ball too long sometimes.

Schaub also continues to mature. He is dealing with pressure much better this year, using his checkdowns to Slaton very efficiently when he is under pressure.

His play-action game is top notch this year as well. In fact, in play-action situations this year he has a passer rating of around 115 or so, so that is something to watch for.

How has Mario Williams been progressing?

Has Brian Cushing really helped the defense as much as it seems?

by gatornation on Oct 27, 2009 1:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mario continues to be a force.

He is currently sufferinng from a shoulder injury, and it may be one of those things where he has to play through the season hurt and then have surgery after the season, I have heard that discussed.

Has it slowed him down? It doesn’t look like it on film, but those kinds of injuries are hard to evaluate so you really have to kind of assume each week is a new situation with him right now.

In short he is still dominating and disruptive but there may be an opportunity for a lineman to use his shoulder against him.

As for Cushing, I would just say that probably half of Texans fan were downright pissed when we drafted him. As of today, I doubt you could find a Texan fan that doesn’t at least support the guy if not outright love him.

Now he IS a rookie, so he makes rookie mistakes, but by and large he is playing above expectations, which were already high.

He is crazy strong. In the Jacksonville game I watched him run THROUGH the leadblocker on a running play and wrap up Jones-Drew. He is fast sideline to sideline and has suprisingly good hand in coverage. in the bengals game he made a very athletic, reaching interception on the run.

The run game is where he shines though. He has been a huge help there.

If he can keep learning the scheme (Demeco Ryans has to get him lined up in the right spot with some frequency) and cut down on rookie mistakes, he will be a dominate Linebacker in this league,

As an aside, he was the first rookie this year to get AFC Defensive player of the week last week.

Don't worry about Andre Johnson

If the Texans were playing someone other than Buffalo he’d probably wind up sitting out due to the injury. However, the Bills are well accustomed to (opposing) injured players miraculously taking the field and then having great days.

You probably shouldn’t worry about Buffalo’s pass rush either. The defensive linemen rarely get close enough to hit the QB, legally or otherwise.

Everytime I get comforatble with the ineptness of another team, they tatoo us.

The Bills are pllaying with more confidence, and that can go a long way.

In 2005 with the St. Louis Rams, Fitzpatrick threw for 310 yards and 3 TDs in a win over us.

So I am going to go ahead and assume this game is going to harder than people might be led to believe.

Byrd is playing with confidence and perhaps the rest of the patchwork secondary as well. The front seven are dealing with the reality that Buffalo is just about the worst defense against the run in the league. I don’t know that those guys have a lot of swagger.

Offensively, no one is playing with confidence except perhaps Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. I’d like to think that the interior line is growing more confident but the tackles have to be waking up at night in cold sweats. Neither Fitz nor Edwards are anywhere near confident, which has lead the WRs to question the offense.

I actually picked against Buffalo (Heretic!) this week and am anticipating a blow out loss to the Texans. It’s the sort of game that Houston can use to get healthy.

I don't know. You have some real ball hawks in your secondary.

I really believe this game may be closer than people think.

And believe me when I say that Houston can go into FAIL mode without the slightest warning.

I don’t think they will, but I have been bitten by that before.

Anway, not taking anything for granted in this one.

Schaub has cut down on his mistakes this year, leading to much more success…Do you think that continues?

Why does Chris Brown get any carries?!? He stinks!

Do I think Schaub's success continues? Yes.

Look, Schaub is the real deal. He runs about as fast as a dead man, but he is an incredible passer and read defenses very well. As long as he is healthy, he will continue to be a top qb in this league.

Becuase he is our relief back and Kubiak obviously thinks he is our best option. Trust me, we are with you on this one, noone has a high opinion of Chris Brown.

Thanks to Chris Brown we are ONE yard and a fumble away from possibly being 6-1. So ya, we aren’t too keen on Chris.

Which Texans team is going to show up on Sunday? If it’s at all possible can we have the one that played the Jets week one, or the second half of the game last Sunday?

Then again, if the Bills team that played the Browns shows up as well that would be quite the miserable game…

Ha! The TExans can be inconsistent. However they have been playing far more consistently lately than the beginning of the season.

For instance, over the first three game they were giving up a league leading 180 yards (or something near that) in rushing per game.

In the last four games they are giving up only 46 yards or so per game.

The team that played the jets isn’t around anymore, thank God, but that doesn’t mean we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot at any time.

The difference in the game last week was that the Niners pulled Shaun Hill at halftime and went from a run up the middle and short pass offense to putting 3-4 wideouts on the field and starting Alex smith at halftime.

The defense was in no way ready for that change at halftime and it showed. Bad coaching in the second half of that game.

Texans Rush D

The Texans rush D and seemingly overall D has improved the last 3 weeks (until Alex SMith went off for 200+ and 3tds in the 2nd half last week). What is the reason for the overall defensive improvement. Was it just bad offenses such as the Raiders, some luck, getting healthy, or make some personell adjustments?

And do you see the Texans looking ahead to the Colts next week? I feel like the Texans are one of those teams that have historically looked ahead.

by Berg79 on Oct 27, 2009 5:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The defense is an interesting creature.

The short version is that our run Defense is playing as well as anyone in the league right now.

However, YOU could probably put 120 and a touch on our pass D.

Our pass D is not where it needs to be and the coaching staff knows it.

The problems on Defense at the beginning of the year were related to a new scheme and some personnel issues. We now have the right personnel in and the pllayers have obviously studied their roles and are now in the assignments they were previously missing.

As for looking ahead…oh yeah, we do that. I would like to think though that this year the team is really more mature and they are starting to show it.

But it’s the Colts, and that is hard not to be thinking about.

Schaub

Schaub is great, and has found a home in Kubiak’s offense, but his arm strength has a lot to be desired. With weather predicting to be 48, 20 mph and raining on Sunday Schaub’s balls will nosedive in the swirling winds. I don’t see the passing game being that effectice, unless WR’s can turn short gains into long ones. So, that said, I think it in a way helps the Texans, as our pass defense is designed to take away the big play anyhow. Thus, if our defense doesn’t plan more man, up tight coverage, and put the pressure on Schaub to make tight throws into the swirling winds, it will be a long day of dinking and dunking. However, if our D Coordinator smartens up we will play bump and run, 8 in the box and see if Schaub can handle the winds. I see this as an ugly game, that will be 16-20 range.

I agree this will be a "dirty" game given the weather.

The Texans actually have a very good record in poor weather. Last year we beat Green Bay IN Green Bay in freezing temperatures.

In the pre-season we beat the Chiefs (Ya I know…the Chiefs) in a mudslogging rainfest.

So I have confidence in their ability to play under adverse conditions. What I am more concerned with to be honest is injuries occuring in that type of weather.

Injuries can derail as a season, as the Texans well know.

It should be a chalenging game for the texans as I get the sense that the Bills are better than their record.

we play man coverage this season quite a bit. Drayton Florence and Mcgee are two solid coverage guys and our secondary as a whole is legit. We’ll see how Schaub’s balls do in 20 mph winds, with Jairus Byrd roaming around in that secondary

David Carr

I know this seems like lightyears away for your franchise, but I have read a couple people here (myself included) reasoning with the idea of possibly bringing in David Carr to compete for the starter’s job next year.

The reasoning behind this is that Carr was stuck on some terrible, dreadful teams in Houston and never got a fair shake to succeed b/c he didn’t have any talent around him (minus a small dose of Andre Johnson’s career), and that sitting for a couple years behind Eli might have matured him and taught him a few things.

What can you speak to about Carr’s talent and what would be your thoughts on this if you were a Bills fan?

by nickfeely8 on Oct 27, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

After proofreading, I would think it should say “lightyears ago”, not “lightyears away.”

I know it’s a blog and perfect grammar isn’t necessary, but being a journalism major means I have an editor’s brain stuck in my head that I just can’t get out! Haha.

And even then, lightyears is a measure of distance, not time. I’ll stop talking now. Am I hijacking my own comment?

by nickfeely8 on Oct 27, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The idea that Carr was on bad teams has some merit, but is not the only reason for his failures.

He is gunshy, and I don’t blame him after being sacked 12983473297457 times. Nevertheless, he remains gun shy and it is an issue.

Carr certainly HAD the talent coming out of college to be a star. His work ethic in Houston though was poor. He was not the first to work last to leave kind of guy, and he got alot of flack about his effort.

Now all that sounds negative, but I just haven’t followed him since he left. Has he gotten better? Probably, it would be hard not to.

Is he worth a look for the Bills? Sure, can’t hurt to bring him in and try him out.

I also really liked those early Texans teams with Domenik Davis at RB, Carr at QB and all tohse crazy receievers you had. I always had wanted those teams to do well, i like the personnel. I think the O-line thing is way overblown

Carr just couldn’t handle pressure. He still can’t. Look at it this way: once we dropped Carr and went with Schaub, the number of sacks we took was cut basically in half – with the same O-line (minus Charles Spencer, the starter at LT). The problem was Carr, not the line.

The run game is not doing well.

Alot of people have tried to pin it on Slaton.

The reality is that he is just as fast as ever, but the Offensive Line has some injuries and has done a terrible job in run blocking.

Run blocking is easily the area on offense needing the most attention.

The result has been that we have shifted Slaton to a wider role in the passing game with very good results.

That’s a great question. If Buffalo moved to Toronto (just a couple hours away, still the closest team), I think most fans would either lose interest or stick with the team. If Buffalo moved to LA, then I don’t think many fans would convert to a NYC team. They’re a long drive from Buffalo and teams/cities like Pittsburgh and Cleveland are closer and much more similiar to Buffalo. Personally, If Buffalo goes to LA, I’m a very casual Browns fan who gets way too into his fantasy football players. If they move to Toronto, I’m still a fan, but not nearly as diehard.

I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute

I'm fine with the Oilers moving

…I just hope that the entire franchise (minus Jeff Fisher) gets consumed by a large flow of magma and disintegrates.

I think most of us at BRB will tell you that we support the Houston team, not the team that deserted Houston. There are some guys – some of whom I understand even have a full set of teeth – over at Music City Miracles that see it differently.

Ya thats a tough one.

Alot of Houstonians still support the Oilers…er Titans.

Most of us have moved over to the Texans and as they get better the fairweather fans will shift allegiance.

Ya know, it was bittersweet for us. We HATE Bud Adams. Not because he moved the teams (Technically we kicked them out of town) but because he repetitively blackmailed the city with demands until we finally voted NO on giving him more and made him leave.

So we were sad to see football leave (this is Texas, football is our National Pasttime…yes I said National) but we were happy to see Bud Adams go.

I can tell you that Bob McNair is one of, if not the, classiest owner in the NFL. We love him here because he really worked to get football back here and he is committed to getting a winning team.
